Family Finds Comfort and Stability During The Holidays
Parents will do anything for their children, especially when the
health of their little ones is in jeopardy.
That’s certainly the case for Veronica and Bobby Hays of
Jonesboro, Ark. Their 3-year-old son Hunter was born with
Hirschsprung’s disease, a condition in which intestinal nerve cells
fail to form properly during fetal development. The condition
causes malnutrition and bowel obstruction as a result of the
missing nerve cells.
The only viable treatment for Hunter is a small bowel transplant,
and it could take months before an appropriate donor is found. The
Hayses were referred to specialists at Riley Hospital for Children
in Indianapolis and put on a donor waiting list. Veronica and
Bobby quit their jobs, sold virtually everything they owned and
moved 450 miles away from their family and friends so that they
could be close to Hunter’s doctors.
“The House saved us,” Bobby said. “We spent every
dime we had on hotels, amounting to $200 a week.
We only had $800. When we needed help the most,
the Ronald McDonald House took us in.”
With the holidays just around the corner and family and friends so
far away, the Hayses have found comfort in what they know will
be lasting friendships they have formed at the House.
“It’s hard being away from family,” Veronica said. “Thanksgiving
was a littler harder, but we met some friends up here, and had
dinner here at the House so it was really nice to have all of this
when family is away.”
With Christmas just weeks away, Hunter knows exactly what he
wants from Santa: “Dinosaurs! Books! Games!” he exclaimed.
His eyes lit up after hearing that Santa himself would be visiting
the House later this month.
Thanks to volunteers and generous donors in the community, the
House transforms into a winter wonderland during the holidays.
Families staying at the House are sure to have something to open
on Christmas morning because they are able to pick out gifts in
our Santa’s Workshop and the decorated trees that deck the halls of
the Ronald McDonald House bring much needed cheer to families
who are far from home.
“We are so grateful to be staying at the House,” Veronica said.
“They make it feel like home for us, and they really make each
day brighter for us.”
The Hayses waited for a compatible transplant and in September
they got word of a possible donor, only to learn it came from a
child with extreme lactose intolerance. Their hopes were dashed
and their limited resources were dwindling fast. They had been
living in a hotel for several weeks, a costly drain on their finances,
and they were running out of food.
The search was on for a warm roof over their heads, a place they
could call home while they waited for news of a transplant.
Fortunately, they found the Ronald McDonald House.
“The House saved us,” Bobby said. “We spent every dime we had

needed help the most, the Ronald McDonald House took us in.”
The opportunity to stay at the House couldn’t have come at a
better time, Veronica said.
“They are truly lifesavers. They helped us so much, and it means
everything. We don’t have to be on the streets. We can stay at a
nice place while we wait for Hunter’s transplant.”

Dear Friends,
Each year at this time as the outside temperature drops, I’m always struck by the amount of warmth that
exists just inside the doors of the Ronald McDonald House. Families are welcomed back to the House
each night by caring volunteers serving a warm home-cooked meal, decorations brighten every corner,
and even an occasional visitor like Santa Claus or Ronald McDonald stops by to cheer everyone’s spirits.
Most importantly, families of critically ill and injured children get to be together and celebrate the
holiday as a family.
We know all the families staying with us are wishing for a healthy child and to be at home celebrating
the holiday, but thanks to you and other caring friends, these families truly have a home-away-from-home
and a caring Ronald McDonald House family to help make this holiday season a little easier.
At the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana, children, like Hunter, and families like the Hayses, are so much more than the illness
or injury they are fighting against. Our families are our mission. And your support keeps them together when they need it most.
As the year ends and the holidays are upon us, please remember the families who are staying at the House and please consider

An evening of fine Mediterranean wines, food, art, entertainment and silent auction.
More than 350 friends, supporters, board members and volunteers of the Ronald McDonald
House experienced an evening of fine Mediterranean wines, food, art and entertainment at
“A Taste…Journeys to Spain” on Friday, Nov. 4 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.
The journey, which benefitted the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana, featured entertainment
by local favorite Cathy Morris with Erica Dominguez and World of Flamenco, foods filled
with vibrant aromas from Spain, Italy, France and Greece, and a variety of Mediterranean
wines, compliments of 4th year wine sponsor, Monarch Beverage Company. And crowd
favorite was the Mediterranean Marketplace Silent Auction, chaired by Elaine Shaffer,
featuring wine and cuisine experiences, trips, beautiful artwork and specialty gift items.
A big thank you to WTHR’s Anne Marie Tiernon, who served as emcee for the event and to
the “Taste” planning committee for providing guests with a memorable experience that took
them on a journey of all the senses.

