ZAMIA ADULT RIDING
CLUB NEWSLETTER
PRESIDENTS REPORT
Hi members,
I rode at my first rally for 6mths the other day and it was great being back in
the saddle. I had a lovely lesson with Dave. He is such a positive and
supportive coach. I am looking forward to his desensitising lessons in the
future.
Saturday’s rally was very well attended with all the instructors saying they
put Zamia first. They love coming to such a friendly club. Thanks to everyone
for pitching in to set up. It does make the job much quicker. A huge thanks
must also go to our newest member Rachel for offering to pull the jump
trailer. Someone will be allocated this job at each rally.
We are having a pole painting morning at the PEC on March 26 th. Please
bring a plate to share.
Thank you all for paying the water levy. The grounds are so much nicer to
ride on. The PEC committee is looking into a solution for the dust
suppression issue. They are going to hold a major fundraising raffle and
need prizes by April 10. Members are encouraged to source donations.
Some of the prizes so far are a horse massage, lessons etc. The prizes do not
necessarily have to be horse related.
Hopefully the next four yards will be erected soon. Mark is going to need a
hand when the time comes.
Please don’t park on the septics near the jump judges box. A fence will be
built at the working bee.
I am looking forward to Wednesday’s rally. Hope to see you there.
Happy horse riding,
Maria

Rally Co-ordinators Report
Well we have been very fortunate with the weather for our first two rallies. Our opening rally 27 th February was a great
success and it was nice to all get together again and welcome both returning and new members. The equines looked well
rested from the summer break and all looked to be enjoying themselves as well. Our coaches Hazel, Dave and Katrin had
very positive comments to say and really enjoy coming to our club to teach.
Our next rally was March 09th with Diane, Bec and Dave and yet again the weather held out from the expected 37 degrees
and even though a bit warm was certainly OK to ride. Great to see the return of Maria and Dasher and a successful re
entry from where Maria left off last ride by remaining in the saddle – all be it with a bung eye! Thank you to our club
members who despite being horseless came and joined in for the day – it is great to see you.
Thank you to all for the water levy fee. Although an additional cost – it is necessary to water the arenas and it does make
the surface a pleasure to work on for both the horses, riders and instructors. We will have to continue with this until the
weather breaks.
Our first mid week rally will be on Wednesday 20th March. Unfortunately I will be away for this one. The rally plan will be
issued Thursday evening and if you have any queries please contact Maria who will be in charge of this rally. We have our
coaches Hazel and Leone for this rally. The arenas can be left set up for Saturday rally on the 23 rd. Please get your
bookings in for the 23rd rally by Friday 16th. Also Maria will be assisting with the 23rd March rally co-ordinating as I will be
returning late on 20th March 2013.
Dave Carey will be introducing the desensitization classes this year. A list of items will be distributed to members for us to
make our horses worst nightmare items for inclusion in these classes. The aim of these classes is to give our equines and
ourselves confidence in dealing with difficult and challenging situations. Also has a handy pony element involved. These
classes are well controlled and Dave is very experienced in these classes.
We are also looking at running a formation riding class as well. This improves co-ordination, helps personal space issues
with our horses and sharpens the brain.
We also have two hunter workshop training classes this year the first on June 8 th. Hunter trials are really taking off and
are a lot of fun as less pressured than a full on ODE. Diane has years of experience running and judging these classes.
Please do not hesitate to discuss any rally queries with me as that is my role as co-ordinator and I am more than happy to
help. Look forward to seeing all on Saturday 23rd March.
Thank you Vivien - Vice President/Rally Co-ordinator
NEXT RALLY
rd
This is next Saturday 23 March. This rally will still be a morning rally to escape riding in the heat of
the day. Riders need to be on the grounds by 8.15 am ready to ride at 9.00am.
Please bring a plate to share as we all enjoy a social break and a cuppa halfway through the rally.
MIDWEEK RALLY
The next midweek rally is March 20th at 10:30am. Riders will need to be there by
9:30am to help set up.
THE ZAMIA COACHES

feel free to ask them ANY questions. If you have any concerns please ask me , in my
role as rally co ordinator is to make your riding activities safe and happy.

