For those who live in Napa Valley – and those who wish they did… An Insider’s Look at Napa Valley Volume 12 Number 38 Sept. 19, 2016 Details on Kenzo restaurant coming to downtown Napa a highly refined palate, but unfortunately, I was unable to find a place for a truly elevated authentic Japanese dining experience,” said Kenzo Tsujimoto. “Since establishing Kenzo Estate Winery, I have wanted to share my vision and express the unique beauty of Japanese food in Napa Valley.” I wonder how chef Masaharu Morimoto feels about that… At Kenzo’s culinary helm will be executive chef Hiroyuki Kanda, one of the most admired and celebrated chefs in Japan, whose award-winning restaurant “Kanda” has achieved three Michelin stars for nine consecutive years. Chef Kanda, who has been working on the menu, concept and oversight of all staff training to ensure all standards of excellence, will be based out of Napa for the opening and will continue to introduce new menus seasonally. In addition, all Kenzo key culinary staff have been training in Japan with Chef Kanda at his restaurant to ensure that performance, preparation and presentation all meet his Kenzo Estate owners Kenzo and Natsuko expectations. The resort has relocated the reception lobby from the top of the hill, formerly accessed over a Situated on 22 acres, Solage is an 89-room number of tight turns on narrow driveways, to the environmentally conscious resort. They’ve also built a porte-cochère carriage porch to make it obvious where the entrance is – and provide protection from the sun and rain. The reception is trendy informal, not the traditional formal counter. The former reception area on the hilltop is now an owners’ lounge – the resort features many shared ownership and some wholly owned homes as well as cottages. The adult pool is also there, and they serve breakfast and lunch on weekends there, too. There are many changes, with big ones to come. People love to be married in wine country, and since it’s almost impossible to do so at a winery in Napa, the Carneros Resort has significantly upgraded its wedding and event space, the Arbor, spending $1 million to make it even more appealing. It’s at the end of the resort, overlooking rural area (and vines). They’ve expanded Farm’s outdoor seating, adding heaters and sun shades to make it more comfortable. A private location has been added outside the private dining room, too. The family pool area near Farm and reception has added trellises, covers and more seating space. It also has a hot tub and walk-in family pool. Half the cottages have been upgraded, with the rest coming up. They’re very luxurious with private outdoor showers and patios, some with hot tubs. You’d never know they cottages had to be sized like the RVs and travel trailers that once occupied the space; that’s how they were able to use the property for a resort (The same thing happed at Calistoga Ranch, arguably the most exclusive report in the valley). The Pavilion for cocktails remains unchanged. Now to what’s coming: The biggest change is that the Boonfly Café is being relocated to near the entrance to the resort where the market is now. That should vastly improve parking and access, which was tricky from Carneros Highway. Market is shrinking to a coffee and pastry kiosk with a boutique added in present offices near the bocce court. And the biggest external change: The entrance is being rerouted so you’ll drive straight in from Carneros Highway, not immediately turn right. Instead, a new entry will enter where the Carneros store once was, then turn straight to the lobby. NapaLife is published 50 times a year. The subscription rate is $50 per year for email delivery. The resort already has a 1/2-acre produce garden near the top of the hill as well as the raised beds near the entrance. The 28-acre grounds are full of fruit trees, too. I visited last week and snatched some figs, noticing quince, too, but those are just for cooking. All the changes noticed were positive but one. The names of local families like the Bartoluccis and Cejas that have identified each little “neighborhood” of cottages are being replaced by names that suggest local flora and fauna to the region, such as Lavender, Persimmon, "Sparrow", Fig and Juniper. I note that the local vintners and growers who fought the resort weren’t used, anyway. And local opposition still makes it impossible to simply enter the resort from Old Sonoma Rod, though the fire access remains if it’s ever needed. Finally, as mentioned last week, general manager Phillip Kendall will be moving to manage Solage as soon as a replacement is found for Carneros Resort. And the company will be managing Carneros Resort itself since the contract with PlumpJack expired. New office for BottleRock Latitude 38 Entertainment, which manages BottleRock, has moved into new offices at 801 Coombs St. in downtown Napa at the corner of Third Street. Napa housing is expensive… As if you didn’t already know it, a new MagnifyMoney study named Napa among the United States’ least affordable housing markets. MagnifyMoney (the free, independent site that aims to make complicated banking decisions easier to understand) named Napa the seventh most expensive metro area for 25-44 year-olds and eighth most expensive for 45-65 year-olds. Crunching data from sources including the U.S. Census, Zillow and Bankrate, MagnifyMoney also found that: • • 9 of the 10 most affordable metro areas are located in the Midwest. Bulgheroni has bought a winery at 500 Meadowood Lane in St. Helena and plans to renovate it for his new winery, Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate. The winery formerly served as the founders room for the wine portfolio of H. William Harlan and produced the first vintages of The Napa Valley Reserve. The enhancement project will include updates to both the winemaking and hospitality facilities. Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate will produce small lot Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the estate and select sites within the Napa Valley. Winemaking is led by winemaker Philippe Melka and blended with consulting enologist Michel Rolland. The first release of Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate wines – the 2014 vintage – will coincide with the winery’s opening in February. In keeping with Bugheroni’s agricultural values, the Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate vineyard is farmed sustainably and is certified organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). Bulgheroni is an Argentinian-Italian vintner and entrepreneur in the agriculture and energy sectors. His wineries include Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate (St. Helena), Renwood (Sierra Foothills), Bodega Garzón (Uruguay), Argento and Bodega Vistalba (Mendoza, Argentina), Sarmiento Vineyard (Patagonia, Argentina), Dievole (Chianti Classico, Tuscany), Podere Brizio (Montalcino, Tuscany), Le Colonne (Bolgheri, Tuscany), Chateau Suau and Chateau de Langalerie (Bordeaux), as well as Poggio Landi Vineyard (Montalcino, Tuscany) and a vineyard in Barossa Valley (South Australia). In addition to grape growing and wine production, Bulgheroni is a rancher and agriculturist whose enterprises encompass olive oil production, berries, nut orchards, apiculture, powdered milk production, forestry and cattle raising. For more, visit www.bulgheroniwine.com. Roots Run Deep opens tasting room Roots Run Deep Winery has opened a tasting room at Jamieson Ranch Vineyards off Highway 12. Jamieson Ranch’s tasting room remains, too. Roots Run Deep Winery began making its portfolio of Napa Valley wines there in 2014. The wines include Carneros Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and Napa Valley Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon at this winery. The opening of the tasting room allows Roots Run Deep to integrate its production and hospitality all at one location. Roots Run Deep Winery will pour their Educated Guess brand wines and Hypothesis Cabernet Sauvignon in the tasting room. A flight of five wines will be $25. In 2017 the winery plans to introduce limited production wines only available in the tasting room. The tasting room is open seven days a week from 10am – 5 p.m. No reservations are required. The tasting room is at 1 Kirkland Ranch Rd. in American Canyon. Gilmore head winemaker at CK Mondavi The Peter Mondavi family has appointed Charles Gilmore head winemaker for CK Mondavi Winery. He comes from Fetzer Vineyards, where he was winemaker for 12 years. He is replacing longtime head winemaker, John Moynier, who has worked at CK Mondavi for more than 30 years and will work alongside Gilmore before retiring later this year. Gilmore also brings extensive experience in sourcing fruit from diverse areas of California, ranging from Mendocino and Lake Counties to the Central Coast and throughout the Central Valley. Gilmore has 17 years of winery experience. Prior to Fetzer, he spent time in the Barossa Valley of Australia, as well as working with a consulting winemaker in southern France. 6 He holds a bachelor of science in viticulture and enology from the University of California, Davis. CK Mondavi wines are made by the Peter Mondavi Sr. family from the family’s 1,850 acres of vineyards and those of partners. They include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Scarlet Five red blend, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Moscato, Sauvignon Blanc and White Zinfandel. All CK Mondavi wines sell for a suggested $6.99. Cuvaison adds Warhol artwork to bottles Cuvaison Vineyards has introduced the Andy Warhol by Cuvaison Collection, a limited-edition wine-box set featuring two estate wines labeled with rarely seen screen-prints from Andy Warhol. Cuvaison collaborated with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, a not-for-profit leading funder of contemporary art, to create three limited edition Collector’s Box sets. The first Andy Warhol by Cuvaison Collection will be released this fall featuring a 2014 Chardonnay from the Carneros Estate and a 2014 red Bordeaux blend from its Brandlin Vineyard on Mount Veeder – exclusively sourced from the best fruit of these two premiere vineyards. Releases in 2017 and 2018 will follow. In the early 1980s, Alexander Tai Schmidheiny, owner of Cuvaison, commissioned Andy Warhol to create artwork for a Cuvaison wine label. The results were numerous screen-prints envisioned utilizing Polaroid pictures of configured grapes in stunning patterns and vibrant colors. Artwork for each wine label in the Collection was hand-chosen by Cuvaison, The Andy Warhol Foundation and the Schmidheiny family. To celebrate the launch of the Collection, Cuvaison will have original Warhol artwork on display in their tasting rooms’ intimate gallery via Christie’s New York. The installment of artwork includes 10 original Warhol screen prints and is the first of its kind for Cuvaison. Visitors can view the exhibit by reservation. For reservations, call 942-2455. Sets will retail for $250. A barn will be torn down and replaced with a twostory, 12,745-sq.-ft. building with a modern barn aesthetic. The winery can host 85 visitors weekly and six marketing events annually with up to 50 people. It will have a 1,500-sq.-ft. tasting room, a small private tasting room and a covered outdoor tasting terrace. The market will be flooded with greens of all kinds, onions and even some early cole crops, like broccoli, cauliflower, and the stunning Romanesco. The Napa Farmers' Market regularly hosts local nonprofit organizations. Come and meet some of the local groups serving our community and our people.
