N
obles and Ladies, Lady
Mary and I have been overwhelmed with the welcome
we have received from so many
of the members of Oasis Shrine
as we have traveled in our region
these first few months. We want to
thank each and every one of you
for your hospitality and genuine
expressions of love shown to us.
You all are extremely important to
us, and we are honored to count
you as friends.
March 20th found us at the Drum
and Bugle Corps bowling and family night. This is an event that the
Unit looks so forward to and we
love to share the fraternal relationship we all enjoy with not only the
members of the Corps, but with
non-Shriners also. It is a great
time to fellowship, and let our hair
down. We look forward to many
more adventures like this.
Noble Tommy Helms, Donnie
Wrenn and I were honored to attend the meeting at Cherryville
Shrine Club. The steak dinner
served by the members is going to
be hard to beat at any up-scale restaurant. Cherryville members are
extremely devoted to our charities,
contingency of convertibles headed to the Valley.
and it is always a treat to visit this
wonderful Club.
In keeping with my Blue Lodge
roots, I attended the District meeting of the Grand Lodge of North
Carolina at Westgate Lodge this
month with several of our Divan members. The night started
with a Steak dinner prepared by
their members and their Ladies
of Metrolina Shrine Club. It was
exciting to see members from all
over the district that I do not get to
see that often and to meet with our
Grand Master, Most Worshipful
Brother Douglas Caudle. Brother
Caudle who had a great message
for the Brethren, his message had
and emphasis on increasing membership, giving to our charities and
carrying on the tradition of Freemasonry. It was truly an inspirational evening.
Mary and I also attended the
Rag Tops monthly meeting at
O’Charleys in Concord this month.
It was great to break bread and
fellowship with this great group
of Nobels and their ladies. They
were finishing up their plans for
the Spring Ceremonial in Maggie
Valley and seemed to have a large
I have heard that Hillbilly Clan 13
had an exciting Hillbilly Degree
on April 30th at Randolph Shrine
Club. I know the new Hillbillies
are still reeling from that fun experience.
May 1st and 2nd you will see
Shriners positioned at businesses
throughout our fifty counties participating in the Paper Crusade.
This is one of the largest nationwide
benefits for Shrine Childrens Hospital of the year which will bring much
needed funds to help our Hospitals
operate. From all reports, all Oasis
Clubs and several Units will be hitting the streets to spread the word
about our Hospitals through the
Paper Crusade edition of the Desert
Dust, and collecting donations for
the Hospitals. I know it will be a
huge success, as usual.
On May 30th, Guilford Lodge
#656 in Greensboro, NC will hold
their annual Howard Coble Community Service Award banquet.
Noble Howard is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving in Congress
for more than 30 years until his
retirement last year. He is one
among many members of distinction who are members of Oasis
Shrine. We are honored to have
him in our Fraternity.
A number of the members of the
Divan attended the Mid-winter
SASA meetings in Pigeon Forge,
Tennessee. From all reports, it
appears that our SASA celebration
this year will be a family friendly
and fun event. Oasis is working
to provide lots of fun and fellowship at the beach and we look
forward to having a large crowd
for the Friday night parade. More
information about this event will
be forthcoming in the upcoming
months of the Dust and as in the
past, the headquarters will be the
Spring Maid resort.
Looking forward to next month, I
know everybody is excited about
our Spring Ceremonial in beautiful
Maggie Valley, NC. A lot of Nobles
and their Ladies have worked
extremely hard to bring to you a
weekend that will live a long time
in our memories. Not only will we
have a large class of new Nobles,
but many activities have been
planned with everyone in mind.
On Friday night, a number of Clubs
and Units will sponsor hospitality
rooms in several locations in Maggie Valley. In order to accommodate our members and Ladies, we
have arranged for shuttle buses
to transport everyone from the
different Hotels to each of these
Hospitality Rooms. The schedule
and route for these events will be
published in the June Desert Dust
and will be available at the Host
Hotel (Smokey Falls Lodge). The
“Hospitality Crawl” will give everyone the opportunity to enjoy
the fun and fellowship of each
one of these Clubs and Units. It
will also give our new candidates
and their ladies the opportunity to
be introduced to the different options available to them with regards
to joining a club or unit at Oasis.
Everyone will end up back at the
Host Hotel, where the Oasis Hospitality Room will be in full swing
and where Noble Kevin Carter will
delight everyone with his magical
DJ talents. Throughout Maggie
Valley, merchants will be ready to
share their wares and their services, with discounts being offered
by a number of them. On Saturday
morning, our new Nobles will witness the Ceremonial Team working
hard to help make these men new
Shriners, followed by lunch and
the Parade stepping off from Town
Hall; I am sure to the delight of our
Nobility, Ladies, residents and their
children in attendance. Saturday
evening, we will be entertained by
the famous band, “Reckless” for
the dancing and listening pleasure of everyone. Sunday morning
worship service will be held at the
shelter beside the Town Hall, with
Illus. Sir John Stanley presiding
over the service. See the full schedule is in this edition of the Desert
Dust. Don’t miss this Ceremonial
weekend. It will be one you will
remember for a long time.