The next photo is a picture taken at the Perth Royal
Show when Diane was only a young girl. The event
was the pairs baton relay which is a speed event
where one rider jumps first carrying a baton then
passes the baton on to the next rider to jump their
round. Diane rode in this event with a dislocated
collar bone that she got from a fall several days
earlier. Diane had to carry the baton between her
teeth and only had one hand to use to control and
steer her horse "Full Cry". Diane and her partner
went on to win this event.
WANTING.....A free lease pony

There have been some nasty accidents on our
roads recently where horse floats have flipped,
fallen apart or wheels coming off so I thought I
would share this article I found written by Paul
Mercer of Equine Insight and JR Easy Traveller
on Horse Float Maintenance.
Horse Float Maintenance
prevention to the front of the float where the
horses’ heads normally are. If you regularly float
only one horse, you will notice that the interior of
the float on that side is much more prone to rust.
This is caused by the moist air created by the
horse’s breath.
SERVICING YOUR FLOAT
All floats should have an annual service. This will
Most horse owners don’t think about their horse
float until something goes wrong. But a horse
float is a piece of machinery, like a car or a boat
and, as such, it requires regular attention to
keep it running effectively and safely. Horse
floats are often abused as much as they are
used: they get kicked and bitten, they get left
outside in all weathers, driven on gravel and dirt
tracks and, to add insult to injury, they get
regularly covered in manure and urine.
include a thorough visual safety check. It will
also include a wiring and lights inspection and
any broken or worn lights will be repaired or
replaced. Brakes and handbrake will be checked
and adjusted. Bearings will be inspected and
either repacked or replaced depending on the
degree of wear. The tow hitch is inspected and
lubricated as is the jockey wheel. Quite often the
suspension and hinges will be lubricated but this
will depend on the construction of the float.
Cleanliness matters!
A horse float, caravan or trailer specialist will be
able to carry out any repairs and checks, but it
pays to make friends with your local mechanic someone whom you can trust to keep your float
safe and functional.
Before you put your horse float away, make sure
that you clean it out thoroughly every time that it
is used. Manure and urine left in the float will
eventually cause the floor to rot out, putting your
horse’s suture safety at risk!
Dirty floats harbour germs and mouldy straw and
feed is a known cause of many quite serious
respiratory problems in horses.
If possible, park your float under cover, and on a
concrete floor. A dry floor helps to prevent rust
and rot as it inhibits dampness. If you must
leave your float outdoors, try to park in a dry
sheltered spot. A tarpaulin placed over the float
will also provide protection from the elements.
You could also try a haystack cover, which are
quite inexpensive and do a similar job.
It is advisable to place a large plastic bag,
secured by hay twine, around the float coupling
to keep this fitting as dry and clean as possible.
Just like the family car, you should give your
float a ‘spring clean’ at regular intervals. This will
not only improve its appearance, and help to
prevent rust and floor rot, but it will also give you
the opportunity to examine the structure
carefully, for signs of wear and tear.
A liberal application of anti-rust compound such
as fish oil will help keep the float in good order,
but make sure that you undertake this
maintenance when you will not be using the float
for several days. Some compounds are
offensive smelling and the vapours are bad for
your horse. Pay special attention with your rust
It is very unwise to borrow a float that has been
sitting idle for sometime and most likely in need
of repairs and maintenance. You could be
putting yourself, your horse and other road users
at risk.
Maintenance check list
Tyres - treads, pressure, general condition.
Don’t forget the spare tyre too.
Wheels - all nuts done up tight, check for
cracks, dents to the rims or other damage.
Brakes - check adjustment and operation of
braking unit, and brake linings.
Wheel bearings - repack if required.
Lights - all lights operating, and a spare set of
globes in the glove compartment of your vehicle.
Suspension - check the suspension
components and lubricate if necessary.
Ball and Coupling - grease lightly.
Chassis - examine for cracks in high stress
areas.
Float body - check for rust, rot in flooring and
smooth operation of all doors and fasteners.
If you service your float annually and conduct
regular visual safety checks you should get
years of reliable and safe use from your horse
float.
