2006 Foundation election yields two new members
By Gwen Rasiwala — Communications Director
With four candidates
in the running, the residents of Pelican Bay
showed their support for
two, who were officially
announced at the Annual
Meeting on March 27, to
become members of the
Foundation Board of
Directors. Bob Naegele and
Jim Carroll were the top
vote getters in this year ’s
election. The Foundation
received 2,680 ballots in
2006, as compared to 2,534
in 2005 — with a total of
6,490 ballots having been
sent out. This is a testament
to the community’s interest in how Pelican Bay’s
amenities are managed on
their behalf.
Bob Naegele
Bob’s professional background includes advertising,
real estate development and
consumer products, with
special interest in entrepreneurial ventures. In
1997, he led a group of
investors to apply for and
receive an NHL Expansion
Franchise. The team, the
Minnesota Wild, began play
in the fall of 2000 in a
new arena, the Xcel Center,
in St. Paul, Minnesota.
In Shorewood, Minnesota,
a Minneapolis suburb,
Bob was a planning commissioner for three years
and a councilman for seven
years. He has served as
chairman of the Vizcaya
Neighborhood Committee
and was a member of the
Bay Colony Community
Association (BCCA) Board
of Governors, under WCI
control, from 1997-2000.
Bob was a member of
the Bay Colony Transition
Committee 2000-2002, and
after developer turnover,
he was elected to be the
first President of the BCCA
under homeowner control
for three years. He was
elected President Emeritus
in March 2005 by the
Bay Colony Board of Governors and served as liaison
between Bay Colony and
the Pelican Bay Foundation during the annexation process.
Jim Carroll
Upon graduating from
the Illinois Institute of Technology with a Mechanical
Engineering degree, Jim
Carroll joined Procter and
Gamble’s Engineering Division located in Cincinnati,
Ohio. His career with P&G
lasted 36 years, the last 15
years of which he served as
Chief Engineer of the company’s Corporate Engineering Division.
Jim and his wife, De,
have three children and
seven grandchildren. His
stay in Cincinnati found
him spending time as
chairman of the City’s
Riverfront Development
Committee and other volunteer activities.
Pelican Bay has been the
Carroll’s home for over
20 years. Jim was president of the Grosvenor
Condominium for three
years. During this assignment, he started and ran the
Pelican Bay’s Presidents
Council. Jim also spent time
on the Foundation’s Cable
Committee and Long Range
Planning Committee. In the
last eight years, Jim has
devoted much of his time to
the Pelican Bay Services
Division as Board member,
and as its Chairman for the
last three years.
At its recent organizational meeting, the Board
of Directors elected its
officers and committee
chairs. Gerhard Seblatnigg
will remain as Chairman.
Merlin Lickhalter will remain as Vice-Chairman
and be joined by newly
elected Bob Naegele, who
was also appointed as ViceChairman. Bob Uek was
appointed as Treasurer and
Michael Egan will continue
as Secretary. Directors are
Henry Price and Jim Carroll.
The following Board
representatives on standing
committees were appointed:
Legal Committee — Henry
Price, Chair; Ted Raia, Vice
Chair; Management Development & Compensation
Committee — Bob Naegele,

Security Ad-Hoc Committee seeks volunteers
By Kyle R. Kinney, Foundation President
With the current contractual arrangement with
the Collier County Sheriff’s
Department coming to a
close, it has been recommended that an Ad-Hoc
Committee be formed to
obtain community input
regarding
community
security — be it at the beach,
berm or right in your own
neighborhood. The Foundation seeks volunteers
with an interest in helping
to assess member input on
this issue and who may
have some professional
background in community
watch programs or a security background. If you
think you may be interested,
please contact the Foundation at memberservices
@pelicanbay.org.
The Strategic Planning
Committee will be assisting
in this report.

