Who qualified for the State Fair??
Ryan McDonald, 2008 City Men's Champion with Tom Hamolka, tournament Director for 2008
Golf Council Institutes new incentive . .
The Golf Council will award FREE entry into the State Fair Handicap Championship (Aug 30,31, Sept 1) to the
Champion of the City Men's Handicap (June 7,8) and the County Men's Handicap (July 19-20). The player will

at her caddy after the putt, knowing she missed a great opportunity. On the
18th tee, however, Brooke showed no signs of a let down as she piped her
drive once again 250+ yards right down the middle. Christina also hit a
good drive and they both reached the green in regulation. Brooke was the
first to putt and she had a great line, but her putt stopped just inches
short of the cup. Christina's putt was offline, but she tapped in for par and
they were off to the 17th green again for the third playoff hole. Brooke, once again proved her worth with a drive
right down the middle almost identical to the first playoff hole. Christina pulled her drive this time into the left
rough and left herself with a difficult shot under the tree line, but needing to go over the bunker. Somehow,
Christina was able to punch an eight iron that clipped a branch, clipped the lip of the bunker and curled around
the green, leaving herself a 25 foot putt. Brooke made a solid approach shot, leaving her about 20 feet short of
the hole. After studying her putt from all angles, Christina stepped up and rolled it in center cup, pumping her fist
in the air. Brooke was next to putt. She hit it firm and true, but at the last second it slid just right of the hole.
Earlier in the day, Christina had commented that she would need to shoot a 66 to have a chance, but all she
needed was a 68 to force a playoff and join local legends Elizabeth Brand, Judy Anderson and Big Break
Kaanapali star Kim Welch as the only woman to win three championships in a row.
The tournament also had many women competing in three net flights. T he President's Flight was won by Amy
Cowan, of Roseville at 147, Director's Flight by Brooke Stephens of Durham at 138, and the Council Flight by
Caitlin Yee, of Sacramento, at 132.
The tournament director, Sean Wong, would like to thank all those who helped make this a great tournament,
including his co-directors, Carissa Shubb, Gwen Seefeldt, Janis Luis, Ross Martin and Bev Dunbar of the
Sacramento Golf Council, the great staff at the Bing Maloney Golf Course and all of the participants. Great
Job!!!"

Christina Stockton Repeats win for 2008
"The 73rd Annual Sacramento City Women's
Championship was held this past weekend on June 2122, 2008 at Bing Maloney Golf Course. Some of the
past winners of this event have gone onto very successful
professional careers, including Alice Miller, who won
several LPGA tournaments, including a major. This
year's field was very strong with some of the top women
golfers in the area, including several college stars from
Northern California like Chelsea Stelzmiller, Brittany
Smith, Jessica Yam and Lauren Dobashi of UC Davis,
Brooke Green and Samantha Saffold of Sacramento
State, Hali Coppin of Fresno State, Alexis Garduno of
Old Dominion University, Alexis Edwards of BYU,
Ashlee Yee of UC Riverside, Jessica Yee of Cal State
Monterey Bay, Jennifer Jenq of Wellesley
College, Kristina Casillas of Sac City College, and Danielle Cvitanov and Christina Stockton of the University of
San Francisco. The field also consisted of some young up and coming golfers such as Jacqueline Williams of
Loretto, Daniela Okino of St. Francis and 13-year old Paige Lee, from Folsom, who made it to the regional
qualifier of next weekend's US Women's Open, as well as many past Sacramento City Women's Champions, like
1992 champion, Marsha Lutz, 2001-2002 champion, Lynne Cowan and 2005 Champion, Deb
Arbogast. Christina Stockton of USF was also the two-time defending champion going into the tournament,
having won in 2006 and 2007.
On Saturday, temperatures were very hot, reaching triple digits, and the scores were even hotter. Although Holes
#1, 11 and 17 proved disastrous for many golfers all weekend, a few girls managed to card some impressive red
numbers. For Brooke Green, the day proved that golf was a simple game with 5 birdies and 13 pars, a sizzling 68
that left her two shots ahead of Chelsea Stelzmiller at 3-under 70, 3 ahead of Jessica Yam, at 2 under 71, and 4
ahead of Alexis Edwards, at 1 under 72. Lurking behind were Danielle Cvitanov, at even par, 73, and a logjam
of ladies at 1-over par, 74, including two-time defending champion, Christina Stockton.
On Sunday, the temperatures dropped a little, but the scores were just as hot. Past champion, Lynne Cowan
proved that her first round 77 was a fluke, firing a 3-under 70 earlier in the day that included six birdies. Lynne
was the leader in the clubhouse and had to wait for a long time until the last two groups came in. While Lynne
was waiting in the clubhouse, Christina Stockton had started fast with birdies on Holes 3 and 4 to get her back
into contention while the leaders faltered on the front nine.
By the ninth hole, Brooke, Chelsea and Christina were all tied going into the back nine and the tournament turned
into an exciting three person race. After Chelsea birdied the 11th Hole, she had taken the lead, only to give it
back when she bogeyed the difficult par 5 12th hole and Christina had birdied. Brooke tied Christina
after birdieing the par-3 13th. All three players birdied 14, and Chelsea again tied Brook and Christina with a
birdie on the short par 4 15th. Brooke again took the lead briefly after birdieing 17, but just seconds later,
Christina had rolled in a 15 foot birdie putt from the back of the green on 18, just like she did to win the
tournament the previous year, Knowing the she needed a birdie, Chelsea went for broke, but it was not meant to
be as she bogeyed the hole. Brooke made a nice par on 18 to force the first playoff in over a decade
On the first playoff hole on Hole #17, Brooke won the coin toss and took
control with a 250+ yard drive just past the 100 yard marker in the middle
of the fairway. Christina pushed her drive in the right rough and had a
difficult shot with over hanging trees impeding her line of flight. Christina
punched under the trees just short of the right bunker and had a difficult
chip remaining. Brooke hit a great approach shot to twenty feet, just past
the hole. Christina hit a bad chip that went past the hole about 30 feet.
Still away, she missed the return putt and tapped in for her first bogey of
the day. Brooke only needed two putts to win, but she was strong with her
putt leaving herself about six feet for par and the win. On her par putt, she
just grazed the edge of the cup and tapped in for her bogey, Brooke smiled
at her caddy after the putt, knowing she missed a great opportunity. On the
18th tee, however, Brooke showed no signs of a let down as she piped her
drive once again 250+ yards right down the middle.
Great