you are a top-line signer for three
(3) or more new Shriners, Oasis
will pay your dues for 2016. If a
new Shriner joins a Club or Unit
in 2015, Oasis will pay his Club
or Unit dues. This is a way for everyone to win several times. You
will get a new Shrine brother, you
will get a new club or unit member
and you will get your dues paid for
2016. So talk to that Brother Mason you would like to see become
a Shriner and bring him to Maggie
Valley. We will all be winners.
On that note, if you know of anyone whom you feel would make
a great Shriner, please contact
them and submit their Petition for
Membership as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that our Membership Team, led by Noble Chris Hall
has been working hard to provide
the tools and incentives to each of
you in order to assist in increas-
As you can see, we are going
to be quite busy for the next
couple of months, but it doesn’t
stop there. Keep your eye on the
Desert Dust to stay up-to-date on
everything that is happening in
Oasis territory.
Please make your reservations for
Family Fun Day now! Camper spots
are filling up as well as the cook
teams. If you would like to Camp,
please contact Johnny Burgess of
the Divan to reserve your spot.
Rooms will also be available at the
Yorkshire Inn with shuttle services
to and from on Friday evening.
Since re-joining the Shrine Bowl
Association, your Divan has been
working to bring Oasis back into
the game in a big way. We recently crowned the Shrine Bowl
King from NC and the game has
started to fall into place. This is
a huge undertaking and we welcome any help we can get from
our members, for both small and
large tasks. If you would like to
get involved, contact Oasis Shrine
Center. We will welcome you with
open arms.
Yours in the faith

Just prior to the start of his year as Potentate of Oasis Shriners, Todd Ham
watched his son Jeffrey, clad in surgical scrubs examine a young patient
at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa. Pride radiated from his eyes
and a smile reflected his heartfelt gratitude as he and his son shared
looks and laughed while they interacted with four- year old Zavier. Zavier showed them both how easily he puts on his prosthesis. Jeffrey Ham
is a fourth year medical student at Debush College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tennessee. He plans to focus his practice on family
and sports medicine. He had the opportunity to observe Dr. Maureen
Maciel, Acting Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospital for Children-Tampa and
work closely with the expert medical team members during his final
semester of 2014.
Illustrious Sir Todd Ham and his family exemplify a Shrine legacy family with deep masonic roots that grow stronger with each generation.
Todd’s great-grandfather was a 33rd degree Mason, his father Joe Ham,
Brother Brad Ham and now both sons, Jeffrey and Joey are Masons
and Shriners. Todd was raised a Master Mason in 1983 and became a
Shriner that same year. He followed his father’s footsteps joining the
Oasis temple Drum and Bugle Corps. Todd has served as captain of his
beloved Drum and Bugle Corps and has played the snare drum for the
past 33 years. This strong family tradition resulted in three generations
of active drum and bugle corps members of the Ham family. Todd
Ham feels a deep dedication to the organization that is a lifeline to so
many children and displays that dedication in his leadership and life.
Jeffrey Ham always knew he wanted to be a Shriner. “I remember seeing my Dad, Papaw Joe and Uncle Brad march in parades, it was instilled so deeply within me that it was important to serve others and
help the children.” Jeff became an Oasis Shriner in 2010 in Concord,
NC. He described his time at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa
with Dr. Maciel and the medical team as invaluable. He beamed as
he explained how these clinical learning experiences with patients at
Shriners will benefit him in his career in sports and family medicine.
This medical educational opportunity had a serious impact on his
feelings towards his fraternity. “My experience increased my desire to
assist the fraternity. It wasn’t until I was actually part of the medical
team that I could truly see all the good Shriners International does in
the world. The money they raise every year goes toward this miracle
that I was lucky enough to witness every day. I want to ensure that
this miracle is always strong.”
As Jeffrey was close to completing his clinical experience at Shriners
Hospitals for Children-Tampa, then Chief Rabban Todd Ham and
Lady Mary visited with their son, learning about his unique experiences and interacting with his young patients. In 2015 as Illustrious
Sir Todd Ham leads the way for the Oasis Shriners and Noble Jeffrey Ham graduates from medical school they will weave more rich
memories into the strong fabric of their family and fraternity.