Fitness update
By Bill Bowden, Director of Operations: Community Center, Tennis & Fitness
Since opening in January,
all three areas of fitness
center service are enjoying
strong participation.
Personal Training has
become very popular. Staff
trainers provide the very
best way to maximize
use of equipment, develop a training schedule,
and achieve personal fitness goals.
Massage therapy is doing
very well now due to excellent therapists, pricing, and
promotion, not to mention
word-of-mouth.
Group Exercise classes,
the last service phase to be
introduced after the center
opened, are enjoying strong
participation in Pilates,
Yoga, Pi-Yo, Spinning, and
Stability Ball.
In addition, two ballroom
dance classes offered this
spring filled quickly. Next
season, indoor fitness will
offer expanded classes to
meet demand.

Fitness Center rules and regulations
Approved by Foundation Board of Directors November 7, 2005
By Gwen Rasiwala, Director, Communications
The Foundation has many
adopted rules and regulations
that are used as guidelines for
various areas within the
organization. In an on-going
effort to keep the community
informed of its Pelican Bay
Foundation operations, we
will be providing the various
rules/regulations in upcoming
issues of the Pelican Bay Post.
All rules/regulations and
subsequent amendments are
generally drafted by the
Member Policies and Relations Committee for review
and approval by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Copies of the rules and
regulations are available at the
Commons office for pick-up
and are downloadable from
our website at www.pelican
bay.org under “Documents.”
1. Rationale. Provide rules
and regulations governing
the use of personal fitness
facilities and services.
2. General Policies.
2.1. Personal fitness services in the Fitness Center
are managed exclusively by
the Pelican Bay Foundation.
Only authorized trainers,
therapists, and instructors
under contract with the
Foundation will provide
such services in the Center.
2.2. For safety reasons,
children under the age
of sixteen are not permitted in the Fitness Center
at any time unless they
are working with a
staff trainer.
2.3. Eligible users must
be properly attired to
use the Fitness Center.
Proper attire includes a
shirt and appropriate s
hoes. Tank tops, sandals,
and open-toed shoes are
not permitted.
2.4. Cancellation of personal fitness service appointments and exercise
classes must be made
24 hours prior to the
scheduled appointment to
avoid a charge.
2.5. Cell phones are to
be silenced inside the
Center. Calls taken or made
must be done out of the
fitness areas.
3.Orientation.
3.1. All eligible users are
required to attend a fitness
orientation before using any
equipment for the first time.
3.2. Guests with Guest
Passes must pay a $10
orientation fee annually.
4.Hours of Operation.
4.1. Eligible users may
use the Fitness Center at
any time during normal
operating hours. Guests
with Guest Passes may
utilize the fitness room
between the hours of 11am
to 3pm weekdays and
11am to closing weekends.
5. Security.
5.1. Lockers are for daily
use only. A Membership
Card is left at the fitness
desk in exchange for a
locker key. The Membership Card is returned when
the key is returned to
the desk.
5.2. Personal items should
be kept in lockers at
all times. Personal items
may not be left at the desk
for any reason. The Pelican
Bay Foundation is not
responsible for personal
items lost or stolen.
6. Protocols.
6.1. Eligible users must
swipe their membership card upon entry to
the center.
6.2. There is a 30-minute
time limit on cardiovascular equipment when
others are waiting. Eligible
users using weight equipment must allow others
to “work through” and
not monopolize individual stations.
6.3. Equipment must
be returned to their racks
after use.
6.4. Eligible users must
wipe down equipment
after heavy use. Disinfectant wipes are available
throughout the Center for
this purpose.