Ackerman and Mark Miller. Burda also won the Sacramento

event. Burda has competed in NCGA events since 1974, and is the
only player to win an NCGA major in four different decades.
Burda is a major force at his home course, Modesto 's Del Rio CC,
winning the club championship seven times.

one over Richard Drawbert of Arbuckle, Clark shot net 67-70 to
capture first place in the first flight.

at 5-under par 139 wins the 43rd Sacramento County Men's Scratch

Hoffman Golf Course.
The course yielded only three scores under par from the entire 128
player field. Jonathan Carlson, Kelsyville and Tim Honeycutt,
Placerville tied for 2nd at 1 under par
143, only six players matched par at 144.
73rd City Women's Championship at Bing Maloney
June 21,22, 2008
Great
Job!!!"
87th City Men's Championship at Haggin Oaks
June 14,15, 2008
Saturday one hundred scratch players began the race for

Kelseyville, carded 66, to go ahead of the field by four
shots. Sunday brought out many low scores from some

Ryan McDonald won the Championship with a Sunday
score of 66, with even par 72 on Saturday.
McDonald tied with Matt Hollinsead, of Roseville at 138. Hollinsead shot 70-68 to put himself in winning
position. A sudden death playoff ensued. Both players birdied the first hole par 5, McDonald then birdied the
second hole, Hollinsead just missing the putt to tie. See final scores

73rd City Women's Championship at Bing Maloney
June 21,22, 2008
Great
Job!!!"

6th State Fair Masters Championship
Bing Maloney Golf Course
Aug 30,31, Sept. 1, 2008
The beautiful weather on Saturday with just a slight breeze led to
some very low rounds for the 63 golfers playing in the 6th
Annual California State Fair Masters Championship at Bing
Maloney Golf Course. Jamie Looper, runner-up in last year's
event, got off to a great start with a bogey free round and five
birdies for a 67.
Also lurking were several other players under par with Craig Johns of Granite Bay with a 68, Tom Scarlett of
Woodland with a 69, Michael Lee of Lincoln with a 70, Ken Crawford of Elk Grove with a 70, Lance Bishop of
Wilton with a 70, Gary Chiurazzi of Valencia with a 71 and Mike Montgomery of Roseville with a 71.
On Sunday, the winds came up just a little and quickened the greens and the scores got a little higher. A few
golfers separated themselves from the field with defending champion Ken Crawford taking control firing a 68 to
go to 6 under. Jamie Looper shot a solid 72 with an OB onto Freeport Blvd on Hole No. 4, while Mike
Montgomery followed up his 71 with a 70 to get into the final group on Monday. Jeff Hoffman, of Folsom, also
got himself into the final group with a 69, going four under on the Par 5's. Jeff also birdied the 17th hole, which
would serve him well for the next day.
Three other players managed to stay under par for the two rounds with Tom Scarlett, Mike Moreland of Rocklin
and Mike Green of Elk Grove all at one under. 1983 California State Fair Amateur winner Cliff Smith and Threetime Masters winner Brad Penfold were not far behind at even and one over.
On Monday morning, the winds were howling. It was going to be a test and Sean Wong commented that three or
four under would win the tournament. As it turned out, the combination of difficult hole locations, quick greens
and 30 mph winds with gusts to 50 mph proved very tough and only two players managed to break par for the day.
After the players battled the winds for the front nine, the leaders started to come back to the field when Ken
Crawford double bogeyed No. 10 and went to 3 under.
Suddenly, the match turned into a four person grind between Ken Crawford, Jamie Looper, Jeff Hoffman and Tom
Scarlett. Tom Scarlett went out fast and got to 3 under, but gave it back with a double bogey on No. 8. He got back
to three under with birdies on Holes 11 and 14 and nearly won the tournament with a near hole in one on 16 that
stopped short just 18 inches from the hole. Tom made the short birdie to take the lead at 4 under, but gave it back
with a bogey on No. 17.
Jamie Looper and Ken Crawford suddenly found themselves behind when they came off 17 and realized Tom had
posted a 70 as the leader in the clubhouse at 3 under. Jeff Hoffman's back nine was a roller coaster with a double
on 10, birdies on 13 and 14 and a bogey on 16, but he also was still in the hunt at 2 under going into 17. Jamie
Looper was the first to get to 3 under with a birdie at 17.
Going into 18 all three had birdie opportunities. Jeff Hoffman was the first to putt and his 25 footer from the back
of the green was true. Jamie Looper was next with a great chance to close the tournament out from 12 feet, and his
putt just slid right at the last minute and he had to settle for par. Ken Crawford was next with a tricky 10 footer.
Ken showed that he was not going to give up his title easily as he rolled it and the crowd from Valley Hi Country
Club went wild. After all the dust settled, four men stood at 3 under after 72 holes and they went to a playoff
starting on No. 17.
At this point, there
was quite a crowd of
thirty to forty people
watching the four men
walk up to the 17th
hole. In the playoff all
four men showed that
it was no fluke they were in the playoff and each of them stuck solid drives on the difficult dogleg hole. All four
men also had excellent approach shots with good birdie tries. Jamie Looper was the first to putt and he just missed
a 30 footer that grazed the hole. Tom Scarlett had a great opportunity, but his ten foot putt slid right at the last
second and he tapped in for par. Ken Crawford also had a ten foot uphill putt, but he pushed it right. Jeff Hoffman
was the last to putt with eight feet to victory. He calmly sank it and raised both arms in jubilation as the fourth
Masters champion.
Jeff, who has been a perennial contender of the State Fair Amateur tournament at Alister Mackenzie Golf Course,
stated that he enjoyed the camaraderie and relaxed atmosphere of the Masters and would definitely be back to
defend his championship next year."