Shriners throughout the Oasis region are
preparing for one of the most fun and
exciting weekends of the year. FAMILY
FUN DAY, at beautiful Red Fez Shrine
Club, June 19 & 20, stands to be one of
the most fun events you will experience
in 2015, second only to the Maggie Valley
Ceremonial. A very close second.
9:00am - 11:00am - Youth Fishing
Tournament (If you don’t have a pole, we
will supply one. Must be accompanied

so much excitement planned for these
two days, you will truly be a loser if you
miss it. It is an event we look forward to
every year.

Illustrious Sir Todd Ham has decreed
that ALL Divan Members must
participate. Each Divan Member is
required to raise $100.00 in order to be
exempt from the booth. All proceeds go
to Shrine Children’s Hospital. Donations
can also be collected to bribe the Divan
Members to be dunked, but it might take
more than $100.00.
If you have a camper, now is the time
to reserve your spot. They are going
fast, and you do not want to miss out.
Contact Noble Johnny Burgess at 704564-2193 now to reserve. Camper spots

The Reckless Band is widely known for being just that: Reckless. They mix Country, Rock, and Southern Rock
covers with unpredictable stage antics, uncharacteristic of a “country” band. Their live performances have
landed them in clubs they had only dreamed of playing, such as the War Eagle Super Club in Auburn, Rhythm
& Brews in Tuscaloosa, and The Iron Horse Cafe in Birmingham. In addition to their steady club presence, they
have entertained scores of Greek and other private parties, such as weddings, birthdays, corporate events, golf
tournaments, tailgates, and just about anything else you could think of all over the Southeast. Professional yet
unpredictable, The Reckless Band always fills the stage with a rock star presence from down home boys. For this
band the party’s just getting started, and will for years to come!!

Oasis Shriners Ink Deal with the
Professional Drag Racing Association
On March 31, 2015 The PDRA, a National sanctioning body of professional racers chose
Shriners Hospitals for Children to be their official charity. Noble Jim Turner, of Greensboro, put the principals together. Having owned and operated race tracks in the Carolinas,
and being the current Producer of the Shriners Hot Road Show (Donations to Shriners
Hospitals to date Exceeds $100,000) Jim was a natural to bring the two organizations
together. Although the actual deal was recently signed, the background work goes back
nearly two years. And interestingly enough, NASCAR driver, Noble David Ragan had a
hand in making it happen… Stay with me here…
Outlaw Class Dragster
Mike Congdon was David Ragan’s manager while he drove for Roush Racing in the AAA
Ford. Mike left David’s employ when David lost his contract with Roush. But Mike had met
many Shriners while traveling with David…
Jim Turner had a former partner who went to work for the Professional Drag Racing Association. He hired Mike Congdon to be the Marketing Director of the PDRA…
So, when Jim approached Mike Congdon about making Shriners Hospitals its’ official charity, Mike knew exactly who we were and the work we do.
As they say, it was a marriage made in heaven.
The first National Event, the Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway was the first race to
be held after the signing of our contract. Noble Jim and I drove to the track the first day
of competition even though there had been storms and heavy rain forecast that day. We
were hoping to just possibly speak to some of the drivers during a rain delay. The day was
overcast and windy, but no rain fell. Mike met us at the competition gate and drove us into
the track on his golf cart. Jim explained that we hoped to be at the mandatory drivers meeting to make the official announcement to them all at once, but since the weather was iffy,
we just wanted to speak to any that we could meet… Now this is divine intervention at its
best. The first person we spoke to commented on my fez and said “I have a story to tell you
about Shriners Hospitals”. Chris Davis’ son passed at the age of 21, but had been treated
at Shriners for most of his life. Chris told us Shriners gave him his son for many years and
if there was anything he could do to help, he would do it gladly. We asked him to be our
spokesperson at the Drivers Meeting when we made the announcement.
Running four hours late due to a rain delay, the drivers, crews and family members surrounded us on the starting grid. Jim Turner was introduced, and he spoke of racing and
our hospitals. When it came my turn, there was nothing to say except to introduce Chris
Davis, one of their own. Chris told his son’s story and there were many grown men wiping
away tears when he was done. And then out of the crowd came a racer with $100 as his
contribution. There will be many more of those coming forward as we move into the coming year. Imperial Sir Jerry Gant has given his blessings to Oasis to be the contact with the
organization…all monies collected will go into Oasis’ hospital fund.
With National events all over the eastern US, we know Shriners everywhere will both enjoy
and participate in the racing series’ fund raising. Admission…Wear your Fez!
POST SCRIPT: On Saturday, April 11, Noble Jim Turner returned to Rockingham for the
race. Shriners were on the starting line, and a military fly-over earmarked
the National Anthem. The crowd was over 8,000 strong, and when it was
announced that Shriners Children’s Hospital was the official charity for the
PDRA, the crowd gave a standing ovation. What a wonderful kick-off to a
marvelous sponsorship by such a generous organization. Thanks to Noble
Jim for being the impetus for this wonderful opportunity to help our kids.