Architectural design and review
By Mireya Agnoli, Code Enforcement Director
The Foundation’s Covenant Enforcement Department is responsible for the
design and review of all
exterior alterations within
Pelican Bay. Overall, the
majority of residents understand that if they intend to
add square footage to their
existing home, or perform
significant exterior alterations, they must first obtain
Foundation approval.
Some members are of the
opinion that “minor” items
do not require the approval
of the Foundation. However, this is incorrect —
the General Declaration
and Protective Covenants
require that all exterior
alterations be approved
by the Foundation.
The following is a general
list of items that require
approval; sufficient information should be attached
with your request in order
for the Foundation to make
a decision. In addition,
please check your specific
Neighborhood Covenants
for any other restrictions
that may apply.
1) Antennas — Location
of the antenna needs to be
in an area that is not readily
visible from adjacent streets
and properties. Commercial
properties and condominium
associations who lease roof
space for commercial antennas will not be approved if
the antennas are visible
from adjacent properties
and streets. Site and roof
plans are required, showing
exact location of antennas
and other ancillary equipment in relation to adjacent
properties and streets. Generally, only 18" diameter satellite dishes will be considered for residential properties.
Announcing the arrival of
many new items on our floor!
2) Color change, exterior
— Information provided
with request must indicate
existing color and the
proposed new color by
manufacturer and code. It
is recommended that
owners and Associations
select two or three choices
and paint samples on a
small area of the structure
to be painted. This will
speed up the approval
process and assist in the
proper color selection.
3) Driveway and parking areas — No gravel
or blacktop will be permitted except for commercial properties and
Association roadways. All
material changes including color will require a
sample of each. Contractor
plan and product literature/specifications are
also requested.
4) Flags and Poles —
Only the American flag is
permitted. All flagpoles
must be approved prior to
installation and cannot be
used as an antenna. For
temporary flag requests
other than the American
flag, submit date, time and
type of flag to be temporarily flown. For flagpole
request, submit design
with full specifications
and product literature.
In addition, submit site
sketch to show the exact
location where the pole is
to be installed in relation
to adjacent properties
and streets.
5) Landscaping — Major
changes to original landscaping will require a
landscape plan, which
will be reviewed by a
Florida registered landscape architect. Minor
changes may not require
a complete plan or an
architect’s review, however information provided
must be complete, stating
types, quantity, at-planting
sizes of new material,
and what plants they
will be replacing.
6) Lighting, exterior —
Major changes to exterior
lighting, particularly for
commercial properties and
mid-rise condominium
Associations, will require
a lighting plan, which will
be reviewed by a Foundation architect. Roadway
and parking area lighting will also require a
lighting plan as well as
literature/specifications of
all new fixtures.
7) Roof — Asbestos or
fiberglass shingles are
not acceptable. Check

regardless of type, whether
commercial or residential,
require prior written approval before installation.
This includes temporary as

Replacement of existing
Association signage is
routine. A request to change
existing entry signage must
include schematic drawings with all dimensions,

recommended that owners

proposed location in relation to adjacent properties

11) Tree removal — Also
requires county permit and
Foundation approval except for dead trees. This is
a sensitive issue to many
residents, and therefore
we suggest that adjacent
property owners and Association residents be informed
of any tree removal project.
Request must include reason
for removal, type of tree(s),
and description of replacement tree to include type,
height, span, etc. Association
Board approval is required.
12) Vehicular parking —
There are a number of
restrictions, but basically, no
commercial or recreationaltype vehicles, including
motor homes, trailers,
boats, etc., can be parked
overnight within residential
areas. In addition, a limit of
three vehicles can be parked
overnight in a driveway of
a single-family neighborhood. Parking, however, is
not permitted on the lawn
or street. For temporary
authorization to park any
vehicle(s) that would not
be authorized, submit full
details of date, time, reason,
type of vehicle, owner,
license number, etc.
13) Walls and fences —
Chain link fences are not
permitted and other fences
or walls cannot exceed six
feet in height above the
ground level of adjoining
plot. All requests must
include height, length,
type, design, composition,
material and location. Most
walls and fences will be
required to be planted on
the exterior with appropriate shrubs and/or vines.
14) Shutters — Specify
storm or decorative. Indicate whether electric or
manual operation. Submit
schematic showing window
location, size and color of
shutters. Provide specifications and product literature.
Please note that the
Covenant Enforcement
department has a field
inspector, and it can be
rather uncomfortable to
have this individual on your
site letting you know that
you must stop “improving”
the landscaping until proper
approval is granted by the
Foundation. So remember,
if it is your intent to perform
any exterior alterations and
you are unsure if it requires
approval by the Foundation,
please contact the Covenant
Enforcement Department.

