Helping you gain more benefits from
your Masternaut implementation.
At a time when the sustainability and environmental awareness of the industry is under
the spotlight, tackling the issue of vehicle emissions has become the second highest
priority for fleet managers behind cost management.
Masternaut’s real-time tracking product already helps to reduce emissions by allowing
businesses to monitor excess engine idling and reduce unnecessary road miles.
Masternaut’s initiative is supported by the Energy Saving Trust who are recommending
the use of telematics as part of their top tips for greener fleet management. The company
is also putting the finishing touches to a range of GreenerFleet tools which will provide a
powerful measurement and management tool for lowering carbon emissions.
The first in a range of new developments
will be the GreenerFleet live carbon
calculator. Masternaut’s system already
captures accurate vehicle mileage via the
MCU (mobile collection unit) fitted to each
vehicle. The system will link this to the
manufacturer’s official carbon emission per
km for each vehicle and hence present a
daily, weekly or even monthly carbon
footprint figure for each vehicle and
driver. Many organisations who were
consulted as part of the development
suggested that the system will aid them in
meeting the requirements for ISO 14001
accreditation, which recognises companies
who show a commitment to improving their
environmental performance.

At Masternaut we have a firm belief in
enabling our customers to gain the full
benefit of the solutions they are using.
Moreover, we believe that training customers
should be part and parcel of our aftersales
service, so we host these sessions at the
Masternaut HQ at no cost. Every 4th
Tuesday of each month throughout the year,
customers can come along and learn and
exchange new ideas and share their
experiences of the Masternaut system.
These FREE 4th Tuesday training sessions
are proving to be very popular so to secure
your space get in touch with our Training

that extends Masternaut to hand held devices. Rapide gives
busy ‘managers on the move’ access to the full features and
functionality of our services while they are out and about. I can
personally recommend Rapide as I use it all of the time to gain a clear picture of
activity among our Masternaut sales and service teams. We predict that it will
become a firm favourite among mobile managers.
We have a busy event season on the horizon, which gives us a fantastic opportunity
to promote our brand and introduce new customers to Masternaut. If you are

Masternaut gains Thatcham
Category 5 accreditation
Masternaut has achieved Thatcham Category 5 for its vehicle tracking system. Category 5 ensures the
highest level of Police response in the case of vehicle theft.
Masternaut is the first commercial vehicle telematics supplier to
secure Category 5 for a full range of vehicles including vans,
HGVs and plant. Masternaut is also the first online fleet management
solution to offer what is regarded as the highest security
rating available.
With Thatcham Category 5 any stolen Masternaut-equipped vehicle
will automatically receive the quickest Police response available at
the time. As well as minimising any operational difficulties through
quick retrieval of any stolen vehicle, Masternaut customers can
benefit from favourable insurance premiums.
“There has been a 100% recovery rate amongst
vehicles fitted with Thatcham Category 5 tracking
systems and all but one vehicle was recovered within
two hours” says Mike Briggs, Vehicle Security Manager
at Thatcham. “For us Masternaut is very important as it
will open up a very significant commercial vehicle
market and fleet operators and their insurers can
be assured that vehicles will have the ultimate in
vehicle security”.
The Masternaut Thatcham Category 5 system comprises a covert
telematics unit with an automated arm and disarm system linked to
an electronic ID key that identifies authorised drivers. The system
automatically detects any illegal vehicle movement and drivers are
informed immediately. UK and European tracking and Police liaison
is handled by dedicated Category 5 approved control rooms. Only
with a Category 5 system can a vehicle be legally immobilised by
remotely disabling the starter motor.

Masternaut keeps
bikers on the road
Bikers Legal Defence, the largest motorcycle hire and accident
management specialist in the UK, has invested in Masternaut.
“We chose the Masternaut solution as it was the best for our requirements,” said
Stuart Dobson, Operations Director: Workshop and Fleet. “It interfaced with our
Paragon route planning and scheduling software and gave us minute by minute
visibility of our mobile operation. Using Masternaut we have been able to improve
service levels, increase operational efficiency and reduce costs, in fact the
Masternaut system will have paid for itself in the first six months of use.”
In addition to real time monitoring of vehicle movements Bikers Legal Defence also
uses the reports produced by Masternaut to refine their job scheduling.
“We offer a two time slot for deliveries and collections, however using Masternaut to
monitor individual schedules we can hone this, keeping our customers up to date if
they call us and even sending text message alerts prior to arrival,” continued Stuart
Dobson. “Masternaut also allows us to dynamically manage the fleet; we can allocate
the nearest resource, prioritise jobs and respond to ad hoc requests. This has led to
a reduction in operational costs, improved health and safety monitoring for the mobile
workforce and enhanced vehicle security.”

