Keystone Resort is located in the White River National Forest, just an hour from Denver.
Weather in the Rockies is unpredictable. Even during the summer months, quick drops in temperature are possible. Be
sure to pack a light jacket and plenty of sunscreen. The average daily temperature is 75 degrees during the summer and
the average humidity ranges around 33%. Be prepared for the common afternoon showers that move through the Rocky
Mountains in the summer. Be sure to drink plenty of water during your stay.
Keystone is home to multiple AAA 4 Diamond, Wine Spectator and Zagat Survey-rated restaurants, along with many
dining establishments that are reasonably priced and family friendly. The summit area towns of Dillon and Silverthorne
are only six miles up the road, with additional dining and outlet shopping malls.
Your Mountain Concierge can book most activities. For reservations and information, call 800-354-4FUN (4386).
Casual clothes are the norm for most RMCMI activities. Sunday night’s Welcome reception is nice casual; bring your
jeans and boots for Monday night’s BBQ and barn dance! We hope you relax and have a great time in the beautiful Rocky
Mountains.

110th Annual Meeting & Conference –“The Western Coal Miner: Not an Endangered Species”
Short Course
Sponsored by
Joy Global
Saturday, June 28, 2014
We will offer two separate short courses at this year’s meeting. Our focus this year has been on getting out the message
about the importance of our industry. In getting that message out, we need to be diligent about doing it the right way.
Our first course will address why we should use social media, and the tools for effective messaging.
7:30 a.m. Full Breakfast (Included with morning class)
“Social Media: Policy, Procedure, and Personal Use”
8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Scott Weatherford, Jackson Walker, LLP
Social media is everywhere. And it will continue to become more
prevalent and commonplace in the workplace as companies begin to
recognize its strengths and minimize its limitations. Understanding
the potential danger of social media is just as important as knowing
how to effectively utilize this important tool. This course will provide
an overview of the different formats for social media, outline ways to
use social media effectively, and identify pitfalls to avoid. Don’t let it
pass you by! Embrace the challenge and opportunity that social media presents.
The second course will provide tools for answering questions that are posed to all of us about opposition to coal and
how best to manage those questions in an informed and positive way.
11:30 a.m. Lunch (Included with afternoon class)
“I Once Knew a Coal Miner – The Crisis of Confidence Affecting Coal”
12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Please join Harry W. Rhulen, CEO of Firestorm, and RMCMI member, in a discussion and
interactive exercise to understand how coal mining got the reputation it has, who the enemies are,
what can be done, and how to be a strong advocate for our industry. We will explore the future
of coal by examining the facts, the fictions, the positive and negative PR. We will conduct some
simulation exercises that equip attendees with some tools for handling the hard questions about
coal and other carbon based fuels. to their own organizations to implement a new planning
organization or dramatically improve an existing one.
Social media isn’t a fad; it’s a fundamental shift in the way we communicate. It’s our responsibility to fight the
war on coal with the tools that are being used against us, and to do so in a knowledgeable and effective manner.
What’s included?
Breakfast and lunch included if taking both classes. $200.00 per class or $350 for both.
Course without conference registration $250/each or $450 for both
Course materials • Certificate with professional development credits
Use the registration form in this booklet, or online at www.rmcmi.org.

110th Annual Meeting & Conference –“The Western Coal Miner: Not an Endangered Species”
Mine Rescue
Sponsored by
The North American Coal Corp
Westmoreland Coal
The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute is proud to present the 23th Annual meeting during the 110th RMCMI
Conference. David Evans, Westmoreland Coal Company, and Cheryl Evans, EMR Health and Safety, co-chair the
event. This is an important part of the education mission of RMCMI.
During the 4-day evaluation, approximately 120 mine rescue participants will be engaged in various simulated rescue
scenarios. Surface mines, processing plants, coal handling facilities and power plants all benefit from this event. It
provides an opportunity for family members and mine operators to observe the level of expertise displayed by mine
rescue teams as they engage in staged emergency situations. The mine rescue evaluation program offers training opportunities to all mine teams, including those from other industries such as Solvay Chemicals and gold mining teams from
Nevada. Special hands on classes on respiration, confined space training and creative simulated emergency situations
provide invaluable opportunities for these teams to learn new skills and taken those back to their respective mines.
The Rescue Rodeo, a fun and educational addition to the Mine Rescue Evaluation on Saturday afternoon, takes place
after the 4 hour Technical Session class. The Awards Breakfast Tuesday morning will recognize the teams for the
knowledge they brought to the evaluations, as well as the knowledge they gained both from the evaluators and by
studying other teams.
The Awards Breakfast is open to all package “A” members, as well as the Mine Rescue teams and evaluators. Mine
Rescue family members with a badge, and other members with a ticket, are also welcome to attend.
The Institute encourages you to attend and acknowledge these professionals who will return to their operations confident that they can efficiently and safely handle any emergency situation.

110th Annual Meeting & Conference –“The Western Coal Miner: Not an Endangered Species”
27th Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon
Monday, June 30, 2014
One of the favorite events during the conference is the scholarship awards luncheon where eight
deserving students are presented their scholarship award and have the opportunity to speak to the
group about what the scholarship means to them. This is one of the most rewarding programs
of the Institute. Our Scholarship Co-Chairmen, Curtis Belden and Bob Burnham interview
each student who has submitted an application to narrow it down to our eight Engineering/
Geological awards, $5,500 each over two years, and 8 technical school awards,
who receive $1,000 each toward technical training. To date, the Institute has
awarded over $684,000. The program is possible because of an outstanding
Patrons Program. Clark Moseley, Ambre Energy, is the Patron Chairman. We
sincerely appreciate all donations that make this program possible. The 2014
scholarship winners will be announced in the upcoming conference newsletter.
A special scholarship to honor the memory of Randy Schwandt will be presented at this luncheon.
The scholarship is funded by Atlas Copco and Cate Equipment.
Life Member
Each year the RMCMI Board of Directors considers bestowing a member with the honor of “Life Member”. A member
is chosen based on his/her service to the Institute and to its goals and purposes. “The person who serves – deserves.”
There are years when one or more of our members stand out for having served above and beyond for the benefit of the
Institute. Attend the Scholarship Luncheon to see who will receive this prestigious honor.
Children’s Program
Children are an important part of the annual conference. They must have a badge to attend any of the functions.
