LET US PRAY
LILLIAN ROSE AND RACHEL
Yesterday marked the 10 year anniversary
of the deaths in tragic circumstances of a
former Saint Augustine’s teacher, Rachel
Entwistle, and her daughter, Lillian Rose.
Prayers have been said in school in their
memory.
Love Lives On
Those we love remain with us
for love itself lives on,
and cherished memories never fade
because a loved one's gone.
Those we love can never be
more than a thought apart,
for as long as there is memory,
they'll live on in the heart.
Amen.
Eternal Rest, Grant unto them O Lord
May Your perpetual life shine upon
them and may they rest in peace
Amen

Dear Parents/Carers
DIAMOND BUS
It is with great disappointment that I have
to report that once again there was an
issue with the S75 Diamond Bus service
on Tuesday this week. I can only apologise upon Diamond’s behalf that students
were subject to a badly managed
situation by the driver of the bus on that
evening as it drove students away from
Saint Augustine‘s. Both Diamond and the
County Council have been contacted
about the incident. We still endeavour to
push for a service which is safe, reliable
and professional for the students of our
school.
YEAR 11 MOCK EXAMINATIONS
Year 11 students continue their Mock

POP ICONS
Arrangements for the eagerly awaited

been assembled to include members of
local bands. I look forward to seeing the

who will be taking part. The Programme
will commence at 6.30pm and tickets will
cost £7.00 each.
BAD WEATHER ARRANGEMENTS
Please note the following arrangements
in the event that the school has to close
due to bad weather. Parents/carers
should adhere to the following guidance:
• Check the school website: www.st-
augustines.worcs.sch.uk
• Check the local radio stations to see if
Saint Augustine’s is included in the school
closure list.
• Check your mobile phone for a text
message sent to all parents/carers who
have registered their mobile phone
number with the school.
These are the official mouthpieces of the
school, so please ignore rumours and
access one of the above means to
ascertain whether the school is open.

Ali, Teacher of Science, who will cover
Mrs Sheedy whilst she is on her maternity leave.

SCHOOL
OF THE
WEEKLY MASS
10 AO took part in a lovely prayer service today in the chapel.
Their chosen theme was forgiveness and prayers were designed
around this theme. There were some interesting and thoughtful
discussions about the topic. Well done 10 AO.
The Pope’s Twitter Feed:
Date: 19th January: “The Gospel calls us to
be close to the poor and forgotten, and to
give them real hope”
How do we show that we are close to the
poor and forgotten as individuals? Do you
donate time? Money? A listening ear? We must remember that
are actions towards these people is what will give them real
hope.
THE EXTRAORDINARY
JUBILEE OF MERCY
The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy
(also called the Year of Mercy) is a
major event in the Catholic Church,
held from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8), 2015
to the Feast of Christ the King (November 20), 2016.
PRAYING EACH DAY: ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
The ship called Queen Mary was one of the finest of British ships.
Shortly before the ship’s launch in 1934, Sir Thomas Royden, one
of the directors of the shipping company, Cunard, met King
George V (the 5th), intending to ask his permission to name the
new ship “The Queen Victoria”. Royden asked the king if the ship
could be named “after the greatest queen this country has ever
known.” King George, presuming the words were being said of
his wife (Queen Mary), said: “That is the greatest compliment
ever paid to my wife. I’ll ask her if your ship may be named after
her.” It was only years later that the shipping company mentioned
that it had been intending to call the ship “The Queen Victoria” !
Queen Victoria herself died on this day in 1901.
There is always a great ceremony when ships are named, and a
bottle is broken on the bow of the ship. We celebrate
when people are given their name at the time of baptism
(christening). If someone is not bothered to call people
by their name, it might reflect a lack of care and respect. We
know that Adolf Hitler’s father never called him by his
name, but whistled for him (like for a dog) whenever he wanted
him. In some countries, prisoners are called by numbers
rather than by their names as a way of de-humanising them, of
taking away their individuality.
Let’s think in silence for a moment of
one person whom I could value and respect
more. In what specific ways can I
show respect and appreciation to that
person today?
God our Father, You call each of us by name,
and You treasure each of us individually as though no-one else exists.
Inspire us to respect and value each person who comes into our lives
this day. Amen.

