Flashback--The Classic Rock Experience
CONCEPT
“What if…?”
For Rick Bowen, founder and creative director of Flashback--The Classic Rock Experience,
those two little words were the start of a 2-year journey that took him from creative possibility to inspired
opportunity.
With over 30 years experience
in concert production and
promotion, and an awareness
of the growing resurgence in
Classic Rock Music, Bowen
noticed a gap in the eclectic
fare of arena shows. What was
missing? Rock music from the
60’s and 70’s.
Bowen began to ponder:
What if…
Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin
had performed together live on
stage with an orchestra?
Artwork by Ed Unitsky will be featured in logos, licensed merchandise, stage
and production concepts, as well as 3-D images and animations.
What if…
Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors, Three Dog Night and other Classic Rock giants had the
benefit of quadraphonic sound systems and 7 multi-media video screens?
What if…
The best of the best Classic Rock Music was presented in a new way—a way that enhanced the
original structure of the songs by adding richer sounds, intelligent lighting, video animations and
special effects that created an environment in which audiences would not just hear the songs but
experience them?
And What if…
There was a partnering with rock guitarist and musical director Frank Gilcken, and an assembling of
industry experts including promotions manager Lou Dickstein, formerly of Cirque du Soleil and
Rainbow Ticketmasters; and what if lighting and visual effects specialists like Bryan Hartley and
Lorenzo Cornacchia of Pyrotek of Las Vegas came on board in addition to world-renowned Rock
Photographer Carl Dunn and internationally known artist Ed Unitsky; and what if 30 of today’s best
Classic Rock performers were gathered from around the world, performers like vocalists Chuck
Negron, Katrina Chester and Derek St. Holmes, musicians like guitarists Phil Hilborne and Jamie
Humphries, keyboardist Brian Chatton, saxophonist David Boruff, and concert master and violinist
Terry Glenny to name a few; and what if all of that and more was packaged in an arena extravaganza
that came with an affordable ticket price and a demographic appeal to Baby Boomers, Generation X’s
and their kids?
His answer?
Flashback--The Classic Rock Experience
Beginning Fall, 2008

PRODUCTION
Performed by Mystic Orchestra, Flashback—The Classic Rock Experience is a largescale arena production combining 6 truckloads of intelligent lighting with a monumental laser light
show and pyrotechnics display. Licensed vintage video as well as newly produced video and
animations shown on 7 screens around the arena, will accompany live performances by approximately
30 musicians and vocalists, showcasing the music, bands and icons of the 60’s and 70’s Classic Rock
era.
An inflatable 30-foot zeppelin by Skyview housing two 10-foot screens will float tethered below the
scoreboard at mid-audience position in most arenas. A live video camera crew (rovers- fixed- jib units)
will film the band from several different perspectives for layering live band shots over the music
videos from time to time during the performance. The 3 circular stage screens will utilize the latest
27,000k Barco projectors.
DLP2 high-def intelligent
projectors with built in
cameras will show
content on two 30’x 20’
shark-tooth scrim screens
hung over the audience to
complete the video
shows.
Lighting design by
Bryan Hartley will
include an 80-piece (800’
total) main truss light grid
accommodating up to 200
various types of
intelligent moving
computerized programmable light fixtures, floods, spots, studio fills, and gobos. Many will have media
content within the units. Audience blinders, Syncrolite’s Xenon B-52’s, and LED moving tracers will
be just some of the specialty lights included in the show. Additionally, some 400 fixed PARS and 100
PAR multi-colored LED lights will be used.
Approximately 10 low-current colored lasers
(red, green, yellow, orange, and white) with
accompanying scanners and mirrors will be
used giving the effect of 30 or more full- color
laser atmosphere effects all provided by Laser
Design Productions of Las Vegas.
Pyrotek Special Effects Inc. of Las Vegas will provide a
full complement of indoor pyrotechnic effects to be used
for musical numbers closing the first half of the show, the
second half and encore numbers. Dragon tails, multicolor flame effects, waterfalls, confetti cannons, fog and
dry ice machines and snow makers will also be used.
-3-
STAGE AND SOUND
An 80’ x 40’ x 5’ multilevel stage features a 10’ high
center structure to house the
12- piece orchestra. Center
steps will flow down to a 4’
high 8’ x 8’ platform for
soloists to perform. Several
uniquely designed riser
sections will accommodate an
8-10 piece rock band, and
10-12 vocalists.
The set will include three
circular 20’ high illumination
screens, each surrounded by 25
MAC 500 intelligent rear
projected lights.
