Philly Tribute Bands
Musicians That Truly Love What They Play
By: Krista Doran
The Philly area has so much to offer
along the lines of live music. Whatever
your taste may be, you can find something
to your liking and of course, here at The
Out On The Town, we bring you some of
the best and most diverse entertainers you
will see anywhere. We have been covering
the best live bands for years and have been
bringing our readers lots of choices in
where to go and who to see. As so many
of you already know, the OOT is the one
and ONLY place you can go to that will
give you some of the best choices in live
music today!
I wanted to switch gears a little for
this issue and give our readers something
different to think about, along the lines of
live music. There has been quite an uprising of Tribute Bands in this area and we
thought it would be a great idea to point
you in the right direction as to who to see.
Tribute Bands are a rare breed and work
extremely hard to bring their fans a musical experience that is as close as possible
to the real thing. Seeing a Tribute Band
gives you an opportunity to see a live band
playing music from some of your favorite
popular artists that you would not be able
to see otherwise. Many of these acts have
formed because of how much they might
enjoy the music of a particular artist. Or
perhaps some want to pay tribute because
their favorite band may no longer be
around or members may have passed away.
Whatever the reason may be, we are very
lucky to have such bands around that take
the time to do this for our entertainment.
Some of the more popular artists such
as The Beatles, Elvis Presley and the Rolling
Stones have literally hundreds of Tribute
Bands across the US, who put on sensational shows almost as spectacular as the
original. But right here in the Philly area
you have the opportunity to see many
truly talented and dedicated bands that
put on such great shows, you would think
you were listening to the real thing in a
more intimate atmosphere. Some of them
even look the part.
One
of the Tribute
acts that have
really been
making a
splash in our
area is Steal
Your Face,
who puts on
a fantastic
Grateful
Dead Show.
I had the
opportunity
to speak to Paul
Baroli, better
known as “Kahuna”
and
who is the bass player
for
SYF. Paul explained to
me that
it’s really the love of the music from the
Grateful Dead that inspired them to form.
“We love the Grateful Dead – that’s where
it starts and ends for us. We have always
been big Dead Heads and we love the fans
and the community that is the Grateful
Dead
experience.
It has
always
been
part
of us
and
we
just
wanted
to be
able
to
bring
that
music
to
everyone to
enjoy.”
Tribute bands, in many cases can
be the next best thing to seeing the original. Here are some great choices if you
think you would like to check them out:

Disposable Heroes (Metallica Tribute)

Hot Rocks (Rolling Stones Tribute)

There are also a few websites I found
that promote Tribute Bands: www.
gigmasters.com, www.tributecity.com . You
can go to these sites to see if there is a
particular Tribute Band you may want to
see in your area or even to book them for
a party or club event.
I give these musicians lots of credit for
what they do. Being in a tribute bands
means every note, every chord; every
nuance of a song has to be completely
accurate in order for the music to sound
authentic. You can’t get away with playing
anything other than note for note, because
people that come to see a Tribute Band
are true fans of the original and expect the
bands paying homage to be no less than
perfect. This is why it’s a great idea to go
see a Tribute Band. It’s always going to be
a great show!

