FALL 2009 welcome HEADMASTER’S As you enjoy reading about the exciting winter and spring happenings at Clairbourn in 2009, I hope you’ll notice, not only the wide range of activities, but the depth to which each one goes to enrich the lives of our students. The Oregon Trail and Pioneer Day activities, covered in the lead article, form a great example of integrated learning activities that cover all major academic subjects as well as art, Robert W. Nafie, Ph.D. music, and sports enrichment for the third Headmaster grade. The preschool also plunged their art instruction and visiting artist program to a deeper level this year by setting up a special museum to showcase the students’ artwork—all formally displayed around the Seiter Center play yard for the rest of the school and parents to tour and enjoy. Additional noteworthy sections in this issue are the graduation section for the Class of 2009, the school’s Annual Report highlighting the CFA’s very successful fundraising efforts and the generosity of Clairbourn families, and the Alumni News section featuring the 1950 through 1979 class reunion. I hope you’ll join with me in rejoicing in all the evidence of good that Clairbourn has to offer both to current students and alumni who use the foundation they have been given to flourish in their post-Clairbourn endeavors. table OF CONTENTS • features The Pioneer Experience 1 “Well-Prepared for Success” Clairbourn’s Graduation Speech 15 Dr. Nafie’s Graduation Remarks 18 Class of 2009 High School Choices 19 •departments Spotlight on Success 5 Campus Kaleidoscope 10 Alumni News 20 2008-2009 Annual Report 41 The purpose of Clairbourn School shall be to demonstrate in a practical way the unlimited nature of all true instruction through educational opportunities which are harmonious with the teachings of Christian Science and in accordance with accepted professional standards of educational excellence. The Pioneer Experience STUDYING THE OREGON TRAIL H istory is recreated every year by Clairbourn third-graders studying the Oregon Trail and the early pioneers. This cooperative learning activity is filled with academic challenges as well as plenty of excitement and fun. To set the foundation, students read If You Traveled West In A Covered Wagon, by Ellen Levine and Elroy Freemand, and watch several videos on pioneers which provide them with an overview of the life, hardships, and strange new experiences of pioneer families as they travelled on the Oregon Trail. With their history lessons fresh in mind, the students are then grouped into units with specific family roles for them to play. To ensure realism, and to help them feel like real pioneers, girls dress in bonnets with aprons and boys wear cowboy hats with vests. After each group selects their own historic family names and chooses occupations, the men designate a wagon train leader amongst themselves and hire trail guides (the teachers) to lead them out west. FALL 2009 BRANCHING OUT Careful preparations to make and pack the pretend wagons follow for each family. Students use their art skills to create wagons out of paper and then use their math skills to calculate the amount of supplies they’ll need to survive the trip. They also have to determine the number of hours they will travel, graph the weather they will encounter, Students study the geography of the Oregon Trail, learn the states, and work with maps—specifically noting the lakes, rivers, landmarks, mountains and prairies they will encounter. and study the geography of the Oregon Trail. For the students, the year is now 1850 and it is late April. On the trail, students develop their science skills by identifying plants, animals, cloud formations, constellations, and even learn about food preservation techniques. They also develop their social studies skills by reading up on the lifestyles and customs of Indian tribes, trappers, and soldiers from that time. There is always something new and exciting for them to write about because their wagon train adventures on campus range from crossing dangerous rivers to putting out pretend prairie fires and negotiating with Indian tribes. Even making camp is a big part of the experience. When the wagon trains are at rest, students experience the cultural aspects of pioneer life including eating authentic foods, singing and memorizing period songs, square dancing and round dancing to fiddle music, playing games like checkers, jacks, and tug-of-war, and making crafts like quilt squares, clay pots, and leather pouches. They also have a chance to enjoy whatever special item they chose to bring with them on the trail such as a doll, a fishing rod, a harmonica, book, or marbles. Even though computers weren’t authentic trail gear, students use special software in computer class called “The Oregon Trail, Version 1.2” to play simulation games that allow them to virtually travel the trail and manage all aspects of the journey thus utilizing their math, problem3 the pioneer EXPERIENCE Jacob