TEAM HISTORY
The Austin Turfcats are a professional indoor football team and a
charter member of the Southern Indoor Football League set to begin
play for the SIFL's inaugural 2009 season. Based in Texas' capitol
city of Austin, the Turfcats will play their home games at the
Luedecke Arena at the Travis County Exposition Center.
The team's Vice President/General Manager is Ronald Oswalt.
Oswalt previously worked with the Katy/Texas Copperheads of the
NIFL and af2 and the Beaumont Drillers of the APFL.
SOUTHERN INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The Southern Indoor Football League is a professional indoor football
league created in 2008. Based in Texas and Louisiana, it will have six
teams for its inaugural season - probably the most notable of them is
the Louisiana Swashbucklers, who won the Intense Football League's
final two championships and was originally going to join their Intense

brethren in the Indoor Football League before deciding to make the
move.
2008-2009 SIFL NEWS
SIFL announces first franchises
November 18, 2008 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Coupling a first-class, family-oriented sports experience with a sound
business plan that encourages financial success, the Southern Indoor
Football League announced its charter roster of franchises on
Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at O'Charley's Restaurant in Lake
Charles, La.
Louisiana Swashbucklers owner Thom Hager, who will also serve as
SIFL President, released that thirteen ownership groups have
submitted the proper paperwork and have agreed to the financial
responsibilities.
``I'm wearing my sunglasses because the future is so bright,'' Hager
said. "I'm not going to blow this out of proportion by saying today is
the greatest day in the history of indoor football, but it is so satisfying
to have assembled a group of solid businessmen who appreciate a
AUSTIN TURFCATS PRESS CONFERENCE 1 – SOUTHERN INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE
6
solid business model and are committed to offering a quality football
product both on the field and in the community.''
The SIFL will kick off a 12-game schedule in April 2009 in the
following cities:
1) Austin Texas. Turfcats Sports and Entertainment, LLC
2) Houma, Louisiana [Franklin Thomas, owner]
3) Houston, Texas [Andrew Watkins, owner]
4) Lafayette, Louisiana [Bentley Turner, owner]
5) Lake Charles, Louisiana. (Louisiana Swashbucklers, owned by
Hager and playing in the Lake Charles Civic Center.
6) Pasadena, Texas [Gary Howard-led ownership group]
Commitments for 2010 have been secured for Beaumont, Tex.;
Galveston, Tex., Lakeland, Fla., Pensacola, Fla., Tallahassee, Fla.,
Tampa, Fla., and Waco, Tex. with more ownership groups showing
strong interest.
"We're still receiving calls from around our region as if a light bulb
tuned on and ownership groups finally found the perfect business
model for this great sport," Hager said. ``The size of the league will
be finalized at our league meetings in Lake Charles December 1-2 at
the premier Pinnacle property, L'Auberge du Lac. "While we wish all
competing leagues good fortune and success, I believe this bold new
endeavor is the result of my thirteen years in sports management."
Hager's Swashbucklers have been recognized as one of the sport's
premier teams, winning back-to-back Intense Football League
championships, the latter in 2008 with a perfect 16-0 record. Off the
field, the Swashbuckler staff garnered virtually every award given to
league front office staffs.
Now it's time to take that business model from team to league levels.
`I've seen too many fans lose their home teams due to poor business
models and inexperienced management,” Hager said. "A business is
only as good as its people, coupled with proven systems and a strong
product.
AUSTIN TURFCATS PRESS CONFERENCE 1 – SOUTHERN INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE
7
"What good is a business model that fails to generate positive cash
flow and forces teams to close their doors after one or two seasons?
This league is designed to satisfy the team owners, players, and the
fans," Hager concluded.
Fans may visit the SIFL temporary web site at www.southernifl.com

professional experience.
SIFL names league staff
November 18, 2008 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
LAKE CHARLES, La. (November 18, 2008) - Southern Indoor
Football League President Thom Hager announced the appointment
of four experienced indoor football executives to launch the
operations of the start-up football league today at a media event
O'Charley's Restaurant here in Lake Charles, La.
Dan J. Blum will serve as Commissioner for the league, Scott
Blanchard as Director of Creative Services, Dan Ryan as Director of
Communications and Robert Winfrey Director of Operations.
All four will operate out of virtual offices to reduce expenditures while
providing invaluable professional experience needed to successfully
launch a professional football league, Hager said.
``In order to birth a successful league, we looked for experience, not
a lot of hype and ego. We looked for those dedicated to this great
sport, not those who are only interested in building their resumes. I'm
thrilled to have these four talented and dedicated professionals on
board,'' Hager continued. ``All four have proven track records."
Blum, who served as commissioner for the Intense Football League
in 2008, brings 44 years of experience in football officiating to the
SIFL.
``Dan has ties at every level of football from college to the NFL", said
Hager. ``He's extremely well respected in the football community
nationwide.''