For Florida residents only:
Make the most of your vote
for District 2 County Commissioner
Straight Talk from the Pelican Bay Property Owners Association
By Libbie Bramson, Straight Talk Editor
If you are one of the 5,050
or so Pelican Bay residents
who are “official” Florida
residents, it’s time to start
thinking about the upcoming election for District
2 County Commissioner.
Pelican Bay is part of District 2. While each County
Commissioner ideally represents the interests of all
the people in the County,
the District 2 County Commissioner is the one for
whom we vote and as such
represents us on the County
Board of Commissioners.
Besides determining which
candidate will best represent our interests, the other
challenge is to ensure there
is a large enough voter turnout so that voter apathy
and inertia do not influence
election results. We can’t
speak for the rest of District
2, but we do know that
historically Pelican Bay
voters are very involved. We
need to continue, and even
improve, our good voting
record. The following information will help you do this.
1. Election Dates. The
primary election is scheduled for September 5, 2006.
The general election will be
held on November 7, 2006.
Put these dates in your
calendar now. If you know
that you won’t be here on
these dates, you can vote
via Absentee Ballot. See
items 8 and 9 for details.
2. District 2 Election
Background. To date, three
candidates are running for
one Commissioner seat:
Frank Halas (the incumbent), Joe Foster and
Michael Lissack. Halas and
Foster, both Republicans,
will run against one another
in the Republican primary
on September 5. The
Republican primary winner will then run against
Michael Lissack, an Independent, in the general

election on November 7.
Note: the preceding scenario
is based on the three current
candidates. It is possible
that other candidates will
enter the race between
now and the July 21, 2006,
12pm filing deadline.
3. Who is Eligible to Vote
in the September 5 Republican Primary? Based on
Florida statutes (because
there is a non-Republican
candidate), only registered
(affiliated) Republicans can
vote for District 2 County
Commissioner in the
Republican primary.
4. I think that I am
already affiliated as a
Republican. How can I
make sure? Look at your
Voter Registration Information Card. Toward the
lower right hand corner, a
section titled Identification
Data will show whether
you are already affiliated as
a Rep (Republican), a Dem
(Democratic) or if you have
no party affiliation. If you
are uncertain or can’t find
your card, phone the
County Supervisor of
Elections Office, (239) 7748450, for assistance.
5. I want to affiliate as a
Republican so I can participate in the Republican
primary. How can I do
this? Phone the Supervisor
of Elections Office, (239)
774-8450, for information.
You must make any required changes before
August 7, 2006, in order to
vote in the Republican
primary. This is called the
book closing date, after
which changes cannot be
made until after the primary.
6. Is it a good idea to
affiliate with a major
political party? I’m nonpartisan and don’t like
people to know how I
voted. You have to decide
what makes the most sense
for you. In Collier County
overall, there are more than
twice as many affiliated
Republicans as there are
Democrats. Because of
these numbers, elections
are often determined on
a de facto basis in the
primary election. The subsequent general election is
simply a “formality.”
7. If I affiliate with a
major political party, do I
have to vote for that party’s
candidate in the general
election? You can vote for
whomever you want in the
general election.
8. I will be out-of-town
on September 5. Can I vote
via Absentee Ballot? Yes!
Under Florida law, all qualified voters are permitted to
vote absentee. You may
request an absentee ballot
from the Supervisor of
Elections Office in person
(at the County Government
Complex, 3301 Tamiami
Trail East, Rev. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Bldg.,
Naples, FL 34112-4907), by
mail or by telephone (239)
774-8450. You may also
request an Absentee Ballot
via e-mail. Visit the Supervisor of Elections website at
http://www.colliervotes.com
and click on the Absentee
Info button at the top.
9. What is the deadline for casting Absentee
Ballots? Marked Absentee
Ballots must be mailed or
delivered to the Supervisor
of Elections Office not later
than 7pm on the day of the
election. Allow at least 10
days to two weeks for
delivery, especially if you
are up North.
10. I have a voting question that isn’t covered
in the above items. What
should I do? Phone the
Collier County Supervisor of Elections Office