Valenzuela, Paul Soulanille, and Chris Myers march with their classmates in an Independence Day parade. This includes choosing the best departure time for the wagon train, purchasing supplies for the trip, and managing their responsibilities along the way. Students also take a field trip to the Banning House, built in 1864 in Wilmington, California, where the highly successful pioneer, Phineas Banning, lived once he finished his own journey west by land and sea via Panama. On the tour, they get to see his 23 room mansion, the one-room school house, the stage coach barn, and the gardens as they existed over 100 years ago. To cap-off the experience, third-graders invite their parents to a Pioneer Day celebration which is a daylong extravaganza of pioneer activities that showcases everything the students have learned during the unit. Students compete in sack races, put on an elaborate show complete with square dancing, dramatic journal readings, and songs, and then after more crafts and games, they have an authentic pioneer lunch. Each year the program evolves to include new and exciting activities with the goal to make the pioneer experience alive and meaningful, and to encourage each student to use his or her imagination and to feel and act like a real pioneer. 4 Alex Smith and his mother, Ria Smith, enjoying the Pioneer Day Festivities. She also won and lost games with grace and class while maintaining the goal of helping her team to achieve excellent results. Clairbourn’s After School Thespians Perform Much Ado About Nothing Middle-schoolers in the drama elective at Clairbourn School successfully delivered a delightfully fresh performance of the romantic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, by William Shakespeare. The story of trickery and sabotage surrounding the pending nuptials of Claudio and Hero lent itself well to a modern adaptation where a cell phone became the medium of deception at the heart of the plot. Drama teacher, Paul Barker, explains, “In the original play, Claudio is deceived by something he sees in a window. We felt that the window could be exchanged for the screen of a cell phone with the picture being doctored by Don John to deceive Claudio. It worked so much better than we had anticipated.” Prior to rehearsal, students worked for months to gain an understanding of the meaning of FALL 2009 BRANCHING OUT Andrea Ramirez was the winner of the Ann Pearson Memorial Humanitarian Award. She approached the Marines at Blecksmith Hall in Pasadena to see if they would appreciate receiving Girl Scout cookies after they deployed, and they said, “Yes.” So, to support these hard-working soldiers far from home, Lynn and her son, Charlie, spearheaded an on-campus cookie and letter drive for the troops. Overall, 140 boxes of Girl Scout cookies and letters were collected from students, parents, and Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops. In addition, Gunnery Sergeant Art Blancoromero from the Marine Corps visited Clairbourn’s Cub Scout Pack #364 and spoke about his five tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. Fifth-graders also met with Active Sergeants Timothy Johnston and Marvin Ruano from the US Marine Corps Reserve Battalion, based at Blecksmith Hall in Pasadena, who shared their military experiences and spent time guiding students on how to write meaningful letters to the troops overseas. Door to the Future Thanks to a second grade tour of the Door of Hope facility, which helps homeless families in Pasadena, a wonderful idea was born to honor the efforts of the less-fortunate to improve their circumstances. Clairbourn parents Suzana and Kendall Roclord, who accompanied their eight-year-old son Troxell on a field trip, decided to create the first annual Door to the Future Award—a gift of a studio photography session with professional prints from their business, Roclord Studio Photography. According to a recent news article, the award is “given to a homeless family staying at the Door of Hope that has demonstrated significant progress toward becoming self-sufficient and that has demonstrated a hopeful future.” This year’s winners, who secured jobs, BRANCHING OUT FALL 2009 spotlight ON SUCCESS saved money, and progressed in other key life skills, were Tim and Ca’Sha Knight and their three children, Ariyah, Judah, and Jaiyah. A Student’s Mission to Share the Joy of Reading One Book One Child is the brainstorm of Clairbourn student Luke Palmer. Back in the Fourth Grade, Luke became inspired by a family friend who was doing charitable work in Africa. He realized that millions of children in the world do not have access to their own books. With the help of his parents, Luke founded One Book One Child in 2006 and has since been collecting books from schools, organizations, and families to send to children in Africa. Most recently, he sponsored his first “local give” event called “Bound Together by the Fun of Books” to benefit the students of Para Los Niños—an organization