This award is for you
It’s time for Shriner
of the Month Nominations –
We Want to Hear from You
The Shriner of the Month Award honors
members who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to both their fraternity and philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals
for Children®. After initiating the Shriner
of the Month Award program in January
2014, we have opened the nomination
process to all of our temples and hospitals. We want to honor the everyday,
hardworking, always-there-for-whatever-you- need-him-for Shriner in your
temple or hospital. You know who we
mean; and we want to hear about him.
Each month, one outstanding noble is
chosen as the Shriner of the Month, with
nominations taken quarterly. This round,
your nominations will be considered for
the months of May, June and July 2015.
To honor these exceptional individuals,
each Shriner of the Month is highlighted
in an issue of Shriner Magazine: Pride
and Tradition and the annual report, and
featured on Shriners Village, the Shriners International website, social media, and more. In addition, the honoree
receives a signed plaque from the Imperial Potentate and a commemorative pin.
Personal displays of leadership, consistent participation in temple activities
and efforts, dedication to membership
initiatives, and/or contributions to the
health care system, all add to one’s consideration for the award. In short, we
want to honor the “unsung heroes” of
Shriners International.

ello again from your
Temple Band. It’s been a
while since our last letter.
I hope to catch you up on what
we’ve been up to.
We had our annual Christmas Party at the Sands Restaurant on December 9th last year. Noble Captain Shea Fadel, along with Sandy
his caterer, put on an excellent
dinner. She has served us in the
past, it’s always good. Along with
Lady Sandra Fadel and kids (Alex
and Shea II), Noble Lieutenant
Doug Teague PC and Susan, everything came together just fine. Capt.
Shea’s awards this year went to:
newly created Noble Director Patrick Watkins and Noble Thomas
Sellers V, QM. Patrick received the
Bring it on Award for his enthusiasm as our new Director. Tommy
received the Behind the Scenes
Award for doing everything asked
of him, including playing our bass
drum. We invited most of the ringers from 2014 to show them just
how much we appreciate their
help throughout the year.
The Band had a very important
gig March 15th. We played at the
wedding of one of our members.
We’re so proud. Susan (now Lady
Susan Teague) finally made Noble
Doug (pictured) an honest man.
We assembled a small ensemble
of nobles and guests at Antioch
Baptist Church in Taylorsville, NC.

I mentioned our new director Noble Patrick Watkins. He wrote us
a short biography. Here it is: I attended North Rowan High School
where I first began my Masonic
and Shriner Journey by playing
with the Oasis Shrine Band. I went
on to receive my Bachelor of Music Degree from Appalachian State
University. I petitioned Lee Masonic Lodge in Taylorsville, NC and
shortly after became a Shriner in
Hickory last year. I am now the Associate Director of Bands at Alexander Central High School and the
Director of the Oasis Shrine Band.
Patrick said he is excited to explore new opportunities with the
Shrine Band to promote and raise
money for the cause; Making Music to Help Children Walk. With
the help of his Lady Tamara Honea
and his family Rindy, Billy and Katie Watkins and Stacie Maxwell, he
is confident in a bright future for
the band.