Barloworld boosts service to
30,000 fork lift trucks with
Masternaut tracking
As we celebrate our 5th Birthday
we would like to take the
opportunity to welcome back
Rachel Hewson after the birth of
her third child Madeleine who was
born in November of last year.
Igloo Thermo-Logistics investor Duncan Bannatyne
learns all about Masternaut.
On a recent trip to Scotland, Masternaut MD, Martin Port, bumped
into serial entrepreneur Duncan Bannatyne OBE who stars in
BBC2’s Dragons Den. Together with fellow investor Richard Farleigh,
Duncan Bannatyne is an investor in Igloo Thermo-Logistics, who are
enthusiastic users of Masternaut products featured in the previous
issue of newsXtra.
It was a chance in a million that the two entrepreneurs should meet
and it gave them a great opportunity to discuss the success of Igloo
Thermo-Logistics. The company was again featured in a Dragons
Den review of successful winners on 1 August 2007 and we are
delighted to learn that Igloo Thermo-Logistics is going from strength
to strength.
Although this is the only logistics company he invests in that we are
aware of, there is a link to Duncan Bannatyne's past. At the start of
his entrepreneurial career Duncan Bannatyne sold ice cream and ran
a fleet of ice cream vans; Masternaut certainly would have been a
useful technology to have around at the time.
Masternaut has won a five year £1 million contract with
Barloworld Handling to provide web-based vehicle tracking for
550 service vehicles.
From left to right: Richard Farleigh, investor; Alistair Turner, co-founder; Anthony Coates-Smith,
co-founder; Duncan Bannatyne OBE, investor.
Masternaut has invited Duncan Bannatyne to afternoon tea together
with Igloo Thermo-Logistics, who might like to deliver the
sandwiches in one of their refrigerated vehicles! He will be able to
meet the rest of the team and learn even more about how the
Masternaut services are assisting other customers to enjoy greater
business success. Martin Port said: “It was great to meet a fellow
entrepreneur who has been so successful. We respect Duncan
Bannatyne’s achievements not only as a successful entrepreneur,
but also as someone who has shown dedication and commitment
to supporting numerous charities. We look forward to meeting
Duncan again to discuss the opportunities of working together.”
Rachel has been with us since day one
when she joined as Customer Services
Director. Having overseen the growth of the
team to its current strength of 30, and her
family, with the birth of twin boys Alex and
Finlay in November 2004, Rachel is now
Internal Projects Auditor. Responsible for
reviewing, managing and updating internal
processes Rachel ensures we maintain the
highest quality of service delivery across the
whole company.

Masternaut takes the lead on Child Safety
Masternaut assists specialist
building contractor to provide
superior service
Five years at the top
Masternaut has teamed up with one of its customers, baby care
retailer Mamas & Papas, to give away 100 car seats to worthy
charities in a bid to raise the profile of child safety.
Nominated by Masternaut customers,
charities such as the NSPCC, St John’s
Ambulance and Physcap, a Leeds based
charity dedicated to improving the quality of
life for children suffering from severe
physical disabilities, have all received seats.
Other organisations such as the Bromford
Housing Group, Britannia Road Children’s
Centre and Braishfield Primary School can
now transport children safely and in
accordance with new legislation thanks to
Masternaut.
In response to growing concern from our
clients about the correct use of child seats
and booster cushions, we commissioned
research into the real scale of this worrying
issue. YouGov, in the first survey since the
new child restraint law came into effect a
year ago, found a staggering 76% of
people who carry children as passengers
did not know the correct legal requirement
for seat restraint.
Sharpfibre Ltd, a leading European specialist contractor that installs
and maintains passive fire protection and insulation systems has
fitted its entire fleet with Masternaut to help track installation
engineers, replacing the need for telephoning each operator several
times a day to pinpoint exactly where they are.
“Having identified a worrying lack of
awareness of the new legislation it was
important to us as responsible road users
to do our bit,” said Martin Port, Managing
Director of Masternaut. “As a parent myself
I am only too aware of the potential
dangers to children if they are not properly
secured within a moving vehicle.”
This year marks the 5th birthday of
Masternaut. The organisation has
grown from strength to strength and
rightly claims market leadership in
telematics throughout Europe.
In the UK, Masternaut is achieving
huge year-on-year growth. Such is the
demand for our services we are
opening regional offices in Ireland and
Scotland. This not only will help us to
expand our business in these regions
and provide improved levels of local
support, it will also enable us
to gather information about specific
applications required by customers in
Ireland and Scotland.

