Sunday at Sandwich Antiques Show Settles in as Illinois’
Newest Monthly Antiques Market
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
Midwest antique-hunters now have a new destination for the second
Sunday of May through October: the brand new Sunday at Sandwich
Antiques Show. Held at the historic Sandwich, Illinois Fairgrounds an
hour west of the Windy City, the freshman event is a worthy successor to the
famed Sandwich Antique Markets of years past. Veteran dealers Renie &
Fred Mitchell, Chuck & Mary Springob, and Maureen & Jim Little
started the new enterprise, hoping to continue the Sandwich antiques
tradition years into the future.

ROOM TRADING
Many people miss some of the most informative and possibly most interesting aspects of a marble show.
A few days prior to the actual show, marble collectors and presenters exhibit their marbles in their
rooms. Many marbles are bought, sold and traded. You can really get to know marbles and collectors
during this time. Rooms will be open most of Friday afternoon, evening and all day Saturday. Just walk
up and down the halls and visit any room that is open, if you really want to know marbles. Attend Early,
it is a good time to buy, sell, trade or just get to know the collectors.
Sunday Show Admission: $2.00 • Children 12/under Free

Great Dealers, Great Deals, Great Crowd at the New
Sunday at Sandwich Antiques Show
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
Sandwich, Illinois. Just hearing the name stirs the hearts of antique enthusiasts everywhere who remember the glory years of the Sandwich Antiques
Market. Well, that original show may be just a memory now, but there’s a brand
new one to take its place: the Sunday at Sandwich Antiques Show. And though
it may be just the first season for the new indoor-outdoor antiques show, it’s off
to a promising start, with more than one-hundred quality antiques purveyors and
nice crowds at each of the 2013 monthly events.
I came out bright & early for the July 14th edition of the Sunday at Sandwich
Antiques Show, and the large parking lot was already filling up as I arrived. The
modest $5 admission fee includes parking in one of the several lots at the edge
of the Fairgrounds. It’s among the most picturesque county fairgrounds around,
with large trees providing welcome shade for the vendors and shoppers alike.
“For the Sunday at Sandwich Antiques Show, we wanted the focus to be on
quality antiques and collectibles dealers,” show co-promoter Maureen Little told
me. “We already have a good group of core dealers spreading the word. Our goal
is to make this event a profitable venue for our exhibitors and rewarding experience for the visiting public.”
Of course, many of the dealers were from Illinois, but there were quite a few
from the surrounding states as well. Tom Bergstrom’s Thunder Creek Antiques
was one of the local dealers, and brought a little bit of everything, from some
very modestly-priced Mid Century Modern furniture to an all-original 1947
Whizzer motorized bicycle, asking price $2,500. The nearby Sweet Pea’s set up
their big top-style tent to house their impressive inventory of American country
furniture and accessories, from stoneware and toys to a great-looking country
pine step-back cupboard.
Whatever your collecting interests you’re likely to find something to love here,
from cobalt-decorated stoneware at John Rudie Antiques to a wonderland of
primitives at Hedge Apple Antiques to Hunt No More’s selection of funky period signage.
Of course summer is largely behind us now, but you still have one more chance
to visit the Sunday at Sandwich Antiques Show. The season finale will be held
on Sunday, October 13th from 8:00 am through 4:00 pm. Just visit www.sundayatsandwichantiques.com for details and directions. Or feel free to give Mary
a call at 309-310-3596, or Maureen at 847-321-1712, for additional dealer information. And as always, keep an eye out for the 2014 schedule of the Sunday
at Sandwich Antiques Show in the Auction Action Antique News!