by Oasis Shriners Board Opens
Possibility of Return of The Shrine Bowl
of the Carolinas to Charlotte
DESERT DUST MAY 2015
PAGE 11
MOORE COUNTY SHRINE CLUB
& The Sand “T” Parade Unit
Oasis Shriners Board of Directors has enthusiastically voted to rejoin the Carolinas’ five other
Shrine Chapters in sponsoring The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. The Shrine Bowl of the
Carolinas was started by Oasis Shriners of Charlotte in 1937 and was played in Charlotte’s
Memorial Stadium through 2000. The game then moved to South Carolina as Oasis leadership focused on other fund raising projects for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Oasis is the
largest chapter in Shriners International with more than 5,800 members in the fifty western
counties of North Carolina. Oasis also is the biggest fund raiser of Shriners International’s
195 chapters raising $1,300,000 last year for Shriners Hospitals for Children.
A ground swell of popular support in North Carolina and in Charlotte in particular convinced
Oasis leadership that the time was right for Oasis to return to sponsorship of this venerable
game that pits the top football players from North Carolina high schools against the best
from South Carolina high schools each December. There is also great popular support by
former Charlotte Shrine Bowl players and fans to bring the game back to Charlotte. A committee is being formed by Jeff Beaver, former Executive Director of the Charlotte Regional
Sports Commission, to develop support among Charlotte leaders to return the game to the
Carolinas’ largest city.
A lunch discussion with Charlotte natives Beaver and outstanding Charlotte attorney Lynwood Mallard revealed the important impact of the Shrine Bowl on them. Both Beaver and
Mallard were football stars on Myers Park High School football teams coached to greatness
by the legendary Gus Purcell. Beaver quarterbacked the North Carolina team to victory in the
1962 Shrine Bowl. Mallard who was not a Shrine Bowl player but who played for Davidson
College remembers the thrills of the many Shrine Bowls and Shrine parades he attended
growing up in Charlotte. Beaver commented that it was exciting to be on the same team in the
Shrine Bowl with a number of players he had played against. Some of those players joined
him as college football stars such as North Carolina Tar Heels teammate Danny Talbott and
Duke’s Bob Matheson. Some also became professional football players during the same
time that Beaver played with quarterback Johnny Unitas on the Baltimore Colts professional
football team. Matheson, for example, had a great career with the Miami Dolphins and the
Cleveland Browns. Beaver said that playing on a winning Shrine Bowl team was a highlight
of his football career. He said as a seventeen year old player the most impressive part of his
Shrine Bowl experience was the players’ visit to the Greenville, S. C. Shriners Hospital for
Children. He called that experience with the brave patients “fantastic”.
For Beaver the Shrine Bowl is a family affair because his late brother Hal, another outstanding Myers Park High School quarterback, was a star of the 1958 game. Hal later played for
Georgia Tech. Beaver who has a uniquely successful record of bringing great sports events
to Charlotte is convinced that the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas will be a huge success if it
returns to its first home, Charlotte. He commented that his good friend Governor Pat McCrory
will be a great advocate for bringing the Shrine Bowl back to North Carolina.

Zachary G. Shoaf IV Shriners Hospital of Boston Patient
When my son was born on September 5th, 2007, we had no ideas he would be
born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate. I just saw this beautiful baby boy be
pulled out of my stomach. I did not notice. The nurses told my husband and then
brought me my son and that was the first time I saw his mouth.
We then were referred
to a plastic surgeon
in Charlotte that my
husband and I were not
comfortable with. Very
nice man but I did not feel
he was the doctor for my
son. This was in October
2007.
During November I took
my son and daughter to
see Santa at Asheville
Mall one afternoon with
my mother-in-law. The
Santa pulled my motherin-law aside and was
telling her that he was a
Shriner and would love to
give us information
and help us with his care.
He then spoke to me and
told me to contact Tampa,
FL. He said that was his
home state. He then said
he will be fine please let
the Shriners help fix him.
A week later after speaking to my husband about this we decided this was
meant to be. That Santa was put in our path for a reason. I did contact Tampa
who put me in contact with Charlotte. Then we had an Uncle that was a local
Haywood County Shriner.
I went back to the Asheville Mall to thank that Santa and he was not there. I
asked the lady about him and she said they only had one Santa. I asked her if
he was out around November 17th when I was there to see him. She said yes
but only for that day she had forgotten about that. I have felt that this Santa was
an Angel for us. The one and only day I was there he was there I was there
with my son. After that day people and doctors have been put in our path that
has helped with his health. I have always kept that picture out to remind us that
Santa is the reason my son is doing so good with his health.
The doctors and nurses in Boston have always been so helpful and supportive
of his health. They have helped me while there and while so far away. Dr. Lewis
has made my son look as though nothing was wrong with him at birth. This is
amazing to see then and know.
The Shriners have changed our lives over these years and will continue. I am
always telling people how great they are and if they don’t believe me look at my
son and you will see it firsthand what these people can do.
I thank you and that secret Santa from the bottom of my heart.
God Bless, Love in Christ,
Mary Ann Shoaf