and improved health and safety conditions for drivers. Masternaut
also provides the driver the ability to create and edit driving routes
and real time navigation information.
Masternaut also supports the company’s strict health and safety
policy. The company was recently awarded a RoSPA Gold Medal in
recognition of achieving a RoSPA Gold award for the past 5
consecutive years. Although the majority of the fleet is classed as
Road Maintenance Plant and does not legally require a tachograph,
Masternaut enables driver-working hours to be monitored by the use
of Unique Driver Identification Keys that accurately monitor an
individual’s driving activities. This information also supports and
provides back up information for the payroll services and human
resource department.
“Masternaut recently replaced our existing vehicle management
system. We decided to change to Masternaut as they offered a more
sophisticated solution, they were flexible enough to meet our exact
requirements and their customer service was excellent,” said Rob
Pearson, IT Manager at Riggott & Co. “In addition being able to
access information in real time via a simple web interface enables us
to improve the efficiency of both our vehicle usage and driver hours.
The system also greatly enhances our customer service, as we can
respond in a timely and accurate manner to client requests.”

Masternaut takes the lead on Child Safety
Masternaut assists specialist
building contractor to provide
superior service
Five years at the top
Masternaut has teamed up with one of its customers, baby care
retailer Mamas & Papas, to give away 100 car seats to worthy
charities in a bid to raise the profile of child safety.
Nominated by Masternaut customers,
charities such as the NSPCC, St John’s
Ambulance and Physcap, a Leeds based
charity dedicated to improving the quality of
life for children suffering from severe
physical disabilities, have all received seats.
Other organisations such as the Bromford
Housing Group, Britannia Road Children’s
Centre and Braishfield Primary School can
now transport children safely and in
accordance with new legislation thanks to
Masternaut.
In response to growing concern from our
clients about the correct use of child seats
and booster cushions, we commissioned
research into the real scale of this worrying
issue. YouGov, in the first survey since the
new child restraint law came into effect a
year ago, found a staggering 76% of
people who carry children as passengers
did not know the correct legal requirement
for seat restraint.
Sharpfibre Ltd, a leading European specialist contractor that installs
and maintains passive fire protection and insulation systems has
fitted its entire fleet with Masternaut to help track installation
engineers, replacing the need for telephoning each operator several
times a day to pinpoint exactly where they are.
“Having identified a worrying lack of
awareness of the new legislation it was
important to us as responsible road users
to do our bit,” said Martin Port, Managing
Director of Masternaut. “As a parent myself
I am only too aware of the potential
dangers to children if they are not properly
secured within a moving vehicle.”
This year marks the 5th birthday of
Masternaut. The organisation has
grown from strength to strength and
rightly claims market leadership in
telematics throughout Europe.
In the UK, Masternaut is achieving
huge year-on-year growth. Such is the
demand for our services we are

Ward Recycling, a leading environmental

Masternaut for tracking its entire fleet of 50
collection vehicles. This has already led to a
40% increase in productivity. Masternaut
also tracks sales representatives’ cars,
generates management reports and