that runs a LAUSD charter school on the edges of Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. To help with the event, Luke created a Kids’ Council of Clairbourn classmates including Jamie Kwong, Alex, Maddie and Shea Corwin, Jackson Codiga, Joey and Jack Steele, Tillie Pederson, and Clairbourn alum Madison Bender. During their spring book drive, over 2,000 books were collected, sorted, boxed, and delivered to the Para Los Niños book fair. Artist-in-Residence Melanie Hadley At Clairbourn, a major part of helping students to find their passion in life involves exposing them at an early age to inspiring role-models, speakers, artists, writers, musicians, and athletes. Through student assemblies, classroom workshops, and one-on-one sessions with working professionals, students can feed their dreams for their futures and begin working at an early age toward their goals. This year for the elementary and middle school grades, the Artist-in-Residence Program provided the gift of music as it is meant to be heard—direct from the instrument in a live setting. The award-winning pianist and international performer, Melanie Hadley, spent a week on campus as a guest instructor for all the music classes and conducted one-onone teaching sessions with advanced piano students. During her residency week, Ms. Hadley organized 10 a special piano recital showcasing the talents of fourthgraders Dylan Kwang and Nicholas Shupe, fifth-graders Kevin Tie and Jonathan Ting, sixth-grader Sophy Zhao, and eighth-graders Harrison Jung and Kevin Chan. The performances were beautifully executed and highly professional, and of special note was the standing ovation given to Kevin Chan by the Clairbourn student body for his solo piece by Chopin, “Scherzo in B flat minor.” As a means to further inspire Clairbourn’s music-loving students and their families, Ms. Hadley gave her own formal recital later that evening. Her program included works by J.S. Bach/Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and Gershwin. This Artist-in-Residence music program was made possible in part by the Dr. Robert T. and Jane A. MUSEUM DAY & BONONI VISITING ARTIST Great appreciation is expressed to the Bononi Family and the Early Childhood Department for their successful efforts to provide enrichment and early exposure to the arts for the younger students this year. The Bononi ArtistIn-Residence Program brought in sculpture artists, Lynn Forbes and Ralph Muncaster, to work directly with the Jr. Pre-Kindergarten through Kindergarten classes. Beginning with an art history lesson covering the work of three wellknown sculptors, the artists guided the students in making their own sculpture with professional-grade clay. Each child also received one-on-one training in the Lynn Forbes “Visual Dynamics” method of classical sculpting as taught at the Forbes School of Sculpture in Carlsbad, California FALL 2009 BRANCHING OUT (the largest sculpture school in the world). Once the children had completed their masterpieces, the works of art were formally displayed in the Early Childhood Department’s “Museum Show.” Students from all grade levels and ECD parents toured the show which, in addition to the sculptures, featured paintings, drawings, project displays, and three-dimensional works of art. By having a full-circle experience that included art history education, mentoring from working artists, hands-on creation time, and display of the creative works, students were exposed to the whole system of art-making and the deeper impact their creations can have on others beyond their own personal enjoyment. 11 campus KALEIDOSCOPE TNT Dunk Squad member Keith Cousino demonstrates some gymnastic moves to students in mid-air. TNT Dunk Squad Motivates Clairbourn Students Clairbourn students are literally setting their sights higher than ever before after experiencing the high-flying gymnastic-basketball stunt show and motivational talk given by the TNT Dunk Squad. Known for their daredevil tricks and aerial stunts combined with precision basketball dunks, the TNT Dunk Squad succeeded impressing and entertaining everyone who attended the show. Between tricks, they talked to students about how they achieved their athletic mastery with goal setting, intensive and consistent practice, leadership, and teamwork. They explained how important it is for each student to try their hardest and 12 do their best—even in the face of peer pressure. The enthusiasm from the students was unbounded, and many of them were chosen from the audience to participate in the basketball tricks and skits. This event was made possible by the Majovski family who set up a fund to bring motivational speakers to the school every year in memory of their daughter Lindsay who attended Clairbourn. The speakers are chosen for their ability to inspire students in following their dreams and living life to the fullest as Lindsay did during her lifetime. Clairbourn’s Eco-Adventure in Costa Rica Worlds