[ FINAL SCORES ]
State fair golf: Blustery day can't knock Grush off course
By Steve Pajak - [email protected]
Published 12:00 am PDT Tuesday, September 2, 2008
Story appeared in SPORTS section, Page C6
Venturi, Archer, Geiberger, Sutherland … Grush?
Yes, Matt Grush. The same guy whose golf résumé two years ago wasn't strong enough to merit a spot in the 144-player
California State Fair Amateur Men's Championship field polished off a wire-to-wire win Monday in the region's most prestigious
amateur event.
His final round of 1-under-par 71 in windy conditions at Haggin Oaks' MacKenzie course was good for a 54-hole total of 13-under
203 and three shots clear of runners-up Chris Johnson (70) and Stephen Hale (71).
Grush's name will join a list of impressive past winners on the State Fair perpetual trophy.
"I guess I should try to get used to it," said the self-effacing 21-year-old UC Santa Barbara senior with the plaid shorts, cockeyed
hat and quick wit.
On a trying day in which the best score among the 45 players making the 36-hole cut was a 70, Grush played the first 11 holes in
2 under par and didn't make his first of two bogeys until No. 12, after which he held a four-shot lead.
Stanford junior Joseph Bramlett (75) trailed by two shots to start the day but quickly fell off the pace with a front-nine 39. Hale, a
Cal sophomore who started three shots back, moved within two of Grush before making a double bogey at No. 8 and a bogey at
No. 9. Johnson, a 40-year-old from Rancho Cordova, birdied No. 14 to get within two of the lead but missed a 10-foot birdie
attempt at No. 14 and then three-putted No. 15 to stall his bid.
The tournament turned in Grush's favor for good on No. 15 after his approach from 130 yards and the middle of the fairway
ended up in a bunker short of the green. He blasted to six feet and made the putt.
"That was the turning point," he said. "If I miss that putt … I don't want to think what might have happened."
The win was Grush's first since a Los Angeles high school league tournament five years ago. It was a popular one, too, for the No.
2 player on the Gauchos' golf team, judging from the dozens of hearty handshakes.
In a world of tall, lanky look-alikes, the 5-foot-8, 155-pounder with a laid-back personality, permanent smile and boomingbeyond-his-size drives stood out.
After opening with rounds of 64 and 68, there wasn't any chest-thumping. "I'm a make-the-cut kind of guy," he said. "We'll see."
Johnson put up a good fight. He started fast with a 35-footer for birdie on No. 1 and a 40-footer for birdie on No. 2 to get within
two shots of the lead, but he bogeyed Nos. 3 and 4 and couldn't get closer again. He was far from disappointed.
"Three rounds under par is the best I've ever done," said the veteran of 15 State Fair tournaments.
Hale birdied Nos. 16 and 17 to get within two shots of the lead. But when Grush's second shot to the par-5 closing hole found the
green's left fringe, Hale's last-gasp effort was for naught.
He had some consolation.
"It's cool to be low Bear," Hale said. Three Cal players (John Murphy was fourth, George Gandranata sixth) finished in the top nine
