2012 Ipswich Festival activities dominate the April calendar.
The week commencing 10 April, the 2012 Festival Programme and four page brochures
will be distributed to Ipswich Central traders. Visit www.ipswichfestival.com.au to view
each day’s activities.
The Ipswich Festival 2012 is designed to inspire, entertain, create and explore.
Beginning with Apprenticeships Qld Fire on the River which lights up the city on 26 April
right through to Orion Springfield/Suncorp Bank Kid’s Kingdom on 6th May, there will
be something to delight visitors and the people of Ipswich every day.
Special Sendai visit
On March 21, a group of students from Sendai Shirayuri Gakuen Primary School visited
Ipswich City Council to express their gratitude to the people of Ipswich for their support
and generosity. The students were each presented with an Ipswich gift bag including a
toy koala, which were a highlight for the students who happily posed with the furry
creatures.












When Ipswich was hit by the flood last year we experienced a whole gamut of emotions
– despair, pain, heartache, thankfulness and hope. Just months later, on March 11,
parts of Japan were left devastated by an earthquake registering 9+ on the Richter Scale
followed by a tsunami. Knowing what we did having just started to get back on our feet
after the flood, the Ipswich community rallied to help those in need. USQ and the Love
and Grace Welfare Aid Foundation brought joy to the hearts of more than a 1000
affected youths when they raised funds, purchased materials and sewed ‘hope bears’ to
carry messages of goodwill.
Ipswich Central showed its support for Sendai by coordinating Ipswich primary schools
in a colouring-in project delivering messages of hope to the young Japanese students
who were living in emergency shelters. The colouring-in project also marked Children’s
Day in Japan and the messages were delivered and distributed thanks to Ipswich City
Council and the city’s sister city Nerima.
Students from St Peter Claver College formed a Sendai peoplescape in kanji characters
with the first symbol representing Sendai and the second was a heart. College students
also raised money to send to Sendai. Meanwhile, students from Kruger State School,
Claremont Special School and Goodna Special School participated in a Children’s Day
project. These are just some of the schools who are also supporting the Shop Ipswich
campaign with their participation in the current Ipswich Central Resources4Courses
programme and we extend our appreciation for their efforts.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
The city is on the cusp of a once-in-a-generation change for the better.
Change is the key word here. It is an essential part of evolution. For the
city to move forward and achieve all that we envisage, change is
essential.
It is very rare for a city to get an opportunity to shape its future in such
a dramatic fashion. Extensive research has been done, taking the best
from shopping precincts across the world, to ensure we get this
redevelopment right.
We have a tremendous opportunity to build a world-class city centre
and this revitalisation project will only further enhance our already
strong reputation as a major city for business and investment. This is
our chance to shine.
Proof of the transformation is already visible. Just look to the corner of Bell and Brisbane streets where
stage one ICON Ipswich is under construction. The nine-storey office tower is already leased to the State
Government, and is the first five-star green-star building in the city. The tower will provide office space
with retail outlets on the lower levels.
Further stages, which will be announced in the near future, will ultimately deliver additional commercial
towers, residential living, a 60,000 sqm shopping complex with a cinema and library facility, as well as
car parking.
This landmark project will span four city blocks and deliver about 170,000 sqm of master-planned
commercial, retail, residential and public space to create a “new generation” city centre.
This is the most significant development since Ipswich City Council took control of the future of the
Ipswich City Square through Ipswich City Properties.
I am excited at the possibilities and opportunities opening up for our city, none of which would have
been possible without hard work and the strong sense of pride and community spirit Ipswich is known
for.

The Ipswich CBD is really starting to reveal itself and excite people. There is a
strong sense of optimism emanating from the traders and the community.
The city is developing an insatiable appetite for all the heritage precinct has
to offer. With its quirky boutiques and large number of cafes and restaurants,
it’s no wonder people are excited.
Food is most definitely on the menu in the Top of Town and the Ipswich Mall
precincts.
The pub formerly known as the Settlers Inn is about to open soon with a new
moniker – a name picked by the community after restaurateur Raj Sharma
made it a competition to find a name befitting of the tapas and lounge bar. Raj also owns Indian Mehfil which
was honoured recently to host Indian international cricket stars Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina.
The cricketing trio were bowled over by the local restaurant’s cuisine.
Organic café fourthchild has more than doubled in size and is proving more popular than ever. The café has
developed a strong reputation for tasty, organic meals, amazing desserts and a great atmosphere.
And a chocolate shop ‘The Chocolaterie’ has opened in Ellenborough Street just in time for a choc-o-holic’s
favourite time of the year.
If we’re talking food, then we can’t ignore the wonderful work done at the Ipswich Ministry of Food. In the year
since the centre opened, more than 1000 families have learnt cooking skills and how to prepare healthy meals
for the whole family. The feedback from participants has been incredible too. I heard a story of one woman who
moved to the Hervey Bay area and would travel to Ipswich every week so she didn’t miss her cooking class.
The centre is the brainchild of UK celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who is on a quest to reignite interest in cooking
and help families make healthy food choices. Ipswich was lucky enough to have Jamie visit in early March.
Twenty people where selected to cook with Jamie while a crowd of nearly 500 watched the live cooking
demonstration in d’Arcy Doyle Place.
Ipswich is developing a name for itself as a foodie heaven. Let’s hope more people develop a taste for Ipswich
and all it has to offer. Happy trading.

