Volition™ Network Solutions include a unique fibre
cabling system providing “freedom of choice” in
the design and optimisation of the overall network
architecture.
It also includes a state of the art voice and data
copper cabling system, including a Category 6
offering and giving “significant channel performance headroom” over existing standards and helping
a broad range of customers to migrate to high bandwidth.
A variety of easy to install and innovative connectivity solutions insuring high performance, and reliable
systems form part of the offer. The revolutionary
VF-45™ small form factor fibre connector has
helped in reducing the complexity of fibre networking, while the 3M™ RJ45 copper products offer
simple termination solutions – jacks snap on without
tools – with built-in reliability features and component performance exceeding existing standards.

Volition™ RJ45 K6 Jacks
Description
RJ45 K6 Jack
Our new Category 6 Jack has keystone mounting format. With its
compact size, integral shutter, and tool less termination, the K6
Jack from 3M ensures smart, reliable and quick installation. All 8
copper conductors are effortlessly terminated in one simple operation resulting in reliable interconnection in record time. If a wiring
mistake is made you can re-use your K6 Jack several times.

• Choice of cable insertion orientation either from the
top or bottom for enhanced cable bend radius control
Three formats are offered to ensure electromagnetic compatibility:
UTP, FTP (with drain wire), and STP with 360° braid or foil connection. Cable entry can be made from either the top or bottom of the
Jack providing flexibility during installation. A wide range of face
plates and patch panels is available in the K6 range which utilise
the advantages of the K6 Jack.

Description
RJ45 K5e Jack
Our new Category 5e Jack has keystone mounting format. With its
compact size, integral shutter, and tool less termination, the K5e
Jack from 3M ensures smart, reliable and quick installation. All 8

finish the presentation to give a smart and functional appearance.

Description
RJ45 Patch Panels
Ergonomically designed, the RJ45 patch panels can be easily
mounted in rack frames, wall boxes or cabinets with a 19” format.
Highlights
The shielded version of the RJ45 patch panels supports cables of
all common diameters and provides effective protection against
electromagnetic interference due to 360° contact of the cable
braids on a single earth plane.

for cable retention and proper guiding of cables to point of termination.
Bended edges provide an aesthetic appearance and improved mechanical
strength.

Description
Horizontal Cables - Overview
A complete range of cables which offer superior electrical performance. Available in both Category 5e and 6, the 100Ω cables can
be used to obtain a Class D link (Cat 5e) or Class E link (Cat 6)
(ISO/IEC 11801, EN50173 or TIA/EIA-568) with different degrees of
protection (UTP, FTP, STP, FFTP).

The 100Ω cables are recommended for high speed data transmission within local computer networks (LAN), horizontal cabling

Description
Indoor / Outdoor Cable
The Volition Indoor / Outdoor fibre
optic cable includes both horizontal
and backbone cable with either
50/125µm, 62.5/125µm multimode
or 9/125µm singlemode fibre.
Highlights
• Cable construction fully dielectric for immunity against
lighting
• All tubes containing fibres are gel filled for protection
against water
The primary application of the
cable is for both indoor and outdoor installations into cable trays
or ducts as primary and secondary
cabling in LAN’s. All cable sheaths
are LSZH (low smoke zero halogen)
rated to fulfill the safety requirements for internal cabling. All cable variants have good resistance
to water. The cable core is water resistant which is acheived by
a combination of an expanding tape and gel filled tubes allowing
for all cables to be installed in areas where water within ducts is a
possibility.
• The cable core is protected against water ingress by an
expanding tape.
• UV stabilised sheath makes the cable suitable for external
use
• Fibres are colour coded for fast installation and
organisation
• Operational temperature for 2 to 24 fibre cables:
-30°C to 60°C; max attenuation variation is 0.5 dB/km
(up to the max specified value - Aramid yarn only)
Each category of Volition Indoor / Outdoor cable is available in fibre
counts ranging from 2 to 144 fibres.
• Operational temperature for 48 to 144 fibre cables:
-40°C to 60°C; max attenuation variation is 0.1 dB/km
(up to the max specified value)

2.2 Assembly Systems
2.2.1 3M™ Hot Melt
Description
3M™ Hot Melt optical fibre connector assembly system
3M Hot Melt Connectors have a proven record of high performance and ease of use in local area networks around the world. They
allow cost effective production of fibre optic patch cords or pigtails
in just a few minutes in either a field or factory environment, as well
as direct terminations of backbone or horizontal cable.
The plugs are factory pre-filled with a special Hot Melt adhesive
which ensures, in combination with an oven, a fast and reliable
assembly solution.
All connector types are equipped with high-precision ceramic ferrules. Different boot colours are available to guarantee identifiable
channel separation.
One kit provides everything needed to terminate ST, FC, and SC
connectors for both singlemode and multimode applications.

2.2.2 Crimplok™
Description
The Crimplok™ connector combines the speed of non-adhesive
connectors with the performance characteristics of epoxy and Hot
Melt connectors. Crimplok™ Connectors are the ideal solution for
emergency restoration work or for quickly making fibre connections
at the desk.
Crimplok connectors were designed to:
• Save time in installation
• Provide rugged, reliable performance, meeting or exceeding
current EIA/TIA 568, ISO 11801 and EN 50173 specifications.
• Install cleanly and simply with fewer parts and tools.
ST Connector
Available in both SC and ST, single mode and multimode connector versions, Crimplok connectors are faster to install than epoxy
connectors since there is no set-up or curing time. Crimplok connectors do not require special heating tools or ovens, so time
spent searching for electrical outlets is eliminated. Polishing the
connector is also a simple process that can be performed in seconds.

The Crimplok connector incorporates proven 3M malleable metal
element fibre gripping technology. There is no fibre splice or second joint inside the connector, so there is no added attenuation
at the connection. When the conformable metal element closes, it
grips a length of the fibre, eliminating fibre movement associated
with other crimp-style connectors. The strength of the metallic element ensures that Crimplok connectors meet industry standards
for temperature and humidity.

2.2.3 Fibrlok™
Description
Fibrlok is a universal mechanical splice, which can be used wherever quick and secure splice connections are required.
Highlights
Fibrlok Universal splice consists of a highly resistant plastic base,
body, and lid, in which a metallic element provides the connection.
The metal element surrounds the optical fibres to be connected
aligning the fibres precisely and permanently in place.
• Fibrlok™ is a universal splice for both 250 to 900 µm
coated fibres
• The same splice is used for either singlemode or
multimode fibres
The universal splice utilises a single cleave length for both 250 and
900µm coated fibres and has the ability to compensate for variations in fibre outer diameters for improved splicing yield.
• Identical stripping lengths are used for 250/900 µm fibres
• Repositioning of fibres is possible
The Fibrlok Universal splice can be used with multimode and singlemode fibres with 125 µm diameter and coatings of 250 to 900
µm.

The following diagram illustrates the distribution of results from
measuring the insertion loss on 550 Fibrlok™ universal connectors
(equal optical fibres, coating: 250 µm).
Mean insertion loss: 0.07 dB.
To make the connection, the prepared fibre ends are inserted into
the connector. Using the assembly tool, the connector lid is closed,
and the metal element positions the fibres accurately together.