away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, with its concrete parking lots and desert climate, twentytwo seventh and eighth grade students headed for the tropics on a ten-day Costa Rican eco-adventure during spring break. The trip started with a quick overnight in the capital city of San José followed by a journey to the Caribbean coast where they took a boat tour through the beautiful Tortuguerro National Park. Sloths, iguanas, howler monkeys, and many exotic birds in their natural habitat graciously made appearances along the way to the great delight of the students. After traveling by water, the group took individual rides on the Crazy Monkey Canopy Tour—a zipline through the air over the coastal forest of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The next day included water adventures, such as kayaking and snorkeling, and a hike to the Green Iguana Project Center where the indigenous people work to save the endangered species. After learning a great deal about iguanas, they moved on to the Sarapiqui area where the students toured Heliconia Island known for its rich foliage and wildlife. When night fell, class was not over! Whitewater rafting on the Sarapiqui River, running level two and three rapids, comprised the next adventure on the itinerary for Clairbourn students. When they were half-way down the river, students were offered a swim break and refreshments of exotic fruits prepared by the river guides. As if that weren’t enough to make for a memorable day, the group capped-off the evening by soaking in a local natural hot spring with a view of the steaming Arenal volcano in the distance. The next day was filled with horseback rides through the open fields and forested areas of the Arenal region, swimming at the base of the La Fortuna waterfall, and walking in the cloud forest in Monte Verde—all enabling the students to appreciate the lush beauty of Costa Rica and value its precious natural resources. To wrap up their trip, the students went on a final zipline tour at Gauchipelin, climbed up the face of a waterfall, rappelled into a river, and went inner-tubing down the Rio Nego River. Aside from the tremendous amount of fun the students had on their adventure, they also gained the most important element of travel abroad which is acquiring a greater understanding of another culture and understanding the interconnectedness of our world environment. 13 campus KALEIDOSCOPE Jacqueline Hwang, Bryan Gleason, Mina Kasama-Araiza, and Michael Ibarra work on calculating legal bills for mock clients while Malcolm Zeger and Ronni Carbajal-Cuccia watch over their shoulders. That seems like such a long time ago, and in many important ways, your journey has been our journey too. So much has happened over those years that would seem to threaten our way of life. This class was in Pre-Kindergarten when the world faced the dreaded Y2K bug in 1999-2000. It seemed like the functioning of the world was going to come to an end. But the world community prepared as best it could and remained confident that, together, solutions could be found for whatever happened, and it moved forward. The Y2K bug was not nearly the catastrophe it seemed like it would be, but we learned the important lesson that we need to understand our true circumstance, search confidently for the solutions we know exist, and move forward patiently one day at a time. This class was just beginning first grade when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. It was simply a Tuesday morning, like any other, but suddenly it seemed like the world as we knew it was coming to an end once more. The images were almost unbearable. We met for Chapel that morning (your class sat right over there), and as a class, as a school, and as a nation, we stayed together to face whatever would come next. We don’t yet have all the answers, but we’ve never stopped searching for the solutions that will mean progress for our entire planet and all the people on it. And today, we’re moving 18 forward patiently one day at a time. This class was here last October when the global financial system suffered its worst setback since the historic great depression of the 1930s. Many families are making difficult and unpleasant choices. Most people are feeling like we’ve lost some of the progress we worked hard to attain. What is important for you to observe and remember, as outgoing Clairbourn graduates, is that our response to adversity remains the same: 1) Understand our true circumstance, 2) search for solutions, confident that they exist, and 3) move forward patiently one day at a time. And now, you are moving on to your next school experience. We are all proud of what you have accomplished here and of what you have contributed to our school’s long tradition. You have had many successes and many more are to come. If history repeats itself, you’ll have setbacks. Perhaps, you’ll have many. Only next time, maybe you’ll remember that you’ve had special training in how to deal successfully with