our mission
The mission of Family Services of the Merrimack Valley is
to empower, nurture, and support children and families
through life’s challenges to help them reach their full
potential.
Rooted in compassion and respect for the diverse
population we serve, Family Services helps more than 3,000
people in the Merrimack Valley each year by designing and
delivering over 15 high quality programs focused on youth
development, parent education, and emotional health. All
of these services are infused with a sense of hope and
possibility and produce sustainable change, enabling
individuals to thrive in their family, community, workplace
and school.
2014 annual report
1
dear friends,
This year, Family Services turned 160 – an accomplishment that
would not have been possible without the support and generosity of
people like you!
Since its establishment in 1854 as the Provident Association, later
called the City Mission, Family Services has never wavered from its
commitment to strengthening the community by improving the circumstances of children and families. This past year, we helped more
than 3,000 children and families who were struggling with issues
ranging from family violence to debilitating depression.
Our clients face daunting obstacles every day. At Family Services,
those obstacles begin to decrease, and progress becomes possible.
We are proud that, for every person we serve, we are able to uncover skills for the present and hope for the future.
In our fiscal year 2014, Family Services:
• Provided 5,940 hours of counseling and case management
addressing a range of issues critical to emotional health and
wellness.
• Conducted 432 group classes and activities on positive
decision making, avoiding risky behaviors, and making good
life choices.
The following report provides more highlights from the past year. All of
our work would not be possible without the support of:
• 750 donors,
• 385 volunteers,
• 48 collaborating organizations, and
• 66 staff and interns.
All of these great people and organizations played a vital role in
improving the lives of children and families throughout the Merrimack
Valley.
Throughout our 160-year history, Family Services has established a
reputation for compassion and quality that will carry us through our
next 160 years. We hope you will join us as we continue our work and
help children and families reach their full potential.
With sincere thanks for your support,
Elizabeth SweeneyKevin Reid
Executive Director
President
• Reached children and families from 86 cities and towns