Book Description
What we celebrate today as “crafts” were once the means of everyday manufacture. The craftsman's product was not quaint, archaic, or
merely decorative—it was essential. The tools that created these necessities speak to the early American spirit of ingenuity. Simple but
resourceful, each tool was a beautiful, clever marriage of form and function, endowed with a life of its own, uniquely forged and perfectly suited for its purpose. The Landis
Valley Village & Farm Museum, the leading public attraction devoted to Pennsylvania German ("Pennsylvania Dutch") culture, works to preserve and carry the art of handcrafts into the modern age by educating and delighting visitors with their vast collection and craftwork demonstrators often in authentic dress, using period tools. With this
book, the museum celebrates the hand tool as a medium of expression and salutes those who wield it with skillful pride. Through hundreds of images of these elegantly
purposeful hand tools, the history of American handcraft is traced—sure to delight the luddite at heart.
Carson’s Cancer Journey - Please Read
On October 24th, 2011 our cancer journey began with our
son Carson Murfield. It was a chilly morning in October
when we got the news that changed our life as a family
forever. The entire weekend leading up to that Monday
morning, Carson was very ill. He was vomiting up every
bottle we tried to feed him, fussy, and fatigued. We
thought he had come down with something, knowing he
was only 5 months old and it was the start of cold and flu
season. Dad (Matthew Murfield) went off to work that
day and Mom (Christy Murfield) had called into work to
take care of Carson. We had a mid-morning appointment
with his pediatrician to figure out what had been going on
with our little man. The pediatrician got a second opinion and decided to send us to St.
Vincent Hospital for a CT Scan. He was under the assumption that Carson might have
had an infection in the tissue lining of his brain. A quick call to inform dad of what was
going on and we headed up to the hospital. I was very nervous about him being sedated
for the CT Scan, so my brother and best friend joined me at the hospital. We got to the
hospital, they took some vital signs from Carson and brought him down for the scan.
About an hour later, he was back in the room awake and still grumpy. The doctor on the
PICU floor that day came in to tell me what was going on with Carson. It wasn't a simple infection that could be treated with antibiotics. He told me that Carson has a large
mass near the base of his brain stem resembling a tumor. The tumor was blocking the
flow of spinal fluid through his brain and causing pressure to build up pushing against
his skull. Next thing I remember was that there was a flood of nurses in the room setting
up all kinds of equipment, in case he were to have a seizure. From there I delivered the
terrible news to Carson's father Matthew, my mother, my father, and step-mother.
Matthew left work and rushed up to the hospital by us. We then found out we were being
transported down to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee. They would have the necessary
equipment and doctors to take care of Carson from there. Into the ambulance I went with
Carson. They only allowed one other person, so Matthew and my brother follow in a car
behind us. Also my mom, dad, and step-mom followed. We got to the hospital and figured out that they would need to put a shunt in to drain the spinal fluid that was building
up in his brain. He was closely monitored that night and the Morning of Oct. 25th the
shunt was placed. After he came back from that procedure he was almost like himself
again, he took a bottle and was smiling. We knew the worst was still yet to come. On the
morning of October 27th, they took Carson down for the tumor removal surgery. Matt
and I got to walk down with him. We watched as they rolled his bed to the end of a very
long hall way. Then, we joined our family again and waited. About every hour to two
hours we got an update from the nurses in the surgery room. Everything was going good.
9
A blood transfusion was needed at one point, otherwise
through the nearly 14 hours of surgery things were stable.
Around 9 pm that night Carson was brought to the NICU
hooked up to at least 10 machines. We had a chat with the
doctor that did his surgery in a family meeting room
before we could go see Carson. He was able to remove
much more of the tumor than he had anticipated. This was
very good news. After that we all got some much needed
rest. Carson was sedated for 9 days after the surgery to
keep him calm and stable. Once he came out of sedation
we finally got to hold him. The tumor removal unfortunately caused some nerve damage to Carson affecting various things. The left side of his face had a droop, he didn't
blink his left eye, and the surgery had paralyzed his left
vocal cord. This meant that he couldn't eat by mouth. We had a feeding tube placed in his
nose to his stomach at first to get him nutrition. We also found out that it was very unlikely that he could hear out of his left ear. After nearly a month of recovery in the hospital,
we were set to go home. The day before Thanksgiving we had a g-tube placed in his
stomach for feedings. On Thanksgiving day of 2011 we got to come home. Carson could
not protect his air way due to his paralyzed vocal cord. We had all kinds of medication
and equipment we needed when we got home. He needed oxygen to help him breath at
night, and we had to use a machine to suck his nasal secretions out because he was unable
to swallow. Our living room looked like a mini hospital. In late January of 2012 Carson
and I headed back down to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee to complete 6 weeks of
radiation treatment. We stayed at the Ronald McDonald House during treatment.Carson's
father Matt unfortunately had to stay home and work to pay bills. He would come down
and stay the weekends with us when he could. After many months of recovery things got
better. Carson's nerves rebuilt the best they could. We had an in-home nurse, physical and
speech therapy that worked with us. We were going for regular MRI scans to make sure
he remained cancer free and they were all coming back clean. Over the next year he
learned to sit, crawl, and was able to eat on his own again. He also did not require oxygen at night anymore. September of 2012 Carson's feeding tube was removed and it was
safe for him to eat and drink by mouth again. From there he started to learn how to communicate with us, and started standing and walking short distances. Things had been progressing with him so well. On September 16th, 2013 we went for a routine MRI and the
results were not positive like they had been thus far. He has developed a new tumor. The
news we never wanted to hear again. We are awaiting a plan from his oncology team as
far as treatment goes. We are not sure what this treatment plan will hold for us but the
possibilities of further surgery, chemo therapy, and radiation therapy are all things that
could be possible. This means having to be down at Children's Hospital again and being
out of work so we can support Carson through this battle. Link for donations is

Fire-Fighting Exhibit Represents 35 Years of Collecting,
142nd Anniversary of Peshtigo Fire
Collections can begin in
unexpected ways. In the 1970s Dick
Griem had admired a cousin's 1950s
Smith Miller toy ladder truck. When
his cousin was ready to sell, Dick
was ready to buy, and so began a 30year chase to acquire fire-fighting
memorabilia. The 1950s ladder truck
is still the Griem's favorite; one of the
many items Dick, and his wife,
Fighting the Flames board game.
Debbie, will bring for the special
exhibit booth at the October 4 & 5 Wisconsin Antiques Dealers Association's
62nd Fall Show and Sale in Waukesha.
Marking the 142nd anniversary of the Peshtigo Fire (October 8, 1871),
the timely exhibit brings to mind the disaster that claimed 1,500 or more
Wisconsin lives and 1.2 million acres of forest. Because the Great Chicago
Fire took place two days later on October 10, 1871 killing hundreds of people
and destroying 3.3 square miles of Chicago, the Peshtigo Fire is quite often forgotten though both fires forever changed, for a variety of reasons, Wisconsin's
ancient woodlands.
A 1937 Dodge Fire Truck, part of the Griem's collection, is too large
to bring to Waukesha. However, plenty of other related objects will be on
display including ribbons & badges (back to the 1800s); fire extinguishers; helmets; nozzles; lights; pictures of old bucket brigades & battalions;
and board games & puzzles from the early 1900s will be on display.
Dick and Debbie Griem will be on hand to share their collection, delighted to answer any questions from newbies to advanced collectors alike. In
addition there are three large rooms to wander, all filled with authentic antiques
and experienced dealers at this semi-annual
invitation-only antiques show.
The Waukesha County
Expo
Center’s
Forum
Building, 1000 Northview

food customers have come to expect, a

menu so bring your appetite! Admission of
$6.00 funds scholarships for high school students as well as grants to Wisconsin historic
