Chapter 1: General and basic information
Tool 1: TRANSECT WALK
Number of participants: 11
male: 7
female: 4
Description:
The transect walk is a tool to discuss information related to land use of the village. Transects are
done with structured walks through typical village landscape. Such walks can cover part of the
village or the entire village, taking an hour or up to some
hours. Transects consist of two elements: the walk and a
diagram that records the information of the walks.
Objectives:
Identify typical land use types and their characteristics.
With whom:
Mixed group of farmers (female and male)

Tool 2: BRIEF VILLAGE HISTORY
Number of participants: 8
male: 5
female: 3
Description:
This tool helps the villagers to remind all important events which happened in the village
in the past. It also helps villagers of the community to be aware of their effort passing
each period of their recent history.
Draw a line on A0 paper. One end of the line will be „now‟.
Explain to the households that this is the History Line
Ask the households to recall key events (positive and negative)
throughout history (from the earliest to now) and the year they
occurred.
Objectives:
 Find out general information and important events in the recent village history.
 Identify important events that brought about some economic, social, cultural etc change in
the village.
 Change in agricultural trend due to these events.

Tool 3: SEASONAL CALENDAR
Number of participants: 4
male: 3
female: 1
Description:
A seasonal calendar is a participatory tool to explore seasonal changes (e.g. gender- specific
workload, diseases, income, expenditure etc.).
Objectives:
Learn about changes in livelihoods over the year and to show the seasonality of agricultural and
non agricultural workload, food availability, human diseases, gender- specific income and
expenditure, water, forage, credit.
Methods:
The VDAP team discuss and fill in the form with the values (quantity, intensity, ) for
each topic (see sample)

Tool 5: RESOURCE MAP
Number of participants: 13
1
male: 12
female:
Description:
The Village Resource Map is a tool that
helps us to learn about a community and its
resource base. The primary concern is not to
develop an accurate map but to get useful
information about local perceptions of
resources. The VDAP members should
further develop and detail the content of the
map according to what is important to them.
Objectives:
To learn the villagers' perception of what
natural resources are found in the
community and how they are used.
With whom:
Female and male focus groups
Step 1: Assess current situation
 What resources are abundant? (potential)
 What resources are scarce? (constraints)
 Does everyone have equal access to land?
 Do women have access to land?
 What is the quantum of fallow land (land left uncultivated)
 Do the poor have access to land?
 Where do people go to collect water? Who collects water?
 Where do people go to collect firewood? Who collects firewood?
 Where do people go to graze livestock?
 What kind of development activities do you carry out as a whole community?

Tool 19: Venn diagram
Number of participants: 10
male: 5
female: 5
Description:
The Venn diagram shows institutions, organizations, groups and important individuals found in
the village, as well as the villagers view of their importance in the community. Additionally the
diagram explains who participates in these groups in terms of gender and wealth. The
institutional relationship diagram also indicates how close the contact and cooperation between
those organizations and groups is.
Objectives:
 Identify external and internal organizations/groups/important persons active in the
community
 Identify who participates in local organizations/institutions by gender and wealth
 Figure out how the different organizations and groups relate to each other in terms of
contact, co-operation, and flow of information and provision of services.

facilitating collective initiatives. SHGs can be formed under Governmental programs like SGSY
under SREDA, by NGOs, by missionary organizations, by banks like NABARD, and others like
SIMFED, ICAR etc. We do a ranking of the SHGs to identify which ones are the best performing
and why.
Objectives:
 Identify SHGs active in the community, who has formed them and which activities they
undertake
 Assess the role of SHGs in providing incomes to the poor
 Identify potentials and main problems