Pelican Bay Mangroves
Mangrove update
By Kay Potter, Mangrove columnist
The speaker flashed a
map of Florida on the large
screen before his audience.
The map was criss-crossed
with so many black lines
that it looked like an
old-fashioned ball of twine.
Each line represented the
path of a hurricane that
had hit Florida in the
past hundred years, more
than a hundred.
And why not? We all
know that Florida is the
hurricane capitol of the
United States. It is a long
peninsula that juts out
into the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean;
the main traveling lanes
for hurricanes.
Then the speaker surprised his audience by
stating that hurricanes and
other natural disasters such
as fires and floods are
necessary to maintain the
biodiversity of our environment and that “if they did
not exist, we would have to
invent them.”
The speaker went on to
explain that “one species’
disaster is another ’s opportunity,” and that those
able to recover stay in
place, they adapt, gain
experience, “hunker down”
and survive. If there
were no hurricanes, it
would be a disaster for
them — for hurricanes,
as awful tragedies as
they are, bring renewal
on a large scale. They
clear out the old and
decaying and make way
for new growth, introduce
new species and stimulate reproduction.
In a scholarly talk laced
with humor and familiar
examples, the speaker
advised humans to cease
trying to manage or control
nature and recognize that
we are just a part of nature,
as dependent for clean air
and water as any other
species, and to plan accordingly. That included
considering where we
place our homes, and the
unintended results of our
engineering feats.
The speaker was Dr.
Edwin M. Everham, professor of environmental studies
at the Florida Gulf Coast
University. The study of
how forests respond to
disturbances such as hurricanes is his particular field
of expertise. He was the
guest speaker at the annual
meeting of the Mangrove
Action Group, Inc., held
on March 18 at our new
Community Center. His
rapt listeners kept him on
stage for a much longer
period in a question and
answer session.

in our mangrove forest and
reports on them periodically. She stated that she has
observed an increase in
boring beetle infestation in
the trees, especially in the
south end of Pelican Bay,
another indication that
the trees are under stress.
She also stated that while
the digging of channels
is important to bring
salt water into the mangrove forest, it also necessitates cutting the roots of
adjacent trees, thus making
them less stable in high
winds and hurricanes.
The meeting was chaired
by Tom Cravens, president,
who conducted a brief
business meeting at which
all present directors were
re-elected. In addition, two
new directors were elected
from the floor.
Directors of the Mangrove Action Group for
the forthcoming year are:
Lester Brown, Mary Bolen,
Those attending were also
fortunate to hear Dr. Jon C.
Staiger, the former head
of the City of Naples Environmental Department,
now marine consultant for
Turrell & Associates, the
environmental firm that
manages our mangrove
forest, and Ms. Kathy M.
Worley, mangrove expert
with the Conservancy of
Southwest Florida.
Dr. Staiger stated that our
mangroves are still under
recovery and pleaded for a
reduction in the fertilizers,
pesticides and pollutants
that enter our mangrove
forest through runoff from
our landscapes and driveways. He also said that we
must monitor our channels
and other waterways and
remove vegetation that
impacts water flow.
Ms. Worley, who has a
master degree in mangrove
management, is presently
maintaining ten study plots

Marcia Cravens, Estelle

In addition, John Domenie,
ex-officio, remains as
liaison with the Pelican
Board Services Division. Mr.
Domenie addressed the
members, giving a short
history of the organization.
Mr. Cravens also announced that the Mangrove Action Group had
been granted the sum of
$1,000 from the Conservancy of Southwest
Florida with which to
continue its environmental
work and education at the
grassroots level.
Mr. Cravens led a round
of applause for Mr. Lester

Area’s new International Design
Center plan revealed to
Women’s League
By Jo Boettner Ward
At the March 8 luncheon meeting of The Pelican Bay Women’s League, special guest
speaker, Margaret Miller, discussed Phase 1 of the three-story International Design Center
which has showrooms beginning to open in April 2006. Miller, one of Southwest Florida’s
great entrepreneurs, is President and CEO of Miromar Corporation.
The International Design Center, located at exit 123 off of I-75, will have the first floor
open to the public. The upper floors are open to the trade only, but accessible through
IDC’s “Designer-On-Call” program, which gives customers the opportunity to choose a
professional designer for consultation and access to upper floors. Showrooms, to mention
several, include Baker Furniture, Kravet Fabrics, Murano Glass Creations, and dozens
of furniture, fabric, floor covering and decorative arts showrooms.
Miller loves to travel and has incorporated various style elements from all over the world
as inspiration for her projects. The village of Portofino, Italy influenced her design for
Miromar Outlets. For Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club, inspirations were the French
and Italian Rivieras, Cote d’Azur, and Italy’s Amalfi Coast. She shared inspiration from
her favorite poet and a preview of her many upcoming projects. Enthusiastic attendees
received black canvas bags with IDC samples.
Miller also shared upcoming project plans, including a 5-star condo hotel at Miromar
Lakes and phase II of the Beach Clubhouse; Phase V of Miromar Outlets; The Shoppes
at Miromar Village; and the Miromar Professional Office Park next to IDC.
When finally completed, the International Design Center will be 400,000 square
feet, housing showrooms of fine furniture, accessories, wall coverings, floorings,
lighting, kitchen, bath, art and antiques.