“I think sleep can be classified as an essential
nutrient,” said Michele Gottschlich, Ph.D.,
clinical research scientist, Shriners Hospitals for
Children® — Cincinnati. “It’s as vital to health and
recovery as proper nourishment.” Dr. Gottschlich
studies the role of sleep in children recovering
from severe burns.
Healing touch is a non-invasive energy healing therapy to enhance
and facilitate physical, emotional and self-healing. Trained and
certified practitioners use their hands
in an intentional way. A pilot study at
Cincinnati Shriners Hospital showed that
healing touch was more effective than
sleep medication in reestablishing deep,
restorative sleep.
For a long time, not much was known
about the link between sleep and
healing. Shriners Hospitals for Children
— Cincinnati is proud to be a pioneer in the developing field of sleep
medicine. We are committed to helping our patients get the healing
sleep they need to recover as fully as possible and have healthy futures,
Gottschlich said.

“The Beat on the Street”
with your Drum & Bugle Corps
During this visit we would
like to share with you once
more stories that involve
Masonic Unity, Family &
Friends, and of course
Fundraising & Fellowship !
First, can you remember
back in February, the several days of ice and snow?
Many a blue lodge, parade
unit, and club had to delay
or cancel their meetings.
I learned about one special meeting that went on
as planned, in spite of the
threat of ice and snow at
Mount Holly #544. Part of
that meeting, was to help
celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ed Cauthen being Master of the Lodge in
1965. He started his Masonic journey eight years
earlier in the spring of 1957
and by September he was
a Master Mason. That was
just the beginning. While
most probably just call him
Ed, there are many titles
that he has earned during
his journey. Brother, Worshipful Master, Noble, Past
Captain to name a few.
After becoming a Master
Mason, he then became a
part of the York & Scottish
Rite before being created a

Noble in Oasis Shirners. We
believe Ed joined the Drum
& Bugle Corps in 1960, a
mere 55 years ago. Starting
in his “blue lodge” Ed became active, going through
the chairs before being
elected Master. In the D&B
he marched and played the
bugle. Just as in the lodge,
Ed remained active after
joining and eventually became the Captain, serving
from 1971 – 1974. Although
he doesn’t march in the parades any longer, as one of
the “Veteran” members Ed
still comes out to support
the Corps at most events,

during the Installation of Illustrious Sir Todd Ham. In
the Drum & Bugle Corps we
are proud of all of the work
that our Noble Brothers
have done and are doing in
the name of Masonic Unity.
We congratulate Noble
Worshipful Brother Ed Cauthen, for being recognized
by his lodge and thank him
for more than 50 years of
service to the Corps.
Secondly, we want to thank
everyone that came out
for Family Bowling Night in
March. The day of was one
of those perfect early spring
days and as night fell there
was plenty of fun for all inside. Our Captain Dave Wal-
lace and Lady Betsy were
happy to greet a very large
group that took up four lanes
and included close to 20
children. One special part
of the night was that there
would be a surprise wedding proposal. No one in the
Corps knew this couple, but
the bowling alley staff started passing out white roses
to all of the ladies and girls
and ask everyone to come
to a special area when an
announcement was read
over the loud speakers. The
young man wanted to make
his proposal different and he
succeeded. One by one the
ladies and girls went over
handing their white rose to
the young woman. Then
the young man proposed.
She said yes, and everyone

cheered. We came to bowl
and fellowship and got an
extra treat by being allowed
to take part in this special
time their lives.
Lastly, we want to take one
more opportunity to ask you
come out and support our
5th annual Car & Truck Show
at the Mt. Holly Spring Fest
on Main Street in Mount
Holly, NC on Saturday, May
2nd from 9 am until 1 pm.
This is a 100% Hospital fundraiser. Yes, you can register your vehicle on the day
of the show. Just come on
out between 8 and 9. There
is a fee to register. Awards
for Best Car, Best Truck, and
Best of Show. Hope to see
you there, because, “When
the hospital wins, we all win!

