us next week,
J oin
on August 3, at Inn
on the Park, when we
welcome Dr. Roger
Bass to our Rotary
podium.
Baffling behavioral problems
associated with autism and
developmental disabilities have
yielded to scientifically-based
instructional procedures. For many
years autism and severe mental
retardation were usually given
bleak prognoses. Parents were told
to seriously consider
institutionalizing their children
because little could be done, and
the strain on families and finances
would be overwhelming. That is no
longer the case.
Techniques now exist that
often can ameliorate and
sometimes eliminate the selfinjurious behavior, delayed
language development, and
social-skills deficits exhibited by
such children. In his
presentation, Dr Bass will
demystify the complexities, use
video to illustrate parents’
realities, and place these new
advances in their larger scientific
contexts.
Dr. Bass is from UWMadison’s Department of
Studies in Behavioral
Disabilities. He obtained
degrees in education and
psychology, and took forays
into English, philosophy, and
the history of science.
Forty years ago, lectures on
Behavior Analysis became the
defining events in his
professional life. He has made
numerous presentations and
has published research on basic
human learning processes,
research methodology and why
effective instructional
methodologies are not more
widely adopted.
Members bringing guests are
asked to contact the Rotary
office by Tuesday noon (email
[email protected] or
phone 255-9164).

Survey on Funding Set for August 3
D
uring our Wednesday, August 3 Rotary luncheon, members
present will take a survey regarding preferences for funding of
projects and programs by our Madison Rotary Foundation.
Funds raised during our annual fund drive provide direct support
for our grants program. In addition, other member contributions and
fines collected plus five percent of a three-year average market value
of our general endowment fund are added to the amount awarded.
In determining the distribution of those funds, our Madison Rotary
Foundation surveys members every three years for guidance about the
nature of the programs and organizations they want to support
through contributions to our Foundation. This is your opportunity to
provide us with your thoughts on funding, so be sure to participate in
this important survey process.
The survey on August 3 primarily addresses the category of
community grants, and we are seeking your input on future grant
funding. This year’s survey also incorporates topics to assist us in
carrying out our club’s 2011-16 strategic plan.
To get you ready for the survey next week, review the information
below and become familiar with the current funds being distributed.
This information will help to prepare you for responding to questions
in the survey:
The Madison Rotary Foundation’s current policy for distribution funds is as follows: “Provision
shall first be made to fund the Swarsensky Award, Meade Community Service Award, Wilson
Youth Awards, Sophomore Class Project, Rotary Ethics Symposium, and the Rotary Youth
Exchange program. The funds remaining are allocated in the following percentages:
Community Grants 80%, Youth Awards 10%, and International Service 10%.” Using this policy
as a basis for distribution, the following is a breakdown on Rotary year 2010-2011 funding:
TOTAL RECEIVED FROM FUND DRIVE, FINES, OTHER MEMBER GIFTS AND
INTEREST =
$218,820
DISTRIBUTION AS FOLLOWS:
Pre-determined awards per policy:
Swarsensky Award Grant
$2,500
Meade Community Service Award
$500
Wilson Academic Improvement Awards
$1,050
Sophomore Class Project
$500
Ethics Symposium
$16,000
Rotary Youth Exchange Program
$4,150
Sub-total
$24,700
THIS SURVEY SEEKS YOUR INPUT ABOUT THE FOLLOWING AREAS FOR DISTRIBUTION:
of the remaining $194,120, the current policy is to allocate the amount as follows:
Community Grants, including Ehlers grants: 80%
$155,300
International Projects: 10%
$19,410
Youth Awards Program: 10%
$19,410
Sub-Total
$194,120
TOTAL DISTRIBUTED IN 2010-2011:
$218,820
Our Foundation has two other programs, outside of the grants and
programs described above, that have pre-determined designations
made by the donor or by board actions, and these programs will not
included in our survey:
1. Madison Rotary Foundation Scholarship program represents the
largest portion of our philanthropy and is distributed according to
a set of criteria. In 2011, $212,800 was awarded in four-year
college scholarship assistance to 22 scholars.
2. Our Foundation funded $45,584 in 2011 through the Goodman
Rotary 50+ Program, a fitness program for older adults in our
community.
Members not present on August 3 will be sent a survey, and the
deadline to return the completed form will be August 19.

Tropical Cookout At Maple Bluff
On Tuesday, July 19, members of our Culinary Arts
Fellowship Group attended a Tropical Cookout
demonstration at Maple Bluff Country Club. Executive
Chef Steve Hahn enchanted their culinary curiosity by
demonstrating key elements from all parts of the menu
including: Grilled Romaine Hearts with hand-made
Caesar Dressing, Grilled Shrimp Pizza, Grilled Lobster
Pizza, Grilled Margherita Pizza and Grilled Plantains
with rum sauce and Hand-made Cinnamon Ice Cream.
Our thanks to Phil Levy for organizing this fabulous
event!