I had eight walkers yesterday. They were from Boston
and Seattle. It was high
tide, but the Osprey showed
up fishing, there were
Brown Pelicans, Tri-color
and some White Ibis. The
shells were pretty motley.
The people had great questions, so we lasted two hours.

Around the Bay
guided walk news...continued from page 27
Thursday’s report
by Ruth
We had 13 very interested
participants today. Only a
couple of people dropped
out in the beach area.
One woman couldn’t walk
on the sand.
Friday’s report by Art
I had a great group of 13
today, including a threemonth-old participant. We
saw Orb Weavers in abundance, a family of raccoons
scampering through mangrove shoots, and feeding
White Ibis in the mangroves.
Saturday’s report
by Ed
I had two couples today.
They found out about the
walk through the Pelican
Bay Post. While very
interested, they had a time
constraint, so I held the
walk to two hours. I used
Tom’s laser to point out
Mangrove Crabs and the
Basilica Spider Egg Sacs
that are so hard to see. My
couples were not members
of the Conservancy and
didn’t know much about it.
As a result of my walk, they
will be visiting the campus
next week and they offered
me a $40 tip! I had them
put the money in a Conservancy envelope and I
will be dropping it off on
campus next week.
Second Monday’s
report by Mary
I had six participants, all
of which were renters or
owners in Pelican Bay who
had heard and read that it
was a must-do event. Back
home was New York,
Illinois and Wisconsin. It
was high tide. The Osprey
put on their usual show,
thankfully, and the White
Ibis, Little Blue Heron, Tricolor Heron and the Brown
Pelican showed up while I
talked about the Eagle and
Osprey. When we arrived
at the beach, I found that it
was off limits just to the
north of the ramp due to
the dredging at Clam Pass.
There were few shells, so
I pulled out my trusty
supply. We talked about
the stranded Pigmy Sperm
Whale beaching a couple
of years ago, also about
sea turtle nesting, dolphins
and manatees.
Second Tuesday’s
report by Tom
We had a total of 14
people today including the
two Ed took. Sheri took a
group of six women and I
took a group of three
couples one of the couples
was from England. We saw
a raccoon on the ground.
The high point was getting to
watch an Osprey feeding in
a tree. See the image above.
Second Tuesday’s
report by Sheri
Great picture, Tom —
that silly bird kept sliding