CHUCK PROPHET HITS THE ROAD
SPREADING THE GOSPEL OF AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL
By Rob Nagy
For folk rock troubadour
Chuck Prophet success has
been a long, painstaking process. Looking very much the
seasoned hobo, Prophet is not
about visual image and glam.
The essence of his artistry is
one of highly intelligent and
deep lyrics accompanied by
unique and often obscure music that, more often than not,
captures the heart of Prophet’s
message. A cross between
Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Lou
Reed, Prophet has managed to
achieve that rare vocal style
that stands on its own merit,
something that very few artists
today are able to accomplish. You always know
a Chuck Prophet song when you hear it. Now,
on the heels of his latest release “Let Freedom
Ring”, Prophet and his band are back out on the
road spreading the gospel to whoever will listen.
Hailing from suburban San Francisco, where he
now makes his home, Prophet emerged on to
the music scene in the eighties as a member of
the psychedelic-roots band “Green on Red”.
In 1990 Prophet embarked on a solo career,
with the release of his debut “Brother Aldo”,
and has never looked back. Over the next
two decades Prophet released an astonishing
twenty solo and compilation records, building a
fan base that, to this day, has afforded Prophet
the means to play music fulltime. While Prophet
has maintained a level of obscurity as far as the
record buying public and mainstream radio are
concerned, he has earned the respect of a solid
cult following of fans and great esteem from his
fellow musicians. “I’m in an odd situation where
my catalog generates a little money here and
there”, says Prophet. “Occasionally I get work as
a producer and that’s good for paying the utility
bills. It’s a lot of little things and playing live is
just a part of it. People have asked me, ‘Are you
making a living?’ I have to answer them, ‘I’m not
really sure’. I have a job but I don’t know if I’m
making a living.”
A gifted artist on many fronts, Prophet can
certainly lay claim to being one of the most
diverse musicians in the business. In addition to
being an accomplished singer and songwriter,
he has worked as a side guitarist, bandleader
and collaborator with the likes of Cake, Kim
Carnes, Solomon Burke, Ernest “Boom” Carter,
Lucinda Williams, Jewel and the late Warren
Zevon. Kelly Willis and Boz Skaggs, among
others, have recorded versions of Prophet’s
songs. Prophet takes his success and struggles
in stride. “To wake-up and be interested in what
I’m doing and to get excited about singing and
making new records, to me that’s the gravy”,
says Prophet. ”I’ve definitely lost the plot a
few times and there have been times in my life
where I’ve thought, ‘Maybe I should try doing
something different?’ I’ve seen Dylan where he’s
gone through periods where he’s disinterested,
but he keeps showing up and then he gets it lit
again. You can get burned out but you can get lit
again. Reinvention, the opportunity to reinvent
yourself. If you’re not interested in what you’re
doing don’t think people don’t pick up on it.”
Prophet is quick to acknowledge and credit
much of his success to a Philadelphia institution
that routinely gives exposure to artists while
the mainstream record industry looks the other
way. “If there was a WXPN in every major
market of America I’m pretty sure my band
would be paid for”, says Prophet. “I don’t think
I’d be a rock star but I’m pretty sure my band
would be paid for. We really appreciate their
support and they’re cool. I really like the way
they’ve developed the brand. They remind me a
lot of the British in the sense they break a lot
of acts. People trust them enough that they can
really turn them onto stuff that people probably
wouldn’t be into otherwise.”
On his latest release “Let Freedom Ring”,
Prophet continues his poetic journey - offering
eleven songs that are real and true to themselves, with each telling their own story. Deep
lyrics and well thought out music, once again,
showcase Prophets rich talent and longevity as
an artist not to be taken lightly. He is clearly
a musical presence in the independent genre
with his best work yet to come. Standout tracks
include, “Let Freedom Ring”, “American Man”,
“Sonny Liston’s Blues” and “Hot Talk”.
On March 7, 2010 Chuck Prophet, in support
of his new album “Let Freedom Ring”, performed at the Sellersville Theatre in Sellersville,
PA. Fronting a four piece band “The Mission
Express”, consisting of his wife Stephanie Finch
(keyboards), Kevin White (bass), Todd Roper
(drums) and James Deprato (guitar), Prophet
casually entered the stage with little fanfare breaking into a lively and captivating ninety minute set featuring songs off his latest album and
some more obscure selections for the hardcore
fans. Highlights included “Would You Love Me”
from his “Soap & Water” LP, “No Other Love”
and a raw, stripped down version of “Summertime Thing”, both
from the “Pop”
album, and the
upbeat “Just to
See You Smile”
from the “Age of
Miracles” record.
Immediately
following his
concert Prophet
did a “Meet and
Greet” with fans
where he spent
nearly an hour
chatting, signing
autographs
and posing for
photos before
making the long
drive to North
Carolina for
his next show.
Prophet winds
down his current U.S. tour on
March 21st in
Austin, TX. For

With balls to the wall music

Sinners Saints, a hard rock band
from Philly, has been tearin’ it

Habits” which was produced by
Grammy nominated Producer
David Ivory and covers some of
the best tracks the band has to

This April the band sets out to
take on multiple shows
at one of their favorite
venues, Philly’s own
WHISKEY TANGO

largest crowds to date.
April 2nd is promised
to bring more energy

In the Nutshell
Lynn Ramage’
It’s been awhile but I’ve been overwhelmed lately with press releases and
CD’s to check out! I have to say out all
the PR companies that I’ve dealt with the
past twenty years that Roadrunner Records (hard Metal) and Alligator Records
(mostly blues) staff has been kicking Major
Butt with all their acts in terms of wanting
Media attention!
I received Rob Zombie’s latest CD “Hellbelly Deluxe 2” and if my fellow Zombie
fans out there loved “Hellbelly Deluxe
1” then you’re in for another equal treat
with good hits like “Sick Bubblegum”
and “What!” Rob will be touring with
everyone’s gore favorite “Alice Cooper” a
perfect match for a promising great night
at Camden on July 23, 2010.
Another favorite sent out is Megadeth’s
new “Endgame” also on Roadrunner and
Dave Mustaine’s gotten darker if that is
possible with hits “Head Crusher and 44
Minutes”. Who doesn’t love Megadeth”
I’ve been lucky to have interviewed both guitarist Marty Friedman and Al Petrelli and when
we thought it impossible for anyone to fill
Marty’s shoes. Holds on to your hats cause this
guitarist “Chris Broderick” really stands out
where you say to yourself “Holy Crap!” A show
surely not to miss as they will be playing “The
American Carnage Tour” in Camden on August
15, 2010 with Testament, and Slayer!”
I got an invite to go to a Special “RATT” release Party out in L.A. April 20th for their first
release “Infestation” in eleven years with all the
original members and that does mean Stephen
Percy at the mic. I had them all in at the Cellblock. Wow! It’s now coming up 15 years since
the fire too. I’ve been getting lots of emails to
throw another reunion together what do you
think? I think that is a yes folks. After all? There
is another Velvet Lounge Reunion on April 17th
at PaddyWhacks.
For my fellow Blues lovers Jonny Lang all
grown up releases his first Ever Live Album
“Live at the Ryman.” On April 20, pick up this
very well done and found on Concord Records.
Jonny’s voice is deeper and no longer cracks
recapturing some favorites like: “Lie to Me and
A Quitter Never Wins.” I hope we get a chance
to see him come around our area on his upcoming tour. Jonny always has a great show and
he is such a nice person too!
Also Iron Maiden will be going out with Dream
Theater no word on anything close to Philly
yet. For you old timers a guaranteed awesome
combo of Yes and Peter Frampton will be at
the Tower on June 15th. Jimmy Buffet is still
selling out tickets for his show in Camden on
August 7 and the 10th not sold out yet. A must
see show is “Sting” performing all his most
celebrated songs with the “Royal Philharmonic
Concert Orchestra” at the Susquehanna Bank
on Saturday, July 10. And for something really
really different but sure to please Lady Ga Ga
with her Monster Ball back at the Wachovia on
September 14.
I almost forgot that Lynam (are they local)?
will be opening for Cinderella who will be back
in town after how many years in April at the
EFC. We’ve did so much press support for that
band when they were coming up the ranks! .