An EAW QUAD 125,000 watt surround sound system will have four
individual line arrays and eight kf730 dedicated bass enclosures at the front base
of the stage. The bass enclosures will double as support for specialty lighting and
pyro modules. Three individual digital automated moving fader, instant recall
consoles will be used to provide the best sound mixing for front-of-house mix,
recording mix and monitor mix. The latest in Digital Snakes will make three-way
duplexing possible to the three consoles, and all performances will be fully
digitally recorded at each gig. Monitor system will be a fully wireless multichannel in-ear system as will be the triplexed microphone system. Vintage
outboard gear (compressors-limiters- LA2’s LA3’s, DX160’s, Pultecs, Fairchild,
etc.) will be on board to ensure vintage-sounding Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin
bass and drum audio. High quality recording microphones will be used in all
possible applications.

SHOW SYNOPSIS
FIRST HALF
PRE-SHOW
A sparkling lighted LED curtain will be down on three sides of the stage. A 20’x 10’ video screen
shaped like a rearview mirror will be on the front side. A graphic on the bottom center of the screen
reads: “OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR.”
As audience members find their seating, they will be singled out with cameras in the projectors and
flashed onto the mirror screen. This technique has been used in Celine Dion’s show and is very popular
with audiences.
SHOW START- WOODSTOCK SEGMENT
As the house lights come down, a montage of 200-300 five-frame stills of iconic content of the late
60’s will flash on the screen for approximately 90 seconds. Important events of that era will be
covered such as the Vietnam War, Mohammed Ali, moon missions, Woodstock, etc.
Iconic stills will then dissolve into a video with pictures of the Woodstock setting and stage
construction for that event. The caption reads, “Our story begins here August 17, 1969, Woodstock…”
Stills of the Woodstock festival, posters etc., will dissolve into a video interview with Melanie Safka as
she talks about her Woodstock performance and the writing of her song, “Lay Down” (Candles In The
Rain). The song was in the number 1 position on billboard for weeks and essentially became the
anthem for Woodstock
At the end of the Melanie interview, on the downbeat the curtain raises slowly revealing the entire 30member cast singing “Lay Down” (Candles In The Rain). A compilation of stills and video from
Woodstock will accompany the live performance in a very powerful reminder of Rock and Roll’s
emergence into the mainstream in 1969—an historic event that marked the beginning of a new era in
music.
THE DOORS SEGMENT
Approximately 100 individual video and still shots of doors, (such as jail cell doors, the Louvre’s door
in Paris, etc), will be shown in rapid succession with the accompanying sound effects of doors closing.
This will dissolve into a video of stormy seas and the music of The Doors’ hit, “Riders On The
Storm.”
From “Rider’s On The Storm” we move to another classic hit from The Doors, “Light My Fire.”
Pyrotechnics, flame cannons and 20’ multi-colored twisters of propane flames will end this number.
JANIS JOPLIN SEGMENT
Vintage video of Mercedes automobiles will accompany a solo accappella performance of Janis
Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz.” After Janis says, “that’s all,” we move to “Piece Of My Heart,” followed
by Joplin’s rendition of Kris Kristopherson’s “Me And Bobby McGee.”
The final song in the Joplin segment, “Ball And Chain,” is probably the most dynamic. The band and
orchestra will be stopped and started throughout the song at the whim of the lead vocalist.
SHOW SYNOPSIS
JIMI HENDRIX SEGMENT
“All Along The Watchtower“ opens this segment followed by “Purple Haze.” Concertmaster Terry
Glenny on his incredible 5-string violin will double the famous guitar licks in this number. Terry will
wear a red bandana like Hendrix as he challenges the three guitarists for musical dominance. Bryan
Hartley will create interesting atmospheric features with the lighting and our videos will reflect the
“Purple Haze” era
“Foxy Lady” is the next Hendrix classic to be performed followed by “Fire.” A full complement of
pyrotechnic effects will accent the band each time they sing “let me get next to your fire!”
Rod Stewart’s hit “Maggie May” will end this segment. Perhaps the biggest radio hit of that age, it
rewrote the “Rock vs. Pop” record books in 1972, propelling Stewart of The Faces into solo stardom.
The accompanying video will reenact the story with vintage shots of Stewart’s live concert
performances.
THREE DOG NIGHT SEGMENT
Chuck Negron’s famous vocals will lead in this segment beginning with Three Dog Night’s hit “One’”
Derek St. Holmes and Jose Manzano will accompany Negron on three part harmonies.
Hoyt Axton’s early 70’s mega-hit “Joy To The World” follows. An inflatable “Jeremiah Bullfrog”
will float above the audience accompanied by bullfrog video. “Celebrate” rounds off the Three Dog
Night set.
THE POP SEGMENT
“Smoke On The Water,” Deep Purple’s classic hit about a gambling casino burning down, will open
the Pop segment with an accompanying video detailing the story of the casino and the history of the
song.
“Born To Be Wild, “ Steppenwolf’s anthem about independence and freedom in the 70’s is about as
American as it gets. Accompanying video will be set around the classic film “Easy Rider,” featuring
Harleys, hogs, Daytona’s bike week, and motorcycles in general.