guided walk news...continued from page 28
Woodpeckers right beside
the boardwalk near the
parking lot tram stop as
we made our return walk.
Second Wednesday’s
report by Bette
I had two walkers from
Illinois — one a member of
Conservancy. The walk
was quiet...lots of spiders,
new growth on mangroves,
few shells, more aquatic
plants on beach, lots of
Calusa ponderous ark
shells...ok to take since
not associated with discernable “dig.”
Second Thursday’s
report from Ruth
I had eight good participants, including a very
sharp first grader “who
was wonderful.” A tram
driver had pointed out the
flowering Tallandsia to
him so I had him point it
out to the group.
Second Friday’s
report by
Barbara & Ron Miner
We had 10 people on
our tour today, including
several of our friends and at
least two return visitors
with friends for the tour.
We saw a spectacular Tricolor Heron in mating
plumage. It’s beak was a
brilliant blue and it had
a white feather at the
back of its head that
looked like a night heron.
Truly spectacular. He was
wading south of the
boardwalk near the creek
that had been blocked
earlier. There was also a
Snowy Egret in mating
plumage there.
Second Saturday’s
report by Ed
What a disappointment.
No one showed up. I think
the drop in temperature into
the 50s at walk time, not to
mention the stiff breeze,
kept people away. The
highlight of my walk was
having a Black Racer charge
across the sandy road about
two feet in front of me.
That gave me some really
fresh tracks to look at.
On Saturday, Jack, the
Tram Driver, pointed out a
new shrub growing beside
the boardwalk and asked
me what it was. I told him
it looked like a Schefflera
but I wanted to check it
out to be sure. I have
now verified that it is
an Australian Umbrella
Tree aka Octopus Tree,
Schefflera actinophylla
“act-in-o-fi-la,” not a
Florida native. It is on the
right side of the boardwalk
as you head toward the
beach. Look for it past the
crow’s nest but well before
you get to the blooming
Cardinal Air Plant.
The photo below and this
following information are
from http://mgonline.com/
schefflera.html
Native to Australia, New
Guinea and Java, the
Umbrella Tree, Schefflera
actinophylla, is very common in South Florida and
the warmer parts of Central
Florida. Schefflera is also
seen indoors as a houseplant all over the world.
Rated up to 40 feet,
Umbrella Tree has large
shiny medium green leaves
held in groups of seven
compound leaves. Observers in New Guinea
report seeing Schefflera
growing epiphytic starting
as much as 40 feet up in
tall rainforest trees
Mature trees outdoors
in full sun develop very
showy flowers in the
summer. The Schefflera
shown in the picture to the
left is in the final red stage
of bloom. Unfortunately,
this Schefflera is also on
Florida’s “Don’t Plant” list
of nuisance trees. What
many people don’t realize is
outdoors, Schefflera is a
nuisance for three reasons:
1) Schefflera seeds itself very easily causing
Schefflera to grow where
no one wants a large tree;
2) Roots are strong, aggressive and can take over
much of the surrounding
soil; and 3) Schefflera sheds
leaves constantly creating
a littered appearance
below it.

Navy League interested in establishing a Naples council
Bill Sanchez, a Pelican
Bay resident and a National Director of the Navy
League of the United States
(Navy League), is interested
in starting a Navy League
council in the Naples area.
The Navy League, founded
in 1902 and headquartered
in Arlington, VA, is a
civilian organization. It
is dedicated to informing
the American people and
government that the U.S.
is a maritime nation and
its national defense and
economic well-being are
dependent upon strong sea
services — U.S. Navy, Marine
Corps, Coast Guard and
Merchant Marine. With
over 275 councils and
66,000 members worldwide, it has become the
foremost citizens’ organization to serve, support,
and stand with all the U.S.
sea services. There are 24
councils in Florida.
In addition to educating
national leaders and the
nation, supporting the men
and women in the sea
services and providing
assistance to sea service
families, the Navy League
educates and trains our
youth in the customs and
traditions of the sea services
through a Naval Sea Cadet
Corps (NSCC). There is
an active NSCC unit that
drills in Ft. Myers.
Membership in the Navy
League is open to any U. S.
citizen…civilian or military.
No military background is
required. Members of the
armed forces are eligible,
but not while on active duty.
However, their spouses
can join any time.
“Why should you join the
Navy League?” Well, there
are many excellent reasons.
Monthly meetings will be
planned with interesting
speakers from both the
business and military communities. Field trips will
be arranged, which can
include tours and/or day
trips on U.S. Navy or U.S.
Coast Guard vessels, visits
to the U.S. Southern Command in Miami and other
military and Department
of Defense facilities. There
will likely be combined
meetings with some other
local organizations such
as war veterans groups,
the Reserve Officers Association, the Military Officers
Association of America
and others. As the council
grows, Corporate Affiliate
members will be solicited
which should generate
business for them and
certain advantages /
discounts for NLUS members. As with other organizations, there will be a
community service involvement including support of
Junior Reserve Officer
Training Corps (JROTC) in
local schools, of veteran’s
activities during the year
and of other meaningful
activities in the Naples area.
Membership entitles you
to the Navy League monthly
magazine, SEAPOWER,
which has interesting and
well written articles on a
myriad of subjects. The
January issue is the Annual
Almanac of SEAPOWER

