Classroom, & Business/Organizations
Pick up your “Scarecrow Kit” at the library in the
youth department Sept. 19-30.
Make a traditional scarecrow or be as humorous
and creative as you want.
Entrees must be submitted between October 1—7. Judging will take place October 10.
Scarecrows will remain at the library on display from October 8-25.
The library’s many data bases have great information
that normally require a fee when utilizing an internet
search. Databases (as compared to websites) are unique
in that the information is researched and trusted. Two
that we subscribe to are very handy to know about:
Legal Forms and Chilton’s Automotive Repair. These,
and all the databases that we subscribe to, are offered
at no charge to our patrons.
Legal Forms is the place to go whenever you need a basic legal document.
Forms available include landlord/tenant agreements, wills, power of attorney,
divorce, real estate, etc. All of the forms are state specific and can be
downloaded, filled in, saved, and then printed.

Once Upon a River: Monday, September 12, 6 PM
To the ranks of memorable literary heroines add the name of Margo Crane , the protagonist of
Bonnie Jo Campbell's passionate new novel. Beautiful, strong, and quiet, Margo is a hunter and
a sharpshooter who worships Annie Oakley. Abandoned by her self-indulgent mother, Margo
turns to her extended family across the Stark River in rural Michigan, but her uncle Cal is rapaciously lustful, and things turn violent. Equipped with ammunition, food, her father's ashes, and
an envelope with her mother's return address, she takes her grandfather's boat downstream,
determined to find her mother and to save herself. This book by an award-winning Michigan
author is sure to generate lively discussion.
The Magician’s Nephew: Monday, October 17, 6 PM
Step into the magic of Narnia through this classic story of British schoolchildren Polly and Di-
gory, who inadvertently tumble into the Wood Between the Worlds, where they meet the evil
Queen Jadis and, ultimately, the great, mysterious King Aslan. This 6th book in “The Chronicles of Narnia” is in fact the prequel to the C. S. Lewis beloved “The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe”. In it we witness the birth of Narnia and discover the legendary source of all the
adventures that are to follow in the seven books that comprise the series. The magic of C. S.
Lewis's parallel universe never fades, and this book can be read on many levels, by children and
adults alike. (This book discussion is offered as part of the annual
C. S. Lewis Festival).
Unbroken: a World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption: Monday, November 14, 6 PM
From the 1936 Olympics to WWII Japan's most brutal POW camps, comes Laura Hillenbrand’s
true, inspiring story of Louie Zamperini, a man who lived through a series of catastrophes almost
too incredible to be believed. A juvenile delinquent turned Olympic runner, Zamperini was an
army air force bombardier in 1941when his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean. After weeks
adrift on a raft, he was captured by the Japanese and survived 5 years of torture and starvation in
labor camps. This enthralling book is a celebration of the human spirit and an extraordinary man.
Looking Ahead: BookTalkers will meet December 12 to discuss “2030” by Albert Brooks.
For information about the book discussions, contact the Information Services Desk: 237-7340
Discussion guides for all featured books are available on our website or at the Information Services Desk.
Letter from Director continued:
The Chilton’s Automotive Repair data base is the one stop to take whenever servicing or repairing automobiles.
The database extends as far back as 1940 through the current model year. It includes information on repairs,
servicing the vehicle, and recall information. All this is available with a few mouse clicks and a print.
Volume 10, Issue 4
Both the Legal Forms and the Chilton’s data bases are available through our website at no charge to patrons at
the Charlevoix Library. The data bases can also be accessed through your home computer, but may need your
library card number to authenticate. To access the databases, go to our home page at www.charlevoixlibrary.org,
click on the research menu, then databases, then scroll down to find the one you are looking for. You may even
bump into another library database that you will find useful! For more information about our available databases,
or for help finding or using them, contact the Information Services Desk at 231-237-7340.
