PRAYER OF COMMENDATION RITE OF COMMITTAL IN CATHEDRAL CRYPT ECCE SACERDOS Father J. E. Ronan Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God. Therefore by an oath the Lord made him increase among his people. He gave him the blessing of all nations and confirmed his covenant upon his head. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 18 3 E’EN SO LORD JESUS QUICKLY COME GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION For Catholics As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. For our fellow Christians We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ's prayer for us "that they may all be one" (Jn 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 § 4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 § 3). For those not receiving Communion All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. Paul Manz Cathedral Basilica Choir Peace be to you and grace from Him, who freed us from our sins, Who loved us all and shed His blood that we might saved be. Sing Holy, Holy to our Lord, The Lord, Almighty God, Who was and is and is to come; Sing Holy, Holy Lord! Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein, Rejoice on earth, ye saints below; For Christ is coming, is coming soon, For Christ is coming soon! E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, And night shall be no more; They need no light nor lamp nor sun, For Christ will be their All! AVE VERUM CORPUS William Byrd Archdiocesan Choir of Philadelphia English Translation, Sung in Latin Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, Who has truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mortals, Whose side was pierced, whence flowed water and blood: Be for us a foretaste (of heaven) during our final examining. O Jesu sweet, O Jesu pure, O Jesu, Son of Mary, have mercy upon me. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION For non-Christians We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family. Copyright © 1996, United States Catholic Conference. Peter Latona PRELUDES SEEK TO SERVE Lloyd Pfautsch, b. 1921 Archdiocesan Choir of Philadelphia Commissioned for the 41st International Eucharistic Congress held in Philadelphia in 1976. This setting was commissioned for the Installation of Archbishop Charles Chaput, September 8, 2011. May I live in the world as one who always seeks to serve. May I live as one who knows the love of God. Lord, teach me how to live and how to serve. With my ears may I hear. With my eyes may I see. With my lips may I speak. May your Word be heard through me. Thus as I live each day may love sustain the will to serve. Amen. THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD As when the shepherd calls his sheep, they know and heed his voice; So when you call your family, Lord, we follow and rejoice. With joyful lips we sing to you our praise and gratitude, That you should count us worthy, Lord, to share this heavenly food. Is not the cup we bless and share the blood of Christ outpoured? Do not one cup, one loaf declare our oneness in the Lord? The mystery of your presence, Lord, no mortal tongue can tell: Whom all the world cannot contain comes in our hearts to dwell. You give yourself to us, O Lord; then selfless let us be, To serve each other in your name in truth and charity. Text: Omer Westendorf; Music: BICENTENNIAL, CM, with Refrain, Robert E. Kruetz. Mr. Stopford is from Belfast, Ireland. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor: He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliv’rance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord; To give unto them that mourn a garland of ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before the nations. 5 MYSTERY OF FAITH I N T R O D U C T O RY R I T E S PROCESSION MASS OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL Arr. LITURGY OF THE PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR AND THE GIFTS CANTIQUE DE JEAN RACINE Gabriel Fauré, 1845-1924 Archdiocesan Choir of Philadelphia English Translation, Sung in French O Redeemer divine, our sole hope of salvation, Eternal Light of the earth and the sky, we kneel in adoration. O Savior, turn on us Thy loving eye. Send down on us the fire of Thy grace all consuming, whose wondrous might dispersed the pow’rs of hell, And rouse our slumb’ring souls with Thy radiance, that they may waken Thy mercy to tell! O Christ bestow Thy blessing on us, we implore Thee, who here are gathered on penitent knee, Accept the hymns we chant to Thine eternal glory and these Thy gifts we return unto Thee! PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS 8 EUCHARIST 13 GOSPEL MATTHEW 5:1-12A Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. W hen Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.” Deacon: LITURGY OF THE FIRST READING WISDOM 3:1-9 As sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. T he souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. For if before men, indeed they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. In the time of their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through stubble; They shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall be their King forever. Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect. All: Lector: HOMILY All: MOST REVEREND TIMOTHY M. DOLAN 12 WORD 9 RESPONSORIAL PSALM F or if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection. We know that our old self was crucified with him, so that our sinful body might be done away with, that we might no longer be in slavery to sin. For a dead person has been absolved from sin. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him. PSALM 23:1-3, 4, 5, 6 John Goss The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; Beside restful waters he leads me; He refreshes my soul. He guides me in right paths for his names sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley, I will fear no evil, for you are at my side, With your rod and your staff that give me courage. Lector: All: You spread the table before me, in the sight of my foes; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Only goodness and kindness follow me, all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come. SECOND READING ACCLAMATION BEFORE THE GOSPEL MODE VI ROMANS 6:3-9 We, too, might live in newness of life. B rothers and sisters: Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. 10 If we die with Christ, we shall live with Him, and if we are faithful to the end, we shall reign with Him. 11 RESPONSORIAL PSALM F or if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection.