Masternaut strikes success for Sentinel
Sentinel, industry leaders in lightning protection and earthing
services, is benefiting from Masternaut fleet tracking and
resource management.
The Masternaut service enables managers at the company’s headquarters to
monitor the movement of the team of field-based engineers in real time via an easy
to use web interface. This service provides vital information to help improve the
safety and security of both drivers and vehicles.
Sentinel specialises in the design, installation and maintenance of lightning
protection and earthing services nationwide for a wide variety of clients including
Heathrow Airport, English Heritage, Network Rail and British Nuclear Fuels Limited.
Masternaut enables Sentinel to monitor the movement of a specific vehicle or view
the location of the entire fleet at a given point in time. Masternaut also provides the
ability to create and edit driving routes and real time navigation information.
“Using Masternaut I know where each of my vehicles is at any given point in time,
this information enables me to react quickly if required,” said Steve Shipman,
Logistics Manager, he continued “Our work is undertaken in the field by lone
workers, most of it involves climbing and some of our client sites are remote.
Knowing where each vehicle is and how long it has been there enables me to keep
an eye on the team.”
The Masternaut System also provides a range of other features that may benefit the
company in the future including job scheduling, real time navigation information and
driver management services. The system can also create customised reports for
payroll, human resources and performance monitoring.
Rapide allows users to monitor the exact
movement of their entire fleet of vehicles with
minute-by-minute updates tracked by global
positioning satellites. Rapide also locates
and monitors individual vehicles and enables
access to 7-day movement histories for
each one.
Rapide has been carefully designed to be
user friendly and requires no specialist
knowledge of mobile computer devices.
Users simply access Rapide using the mobile
browser on their handheld device via a
dedicated website address. They can then
access all current operational information on
a group-by-group basis including a real time
map showing a vehicle’s current location.
The user can simply click on the vehicle of
interest to display a new screen giving full
details of the vehicle movements and driver's
activity for that day. Those accessing the
system can also interrogate the history file for
the past 7 days to present a clear view of the
whole week's movements.
Rapide also provides the location of other
nearby fleet vehicles and access to
a comprehensive database of points of
interest. It then acts as a route-planning tool
giving turn by turn directions and
notifications of local traffic problems.

O2 partners with Three X to deliver
critical mobile business applications
Masternaut's mobile solutions division, Three X,
has been chosen as a best-in-class supplier

