Facelift
Over the last few months, WCTE has partnered with
TTU’s Business Media Center to give our website a
facelift. So what’s in it for you?
1. Do you want to know
what’s on?
You can find a TV schedule for the programs
on all 3 of our channels. If you want details
on the show, click on the show title.
2. Do you have a community
event you want to promote
or do you want to see what’s
going on in the community?
The WCTE website contains a community
events calendar where you can make
submissions or just see what’s happening.
3. Do you want local
program and entertainment
news?
6 | WCTE Close-Up
Check out the rotating stories on the home
page – check back, it is always changing.
4. Do you want to watch
local programs you’ve
missed?
The site contains an archive of programs,
from Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s to the
Tennessee Sportsman and more.
5. Do you want to
go shopping for PBS
products?
Do you know a PBS fan that would
appreciate a DVD series or program? For
every gift or DVD you purchase from
PBS using the WCTE site as a gateway,
the station receives a small portion of the
proceeds.
There’s so much more. Find out about
WCTE’s initiatives like the Live Green &
Prosper Initiative and get live green tips.
Check out the Komen Reach Project, enter
contests, read Becky’s Blog. Download this
magazine. You can even make a donation
and become a member.
Or join our Facebook page from the
website. As the site’s original creator, Mark
Shuart (infinityforward.com), said, “Social
networks like Facebook have enabled a new
level of engagement with the community
that goes beyond the TV screen.”
Which means that you can receive the
latest news from WCTE AND let the station
know your thoughts about the programs we
present.

involvement in the
transformation of WCTE’s
site began in the Fall of
2010. Due to the amount of content,
which is always changing, it was a
massive undertaking.
“The goal of the project,”
commented intern Kallie Haley, ”was
to transform WCTE’s old website into
a new, up-to-date, more user-friendly
website.”
“We tried to strive for flexibility,”

of the local programming or just
communicating with the public using
Facebook.”
Michael was also surprised at how
big the Great TV Auction is, and
about having to place almost 800
individual items in one day that were
donated by the community.
“It is obvious to me that WCTE,
and PBS as a whole, means a great
deal to the American public, which
makes me even prouder to be part of
this project.”

said intern Mack Lunn. “WCTE
is as dynamic as its programs and
sponsors, so we needed to ensure that
everything would remain up-to-date.
The website should allow anyone to
make updates as easily as they would
maintain a personal Facebook page.”
What surprised Businesss Media

WCTE for my own child.
I earned my Bachelors Degree in English and
Communications in 2010 from TTU and began working with
WCTE in November as a Sales Assistant. Beginning with
administrative tasks within the Sales Department, I have also
had the privilege of working with the Production Department as
a liaison with the Development Team. Recently, I was thrilled to
be promoted to the position of Membership Manager.
During these transitions, I have seen that every department
relies on the other to bring the wonderful programs and
community events to you, our viewers. I am proud to be part of
this team – they truly care about our communities in the Upper
Cumberland - and I encourage you to invest in your local station.
For as little as $35, you can become a member of WCTE. For

Avery Owens
Sales Manager
BY HIPPIE JACK
Avery Stoddart Owens was born
on the Plateau and after several
years working in marketing
and sales in Nashville, she
has returned to the Upper
Cumberland to head up the
sales department at WCTE.
As the oldest child in the Stoddart family, she led the way.
Swimming in the creek, riding horses, helping in the garden
or splitting wood for fires were just a few of the activities that
surrounded her childhood and shaped her as an adult.
Her business degree (from TTU), coupled with a family
background in the creative arts, has served her well through
the years. Her ability to gain perspective through her many
experiences permeates all she does.
From the early years when, to the dismay of some, she
played Senior League baseball with the boys, to the present
time, Avery has relied on a natural intuition coupled with a very
creative nature to leave her mark everywhere she goes. It is
her nature to look beyond the moment and build sustainable
relationships in pursuit of personal goals.
Failure has never been an option.
If you would like to find out about advertising with WCTE,
Avery would love to hear from you. You can reach her at
[email protected], or 931.528.2222, x 220. For an example of
the rates, please see p.20.

football fan and he gave Ray a $5 discount
on their rent. He was also the curator that
hired Ramola to reproduce the documents
and he paid her $75/month for her work.
“So that,” said Ramola, “took care of
the rent.”
After 3 years Ray “got tired of the sand in
his shoes” and they moved back to Tennessee
where they had two children – Alan and
Sally. Ray was hired by Tennessee Tech to
be a Defensive Coach and they raised their
family in Cookeville.
Ramola started subbing at Tech for her
friend Reba Bacon who was having health
problems. She continued to teach part-time
at TTU for the next 37 years in courses
ranging from art appreciation and pen and
ink, painting, pencil drawing and pastels,
to teaching future teachers how to teach art
to their students. She also became involved
with the Cumberland Art Society and can be
found there every Thursday, teaching seniors
in a studio named after her.
When WCTE started selling an art board
at the Great TV Auction over 25 years ago,
Ramola volunteered to help out. She’s been
helping ever since.

To date, WCTE has located, identified,
inventoried, and delivered 4000 existing
television shows produced by WCTE to
the American Archive Content Inventory
Project database. The oldest asset found
thus far is the 1975 Smithville Fiddlers’
Jamboree. Other assets include Tennessee
Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball
games and several hundred TTU Golden
Eagle football games. Additionally, the
staff has inventoried several years of a
series of news/magazine programs called
the Upper Cumberland Camera, which
highlights our beautiful region.
As WCTE’s manager for the project,
I am pleased to be part of CPB’s and
WGBH’s American Archive Content
Inventory Project and I hope for future
funding to complete a digitization of the
inventoried items for further preservation
and presentation of the priceless historical
footage that tells the stories, and showcases
the lives and the communities that
developed here in the Upper Cumberland
region of Middle Tennessee.

What does an honest cop do when his bosses are on the side of

and run-of-the-mill kidnappers and killers, Detective Aurelio
Zen brings justice to modern-day Italy, whether the authorities
want it or not... on ZEN, a trio of spellbinding cases based on

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW’s stop in Grand Rapids
includes a detour to the Holland Museum in Holland,
Michigan — and a nod to Western Michigan’s Dutch
roots — for a look at Delft tiles through the centuries.
Highlights include a rare Stickley music cabinet designed
by Harvey Ellis; a painting by French artist Edouard Cortes
that’s authenticated in a very enlightening way; and a pair of
prop spears used in the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz,
estimated to be worth $30,000.
Good news for the Upper Cumberland.

HISTORY DETECTIVES

This x-ray shows this doll’s head is hollow. Family
legend says during the Civil War they stowed medicine
inside the doll’s head and had a young girl carry the doll
through the Northern blockade.
The mystery behind a camera takes Wes to the White
House pressroom. And, what does this 15th century map,
with a mix of French, English and Spanish labels, tell us
about how Europe colonized Florida?
