A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Hello Friends,
We have probably all heard that expression, “The kids are off
to summer camp!” There are certainly many young people off to
a variety of summer camp experiences within the San Francisco
Recreation and Parks Department this season and Sharon Art
Studio will once again be host for the annual Art in the Park
program, also our annual Jr. Picasso Summer Camp, which is
administered through FOSAS (Friends of the Sharon Art Studio).
However, the definition of “camp” is not limited to youthful
activities. Children of all ages, including the “young at heart”
are also in the queue for a creative experience at our studio.
Our summer session programming at Sharon Art Studio once
again continues to foster educational and artistic growth through
a wide range of course and workshop offerings. We have some
new Fine Art classes that explore the beauty of trees and the
human figure and a new glass fusing class.
This summer will bring about the start of the 25th fiscal year
for FOSAS and we plan to have some commemorative efforts
during the upcoming 2016-17 year to help celebrate the
accomplishments, successes and impact of FOSAS on the studio’s
community and how the partnership between FOSAS and San
Francisco Recreation and Parks Department has flourished for
nearly a quarter of a century. We will be planning an ice cream
social for late summer and will have future events. Stay tuned
for information through a variety of outlets, including our cyber
newsletters. More timely, stay focused as we all “go off to camp”
with unique personal goals. Now where did I leave my compass
and backpack?

Sharon Art Studio is run under the auspices of the San Francisco Recreation and

SUMMER 2016
STUDIO HAPPENINGS
There have been many positive changes at Sharon Art Studio throughout
2015, and with the Town Hall meeting that was held in January, the
studio is buzzing with ideas on how to continue to support and explore
new ways to make the program blossom, while forming new community
partnerships and planning upcoming fundraisers and socials!
The staff and volunteers who worked at the recent November’s Silent
Auction, Winter Studio Sale, and the most recent events: the Drink and
Draw fundraiser at Kezar Pizzetta, and the Retired Teachers Sale had
a blast seeing both new and familiar faces learning about what makes
the Sharon Art Studio so special.
If you missed any of the recent events, don’t worry, more special events
are in the works! Stay updated on social media or via the Sharon Art
Studio website for news on upcoming events.
If you aren’t yet on the Sharon Art Studio e-news mailing list, and
would like to receive registration reminders, event invites, and special
updates, make sure to subscribe @sharonartstudio.org!

HOW DO YOU BRAINSTORM?
A question that came up recently at the Sharon
Art Studio revolved around how one is inspired
for a new art project, specifically: “How do you
brainstorm?”
This question sparked a conversation where we
shared our various methods of brainstorming!
Many of us learned various brainstorm
techniques in school or have come up with our
own over the years.
So, how do YOU brainstorm? Here are some
answers that various staff and students gave
when asked this question.
“I used to brainstorm by making lists but I’ve recently starting making
mind maps and I think they work well for brainstorming ideas. I draw or
write a main idea in the center of a large piece of paper and then draw
lines extending out, like tree branches. From there I write words or doodle
images that I associate with the main idea. I keep it in my sketchbook so
I can add to it when an idea or memory pops up. I think using color is
stimulating too. “
–Jeannie Ichimura, Instructor

SUMMER 2016
HOW DO YOU BRAINSTORM?
“I like to make a list of words….anything that comes to mind without inhibiting myself. Afterwards, I circle the words that speak to me the most.
Then, I do a quick sketch based on how those words make me feel. It’s
surprising how often the words help me search for what I need/want to
express for my current or next project.”
–Anonymous, Student
“Sometimes I sit in front of a blank canvas and feel completely overwhelmed.
When that happens, I try not to be too hard on myself. Chuck Close says
inspiration is for amateurs--the rest of us just show up to work. And I think
that’s partly true. But I also know that if I’m not in the mood to paint or if I’m
forcing an idea, it’s never going to work out. So to brainstorm, I do what I call
“taking myself out for a date.” I go alone for a walk, with no agenda. I let
whatever inspires me dictate the day. I’ll bring a sketchbook and sometimes I
end up at a museum, sometimes a garden or a cafe or bookstore. I draw the
things I find interesting without judgement or thought of how it will work into a
painting or a series--it’s a mindless exercise that becomes fruitful provided I
don’t expect it to be.
I also find making collages helps me to work through ideas without too much
invested and that lack of investment allows me to play more without major
consequences. Turning on a show, having a glass of wine, and cutting up
magazines is a delightful way to brainstorm and come up with new ideas
that inspire me. We have to remember as artists that we are allowed to play
sometimes and that play may or may not end up in something interesting-but in my experience, it always ends up being a positive experience, often
sparking an idea that becomes fully developed later.”
