Family Services of the Merrimack Valley Annual Report 2015 History & Mission In December, 1854, a group of caring citizens from the City of Lawrence, MA, created a relief society to meet the social service needs of newly arrived mill workers. At that time, they established The Provident Association, later named the Lawrence City Mission, and known today as Family Services of the Merrimack Valley. Over its long history, Family Services has changed in many ways, but its mission has remained steadfast, to empower, nurture, and support children and families through life’s challenges to help them reach their full potential. Rooted in compassion and respect for the diverse population it serves, Family Services helps more than 4,000 people in the Merrimack Valley each year through over 20 high quality programs focused on youth development, parent education, and emotional wellness. All of these services are infused with a sense of hope and possibility and produce tangible and sustainable change, enabling individuals to thrive in their family, community, workplace and school. 2015 Programs & Services Youth Development Big Friends Little Friends: Community based mentoring. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA): Advocacy for abused and neglected children. ESTEEM: Group programming for high risk youth. PREP: Teen pregnancy prevention curriculum. Project Venture: Adventure based leadership training. SIBS: Individual and group programming to prevent teenage pregnancy. Stand & Deliver: Academic mentoring. Parent Education Family & Community Resource Center: Classes, events and individual support for families. Putting Children First: Class for divorcing parents. Siempre Papa: Parenting group for Latino fathers. The Parenting Journey: Parent education curriculum for vulnerable families. Young Empowered Parents: Case management and group support for young parents. Emotional Wellness Counseling Center: Professional mental health treatment. Elder Outreach: Home-based support for older adults. Employee Assistance Program: Training, consultation and assessment for employees and employers. Samaritans of Merrimack Valley: Comprehensive suicide prevention trainings and postvention support. Therapeutic Mentoring: Community-based support for youth in treatment. 2015 Annual Report 1 Dear Friends, We are proud to share with you this annual report, which highlights the work of Family Services in its fiscal year ending 9/30/2015. Since its founding, the organization has worked diligently to improve the lives of children and families in our community. In 2015, Family Services continued with that tradition, and did so with great success. This past year, Family Services improved the lives of over 4,000 children and families. But we did not do this alone. The work of our organization is the work of a community. Hundreds of donors, volunteers and staff assist the organization in fulfilling its mission…to empower, nurture and support children and families through life’s challenges to help them reach their full potential. This mission is carried out in a wide variety of over 20 programs. From play groups for young families to inhome care for isolated elders, Family Services provides programs across the lifespan. expanded the scope of six of its programs. The important part of all this growth is the positive impact it is having on the community and its members. Once again, the impact we are able to have is the result of the investment of time and resources from donors, volunteers, staff and collaborators. Family Services became the fiscal sponsor for the Lawrence/Methuen Community Coalition, began operation of a Family & Community Resource Center, established seven new collaborations and partnerships, and 2015 Annual Report 2 Youth Development Family Services is committed to helping young people navigate the difficult stage of adolescence by recognizing and building on their strengths. Key to this approach is providing young people with opportunities to discover and utilize their personal strengths and create a positive peer community. Through mentoring, life skills training and leadership programs, Family Services brings young people out of their comfort zones and onto the path of success. In FY2015, Family Services served 851 young people (ages birth-18) through seven youth development programs. 2015 Highlights CASA volunteer advocates spent 11,885 hours advocating on behalf of the best interests of 223 abused and neglected children. 100% of the 98 students matched with an academic mentor reported improved grades. 4,113 hours of wellness classes and case management were provided to 440 atrisk youth to improve skills for healthy living. 2015 Annual Report 3 Parent Education Parent education programs offered by Family Services provide individual and group support aimed at helping parents gain knowledge and skills to raise healthy, happy children. Grounded in evidenced-based practices, parent education services help parents understand child and adolescent development, gain skills for responding to challenging behaviors, and offer opportunities to nurture and care for all family members. In FY2015, Family Services served 949 parents and guardians looking to change their parenting and improve outcomes for their children. 2015 Highlights 342 hours of playgroups, support groups, and parenting classes were provided to parents of all ages. 98% of parents completing parent education courses reported improving their ability to nurture and care for their children. 455 referrals for additional community resources were provided connecting parents with basic needs assistance, education, emotional support and continued parent education training. 2015 Annual Report 4 Emotional Wellness Mental health and emotional wellness are a necessary foundation for success in life. Many people, at one point in their lives experience trauma or struggle with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. For many, professional help is required. Family Services provides a wide array of prevention and treatment services with the goal of achieving wellness for today, and hope for the future. 2015 Highlights In FY2015, Family Services helped 2,929 people take care of their own or their loved-one’s emotional wellbeing. 49 young people received 2,507 hours of therapeutic mentoring, which provides one-on-one support in community settings to achieve behavioral health goals. The Samaritans of Merrimack Valley provided suicide prevention training and education to over 1,407 individuals in 55 Massachusetts communities. 5,684 individual and family counseling sessions were held with professional mental health therapists. 2015 Annual Report 5 Financial Report Statement of revenue, expenditures and changes in net assets for the fiscal year ended September, 30, 2015. Sumberg Eszter Vajda John Weaver Debra Weiss Ford, Esq. 2015 Annual Report 13 Audit Committee Report Auditor’s Report The purpose of the Audit Committee is to assist the Board of Directors of Family Services of the Merrimack Valley in fulfilling their oversight responsibilities in regards to the accounting and financial reporting practices of the organization and the system of internal financial controls. The Committee is also responsible for the selection of and communication with the outside auditors and evaluation of the outside auditors’ independence. Family Services is in the third year of a three year contract with Shaheen, Pallone & Associates as outside auditors. The charter of the Audit Committee is reviewed annually and updated as necessary by the Audit Committee and the Family Services’ Board of Directors.