“Smart Home” of the future is here today
By Matt Peters, Wireless Home President and proud Post advertiser
Do you remember the
1970’s animated cartoon
the Jetsons? Did you ever
wonder if George and
Jane’s futuristic home
would become a reality?
Cease to wonder, it’s
here. The “Smart Home”
has arrived with lifestyle
enhancing benefits made
easier than you can possibly imagine.
A “Smart Home” is when
music, movies, lights,
temperature, security and
surveillance cameras are
all integrated into a single
control, accessible from
anywhere in your home.
Better yet, accessible from
your cellular phone or
any internet access from a
secondary location. Imagine,
controlling or monitoring
your home from a thousand miles away.
The “Smart Home”
allows you to listen to
your music in any room
independently while viewing digital photos of a
recent vacation, children,
or grandchildren on the
big screen TV, all while
having pre-set lighting to
set the mood.
Sound pretty sophisticated?
It is. However, it’s all made
easy with products designed
with ease of use in mind.
The “Smart Home” isn’t
just for new home
construction. It functions
superbly in the existing
home market, or retro-fit.
The devices required to
fulfill the “Smart Home”
experience can be connected with Category5e
(networking) cables or with
“wireless” technologies.
Even if your home lacks the
“wired” capabilities for
today’s advanced solutions,
you can benefit from
technological advances.

Letter to the Editor
The Collier County Sheriff has informed the Pelican Bay Services Division of his decision
to terminate our contract for County police services by early April. Sheriff Hunter
promised improved coverage for Pelican Bay. We have enjoyed a deputy 24/7 on
permanent duty in Pelican Bay for many years. I think the patrols through the
condominiums and the control of speeders on Pelican Bay Blvd. and residential roads
have been a great benefit to the community.
The Sheriff admits he is under staffed. The deputies are going to be on 12-hour shifts.
My concern is he wants our deputies more than our money. In addition, we bought and
paid for five patrol cars with current mileage ranging from about 15 to 55 thousand miles.
The Sheriff has requested we donate these patrol cars to his department. I think we should
be compensated for the value of these patrol cars. We need an “urban” level of police
service. Residents that have been here for seven or eight years will remember when Pelican
Bay Blvd. was a speeders delight. I’m not from Missouri, but I have the show-me-state
attitude, and the Sheriff must prove he can do more with less.
I am retiring after completing eight years of service on the PBSD board and I thank the
people of Pelican Bay for their support and the opportunity to serve.

Letter to the Editor
I would like to thank all of the residents of Pelican Bay for considering my candidacy
for the Foundation Board. I would, of course, especially like to thank all of the residents
who voted for me, who were willing to put their trust in me, but I would also
thank everyone who took the trouble to vote, no matter which of the excellent
candidates they chose.
I am immensely proud that I received the most individual household votes. I thank
each and every one of you. I hope my candidacy opened some windows on our thinking
and opened some eyes to all that we can do together; I hope my suggestions and
ideas will be incorporated into Board actions during the coming year. Most
importantly, I had the opportunity to learn from each of you your concerns,
expectations, and hopes for the future of Pelican Bay.
The first action I believe that we all need to take is to attend Foundation board meetings
regularly and make our opinions known — individually, and as groups. The best
example of activism is the women’s exercise group with their very clear proposal
for improving the South Beach exercise boardwalk. That should be one of the
Board’s first priorities for an internal improvement.
I am grateful that I had the opportunity to present myself before so many of you
at the Forum, Men’s Coffee, and the women’s exercise group. I learned from
each question. My hope is that in the future we will all work together to make a
great place to live even greater.
For now, I think all of us should be pleased at the excellent choices made by
the voters, and give our support to Bob Naegele and Jim Carroll to provide new
wisdomto the Foundation. I will be at the Foundation’s board meetings, and
I hope to see you there.

Dear Sirs/Madam,
Our family recently had a
family reunion and one of
the evenings was spent
at South Beach Sandbar
Restaurant. I am writing
you to compliment on the
wonderful service that Tiny

family had such a good
time! We are fortunate to
have such a nice place to
gather for special — and
just regular occasions.
Please pass on our thank
you and appreciation to
Tiny and her staff.
Sincerely,