Living Together...in Unity
“How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in Unity” – Psalm 133
March madness!! As this is
being written, the final college men’s basketball game
of the season has been
played, and the celebrations
are continuing on a well
known North Carolina Campus! The Most Valuable
Player has been named.
What? The “Most Valuable”
Player! Note that the word
player is singular—nothing about players. (Plural).
Why do we try to separate
individuals from the teams
of which they are so much
a part? Selecting THE most
valuable player in games
where just one player would
be slaughtered without the
work of teammates seems
that we prefer to think in
terms of the individual rather than the group. We must
relate to one another.
In our Masonic Ritual, we
hear those golden words
from Psalm 133, “How good
and pleasant it is when
brothers live together in
unity”. (Yes, could be brothers and sisters). But, there
is another part of the Bible
when we read that we are
not to be alone. This occurs
very early in the Bible—in
fact the 2nd chapter of Genesis. God created some-
thing and called it good. He
created something else and
called it good, and another
thing and He called it good.
Then, He said, “it is not
good that the man should be
alone”. Did you hear that?
He created the world and
called it “good”; but, then
He said that it is NOT good
for the man to be alone!
“How good and pleasant it is
when brothers live together
in unity”. We work for the
common good. This means
that we will take a more serious look at how we handle
the question of making sure

“How good and pleasant
it is when brothers live together in unity”.
Dr. David Leininger writes
about a man whose life work
was completed, who died and
arrived at the “pearly gates”.
He wanted to go down to Hell
to have a look at what life
was like in Heaven as well as
Hell. He was amazed to see a
vast banquet table laden with
every good thing to eat and
drink, but the people around it
all looked like they were starving! Their arms were bound in
front of them, straight and stiff
in splints, with the result that
no one could get his hand to
his mouth. It was an unbearable sight. So the man rushed
back to Heaven.
In Heaven, the sight that he
saw took him by surprise.
Once again he was confronted at a banquet table
laden with all manner of good
things. Around the table once
again were people whose
arms had been stiffened with
splints. But, here the people
were happy and well-fed. “I
don’t understand”, said the
man. “the circumstances
seem the same, but there
is such a difference in the
health and attitudes”.
“It is all really quite simple”,
said St. Peter, “you don’t
feed yourself with arms like
that, but you CAN feed your
neighbor. Up here, you see,
we have learned to reach
across the table and to feed
each other with our out-stiffened arms”.
“How good and pleasant it is
when brothers live together
in unity”. How good and how
pleasant it is when brothers
and sisters help each other.
In sadness and in grief, we
are not alone, we have each
other. When the pain is
great, we are not alone, we
have each other.
As Shriners, whether we are
together in a unit, in a Shrine
Club, or whether we are together at a Shrine Ceremonial, let us celebrate our unity.
Let us celebrate the fact that
we are not alone. We are
together. “How good and
pleasant it is when brothers
live together in unity”.
Remember the Worship
Service at 9:30 a.m., Maggie
Valley Sunday.

Yogurt is Sweeter for Young
Girl Learning to Feed Herself
In honor of Occupational Therapy
Month, Justine Caramanna, an
occupational therapist at Shriners
Hospitals for Children® — Philadelphia,
shares the sweet triumph of Victoria
who, through occupational therapy, is
learning to feed herself.
Victoria looked at the strawberry yogurt
being poured into her bowl and began
to bounce in her seat with excitement.
Since she is a “big girl” – a year and a
half old – one could expect that Victoria
would grab her spoon and insist upon
feeding herself. However, Victoria
has arthrogryposis, a rare congenital muscle disorder causing stiff joints and
abnormal muscle development.
Because of her condition, Victoria has limited movement of her extremities and
has never held a spoon independently or been able to move her arm enough to
bring it to her mouth. She requires assistance with feeding.
Today is going to be different.
As an occupational therapist at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Philadelphia,
I’m trained to analyze a person’s abilities, the challenges he or she faces, and
the surrounding environment. I use this information to create adaptations to
assist a person in completing a task as independently as possible.
Since Victoria cannot grasp, I made a special strap to hold a spoon in her hand.
Instead of a regular spoon, I use an adapted one that is angled, making it easier
for her to reach to her mouth.
I pour the yogurt into a high-sided bowl. A suction cup is attached to the bottom
of the bowl so Victoria can rest her arm on it without the bowl sliding or tipping
over. Now, with her arm teetering on the edge of the bowl like a see-saw,
Victoria can use just a little shoulder movement to make her hand go up or
down, bringing the spoon with it.
Victoria moves her shoulder up, and the spoon dips down into the yogurt. I
give her gentle prompts and cheers in her native Spanish. I say, “Abajo,” which
means down; and she moves her shoulder down, and up like a see-saw comes
her hand with the spoon. I prompt her again, “Arriba,” which means up, and the
spoon returns to the bowl.
Victoria is smiling, and her mouth is now covered in the pink yogurt she has fed
herself!
I’m smiling, too, because I know that my activity analysis and resulting
intervention have been successful.

