programs for at-risk youths,

treatment, foster care and

am honored to present to you the 2014 Annual Report for DePelchin Children’s Center.
As you will see, your generosity has made a difference in the lives of more than 25,000
children across the State of Texas.
Every day, DePelchin is turning lives around with comprehensive and compassionate care for
children. From counseling and psychiatry for children struggling with emotional and behavioral
issues to finding loving families for children removed from abusive homes, we are realizing our
vision of a world in which every child is safe and healthy – one child at a time.
Kezia Payne DePelchin, our founder, would be amazed to see how her little ‘Faith Home’ has
evolved into the leading center in Texas for children’s well-being, with locations throughout the
Greater Houston area in addition to Austin, Brownwood, Lubbock and San Antonio. She would
also be pleased to see how her ‘faith in the good people of Houston’ has enabled DePelchin’s
phenomenal success and growth. The realization of her dream in 1892 would not have been
possible without committed donors and volunteers such as you.
A few highlights from 2014 that you helped make possible include:
• opening of a home for young adults, ages 18-22, who have aged out of foster care
and are at risk of becoming homeless;
• unveiling of the Maconda Brown O’Connor Training Institute with the inaugural
trauma-informed care conference for community professionals;
• launch of the city-wide mental health campaign Heal Young Minds to get people
talking about children’s mental health and help reduce stigma; and
• a record number of adoptions with 190 children welcomed into forever families.

MENTAL HEALTH
DePelchin believes that a child’s mental health is just as important as his or her physical
health. Recognized as a leader in the field of children’s mental health, DePelchin supports
children and families struggling with behavioral or emotional issues. Through our expert
team of psychiatrists, psychologists and counselors, we provide comprehensive care
for a broad range of concerns, including ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety,
depression and trauma.

FOSTER CARE AND RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT
DePelchin believes every child deserves a safe, loving home. Through its foster care
program, DePelchin partners with couples and individuals who can provide temporary
care for children removed from their birth families because of abuse or neglect.
DePelchin offers a range of services to support its foster families, including training
in trauma-informed care, therapeutic counseling and 24-hour crisis intervention.
In addition, DePelchin provides residential treatment for children ages 5-12 years
who need specialized, intensive care.

ADOPTION AND POST-ADOPTION
DePelchin believes every child deserves a forever family. Through its adoption programs,
DePelchin supports couples and individuals wanting to adopt children who are in the
foster care system in addition to those wanting to adopt infants through its private infant
adoption program. DePelchin also offers post-adoption services to help strengthen and
preserve families and support individuals seeking to reconnect with an adopted child or
a biological family member.

PREVENTION AND EDUCATION
Complementing its work in children’s mental health, foster care and adoption, DePelchin
offers prevention and education programs to decrease the future need for more intensive
services and promote healthy families. DePelchin’s prevention/early intervention services
target issues such as family conflict, alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse, bullying and
school drop-out. Through its parent education classes, DePelchin helps parents build
and maintain healthy relationships with their children and work through family challenges
such as conflict and divorce.
