T
elling a rumbustious tale of shipwrecks and
smugglers and the booty from both, this is a hard
walk but one which is well worth the effort. The
coastal views are magnificent and in summer the path is
alight with flowers and butterflies, as are the meadows
on the path up to Raphael Road. Take a picnic and make
a day of it!

Stretching 630 miles from Minehead on the edge of Exmoor
through to the shores of Poole Harbour,
the South West Coast Path is the best way
to explore the West Country's stunning coast.
A
stroll down Bridals Lane to the smugglers' bay
at Talland and around the coast to the
picturesque fishing village of Polperro, with its
narrow streets, tiny cottages and ancient steps carved
in the rocks above the beach cave. Allow time to pause
in the Heritage Museum for its tales of smugglers and
fishermen in Polperro's colourful past.

F
ollow in the steps of brides from the past, believed
to have travelled to Talland Church along this
lane, through an area once inhabited by Celtic
saints and the earliest Christians with links to the Holy
Land. Less angelic were the men who engaged in 'The
Trade', whose spirits are still said to haunt the bay. Wear
good shoes and be prepared for some steep hills.
The National Trust is a charity which owns
about 200 miles of the Cornish coastline. Its
aims are to promote the conservation of this
wonderful landscape whilst enabling people
to enjoy visiting the countryside in all sorts of
ways. In this area around Talland Bay many
of these walks go through National Trust land.

gentle walk with some ascent and descent,
travelling along the coast with views across to
Looe Island and beyond to Rame Head,
returning inland on a path through fields and
passingTalland Church, noted for its fifteenth century
bench-ends. If it's windy, listen out for the voice of
smuggler 'Battling Billy'!

A
n invigorating walk along the South West Coast
Path to the traditional fishing town of Looe with
its harbour, its beaches and its banjo pier. Allow
plenty of time for sightseeing before returning, either
the same way, or via inland paths and a quiet country
road. The paths are rough in places, and some of the
ascent and descent is steep.
