hen I asked Matt for his last name, he replied “Tango
Echo Lima Foxtrot Sierra Echo Romeo”. (That’s
“Telfser” for the layperson.) Such was my first indication that
Naval Communicators are a special breed.
“I’m like the messenger of old who rides the horse and delivers the message, except slightly more modern,” says Matt
by way of explaining the duties of a Nav Comm, as they are
commonly called at sea. He is responsible for all things concerning communication in the Navy, principally involving radio and satellite. But Matt also provides IT help on the ship —
a broad array of skills, to be sure.
“The Navy trains us in all of it,” says Matt. The bulk of his
training came from the Canadian Forces Fleet School in Esquimalt. He was surprised to find seemingly antiquated skills
like Morse code and flag signalling on the docket. “We have
radios that are older than the sun,” quips Matt, adding in a
more genuine tone: “If the satellites get shot out of the sky,
then we can communicate by high-frequency radios or, if it
comes to it, by hoisting up flags on a halyard.”
Matt became a communicator for the Navy seven years ago
after deciding The Royal Military College of Canada was not
his thing. His aptitude tests indicated he was a skilled communicator, and since he’d always been told he had a good
voice for radio, opted to try out Naval Communications. “This
way, rather than getting stuck down below with the engines,
I’m on the bridge with the captain and get to see all the action,” says Matt.
But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s all guns and glory.
There’s a lot of waiting. And that’s where the greatest challenge lies, according to Matt. “At times you are so busy you
cannot keep up, and at other times, there is so little to do,
you are ready to jump overboard,” he confesses. “It’s hard to
keep yourself calm when you’re always wanting things to
slow down or speed up.”
In order to maintain his sanity, Matt plays cards, tests himself at trivia and converses with fellow sailors. Surrounded by
the same people, day in and day out, can be perceived like a

prison sentence or an opportunity. Matt does his best to better himself by chatting up the veteran sailors. “Some of these
guys have sailed their entire lives,” he says. “They know

more than you could ever want to learn about the ship. They
are mountains of knowledge, if you can convince them to
teach you.”
In a few months, Matt will have all the time in the world to
mine the on-board resources. He recently got posted to a ship
for his first tour — destination unknown. Chances are good he
will be deployed to South America, where the Navy intervenes in drug trafficking missions, or the Middle East, where
he will be called upon to keep the peace. He’s counting on
the daily rhythm of regular shifts to get him through. That,
and regular communication... from his girlfriend.

Thomas Edison all have in common? They (along with
countless others) were all fired from a job. Being fired can
have a profound emotional and financial impact. The resulting shock, sometimes combined with embarrassment and
guilt, can affect a person for months or even years — for
those who chose to let the firing define them, that is. For
others, being fired can be a motivator that spurs personal
and professional growth and often, in time, an improved situation.
“Fired, Tales of the Canned, Canceled, Downsized, & Dismissed” is a collection of humorous stories from comedians,
