You can even make a donation and become a member. Or join our Facebook page from the website. As the site’s original creator, Mark Shuart (infinityforward.com), said, “Social networks like Facebook have enabled a new level of engagement with the community that goes beyond the TV screen.” Which means that you can receive the latest news from WCTE AND let the station know your thoughts about the programs we present. new faces Sonja Higgenbotham Membership Manager M Growing up in the area and being the child of educators, I remember watching WCTE as a child. Sesame Street and Electric Company were my favorites. Since then, I have passed the torch as a mother and turned on The TTU Business Media Center team that are working on the WCTE website. L-R Manager Michael Aikens, intern Mack Lunn, intern Kallie Haley and Director Kevin Liska Transforming Our Website TTU’s Business Media Center T he Media Center’s involvement in the transformation of WCTE’s site began in the Fall of 2010. Due to the amount of content, which is always changing, it was a massive undertaking. “The goal of the project,” commented intern Kallie Haley, ”was to transform WCTE’s old website into a new, up-to-date, more user-friendly website.” “We tried to strive for flexibility,” “ of the local programming or just communicating with the public using Facebook.” Michael was also surprised at how big the Great TV Auction is, and about having to place almost 800 individual items in one day that were donated by the community. “It is obvious to me that WCTE, and PBS as a whole, means a great deal to the American public, which makes me even prouder to be part of this project.” It is obvious to me that WCTE, and PBS as a whole, means a great deal to the American public, which makes me even prouder to be part of this project. M I C H A E L A I K E N S | BUSINESS MEDIA CENTER MANAGER said intern Mack Lunn. “WCTE is as dynamic as its programs and sponsors, so we needed to ensure that everything would remain up-to-date. The website should allow anyone to make updates as easily as they would maintain a personal Facebook page.” What surprised Businesss Media Center Manager Michael Aikens the most was the depth of everything that WCTE offers the community, “whether it be the 3 channels of programming, the amount an quality ” For more information or to contact TTU’s Business Media Center, http://www.ttubusiness.com/ E-mail: [email protected] *Our partnership with the TTU Business Media Center would not have been possible without the generous support of Ms. Julia Boyd, whose donation allowed the Media Center to hire two interns to work on our website facelift project. Thank you so much, Julia. WCTE for my own child. I earned my Bachelors Degree in English and Communications in 2010 from TTU and began working with WCTE in November as a Sales Assistant. Beginning with administrative tasks within the Sales Department, I have also had the privilege of working with the Production Department as a liaison with the Development Team. Recently, I was thrilled to be promoted to the position of Membership Manager. During these transitions, I have seen that every department relies on the other to bring the wonderful programs and community events to you, our viewers. I am proud to be part of this team – they truly care about our communities in the Upper Cumberland - and I encourage you to invest in your local station. For as little as $35, you can become a member of WCTE. For more information, contact Sonja at [email protected], or call her at 931.528.2222, x 215. Avery Owens Sales Manager BY HIPPIE JACK Avery Stoddart Owens was born on the Plateau and after several years working in marketing and sales in Nashville, she has returned to the Upper Cumberland to head up the sales department at WCTE. As the oldest child in the Stoddart family, she led the way. Swimming in the creek, riding horses, helping in the garden or splitting wood for fires were just a few of the activities that surrounded her childhood and shaped her as an adult. Her business degree (from TTU), coupled with a family background in the creative arts, has served her well through the years. Her ability to gain perspective through her many experiences permeates all she does. From the early years when, to the dismay of some, she played Senior League baseball with the boys, to the present time, Avery has relied on a natural intuition coupled with a very creative nature to leave her mark everywhere she goes. It is her nature to look beyond the moment and build sustainable relationships in pursuit of personal goals. Failure has never been an option. If you would like to find out about advertising with WCTE, Avery would love to hear from you. You can reach her at [email protected], or 931.528.2222, x 220. For an example of the rates, please see p.20. July/August 2011 | 7 spotlight on maps from the 1400’s. Their landlord was a football fan and he gave Ray a $5 discount on their rent. He was also the curator that hired Ramola to reproduce the documents and he paid her $75/month for her work. “So that,” said Ramola, “took care of the rent.” After 3 years Ray “got tired of the sand in his shoes” and they moved back to Tennessee where they had two children – Alan and Sally. Ray was hired by Tennessee Tech to be a Defensive Coach and they raised their family in Cookeville. Ramola started subbing at Tech for her friend Reba Bacon who was having health problems. She continued to teach part-time at TTU for the next 37 years in courses ranging from art appreciation and pen and ink, painting, pencil drawing and pastels, to teaching future teachers how to teach art to their students. She also became involved with the Cumberland Art Society and can be found there every Thursday, teaching seniors in a studio named after her. When WCTE started selling an art board at the Great TV Auction over 25 years ago, Ramola volunteered to help out. She’s been helping ever since. Ramola Drost Longtime Great TV Auction volunteer Ramola Drost is a staunch supporter of the arts and local public television. O n June 12th, the last night of the Great TV Auction, Ramola Drost was kidnapped from her traditional spot behind the Art Board and escorted to the stage. Under the hot lights and in front of the TV cameras, she smiled as the WCTE staff and Auction volunteers sang Happy Birthday to her in honor of her 90th birthday. “No, not 90,” Ramola said. “I prefer to think of myself as 30… times 3.” Born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1921, Ramola’s family moved to Tennessee in the late 20’s when her Dad found a good job in Knoxville. To date, WCTE has located, identified, inventoried, and delivered 4000 existing television shows produced by WCTE to the American Archive Content Inventory Project database. The oldest asset found thus far is the 1975 Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree. Other assets include Tennessee Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball games and several hundred TTU Golden Eagle football games. Additionally, the staff has inventoried several years of a series of news/magazine programs called the Upper Cumberland Camera, which highlights our beautiful region. As WCTE’s manager for the project, I am pleased to be part of CPB’s and WGBH’s American Archive Content Inventory Project and I hope for future funding to complete a digitization of the inventoried items for further preservation and presentation of the priceless historical footage that tells the stories, and showcases the lives and the communities that developed here in the Upper Cumberland region of Middle Tennessee. 3:00 PM Arthur 3:30 PM Wordgirl 8:30 AM Dinosaur Train 4:00 PM Electric Company 9:00 AM Sesame Street 4:30 PM Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman 10:00 AM Clifford 5:00 PM Cyberchase/ 10:30 AM Word World The Watson Brown Show (Mon.) 11:00 AM Between the Lions 11:30 AM Barney & Friends 5:30 PM The Nightly Business Report 12:00 PM Caillou 6:00 PM PBS Newshour Saturdays 5:00 AM Mister Roger’s Neighborhood 12:30 PM This Old House 5:30 AM Bob the Builder 1:00 PM Ask This Old House 6:00 AM Curious George 1:30 PM My Generation NEW! 6:30 AM Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That 2:00 PM Inside E Street NEW! 7:00 AM Super Why he television and radio archives of American public media are scattered throughout the nation. In January 2011, the Content Inventory Project Manager – WGBH – in cooperation with CPB, invited public broadcasting television and radio stations to apply for grants to conduct an inventory of video and audio assets and participate in the important and historic American Archive Initiative.