AROUND THE HOUSE
While deployed to an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia, Chris
and his Air Force buddies collected pop tabs at their recreation center.
At the same time, his mom was collecting pop tabs in Denver. Now
back home, Chris and his daughter, Carly, recently stopped by our
House at Riley Hospital to drop off the thousands of tabs they collected.
The first annual Kicks for Kids soccer tournament
was a huge success, raising $20,000 for the House.
More than 600 spectators came to watch 41 teams
compete in the day-long event on Nov. 25 at Off
the Wall Sports in Carmel, IN. A big thank you to
Bill Gutrich with Coca-Cola who spearheaded the
planning and to Off the Wall Sports and CocaCola who sponsored the event.

The Ronald McDonald House of Indiana’s Young Professionals Board (YPB) hosted their
inaugural Happy Hour Trivia Bowl on Oct. 12 at the Elbow Room in downtown Indianapolis.
The sold out crowd tested their knowledge in categories like “Sheen vs. Ghaddaffi” and
“Happy Hour Math.” Competition was fierce, but in the end, one team rose to the top and
claimed the prestigious title of Happy Hour Trivia Bowl champion. Most importantly, a
great time was had by all and the event raised more than $4,500 for the House.

Indianapolis prepared and served a
home-cooked Thanksgiving meal for
families staying at the House.
Celebrating our Volunteers
Volunteers are truly the heart and
soul of the Ronald McDonald
House and make a difference in the
lives of the 1,500 families that come
through our doors every year. By
listening, nurturing and simply
being there, our volunteers help
support the parents and family
members while their children
receive treatment at Indianapolisarea hospitals.
On Friday, Sept. 30, we honored our
volunteers for their contributions at
the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.

LORI KLEIMAN AWARDS
Lori Kleiman was a very special volunteer valued for her generosity, creativity and compassion.
Since her passing, the House recognizes volunteers who most exemplify her dedication and values.
This year, the Ronald McDonald House presented the Lori Kleiman Award to Michael Rhinaman
and Mary Garrett.
Michael Rhinaman came to the House in
January of 2010. Not only is he consistently
present for his Thursday evening shift at the
Ronald McDonald House at Riley but he often
fills in as a substitute on other shifts. He
performs his duties with the utmost professionalism and has already moved into the role
of mentor and trainer for new volunteers.

Michael rarely misses an opportunity to assist
with one of our special events, and always
keeps the House top of mind having been
instrumental in arranging for the House to
receive a large quantity of office supplies
when National City Bank merged with PNC.
He also serves as one of our advocates when
funding opportunities arise with PNC. An avid
coupon clipper, he uses these coupons for
purchasing needed supplies for the House and
rarely arrives for his shift empty handed.
Mary Garrett began volunteering at the House 25 years ago in August 1986. She has been a
constant presence on the Saturday afternoon shift at our Limestone Street location for all 25 years. The
weekend staff can count on her to arrive on time, for every shift, with her lunch in tow.
Diligently and without fanfare, Mary joyfully does whatever needs to be done. If the office happens to
have adequate coverage, she can be found in the kitchens performing such glamorous tasks as cleaning
out the pantries and shining up the refrigerators inside and out.
To quote Mary herself, “I volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House humbly and with love in
honor of my ten healthy grandchildren.”

The Ronald McDonald House of Indiana provides a
supportive home-away-from-home for families of seriously
ill or injured children receiving medical care at Riley
Hospital for Children and other Indianapolis hospitals.

Help Share the Story of
the Ronald McDonald House
Throughout the year, the House receives numerous requests for speakers at various
schools, organizations and businesses throughout the state, and we host several groups
and individuals for informational tours of the House. We could use help in fulfilling these
requests and are looking for ambassadors interested in helping us share our story. On
Thursday, Jan. 19 and Feb. 16 from 6-7 p.m. we will be hosting two separate ambassador
training sessions in the conference room at our primary location at 435 Limestone Street.
Pizza and refreshments will be served! If you would like to serve as an ambassador for
