The Dennis Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1957 to promote the
Town of Dennis and its businesses. The Chamber offices are located at the
corner of Routes 28 and 134, the main intersection in town.
As we celebrate over 50 years of service to the Dennis Community and
beyond, the Dennis Chamber has grown into a dynamic 400 member
organization that remains dedicated to its core values and mission.

he view is dazzling atop the
bluff in Dennis overlooking
Cape Cod Bay near Sesuit
Harbor. On a clear day you can see
the Sagamore Bridge from the deck
of this stunning Cape-style, bowed
roof summer home under
construction. Like a manicured
green at an elite golf course, the side
yard gently slopes to the lip of the
bluff where it is bordered by a lush
buffer strip of pink and white native
roses, appropriately called Nearly
Wild.
When it comes to green, there is
more than meets the eye here. The
emerald yard is carefully graded,
creating a swale near the bluff
where the roses absorb storm runoff
before spilling over the bank. The
home, designed and built by
LaBarge Homes in West Harwich, a
leader in green building and design
techniques, is a model of efficiency
and resource conservation. Green
building has been defined generally
as the practice of increasing the
efficiency of buildings as it relates to
the use of materials, energy and
water, while reducing negative
impacts on the environment and
human health through improved
siting, design, construction and
maintenance.
As with all new homes under
newly adopted Massachusetts
Building Code regulations, the
Dennis structure is fitted with
hurricane-rated windows and doors
that can withstand sustained winds
of up to 110 miles-an-hour. But this
5,000-square-foot home, in all ways,
goes well beyond the rulebook. “My
goal is to get the envelope as tight as
possible,” says designer/builder
Todd LaBarge, a former licensed
bridge engineer for the State of
Maryland. “That way as little energy
as possible is used to heat and cool
the house.”
To accomplish this, LaBarge, who
has used “green” building techniques
for close to 14 years, installs exterior
walls made with insulated concrete
forms, nine and five-eights of an inch
thick. A pump truck pours the
concrete into the forms, and shingles
are then attached to wood sheathing
that covers the concrete. The bowed
roof is also secured with concrete
forms, making the home as secure as
a downtown high rise in Boston, and
as energy efficient as the Sun, saving
homeowners more in energy and
maintenance costs than they have
spent on green products and
techniques.
Masonry constructed homes with
hurricane resistant windows and
doors, LaBarge says, also save on
insurance costs. Many insurance
companies will waive wind damage
deductibles on waterfront homes
assessed at five percent of the value of
the home. “That’s a lot of money,” he
adds.
The Dennis house under
construction is fitted with numerous
“green” products, from floors, to
utilities, to interior walls and
ceilings—many of which are
purchased at the South Dennis
branch of Mid Cape Home Centers,
the first building material supplier in
southeastern Massachusetts to
receive Green Dealer Certification.
The store, with a special green
products section, offers 150 such
products from cleaning, to gardening
to construction.
Green design, building and
remodeling and green products are
becoming far more commonplace for
obvious financial and philosophical
reasons. With energy costs at
nosebleed levels, homeowners are
looking to both save money and
preserve the environment, says Jim

Builder in Dennis. REEF, like
LaBarge, is a trendsetter in the
design-build business.
“It’s our company philosophy to
provide customers with the best
products available, and to embrace
the industry trend toward green
building,” Hagerty says. “We feel
green products add great value to a
home and are environmentally
responsible.” The added cost, Hagerty
notes, unquestionably pays for itself
in other savings.
REEF, in business for 23 years,
offers energy-efficient green building
and design in its framing, insulating,
floor systems, wall systems, utilities,
heating and cooling equipment and
septic system installation. “Many
green products also retard against
insects and rot, and add years of life
to the home,” Hagerty adds.
The “green” trend today is entirely
customer driven, says Lynn MasonSmall, Director of Marketing for Mid
Cape Home Centers. “We started
offering these products years ago at
the request of our customers and
contractors, who have become more
aware of the benefits of sustainable
building and environmentally friendly
building practices,” she says, adding
that Mid-Cape Home Centers has
incorporated green practices and
philosophies into its own operation.
“We’re walking the talk,” she says,
noting the company has instituted inhouse operational programs for trash
recycling, energy savings, recycling
inkjet and toner cartridges, cellphone
recycling, employee environmental
education programs and regular
participation in environmental causes
on the Cape.
“We’re particularly proud of our

“We’re getting more and more calls,
inquiring about green building and
products,” says Todd LaBarge. “We
are committed to providing the most
accurate, up-to-date information
possible, a technology that is forever
changing.”
Green building is not a fad, insists
Hagerty, REEF’s preconstruction
project manager. As energy prices
continue to climb and resources
become more depleted, homeowners
will turn more and more, he adds, to
ways of preserving the environment
and saving on energy and
maintenance costs. The one

20—30 minutes; Trail 2 is 1
TRAIL
Location: At the northern end
of Town Hall parking space,
through the gate and take the
right-of-way path for 1500 feet
or a 6 to 10 minute walk. There
is a large map sign on the left.
Here the trail begins. Come
back the same way.
Approximate length: 3/4 mile
plus round trip on right-of-way
(30 minutes).
Facilities: One bench.
FRESH POND
CONSERVATION AREA
Location: The area consists of
27 acres acquired under the
self-help program in 1968. It is
6/10 of a mile from the light at
Upper County Rd. in Dennisport
on Rte. 134 going south. Sign is
green with white letters. There
are five trails: Trails 1 and 2 are
below the parking space; Trail 3
is north from the parking space;
Trail 4 should be considered
abandoned — its signpost is in
bad repair and the trail is
impassable because of fallen
trees and broken bridges. Trail
5 (1/10 mile south) is beautiful
woodlands; however, one should
be aware of private property, wet
ground and broken bridges.

Facilities: 2 picnic tables, 2 fireplaces and good parking. About
half-way around the ponds, the
Scouts made little handrails and

Location: End of Forest Pines Dr.
off Rte. 134 in E. Dennis. It is a
circular trail.
Approximate length: 3/4 mile.

RECREATION AREA
Location: At the corner of Bob
Crowell Rd. and Old Bass River
Rd., S. Dennis.
Approximate length: 1 1/4 miles
in length and is a circular route.

Location: At the end of Quivet
Cemetery in E. Dennis—end of

to return. About 2 1/2 miles round
trip.

SWAN POND OVERLOOK
Location: From Rte. 134, take
Upper County Road to Searsville
Rd. and then left on Center St. The
site is 1/2 mile on the right overlooking Swan Pond.
Approximate length: 1 to 1-1/2

benches along coastal bank;
fishing.
ROMIG-JACQUINET & SIMPKINS NECK
CAPE COD RAIL TRAIL
Location: Starts on Rte. 134
across from Hall Oil Company in
S. Dennis; starts on the RR rightof-way.

route goes to Wellfleet, approx. 24.5
miles. The trail also has a Chatham
extension approx. 11.7 mi.