“Layla,” Eric Clapton’s epic hit about his lust and obsession with George Harrison’s wife will be
accompanied by a video depicting the Indian mythological origins of “Layla” from which Clapton
drew to write the lyrics for this incredible song.
“Dressing Room Suites-Bow To The King” follows as a power tribute to Mohammed Ali and his
career as the world’s number one boxer, athlete, outspoken advocate of black rights, and three time
World Heavy Weight boxing champion. The video details his life from a young man in Louisville,
Kentucky to his run for the championships and now his fight for life with a crippling disease. We show
his triumphs, a memorial to his life, his museum in Louisville, and his victorious lighting of the torch
at the Atlanta Olympics in 1998. Probably the most moving of all the videos we have done, this
number closes the first half of the show with a flurry of pyro at the end of the Olympic torch lighting.
INTERMISSION 15-20 MINUTES

SHOW SYNOPSIS (Cont.)
SECOND HALF
PINK FLOYD AND LED ZEPPELIN SEGMENT
Pink Floyd’s “Signs Of Life “ opens the second half as an intro to “Learning To Fly.” Producer Bob
Ezrin played keyboards on this piece. The video will start with artist Ed Unitsky’s animated renderings
of Rock and Roll’s definitive guitars (Telecasters, Strats, Les Pauls, etc) as embryonic bubbles floating
in from the heavens. Microscope views are included with images of the guitars growing and morphing
into the full bore size of blasting instruments that have made Rock and Roll what it is today. Pink floyd
would probably have the guitars marching off in parade as they did with the famous hammers in some
of their early videos.
“Learning To Fly” is probably the most popular piece from the second album (Momentary Lapse Of
Reason) after Roger Waters left the band. Gilmour and company wrote this classic about flying and
preparing for flying. Their video showed an Indian with a feather in his hat jumping off a cliff. Our
video will feature Ed Unitsky’s famous artwork. Animated shots of Unitsky’s core drawings “Pyramid
Man,” depicting thoughts and fragments leaving the mind, will swirl around the arena in our 3-D
videos of these incredible images. This will be one of the most spectacular video treatments in the
show.
Pink Floyd’s radio hit “Money,” from Dark Side Of The Moon, perhaps the most popular classic rock
album of all time, will following in this segment. Along with the performance, the video will
intersperse vintage footage with modern commerce scenes such as Wall Street, the US Mint, and other
related money topics.
Accompanying video of this next classic tune, “Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2,” will feature the
classic struggle between a mean spirited teacher and a defiant class who collectively retort, “We don’t
need no education!” A possible Floyd-type inflatable is being considered.
One of the best songs ever written by Pink Floyd, “Hey You,” will be accompanied by video
depicting lovers separated by distance. A possible tie-in to overseas armed services personnel is being
considered.
“Wish You Were Here” (optional song) no video proposed as of yet.
“Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” also one of Pink Floyd’s best songs, is about the founder of the
band, Syd Barrett, who died in July 2007. A tribute to his life, the accompanying video will include his
genius in forming the band and furnishing it with the core values of the world’s most popular rock
group.
“Great Gig In The Sky,” the second of our most poignant videos, is a tribute to those who lost their
lives as well as those who suffered through the 9-11 tragedy.
“Whole Lot Of Love” Storyboard for Led Zeppelin’s classic hit is under construction.
The video for “Kashmir,” Zeppelin’s most favorite song, will revolve around the Kashmir area of the
world depicting all the strange instruments such as hurdi-gurdis, lutes, flutes, castanets, etc. Storyboard
under construction.
“Comfortably Numb,” Floyd’s most popular anthem, will feature a solo by each of our top
instrumentalists in this massive finish to the Pink Floyd era.
- 15 -
SHOW SYNOPSIS (Cont.)
SECOND HALF FINALE
Both the video and musical arrangement of “Stairway To Heaven” are produced as if Pink Floyd and
Led Zeppelin had performed this song together live. The bands never played together so this is a
depiction of how it might have been. Featuring lots of vintage footage from both bands, Jose Manzano
lends his phenomenal vocals to our rendition of rock’s most popular song. This is the highlight and
finale of the show’s second half, ending with video of a space shuttle launch as “she is buying a
Stairway to Heaven.” This is a big pyro, lasers and effects production much as the last of a fireworks
display. Aerialists and /or bungi acts similar to Cirque du Soleil are being considered for the finale.
END OF REGULAR SHOW
ENCORES:
Encore 1: Performed by the full cast, Pachelbel’s famous “Cannon In D” is “rockanized” in this
incredible version of the world’s most popular piece of Classical music.
Encore 2: Handel’s most famous work, “Messiah Hallelujah Chorus,” will be also “rockanized” and
performed by the full cast. Lyrics will be on video screens prompting the audience to sing along. This
final production piece of the night will include huge pyro, laser, and atmospheric effects leaving the
audience spellbound.