Manager in 2006 and has an extensive background in collegiate
sports.

defunct World Indoor Football League and on the team level with
three different teams in three different leagues. His bylines have
appeared in the sports sections of the Dallas Morning, the New
Orleans Times-Picayune, the Orlando Sentinel and USA Today. He
has also done game-day production work for NBC and ESPN.
``Indoor football is a sport that goes around in circles. Fortunately, I'm
from Daytona Beach where you learn to make a living off other
people doing that,' Ryan said. ``I'm thankful that the SIFL has given
me another chance to work my communications model and at the
same time, be close to my family.''
Winfrey handled both operations and communications for the Intense
Football League in 2008 after being involved with various teams'
game-day operations the five previous years.
``It feels good to be involved with a quality organization that treats
everyone fairly and with respect,'' Winfrey. ``I'm looking forward to
continuing my professional working relations with many of the
coaches and staffs.''

Austin's SIFL Team Unveils Team Name and Logo
November 25, 2008 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) Austin
Turfcats
Austin - The Southern Indoor Football League team in Austin
announced today that its nickname will be "Turfcats", a powerful
name that will show why the team plays the fastest game on turf. The
Turfcats logo was designed by River City Sportswear from Austin,
Texas in order to promote local business and utilize local artists and
businesses.
The Turfcats will kickoff their home opener in April at the Travis
County Expo Center in Austin, Texas.
"We are excited to share the good news of our team and our
commitment to this community," said team Vice-President/General
Manager Ronald Oswalt.
Austin is the capitol of the state of Texas and the county seat of
Travis County. Situated in Central Texas and it is the fourth-largest
city in Texas and the 16th-largest in the United States of America, as
well as the third fastest growing large city in the nation from 2000 to

2006. As of the 2007 U.S. Census estimate, Austin has a population
of 743,074. The city is the cultural and economic center of the
Greater Austin metropolitan area with a population of about 1.6
million people.
Austin has emerged as a center for technology and business; it was
selected as the No. 1 Best Big City in "Best Places to Live" by Money
magazine in 2006, and the "Greenest City in America" by MSN.
Game uniforms featuring the team nickname (Turfcats) on home
jerseys and city name (Austin) on road uniforms will be unveiled at a
later date. In addition to the distinctive SIFL and individual team logos
embroidered on the uniform.
The team will also focus on the Keep Austin Green theme with the
team's official colors being Armadillo Gold, Recycling Green, and
Natural White.
The Southern Indoor Football League includes teams from Houma
(LA), Houston (TX), Lafayette (LA), Lake Charles (LA), Pasadena
(TX) and the Austin Turfcats (TX).
"We are so honored to have the Austin Market in the inaugural
season of the Southern Indoor Football League," stated SIFL Director
of Operations Robert Winfrey. "When people think of excellence in
football, Austin comes to mind around the country and the Turfcats
will continue in this rich tradition."
SIFL president, staff: Owners need to make wise decisions
LAKE CHARLES, La. (December 22, 2008) - Southern Indoor
Football League President Thom Hager and his staff have released
these statements regarding recent developments in the football
industry, including the Arena Football League's suspension of the
2009 season.
``This is not a time to be comparing business models or using the
demise of another organization to promote your organization's
strengths and positives,'' Hager said. ``As sports executives, we need
to be even more aware that the decisions we make affect a lot of
AUSTIN TURFCATS PRESS CONFERENCE 1 – SOUTHERN INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE
12
LIVLIEHOODS and not just a game on the field. What's the sense of
having a sports team that's a phenomenal success on the field if we
can't take care of EVERYONE who is creating that success and
ensuring that the team has a long and prosperous stay in its
community.''
SIFL commissioner Dan Blum echoed Hager's remarks:
``A sports organization needs to have a firm grasp of what it is today
and what it can become," Blum said. ``Trying to be something you're
not is one of the main reasons we've have so much turmoil and
unnecessary drama in the past.
"The playing field, so to speak, has changed,'' Blum added. ``I think
we need to see what the effect will be in 2009 and we need to
develop strategies for all scenarios for 2010.''
SIFL Director of Communications Dan Ryan has covered the AFL
since 1988.
``I'm angrier about this recent development than some of my other
indoor experiences because in this case, a good thing was frakked up
despite having the necessary resources and as a result, many of my
colleagues have been adversely affected - not only full-time staff and
players, but game-day workers who appreciated and needed that little
extra something,'' Ryan said. ``From a PR perspective, the challenge
is now convincing our audiences that we're a viable investment and
we - and I mean the entire sport of indoor football, not just the SIFL need to do it right because the perception of doom and incompetency
is going to be hard to overcome.''
All agree that they look forward to seeing the AFL return in 2010.
"We've watched this great league grow over the past two decades
and have the highest respect for their owners, management, players,
and staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been
adversely affected by the suspension,'' Hager said. ``The AFL had
become a goal to obtain for all of us toiling in the minors. We'll
continue on in 2009 as a small-market sports entertainment option for
AUSTIN TURFCATS PRESS CONFERENCE 1 – SOUTHERN INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE

our local family and sponsors and look forward to the AFL coming
back the next year.''

Turfcats Adopt-A-School Program
The redesigned Adopt-A-School program is a community initiative
intended to motivate area elementary students through interaction
with Turfcats staff and players. Members of Turfcats team will interact
with designated schools throughout the year.
In addition to providing guidance and leadership to area youths,
Turfcats players will learn first-hand the value of volunteering in the
community. The elementary students can find that learning is fun as
teachers incorporate Turfcats football into class lesson plans (i.e.
using statistics for math assignments, or writing the players for
English work).
Austin Turfcats players correspond throughout the year and ultimately
visit the school. Each school is presented with an Adopt-A-School
poster, identifying it as a current participant in the program.
Additionally, Turfcats publications and prizes are provided for the
school to give out to students who are deemed outstanding
performers. Each school can receive tickets to an indoor/arena
football game, and the entire school is invited to watch the Turfcats
during a practice session.

CO NITY
THE CITY OF AUSTIN
Austin is the capitol of the state of Texas and the county seat of Travis
County. Situated in Central Texas and part of the American Southwest, it is
the fourth-largest city in Texas and the 16th-largest in the United States of
America, as well as the third-fastest growing large city in the nation from
2000 to 2006. As of the 2007 U.S. Census estimate, Austin has a population
of 743,074. The city is the cultural and economic center of the Austin–
Round Rock metropolitan area with a population of about 1.6 million
people.
The area was settled in the 1830s on the banks of the Colorado River by
white settlers, who named the village Waterloo. In 1839, Waterloo was
chosen to become the capital of the newly independent Republic of Texas.
The city was renamed Austin, after Stephen F. Austin. The city grew
throughout the 19th century and became a center for government and
education with the construction of the Texas State Capitol and the University
of Texas. After a lull in growth from the Great Depression, Austin resumed
its development into a major city and emerged as a center for technology and
business. Today, Austin is home to many companies, hi-tech or otherwise,
including two Fortune 500 listed corporations.
Austin was selected as the No. 1 Best Big City in "Best Places to Live" by
Money magazine in 2006, and the "Greenest City in America" by MSN.
Also, according to CNN Headline News and Travel and Leisure Austin
ranks #2 on the list of cities with the best people referring to the
personalities and attributes of the citizens. Austin was also voted America's
#1 College Town by the Travel Channel.
Residents of Austin are known as "Austinites," and include a diverse
mix of university professors, students, politicians, lobbyists,

musicians, state employees, high-tech workers, blue-collar workers,
and white-collar workers. The main campus of the University of Texas
is located in Austin. The city is home to enough large sites of major
technology corporations to have earned it the nickname "Silicon
Hills." Austin's official slogan promotes the city as "The Live Music
Capital of the World", a reference to its status as home to many
musicians and music venues.
In recent years, many Austinites have also adopted the unofficial
slogan "Keep Austin Weird"; this refers partly to the eclectic and
progressive lifestyle of many Austin residents, but is also the slogan
for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses and resist
excessive commercialization.