TRIPS AND VISITS
‘I’M AN ASTRONAUT, GET ME OUT OF HERE’
Two of our Sixth Form students, Mark Palmieri and Morgan Lane,
were invited to attend an event, which took place during a STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Club at Saint
John Wall on Wednesday evening. ‘I’m an Astronaut, Get Me Out
TIM PEAKE
of Here’ involved a live text chat with one of the Scientists
responsible for enabling Tim Peake’s Mission to the International
Space Station in December
2015. Julia Attias, a PhD
student at King’s College
London researching into ways
that will help to protect
astronauts bodies in space,
was able to answer questions
posed by Mark and Morgan
along with other students
from Saint John Wall School.
In a half hour session, various
questions were posed, ranging
over many topics, such as
future space exploration,
colonising mars, the International Space Station and Tim
Peake's excitement of going
JULIA ATTIAS
there... as well as finding out
how Astronauts pee... (involving something akin to a hover!)
Here are some of the questions posed to Julia with her
responses:
‘What age can you start the process of becoming an astronaut?’
ANSWER: ‘ There is no precise age. However the process does take a
very long time.’
‘How do you get medical supplies, should one of the astronauts
become ill?’
ANSWER: ‘The astronauts are selected for their supremely healthy
constitution and it is very rare that this happens.’
‘Was Tim Peake frightened about the prospect of space travel?’
ANSWER: ‘Not at all, he was massively excited!’
‘How difficult is it to get the calculations correct to get to the
International Space Station?’
ANSWER: ‘The most difficult part is getting the calculations correct to
launch. Thereafter, it is quite simple.’
‘What effects does zero gravity have on your body?’
ANSWER: ‘It has massive effects. It weakens your heart and respiratory system. It also effects muscle wastage. When the astronauts
come back to earth, I will be working on their physiology. I am also
currently working on how to make artificial gravity in space so that the
effects of zero gravity do not take place whilst in outer space.’
It was a truly fun and rewarding trip, with our students asking the
best questions of the group! Well done to both Mark and
Morgan.

MOTHERCARE WORLD, SOLIHULL
On Wednesday Mrs Chinn's GCSE Child Development group
travelled to Mothercare World in Solihull to complete research
for their controlled assessments. Their task was to investigate
whether a pushchair, pram or travel system was the best method
of transporting a 3 month old baby. Students got to try out each
method, including testing things such as handle height, price,
accessories, colour ranges etc, as well as conducting survey's on
the staff and customers in the store. Students were impeccably
behaved as always and completed valuable primary research
towards their controlled assessments. Thanks to Mrs Birch, Mrs
Gribben and Mrs Adams for giving up their time to make this trip
possible. Please read student comments about the trip below:
Ella Burrows 'It was good...I got to try out all of the prams,
pushchairs and travel systems which has helped me so much with
my research.'
Allesha Griffin 'It was a good experience getting to survey the
customers and hearing their opinions on which method of
transporting a 3 month old baby was best'
Rosie Potter ' I had no idea that baby travel equipment was so
expensive!'
Many thanks to Mothercare World, Solihull for facilitating this
activity.

CAREER SPOTLIGHT ON........
Name:: Lauren Hartigan-Pritchard
Occupation: Associate Solicitor, Thursfields
Legal Limited
Qualifications: Law Degree LLB, LPC
What were you thinking of doing when
at school?
I wanted a career in law from a very early
age and as a student at Saint Augustine’s I
received some really insightful careers advice
which helped me to understand which profession would suit me
best and the areas of law that might suit my personality, skills and
ability.
Extra-Curricular experience:
After leaving Saint Augustine’s I spent six months in Kenya
teaching English as a foreign language; this was a fantastic
experience which helped prepare me for University. It was
following this initial insight into the world of education and my
later experience of working for Ofsted that I realised I was
passionate about supporting
educational institutions in
order to ensure students
receive the best possible
start in life. This passion for
education has resulted in my
leading Thursfields Education
Sector offering.
What does your job
involve?
I specialise in financial restructuring and governance working for
both corporate and third sector clients. This includes advising on
contentious insolvency and debt recovery matters,
non-contentious corporate support and financial review work.
What personal qualities are needed?
Forthrightness, patience, and understanding; often clients do not
like to hear that their business or organisation is failing as a
result of their errors or omissions so it is important that you
are able to give the client your honest assessment of the
problem even if they don’t want to hear it. That is not to say that
you must be unsympathetic but no good comes from sugar
coating a problem!
What do you like about the job the most?
The satisfaction of doing a good job for my clients and making a
difference to the success of a business or organisation is what I
enjoy most about my job.
Anything exciting/didn’t anticipate?
Every day is different and there is always something to keep me
on my toes so I am never bored. I didn’t realise until I started
practicing law just how varied the role could be and that is
another aspect of it that I really enjoy.
Salary range: £25,000 - >£100,000 (dependant upon experience, area of expertise and location)