life’s setbacks. Perhaps you’ll remember to reason your way through that challenge using what you have learned here: 1. K now Your True Circumstance: Remember that each of you is the beloved child of God—never outside His care. 2. Search for Solutions and be Confident You Know They Exist: Remember that nothing is too difficult for the all-knowing, omnipotent Mind, your one true parent, and that He has already provided you all you’ll ever need. 3. Move Forward Patiently, One Step at a Time: Remember that each day is an opportunity for new growth wherever you are. Nothing should ever persuade you to stop—no missed assignment, no bad grade, no broken friendship, and no missed opportunity. Just keep moving forward! Thankfully, Sam and Courteney visited Clairbourn this last spring so Courteney could join her former classmates in some of the graduation festivities. While she was on campus, her father shared the following news about Courteney’s successes in her new school and specifically credited Clairbourn with giving her a great foundation for excellence. Courteney Case * ’09 Courteney’s father, Sam Case, wrote to the Alumni Office, “We were a little torn about taking Courteney away from Clairbourn in her final year of Middle School, but found that, once she arrived at Louisville Collegiate, her education from Pre-K through seventh grade had given her the strongest possible foundation to succeed at her new school. It was clear early on that the skills learned from Cort’s time with everyone at Clairbourn was much more than the state measured scores in English, math, science and foreign language. She had 20 learned to be a fully engaged citizen of her school and to represent herself with dignity and fortitude. She was complimented by everyone she came across for her ability to adapt and quickly support the causes in which she chose to take part. It goes without saying that Mrs. Barker in the Middle School (along with Miss Ruth Beckstrom, Miss Gorge, and Mrs. Sinclair among others) helped to mold Cort into a student that was poised to take on a move across the country and to be recognized by one of the most competitive private schools in the state as a stellar student who came with a strong foundation for learning and sincere interest in giving back to her community. For that, and a whole host of other accomplishments, we will always and forever cherish our years with Clairbourn. Cort is first and foremost a Cougar!” Additionally, Sam shared that during the first year at her new school, Louisville Collegiate, Courteney received highest honors in English and was awarded the eighth grade Outstanding English Student Award at the Middle School graduation ceremony. She also maintained her 4.0 GPA all four quarters of 8th grade which earned her the Presidential Award for a perfect 4.0 average for her 6th, 7th, and 8th grade years. She excelled in her foreign language studies and was awarded a Certificat d’honneur in the 2009 FLES Grand Concours—a national test sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). She also earned a spot on the Tableau d’honneur by achieving 8th rank at the national level, and finally, she competed at the Kentucky World Language State Conference and placed in the following categories for French: 1st place listening, 1st place reading, and 2nd place writing. In addition to visiting with their former classmates and enjoying yearbooks, alums were invited to video tape their favorite memory or share it in writing—all of which is likely to be included in a book or video for the 100th anniversary of the school. To set the mood for the sharing of “tall tales” by the alums, the Multipurpose building was transformed into a cowboy ranch complete with a full-size horse, saddles, hay bales, and even a covered wagon. Special entertainment for the event was provided by alumna, Jennifer (Pedley) West ‘66, who is one of the finest caricature artists in the nation and is frequently hired by the Hollywood jet-set for their parties and major studio events. Also, thanks to teacher and alum Denise (Yocum) Wreede *’66, the famous Magic Castle magician, Pop Haydn, was on hand to entertain the crowd with his slight-of-hand magic tricks. Many alums brought their family members, and some even came from out of state to participate in the festivities. Overall, the event was great fun and provided the school with an important treasure-trove of memories from the good ol’ days of Clairbourn School. A community of educators, families, students, friends and all who make up this wonderful educational institution. The Board of Trustees is grateful for all the good that has been evidenced this past year by each member of this community. The teachers and staff have guided each step of the learning process for every student and the Clairbourn Families Association has worked tirelessly in supporting our school’s many activities. Gratitude is due to each individual friend of the school who supported these efforts with loving contributions. Our