A current pulsates along one or more wires which are insulated
from the ground and as soon as an animal comes into
contact with the wire, the circuit is closed and the animal
receives an unpleasant (but harmless) shock. As the circuit
closes, the electric current flows through the animal, into the
soil then via the earth-stakes back to the energiser until the
animal backs away.
It is very important to keep the fence wire or tape free of all
vegetation otherwise the power impulse will leak into the ground
and the fence will be less effective. Plastic insulators are also
used to prevent the power impulses leaking to earth. Note that it
is not obligatory for a fence wire to complete a loop.

Installation Guide
Electric fencing is the most economical way to enclose your
animals and keep pests and predators out. Electric fencing is
harmless, easy to install and is likely to last much longer than
ordinary fencing. With less strain being put on the fence itself
due to the animals avoiding it after experiencing their first
shock, the life expectancy of the fence is preserved.

Netting
Earthing
The importance of earthing
and earth stakes
Electric Sheep
Netting - 50m
Nature shows us how to do it: a tree spreads its roots to absorb
water and nutrients from the soil. Earthing works in the same way;
on contact by the animal, power flows through the animal’s body
into the ground. There, earthing rods absorb the power (like the
root water) and lead back to the electric fence energiser where
the circuit is completed.
Good quality sheep net
90cm / 36 inches high
length 50m. Easy to erect,
includes integral plastic
posts with metal spike.
9 horizontal strands, 8
electrified plus bottom
strand.Vertical spacing from
top strand to bottom strand
(in cm’s) 15,13,13,9,9,9,9
& 13. Moulded net joints
for security. Each electrified
strand has 3 conductors of
0.2mm stainless steel.
Please note that for sheep
nets, a minimum of 3500
volts is advised. Suitable
for 12 volt and mains
energisers.
If the earthing is poor, power will not flow back into the electric
fence. The circuit will not be complete and consequently
the fence system will not function or its performance will be
significantly impaired.
When focusing on earth stakes, it is likely that additional stakes
will be required as the energiser’s own earth stake is only for the
shortest of runs. Large systems could require up to three earth
rods spread 3m apart from each other.
It is also worth bearing in mind that during the summer months
when soil dries out, its ability to conduct reduces and so earthing
becomes even more important.

The Ultimate Tape and Rope have been designed
to be exactly that – Ultimate. Both products use
the exclusive TriCOND technology as conductive
filaments. Traditional high quality conductors use
a mixture of steel and copper wires. The copper
component dramatically improves conductivity

quality with 9 strands of 0.2mm and

but its durability is its downfall. What often
happens is that after a few months in the field
or paddock the copper filaments snap leaving
only the less conductive steel wires. TriCOND is
a triple galvanised steel wire that has five times
the conductivity of plain steel but retains all of its
durability.

Ultimate Rope 6mm x 200m
Each plastic filament is thicker
than normal with an exceptionally
dense weave; in addition the two
outer edges further reinforced
with a 1mm outer filament.
Couple this robust plastic set
up with 10 x 0.4mm TriCOND
conductors and the result is a
product with a breaking strain of
350kg with a resistance of
0.09 Ω/M. It will prove to be a truly
hardy tape. UV stable.
Thicker than normal polyethylene
filaments and 6 x 0.4mm

make an extremely high quality

strain of 400kg and a resistance
of 0.15O Ω/M. A very good,
durable rope. UV stable.

Considerations
Other areas to consider when
erecting an electric fence:
• Cut out switches
• Gateways
• Earth stakes – are additional
stakes required?
There are various solutions for gateways from the simple
gate handle to the Mole Valley Farmers bungee gate
system. Underground cables can be used so that the
fence beyond the gate remains live when the gate is
open.
• Mains fencers
Leadout cable should be used to connect a mains
fencer to the fence and earth rods.
Can be useful when the energiser is a long way from the
fence and fence access is frequently required eg
poultry nets.
• Use tape / rope connectors
to avoid knots

ideas
• Fence tester

1) Does my fence line have to make a loop
to work?
No, the animal completes the loop/circuit when it touches
the fence. For example, strip grazing fences have a dead
end but still work perfectly well.
2) My fence does not seem to give much of
a kick
To be an effective deterrent an electric fence should
have a minimum of 3000 volts at any point along its
length. Testers are available to give accurate readings.
Remember, an animal has bare feet, possibly standing in
damp grass and may touch the fence with its wet nose,
a very different experience from you touching it whilst
insulated by your wellington boots!
3) Are more powerful energisers better than
smaller ones?
The more powerful an energiser the more power it will
consume therefore costing more to run. However an
energiser with some power to spare could be useful if in the
future you wish to erect more fencing. See energiser details
for guidelines.
4) Grass/vegetation is touching my fence, is
this ok?
No, anything touching your fence will “leak” power making
your fence less efficient; this can be grass, weeds, wooden
posts, barbed wire, etc. It pays to maintain your fence.
5) Why do energisers power a long length of
wire but a much shorter length of netting?
Netting is power hungry as each vertical and horizontal line
(except the bottom line) has multiple wires, if you added
these multiple wires together the end result would be a very
long single line fence. As a rule, a battery energiser needs
to be 12 volt for nets.
6) How many posts do I need?
The minimum is one every ten metres. After the initial
contact electric fencing relies on being a psychological
barrier rather than a physical barrier. A great advantage
of a permanent electric fence is that it requires much
less material than a traditional stock fence and if properly
maintained will give years of service. For electric fencing,
wooden posts are often used for corners and ends to
give greater stability with plastic posts as intermediates
for temporary instalment. Insulators must be used on
wooden posts.

The bungee gate system can stretch to a maximum of 6.2m
without damage or loss of conductivity or danger to livestock.
When installed correctly, as in the picture, you have the
following benefits;
• The gate can be opened with the energiser switched on and
current flowing.
• The gate handle or bungee rope will not drop to the ground
and short the fence out.
• Prevention of a tripping hazard to both the user and livestock.
• Unlike conventional spring gates, tail hair is less likely to
become entangled.

7) Which are best, mains or battery energisers?
A battery is great for temporary systems giving good
flexibility when the energiser is situated outside. Mains are
ideal for permanent installations however, due to being
connected to mains supply, they must be housed inside
and use a suitable lead-out cable to take power to the
fence. Mains units must be housed, they are not supplied
with leads, a lead-out cable will be required.
8) In dry weather my fence does not seem as
effective, why is this?
Prolonged dry weather results in drier soil; the drier the
soil, the less efficient it is at conducting electricity. In this
situation increase the number and depth of the earth
stakes used, this will help counter the lower conductivity of
the soil.

FAQ’s & useful information
Tape and Wire / Rope Connectors
Heavy Duty Posts
It is easy to use a knot to attach conductors (wire or rope) to gate
handles. However this can physically damage the conductor and usually
makes a poor connection resulting in lost performance of the fence.
Our Premium Tape and Rope / Wire Connectors clamp the conductor,
creating a perfect connection and clip neatly to the gate handle. In
fact, wherever on your fence there is a temptation to tie a knot in your
conductor it is wise to use one of our purpose built connectors. Apart from
gate handles another common need is on the fence side of the gate
(see image above). Connectors used at this point will, again, improve
fence performance.
Spike and foot treading have a metal insert to give
strength where it is most needed, helping to prolong
the service life of the post. High level UV protection,
computer aided design ensures robust structure.
Made from PP copolymer the posts are impact
resistant even at low temperatures. 3 year warranty.
Available in 110cm or 157cm post. 5 pack.
