Ca All Twin Cities Knitters
and Crocheters!
Chemo Hats and Shawls Needed
For Gilda’s Club Twin Cities
“On behalf of GCTC, the First Thursdays
Knitting Club, a local knitting group
founded by Mary Taylor, Renay Leone,
Eva Stevens and Kim Bowden, is reaching
out to Twin Cities knitters for their help in
making chemo caps and shawls.”
Gilda’s Club, an organization named in memory of comedian
Gilda Radner, who died from ovarian cancer in 1989, is a network of affiliate
clubhouses throughout the US and Canada where “members” – men, women
and children living with cancer, as well as friends and families – learn how to live
with cancer.
Gilda’s Club support is an essential component to medical care.
Fundamental to the Gilda’s Club philosophy is that membership is completely
free of charge. The clubhouse, while non-residential, offers a warm, welcoming
home-like atmosphere where members can relax and feel comfortable in a nonmedical, non-institutional setting.
The Gilda’s Clubs innovative, one-of-a-kind program offers support groups,
workshops and social activities, including a special space called “Noogieland” for
children with cancer or who have a family member with cancer. These are just
a few of the day-to-day resources that are available at the clubhouse for those
living with cancer and those whose lives are touched by cancer.
The first Gilda’s Club opened in New York City in 1995. Today, 21 clubhouses
are operating across the world, in both large and small cities. Our local affiliate,
Gilda’s Club Twin Cities, is striving to open its doors in 2010. For more information
on this amazing organization and how our efforts can contribute to the first
Gilda’s Club in Minnesota, check out the Gilda’s Club Twin Cities website at
www.gildasclubtwincities.org.
When Gilda’s Club Twin Cities opens it would be wonderful to have a supply
of handmade chemo hats and shawls ready for the club’s variety of members
– men, women and children. Twin Cities knitters are well known for their
generosity and willingness to pick up their needles for a very good cause!
As a special treat to get you started, Nicky Epstein, the world-famous
knitting designer, has designed an original chemo hat pattern for us to use!
For other ideas on what to knit, here is a handy list of web links to other free
patterns for shawls and chemo caps, but you can use any pattern you wish. We
only ask that the knits be made out of non-scratchy yarns and preferably easycare. Your local yarn store can help you find just the right yarn to use.