There are plenty of reasons for Ipswich to celebrate – the annual festival
is just one.
This is a great time of the year for Ipswich. It is a time when the city, in
particular the city heart, comes alive with a long list of free or low-cost
events.
The increased traffic within the Ipswich Central shopping precincts is
also a boon for retailers.
There has already been an increase in traffic on Saturday mornings as
people participate in the Tales of Discarded Treasures workshops.
As they say, one man’s trash is another’s treasure.
The street parade will be complemented by the annual Top of Town street party and the inaugural Ipswich
Busk-Off. This last event will bring even more fun to the CBD area as buskers from far and wide try to outdo
each other’s antics and attract more audience attention than the previous.
This Busk-Off is very similar to the World Buskers Festival which is held every year in Christchurch. It is a world
renowned event with people and performers travelling across the globe to be a part of it. If you ever get a
chance to see it, please do.
The streets of Christchurch come alive during the busking festival, and that’s exactly what the Ipswich Festival
and the Busk-Off can do for our great city.
I encourage all residents and traders to get involved in the 2012 Ipswich Festival. Show your Ipswich spirit and
pride.

Tales of Discarded Treasure—Volunteers needed!
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity that engages with the Ipswich
community? Join our puppeteer troupe - no experience needed!
As a volunteer puppeteer, you will be an integral part of a troupe of
individuals committed to the delivery of our Festival Tales of
Discarded Treasure Street Parade.
Discover the joy of animating the amazing giant puppet characters for eager
young audiences.
Requirements include upper body strength and a love for performing. There is a
fair amount of physical exertion required so strong arms and knees are a definite
advantage. You provide the enthusiasm!

Busy hub gains a new home and profile
When Busy Beat relocated to the new premises in Ipswich City Mall, the café and community hub gained a
bright new profile and new leadership under Roslyn Englund. Roslyn, an original Ipswich resident with a solid
background in traineeships and apprenticeship programs, now assumes the dual role of Employment Consultant
and Hub Co-ordinator.
Since Busy Beat’s relaunch on 21 March all systems have been on the go, with the café providing training for up
to 5 school-based students, additional placements for high school work experience students, and anyone wishing
to develop hospitality and catering skills to support their transition to employment.
The hub facilities are also available for community and business group meetings — with food, coffee and drinks
right at hand.

Nicki McKay, a Multi-Media and Design graduate of Griffith
University and Queensland College of Art, opened her
Green Label Design studio in Bostock Chambers in Brisbane Street, Top of Town, in January.
Nicki and her team specialise in the design and development of state-of-the-art W3C -compliant, search
engine-friendly and user-friendly websites. Application-based development and traditional graphic
design services can also be provided.
Green Label’s designs are front-and-centre of some standout websites of businesses and organisations
based in Melbourne, Geelong, Gladstone and Brisbane.
Green Label is aptly named, as Nicki explained: “We have an eco bent, aim to be carbon neutral, use
100% green power, and like to work with people who have the same ethics.”
Green Label’s business is virtually exclusively derived from word-of-mouth recommendations. “We
collaborate with a lot of graphic designers too, (which converts to) a lot of web development work.”

Dreamed-of expansion a sudden reality
When Amanda Robertson opened the popular Top of Town café fourthchild nine months ago, she
dreamed of expanding into the next-door premises, which was occupied by Ray White Real Estate.
Last year’s pre-opening renovation had revealed a splendid pressed metal ceiling and atrium, only half
of which was on fourthchild’s side of the wall partition with Ray White. There was no choice but to
conceal the atrium with a false ceiling and hope that the shop next door would become available one
day.
With Ray White’s departure in February, Amanda suddenly had to bring plans forward in no uncertain
terms. The result is a resounding success: the unique ceiling and atrium are revealed in their original
glory, seating and service areas are doubled, and patronage has followed accordingly. If this is any
precedent, the planned full liquor licence and dinner service might also become realities sooner than
later.

Boutique Bus Tours Showcase Shopping and Food Experiences
Selected retail stores and eateries in and around Ipswich Central and the Top of Town are on the radar
with the reintroduction of Boutique Bus Tours.
When introduced last year, the tours were a great hit with locals and visitors who enjoyed the broad
showcase of specialty stores ranging from homewares through fashion, gift and specialty shops. The
tours also embrace the ‘foodie’ element, taking in the wide choice of cafés and restaurants that appeal
to all tastes.
Half-day and full-day tours are provided, departing from Riverheart at 9 am. Patrons who live within a
10 km radius of Riverheart can be collected from and returned to their residence.
The Morning Tea tour terminates at 1 pm, while the full-day tour, which includes morning tea and
lunch, returns to Riverheart by 3 pm.
Initially planned as a monthly event, the tours can be individually designed and arranged on demand,
say for special-interest groups or a unique fund-raiser.
The Mothers Day-themed Boutique Bus Tour hosted by Amanda Taylor will depart from Riverheart at
9am on Tuesday 24 April.

The "Prom" concert is back for 2012. Last years first ever "Prom" in Ipswich was both beautiful and fun. It was also stirring
combining "Pomp and Circumstance" with Johann Strauss Waltzes, "Waltzing Matilda" and 1812 Overture.
This year, those "Grande Gendarmes" gentlemen return with greater fun in two segments. The girls are back to transport
everyone away in song, and the Orchestra is set to really wow everyone.
The traditional part of the Prom, involves singing national songs, while waving the relevant flags, just like Albert Hall in
London for the past 102 years. We aim to fill the Civic Centre with people, flags and singing.