Head of School, Dr. Robert W. Nafie, has just completed thirty years at the helm, guiding our school through three decades of progress and growth. Thank you, Dr. Nafie, for your on-going leadership and dedication. During this past year, Clairbourn underwent an extensive accreditation process in accordance with the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and received a full and resounding renewal of our accreditation for the full six-year term. Much work and effort went into this process by each member of our extended community and note was taken of this dedication by the visiting accreditation team members. We all can take pride in the educational excellence of Clairbourn School! As a new year dawns, the Clairbourn Board of Trustees looks forward to another year of our community efforts to educate our students to become fine and upstanding citizens of the future. I t is with sincere gratitude that I share with you the Clairbourn Annual Report. Amid the recent economic uncertainty, the generous giving by our Clairbourn support community has been truly inspiring. We met and even exceeded our fundraising goals for the year. These goals, carefully set, are designed to maintain our exemplary academic program, while at the same time, to provide for the educational innovation we have come to expect of our school. Happily, thanks to you, this has continued. In every area of operations including faculty, finances, facilities, student achievement and activities, governance, and the parent community we have seen the continued growth of our school. Thank you for your part in this important work. A little over a month ago, we launched another graduating class toward their new high school adventures. We are very proud of the record of achievement of the Class of 2009, and we have heard such wonderful reports from all the others. Members of the Class of 2005 were on-hand for our Awards Assembly, and I was thrilled to hear of their many achievements, and the impressive list of colleges and universities they will be attending. I hope you enjoy reading our Annual Report and that you celebrate with us another year of progress—our 83rd. The Clairbourn community had so many milestones in 2008-2009 to celebrate—and I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to our faithful and tireless parent volunteers who shared from the heart and brought the Clairbourn Families Association to life. The year began with current Clairbourn families extending a warm welcome to new families through the Host Family Program. Everyone was soon back on campus with our back-toschool pool parties and play dates—a wonderful chance for our children to reconnect and make new friends. Our annual Coffees on the Quad provided an opportunity for parents to catch up after the summer break. I am so grateful to our parents who signed up for Special Lunch Days, served as room parents, faithfully supported our SCRIP Program, attended our monthly meetings, participated in our many events and staffed and supported Cougar Corner. Our fall activities began with a fantastic Halloween Fun Fair, which was the perfect kick-off to our successful weeklong “Elect to Read” book fair. Our Clairbourn Library continues to prosper under the leadership of Librarian Anita Knight and the thoughtful generosity of our families. In November, perfect weather and a wonderful time was enjoyed by all at our annual Cougar Classic Golf Tournament at Brookside. Then in December, we enjoyed one another’s company while wrapping keepsake ornaments for our children at the Sugar Plum Breakfast, and the true spirit of the holiday season was wonderfully evident in the overwhelming support of our Holiday Giving Program for the Foothill Unity Center. With the new year, our monthly meetings continued with thoughtful speakers and delicious treats—and we quickly began working on a fabulous evening of glamour and intrigue at Clairbourn’s Bond Benefit. What a successful celebration of our community! After Bond, we ventured Under the Sea for Clairbourn’s Spring Carnival—an amazing finale to a busy and productive year! Our CFA Board brought fun and creative spins on traditional activities with our uniform sidewalk sales, unique class benefit projects, and a photo directory of the board in back of the roster…to name a few. Everyone volunteered with enthusiasm and dedication. All of this hard work resulted in wonderful memories, new friendships, and an amazing contribution to our school of over $212,000! It was truly an honor to serve the Clairbourn community and a privilege to partner with Clairbourn’s dedicated parents, the CFA Board, Dr. Nafie, and Clairbourn’s outstanding trustee board, faculty, and administrative staff. Thank you for the wonderful memories and friendships that I will cherish. Warmly, Anna Merritt 2008-09 Clairbourn Families Association President 58 ANNUAL REPORT 2008 ~ 2009 CFA BOARD & MEMBERS :CFA CFA President Anna Merritt presented Dr. Nafie with a check from the CFA.