6.30pm start
LENTEN CHARITY - WOULD I LIE TO YOU? #WILTY
Advance notice to all students and staff that a lunchtime show of Would I Lie To You will take place in the
Theatre at 12.30pm on Wednesday, 16th March 2016. An extended lunch will enable students to grab a
bite to eat prior to seeing team captains Mr Bargh and Mr Grogan, with the help of two guests each,
hoodwink each other into believing that what is fake is true, and what is true is not.
Welcome and Transition Evening 2015 - Geography
The aim of the game is to fool the opposition into mistaking fact for fiction and fiction for fact.
To do so, panellists need quick-wit and a poker face.
Only those who can think on their feet will survive interrogation from the other team.
ALL PROCEEDS GO TOWARDS OUR LENTEN CHARITIES.
Russell Group and Competitive HE Courses Support Programme
Widening Student Participation and Providing Application Support
St. Augustine’s works in partnership with many universities, including Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge, to
support students in their preparation for application to these universities and to the most competitive degree
courses such as Medicine, Veterinary Surgery and Law.
Through our support programme, we offer advice, guidance and progress tracking for our most
academically able students, from those starting Year 9 through to their university applications in
Year 13 of Sixth Form, for the most prestigious universities and the highly competitive courses.
Students are supported to apply for Outreach and Enrichment programmes designed to ‘widen
participation’ and encourage students from schools such as ours to aspire to these courses and
further study, including University of Birmingham’s Access to Birmingham (A2B), Routes the Professions
(Medicine / Law) and Academic Enrichment Programme.
Christ’s College is our link college with Cambridge University and regularly
offers subject master-classes, seminars and other events as part of their outreach
‘Area Links Scheme’ within Worcestershire schools.
Our partnership college within University of Oxford, is Oriel College and their
outreach programme supports potential applicants from schools and areas that are
currently under-represented at Oxford University within Worcestershire.
We encourage students to apply for and attend events offered by these universities to help them make informed,
aspirational choices about choosing a university and strengthen their application. Following application, successful
candidates are given guidance on admissions tests and interviews. Every year, we have students successfully
accepted to these competitive undergraduate courses with a large cohort of our students progressing to Russell
Group universities.
Current/Upcoming Events
Each year, we invite students (identified using performance data and predictions, as potential future applicants to
highly competitive courses and universities), to attend workshop seminars offered by Oriel College (University
of Oxford) Outreach programme, here in school. Each Year Group is assigned a specific, targeted session, and
the seminars for this year’s Outreach Day will be held on Tuesday, 26th January 2016.
Two Year 11 and two Year 12 students have applied to attend Oriel’s Medicine Outreach event held at the
university on Saturday 6th February 2016, whilst three Year 12’s have applications pending for a Residential Taster
Event held in the Easter Break on 5-6th April 2016.
Christ’s College, Cambridge is hosting various subject master-classes for Year 12 students on 6th and 27th
February including Physics, Genetics & Biochemistry, English and Theology & Philospohy.
Oxbridge Student Conference 2016 will be held at Edgbaston
Stadium, Birmingham on Tues, 16th March 2016. These
conferences are designed to provide up-to-date information on the
application and admissions procedure at both institutions as well as
providing an insight into student life. The events are aimed at students
who have already completed their GCSE examinations (or equivalent)
and are now undertaking further study. Students must book a ticket
for the event via school, they will be turned away otherwise.
Students who have not been attending the Support Programme
sessions but are interested in finding out more about Oxbridge, Medicine, Law, Vet or other competitive courses, or
attending events, should speak to their Head of Year, Form Tutor or Mrs Collier in the Sixth Form Study Room.
If you have any queries or questions regarding any of the events or wider support programme, please
contact: Mrs EA Collier (Sixth Form Learning Mentor) [email protected]
Congratulations to three students Yr12 (Chloe Tustin, Emily Bicknell
and Summer Smith) for being accepted onto University of Birmingham's
Routes to the Professions: Law 2015-16 programme launching in
February. This exciting initiative at the University of Birmingham aims to
improve the knowledge, understanding and access of under-represented
groups into careers in the legal profession. The programme provides
opportunities for students to develop non-academic skills and capabilities
such as knowledge about different (law and non-law graduate) routes and
careers in the legal profession, opportunities to develop professional
contacts, as well as team working and communication skills.
…in Redditch are seeking passionate, enthusiastic people to join our
excellent team of tutors helping children aged 5-14 with maths and
English. This would be a fantastic way for sixth form students to enhance their CVs
and employability skills and would particularly benefit any of those wishing to pursue a
career with children in the future. We are looking for confident, bright people who
show a flair and passion for working with children. Tutors are required to guide children through maths and literacy
activities and inspire them to enjoy learning in a fun and stimulating environment. We can offer regular shifts in the
evenings and weekends that fit around their studies and other commitments, and our Tutors will also receive
structured training and appraisals with the opportunity for progression. For three consecutive years Explore
Learning have been named in the top 50 of The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For list. Explore were
also named by The Job Crowd as the number 1 company for graduates to work for within the Charity, Education
and Public Sector category in 2015, 2014 and 2013. To apply candidates should simply visit our website
at www.explorelearning.co.uk/careers where they can apply online. If you have any further questions or would like
to find out more, please call on 01527 910 222 or email us at [email protected].

Year 11 Assessment: Mocks
Monday, 18th – Wednesday, 27th January 2016
Dear Parents/Carers
Please see the attached mock assessment tasks and timetable for your son/daughter. I ask that you place this in a
prominent position in the house (eg the fridge is good for obvious reasons!). It is vital that students revise adequately
for these mock examinations, as the results will help us to place them in the right tiers of entry for the summer
exams and inform any further intervention. Please use the list below to help them plan their revision. Short reports
will be given out in time for feedback at the Consultation Evening on Thursday, 11th February 2016.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Year Mr Mill ([email protected])
Yours faithfully