customers who have made huge gains
through implementing our technology and
their people are working in a more
enlightened environment where information
is readily available to help them do their jobs
better. This means that those who deal at
the sharp point – with the customers – are
more informed and suffer less frustration
with answering questions because they
have the information they need.
Accessing the right
information at the
right time
Take for example Company A. This
organisation has long implemented a call
centre to deal with customer queries. Their
customers' details are all held on a CRM
system and the call centre has a high level
of expertise in dealing with queries. Now by
adding the ability to provide exact detail on
when and where their mobile service
engineers are at any time, they are able to
keep them very well informed. They can
warn the customer of a delay or even reallocate the task to another engineer who
can get to site quicker. By keeping the
customer informed they are providing a
benchmark for other service organisations
to follow. Of course this isn't just for service
companies, this level of communication
could be applied in virtually any
organisation that would see itself as
customer-focused. The benefits are clear:
the customer is kept informed and is
therefore happy and the call centre
operators have fewer irate customers to
deal with because they have access to
information that they can share.
Company B has an enlightened approach to
how its installers perform their work. Not
only are all its vehicles tracked, the company
also uses Masternaut to enable flexible
working. The nature of the work is
demanding and installers often have to work
long hours. Masternaut verifies that time
sheets are exact and should an installer
want to work fewer hours on a particular day
it can show management how the operator
is balancing his workload for a particular
week. Time sheets are accurate and staff
are paid and rewarded for proven effort. This
is providing the installers with the ability to
be self-managed and has encouraged a
positive work ethic.
Doing the right thing
The Drivers Working Time Directive has
raised several issues about the length of
time drivers spend behind the wheel.
Tachographs traditionally are the first point
of reference, but with the accuracy of
Masternaut reporting, drivers can feel more
confident in providing exact details about
their working time. Company C's drivers can
log exactly where they were at any time,
helping alleviate the burden of proof through
a service that runs in the background and is
100 per cent tamperproof.
Disputes of all kinds can be resolved if the
right information is at hand. Company D
delivers large items that potentially could
damage property if the delivery driver is not
careful. Accidents do happen regardless of
how careful the drivers are about their work.
Therefore, disputes do arise but with
Masternaut the customer service managers
are better equipped to resolve the conflicts
because they know whether or not their
drivers have been on site and when. If the
driver is at fault, the company can identify
the vehicle and the individual driver and
compensate the customer, which helps
maintain better relations.
Improving accountability
The new tax law for company vans was
mentioned in Issue 1 of newsXtra, since
then Company E has reported that
Masternaut is helping them to keep a track
of personal usage. Drivers of company vans
have suddenly seen a perk of the job being
taken away at one stroke and now they have
the burden of proof resting on them
regarding their tax allowance amendments.
The double whammy of taking away what
was seen by some as a right and the tax
change has not gone down well, particularly
as keeping a record of personal usage can
be arduous. Masternaut reports, however,
are helping to show drivers exactly when
and where they have been using the vehicle.
This makes it much easier for them to
provide the required proof as each driver
has a personal, unique ID and the system is
set up to separate business and personal
use. This has gone a long way to alleviate
the issue. The vans are now only being used
when necessary and a more positive
attitude to company vehicles is developing.
The Accelerator Programme is a rigorous measure of the robustness
and reliability of the Three X portfolio of mobile software solutions for
field service applications. These enable field and office-based staff to
accurately, quickly and securely exchange business critical
information to help boost productivity and maximise customer
service and satisfaction.
The partnership will significantly increase Three X's visibility
throughout the UK and will strengthen the partnership between
Three X and one of the most reliable mobile networks in the UK.
Three X will train O2's regional sales teams, giving them product
knowledge and support. The two organisations will work jointly to
promote the mobile offerings.
“O2 is a crucial partner for us,” says Andrew
Tillman, “We could not be more pleased
that the organisation has chosen to work
with us and we look forward to much
success as we work together to provide
cutting-edge mobile solutions.”
Andrew Tillman, CEO, Three X said: “O2's accreditation is a fantastic
achievement for Three X. We have been delivering mobile solutions
for 25 years and this partnership with O2 helps open up a world of
new possibilities within the SME market.”
Congestion charging came up in a
discussion with Company F. Its workforce
works right across London and individual
workers are regularly in and out of the
congestion zones. The company looked at
this in detail and saw that Masternaut could
help workers pay the congestion charges
and not incur fines. This application simply
sends an automatic message to the driver
via SMS and the matter is dealt with
promptly.
We have only touched on some of the
additional benefits that evolve from applying
Masternaut, but it is hoped that this will help
with your implementation. If you need further
information or would like to discuss how to
overcome issues with using our marketleading solutions, please don't hesitate to

