Lost in Storyland
with the Village Puppeteers
Friday, April 22
3:45pm—Snack • 4:00pm—Puppet Show
Those who think puppet shows are for babies had better guess again. In a raucous comic romp,
internationally acclaimed puppeteers riff on classic fairy tale characters. This is a show perfect
for school aged children, with plenty of humor for adults.

of the mandala to awaken cultural awareness
and personal growth.
In this workshop you will experience a
method that will teach meditation, patience,
self-discovery, and the act of embracing
impermanence (letting go).
This two part series was made
possible through a partnership with
North Central Michigan College.
Letter from the Director
2
I’m feeling like a “goal digger” right now. Throughout the spring and summer the
library will conduct a strategic planning process. We will be working with Kimberly
Bolan and Associates, an organization known for its understanding of library services
and expertise on future library trends. Their goal is to “help libraries survive and
thrive in an environment of constant change.”
Our goal is to look at what have we done in the past, evaluate how effective we’ve been and identify how we can
do things better. We will start digging…looking at our own data and data from the community. We’ll look at our
community’s strengths and weaknesses to help us define opportunities for growth and collaboration.
Once an initial data analysis is done, we will come to you to dig some more. We will be asking people to take part
in community forums and an online survey. In these sessions you will learn what the future of libraries might look
like and we will ask for your ideas on what this library should do to move forward.
Open Forums will be held the evenings of Tuesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 2 at 6:30 pm in the community
rooms. Another session will be added in June for our summer residents. All sessions are open to the public and we
invite you to join in. We want to know what you think. If you have ideas you want to share, this is the time. The
information shared in the community forums and from the survey will help our planning team define our future
goals and the methods we use to meet those goals.
Please complete the online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/charlevoixpl
The Charlevoix Public Library prides itself on being a leader of library services in Northern Michigan. We set a
standard when we opened this facility in 2006. As we enter our tenth year in this facility, we will continue to listen
to your needs, provide the collections and services you want, and be the “living room” of the community.
Looking forward to hearing what you think,
Linda Adams, Director

BookTalkers Discussion Group
The Sixth Extinction: Monday, March 21, 6 pm
Awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2015, this book by New Yorker staff writer Elizabeth
Kolbert blends intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a
compelling account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes. Over the
last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity
of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the
world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most
devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the
dinosaurs. This time around, the cataclysm is us.
The Painter: Monday, April 18, 6 pm
He was doing so well at keeping the rage at bay until he found the man beating a
small horse. Now noted expressionist painter Jim Stegner cannot stop himself
from making the locally infamous hunting outfitter pay...with his life. After
killing the man, Jim seeks elusive peace as the cops, the murdered man's
vengeful clan, and Jim's own conscience plot against him. Throughout it all, Jim
never stops painting. Author Peter Heller explores the mysteries of the human
heart and creates an indelible portrait of a man searching for peace, while
seeking to maintain his humanity in the face of violence and injustice.
The Turner House: Monday, May 16, 6 pm
The Turner family has lived on Yarrow Street for more than 50 years. Their
neighborhood on Detroit's East Side has fallen into disrepair and the mortgage
on the family home is under water. The patriarch has long been dead, and Viola,
the matriarch, is ill and has moved in with her oldest son, who feels the full
burden of being both father and brother to his 12 siblings. And the siblings are
having a vehement argument about whether to sell their family home or pay off
the mortgage. This debut novel by Angela Flournoy is a 2016 Michigan Notable
Book selection.
Looking Ahead: Monday, June 20, 6 pm
Quiet: The Power of Introverts by Susan Cain