I
t is amazing that another
month has flown by at
break-neck speed. We’ve
been so busy Shrining that we
barely have time to sit down and
write an informational column
to enter into the Award Winning,
Shrinedom’s Internationally Acclaimed Oasis Desert Dust. Like
the many obligations before us
we don’t falter to underperform
as Oasis Shriners Patrolmen.
Many things have been happening since last month’s article,
many simultaneously pulling
our Patrol Unit in different directions like a cyclone. It is
almost always enjoyable as it
has been said “you can have
fun shoveling horse manure...
if you’re with the right bunch of
friends”. So let it be that Fulfillingly Fun is a good battle-cry
mantra for our Patrol Unit.
We hit several regular Patrol
meetings, a Family Cookout, a
Hospital visitation, a regional
SASA meeting, a couple of Oasis
Club visitations, an Oasis Stated
meeting and a NC Grand Lodge
lecture event in a great historic
Masonic Lodge in Asheville. It
all adds up to being dedicated
and committed Shriners. On
top of that, several of our members are very active in many
other aspects of North Carolina
Freemasonry. We have several
Blue Lodge Ambassadors talking up Oasis Membership at our
Masonic Blue Lodges; not just
our own Lodges, but as a visitation, travelling to other Lodges
by request or our own desire.
Our Patrol members are highly
encouraged to remain active in
their Blue Lodges. It is just one
thing that makes North Carolina
Strong – Masonically.
As the view
in our rearview mirror
gets smaller
it just means
the view out
the
front
glass is getting larger. And bigger things
are a coming. Within a month
or so we will be attending the
much anticipated Oasis Spring
Ceremonial in quaint and lovely
Maggie Valley, NC. By order of
our Oasis Potentate, Illustrious
Sir Todd Ham and his First Lady
Mary every Oasis Club and Unit
is encouraged to participate in
a Hospitality Crawl by hosting a
hospitality room. The idea is to
promote attendance among the
new candidates to visit all of the
participating Clubs and Units.
Our Patrol Unit is embracing
the challenge and hosting a hospitality room at our headquarters hotel; Best Western Moun-

tainbrook Inn on Sico Rd., the
main drag through Maggie Valley. Come see us.
Please be mindful of the many
Oasis and Patrol members that
are not feeling the best as well
as trying to help keep their
caregivers spirits lifted up as
well. Please join me in keeping
them in our special thoughts
and prayers. Send a card, make
a phone call and/or pay a visit
to cheer them up. They will be
glad you did and I bet you will
be glad as well.

Ryan Johnson came to SHC – Chicago as a patient in 1988, and remained under the
care of Dr. Ken Kuo for 14 years. He remembers the homey atmosphere here—the play
area, our ”real good” doctors, and Shrine drivers and their helpfulness on every trip.
“It’s an amazing hospital,” he recalled recently on a trip
from Columbia City, IN, to our hospital, bringing his son
Colton, who has become a second-generation patient

Ryan was so happy to be back with us, in a sort of homecoming, to a place so important to him and his ultimate
success in life, as father and professional. Welcome

Former Patient Returns with Her Father
to Honor Her Mother, Delores
Tamara Kaufman Bauer of Bellevue, NE, was a burn patient at
SHC – Chicago in 1961, before
there were Shriners pediatric
burn hospitals— which were
launched at SHC – Galveston
in 1966. Suffering from severe
scalding burns on her legs and
feet, she came here (photo
right) to be
treated by
our plastic surgeons. A patient under the care of Dr. Edward Millar
and Dr. Abdul Rashied Shedbalkar, she had numerous surgeries.
After attending a community college, Tamara worked in the hospitality industry.
Her late mother Delores (photo left) was especially pleased with
Tamara’s care here and fond of this great pediatric hospital. It was
our pleasure to host Tamara and her adoptive father Gail, to have
lunch with them, and to provide a tour of
our facility. They presented a memorial gift
to Yours Truly, in honor of Delores Kaufman. Delores Kaufman’s
name will be recorded in our hospital’s Gold Book—which
would have pleased her mother greatly. As you can see (photo
above left), the gift was presented in front of the hospital’s Gold
Book, in the Lobby of the hospital. We are always honored to
host former patients, who were blessed by their care here and
who want to help others now under our special care. It was a
delight meeting and hosting Tamara and Gail on their recent
visit. Thank you, Friends! It’s been a pleasure meeting you both!