Accessing the right
information at the
right time
Take for example Company A. This
organisation has long implemented a call
centre to deal with customer queries. Their
customers' details are all held on a CRM
system and the call centre has a high level
of expertise in dealing with queries. Now by
adding the ability to provide exact detail on
when and where their mobile service
engineers are at any time, they are able to
keep them very well informed. They can
warn the customer of a delay or even reallocate the task to another engineer who
can get to site quicker. By keeping the
customer informed they are providing a
benchmark for other service organisations
to follow. Of course this isn't just for service
companies, this level of communication
could be applied in virtually any
organisation that would see itself as
customer-focused. The benefits are clear:
the customer is kept informed and is
therefore happy and the call centre
operators have fewer irate customers to
deal with because they have access to
information that they can share.
Company B has an enlightened approach to
how its installers perform their work. Not
only are all its vehicles tracked, the company
also uses Masternaut to enable flexible
working. The nature of the work is
demanding and installers often have to work
long hours. Masternaut verifies that time
sheets are exact and should an installer
want to work fewer hours on a particular day
it can show management how the operator
is balancing his workload for a particular
week. Time sheets are accurate and staff
are paid and rewarded for proven effort. This
is providing the installers with the ability to
be self-managed and has encouraged a
positive work ethic.
Doing the right thing
The Drivers Working Time Directive has
raised several issues about the length of
time drivers spend behind the wheel.
Tachographs traditionally are the first point
of reference, but with the accuracy of
Masternaut reporting, drivers can feel more
confident in providing exact details about
their working time. Company C's drivers can
log exactly where they were at any time,
helping alleviate the burden of proof through
a service that runs in the background and is
100 per cent tamperproof.
Disputes of all kinds can be resolved if the
right information is at hand. Company D
delivers large items that potentially could
damage property if the delivery driver is not
careful. Accidents do happen regardless of
how careful the drivers are about their work.
Therefore, disputes do arise but with
Masternaut the customer service managers
are better equipped to resolve the conflicts
because they know whether or not their
drivers have been on site and when. If the
driver is at fault, the company can identify
the vehicle and the individual driver and
compensate the customer, which helps
maintain better relations.
Improving accountability
The new tax law for company vans was
mentioned in Issue 1 of newsXtra, since
then Company E has reported that
Masternaut is helping them to keep a track
of personal usage. Drivers of company vans
have suddenly seen a perk of the job being
taken away at one stroke and now they have
the burden of proof resting on them
regarding their tax allowance amendments.
The double whammy of taking away what
was seen by some as a right and the tax
change has not gone down well, particularly
as keeping a record of personal usage can
be arduous. Masternaut reports, however,
are helping to show drivers exactly when
and where they have been using the vehicle.
This makes it much easier for them to
provide the required proof as each driver
has a personal, unique ID and the system is
set up to separate business and personal
use. This has gone a long way to alleviate
the issue. The vans are now only being used
when necessary and a more positive
attitude to company vehicles is developing.
The Accelerator Programme is a rigorous measure of the robustness
and reliability of the Three X portfolio of mobile software solutions for
field service applications. These enable field and office-based staff to
accurately, quickly and securely exchange business critical
information to help boost productivity and maximise customer
service and satisfaction.
The partnership will significantly increase Three X's visibility
throughout the UK and will strengthen the partnership between
Three X and one of the most reliable mobile networks in the UK.
Three X will train O2's regional sales teams, giving them product
knowledge and support. The two organisations will work jointly to
promote the mobile offerings.
“O2 is a crucial partner for us,” says Andrew
Tillman, “We could not be more pleased
that the organisation has chosen to work
with us and we look forward to much
success as we work together to provide
cutting-edge mobile solutions.”
Andrew Tillman, CEO, Three X said: “O2's accreditation is a fantastic
achievement for Three X. We have been delivering mobile solutions
for 25 years and this partnership with O2 helps open up a world of
new possibilities within the SME market.”
Congestion charging came up in a
discussion with Company F. Its workforce
works right across London and individual
workers are regularly in and out of the
congestion zones. The company looked at
this in detail and saw that Masternaut could
help workers pay the congestion charges
and not incur fines. This application simply
sends an automatic message to the driver
via SMS and the matter is dealt with
promptly.
We have only touched on some of the
additional benefits that evolve from applying
Masternaut, but it is hoped that this will help
with your implementation. If you need further
information or would like to discuss how to
overcome issues with using our marketleading solutions, please don't hesitate to
contact Masternaut.

Helping you gain more benefits from
your Masternaut implementation.
At a time when the sustainability and environmental awareness of the industry is under
the spotlight, tackling the issue of vehicle emissions has become the second highest
priority for fleet managers behind cost management.
Masternaut’s real-time tracking product already helps to reduce emissions by allowing
businesses to monitor excess engine idling and reduce unnecessary road miles.
Masternaut’s initiative is supported by the Energy Saving Trust who are recommending
the use of telematics as part of their top tips for greener fleet management. The company
is also putting the finishing touches to a range of GreenerFleet tools which will provide a
powerful measurement and management tool for lowering carbon emissions.
The first in a range of new developments
will be the GreenerFleet live carbon
calculator. Masternaut’s system already
captures accurate vehicle mileage via the
MCU (mobile collection unit) fitted to each
vehicle. The system will link this to the
manufacturer’s official carbon emission per
km for each vehicle and hence present a
daily, weekly or even monthly carbon
footprint figure for each vehicle and
driver. Many organisations who were
consulted as part of the development
suggested that the system will aid them in
meeting the requirements for ISO 14001
accreditation, which recognises companies
who show a commitment to improving their
environmental performance.
