Touching Lives... Making a Difference
The Jewish Caring Network (JCN), is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization
dedicated to bringing joy and comfort by providing a full range of support
services to Jewish families facing life-theatening, lifelong, and serious
illnesses while preserving their privacy and dignity. The Tikva House is an
extension of this mission.
History
The Jewish Caring Network was founded in 1996 by Chaya Drabkin and
Keren Traub when a member of the Baltimore Jewish community was
diagnosed with cancer. The community sprang into action, providing the
family with support and meals. The need to organize and form a “clearinghouse” for these offers of help became apparent, and the Jewish Caring
Network was formed.

bypass surgery and I wanted to be close
to him. The hospital only allows one
person to stay overnight.
Without the Tikva House, I would have
had to stay home alone on Shabbat,
wondering how my father was and
fearing for the worst.
You gave me peace, you gave me the
opportunity to be with my father,
something I will never, ever forget.”

In 2012, under the direction of Stacey Goldenberg, the JCN opened the
Tikva House, a comfortable home-away-from-home for Jewish families
caring for a loved one receiving medical treatment at The Johns Hopkins
Hospital. Since opening, families from Baltimore and around the world
have benefited from the Tikva House on Shabbat
and on a daily basis.

We brought our kids with
us to the Tikva House and
it made such a difference
for them to be with us. We
were able to take our son
out of the hospital just for
Friday night, and be with
the family. We got a security
guard to take him back
in his wheelchair with us.
You could literally see their
moods improving. It was
because we were able to
be together over Shabbos.
Everyone was rejuvenated
and able to handle things
again. I cannot imagine
what we would have done
without the Tikva House.

“My first husband, Rabbi Ervin Preis, was
very seriously ill for over four years requiring
many lengthy in-patient procedures at
Johns Hopkins Hospital. It was necessary
that I be at his bedside as much as possible.
When feasible, I slept in his room, but
there were many occasions when this
was not permitted (he was in ICU). On
those occasions, I imposed on some of my
physician friends to use their office floor or
I slept in the lobby
on an inflated
air mattress
