Basic information
Dopravný podnik mesta Žiliny s.r.o. (DPMŽ - transport operator) provides transport 24 hours a day, 7days a week on
the city transport lines in Žilina. There are 19 day routes (divided between 8 trolleybus routes and 10 bus routes) and
1 night route.
This guide provides you with all important information on travelling by Zilina public transportation.
Planning your journey
For planning your journey, please check the website www.dpmz.sk, where you can find travel timetables, a journey
planner as well as up-to-date information on changes in public transportion.
Tickets
For travelling by city transport routes, the tariffs are based on zones. Tickets for one zone are valid for a journey of up
to 5 consecutive stops by one connection (excluding the stop when you get on the bus). Travel tickets for two zones
are valid for an unlimited length of journey by one connection.
If you rarely travel, single (either non-transfer or transfer) tickets are most suitable for you. Conditions for the
transfer tickets: only one transfer/change is allowed, being executed within 30 minutes from the first ticket validation,
and both journeys have to be validated on the ticket. If you travel with hand luggage, you can save money by using
combined tickets.
If you travel often, you can save money by using prepaid tickets. For travelling at night (11:00 P. M. - 5:00 A. M.),
there is a night tariff. During this period, no fare reductions of paper tickets are valid. Prepaid tickets can be used for
night travelling. Tickets are sold at a number of locations (ticket machines at bus stops, contracted vendors and
DPMŽ ticket offices). If you do not buy a ticket prior to getting on the bus, you can buy a two-zone non-transfer ticket
from the driver for an extra charge.

Getting on and off the bus
Operating Hours (5:00 A.M. - 11:00 P.M.), getting on and off the bus is allowed by all doors. If you have a children
pram or a wheelchair, you can get on by the door marked by the respective sign (usually the second or third door). To
get off with the pram or wheelchair, notify the driver by pushing the button located next to the door twice.
At night (11:00 P.M. - 5:00 A.M.), getting on the bus is allowed by the front door only.
Ticket Validation
After entering the bus, do not forget to immediately validate your ticket using the validator next to the door.
Passengers with prepaid travel tickets are also required to validate their tickets. Upon entry, tourist tickets shall be
validated. Next to each bus door, there are one or two validators. Most of them can be used for validating both single
journey and prepaid tickets, however, some validators may only be used for validating single journey tickets.
To validate the single journey paper ticket, please insert the ticket into the slot in the direction of the arrow and hold
it there for a few seconds. On the validator display, you will see red lights and the ticket will be validated with relevant
data. Prepaid tickets can be validated by placing the chip card next to the validator at the designated place. After the
chip card has been validated, red lights appear there and the validator beeps. If you hold the chip card for a longer
period of time, you can check the number of remaining journeys and the validity of your card. The validator will beep
three times if the card was not validated successfully.
According to Slovak Act on the protection of
non-smokers (No. 87/2009) it is forbidden to
smoke in all busses and in the area of bus stops
and shelters as well as in the distance of up to
four meters from the designated platform.

Non-transfer ticket is valid after the validation in the bus as soon as
you get on the bus.
Tourist ticket is valid 24 hours after the validation in the bus. Validate the ticket
when first getting on the bus.
Transfer tickets are valid for two two-zone rides, both rides must be validated. The
change must be executed within 30 min. from the first validation. It is not possible
to change to a connection on the same route.
SMS ticket is valid immediately after receiving of the confirmation. SMS ticket is
valid for 60 minutes.

Prepaid and Electronic Ticket
Karta
Prepaid tickets and electronic tickets are only available using
chip cards. You can use the City chip card or cards of contracted partners
Every journey has to be validated using the validator on the vehicle. This
condition applies also to unlimited prepaid tickets. When changing within 30
minutes, only a half journey is deducted.
You can buy the City Chip Card at the DPMŽ ticket and information offices. The
card is valid only with the form of identification that was presented at the time of
purchase. Loading of journeys on the chip card is performed by the DPMŽ ticket
and information offices.
It is necessary to have the valid ticket during the travel and also at the time of getting off the vehicle!
The penalty fee can be decreased
depending on time of paying the
penalty.
SMS Ticket
SMS ticket you purchase by sending an SMS to the number 1155.
The ticket is valid 60 minutes after receiving the confirmatory SMS. It is
possible to get on the vehicle after receiving the confirmatory SMS. This
service is accessible from the phone numbers of Slovak mobile operators only.