‘Rockstar Rehearsal Studios Wants U 2 B The Next Rockstar’
Have you ever dreamed
of being up on stage in
front of a packed venue
with strangers screaming
out your name? Have you
ever wished you could
see your picture with the
words “Sold Out Concert
Tonight” beneath it? Have
you ever hoped that one
day you would become
the next big thing in the
music business? Have you
ever imagined you could
have a career doing what
you believe you were
born to do? Well, your
days of dreaming, wishing,
hoping and imagining are
over thanks to Rockstar
Rehearsal Studios.
At Rockstar Rehearsal
Studios in Blackwood
New Jersey they pride
themselves on making
your dreams come true.
Their mission is to create,
educate, teach, develop,
promote and book live
entertainers throughout
the industry from the
ground up. Their highly
trained staff shares their
own proven methods that
have helped them secure
rewarding careers in the
entertainment business for
many decades. They leave
no stone unturned as
they march you forward
towards your ultimate
goal of being a Rock Star.
I recently visited Rockstar and had the pleasure
of being educated in the
fine arts of the music
business through the eyes
and mind of Owner Nick
Casciano. Mr. Casciano has
been in the business for
over 20 years as both
musician and businessman.
In addition to
performing daily
with “The
Heartbeats” a
band he
founded
over 20
years
ago, he
also runs
Rockstar.
Nick told me he wanted to create a place
where live music could
be re-born, re-fined, reenergized but most of all
kept alive by all means
necessary. He said his goal
was to bring musicians
inside and teach them all
they needed to know in
order to succeed in the
entertainment business of
today. Mr.
Casciano
explained
in great
detail how
the business had
changed
over the
years and
that musicians needed to change
with it in order to survive. He said gone were
the days of just jumping
up on stage and doing
your thing because there
was so much more to
being successful these days
than just that. The music scene had become a
business so like any good

you have

Rockstar

When
you first step into Rockstar you’ll notice everything looks clean, works
properly and is completely
professional. You’ll also
notice the equipment is
fist-rate and the staff’s
as friendly as they are
knowledgeable. There are
two separate rehearsal
rooms with each one offering something different.
The main showroom is
within the music business
of today.
Rockstar Rehearsal
Studios has only been
opened since January but
already has been gaining a reputation as the
place to be if you want
to “Be A Rockstar”. A lot
of musicians dream of
making it one day in the
business but Rockstar is
tape all your promotional
needs as well. The other
room is a KISS themed
room full of KISS photos, signs, lights and even
life-size KISS mannequins.
They are in the process
of adding more rehearsal
rooms including other
themed rooms as well.
Rockstar also offers music
lessons taught by sea-
soned professionals.
In addition
to educating
bands on
rehearsing,
promoting
and recording they’re
also beginning to host
seminars
about the
business
of music. These
seminars
will be
held inside
Rockstar

most successful

Villari’s Bistro, Bar & Grill
800 Route 73 North, Palmyra NJ 08065 : 856-829-7373
In Review: “ CHEF WARS”
Villari’s vs. Scatturo’s
By Mike Vagnoni
On Monday March 15th, we had the chance to see two
of the best Chefs in South Jersey in action at Villari’s Bistro and Bar and Grill. They call it the “South Jersey Chef
Wars” .It is a great concept and to be honest, I never had
this kind of dining experience where two Chefs battle
it out in one night and you the patron are the judge. It
works like this; For a set price of $40 per person, you
get to sample a 4 course dinner which is prepared by
both Chefs. That night in the house was Scatturo’s Chef
David Levecchia vs
Villari’s Chef Paul Villari. They call this Chef Wars and
that is what it is...these two really put out the food and
when I said a 4 course dinner, in reality you are getting an
8 course meal since each Chef will make
up his version of a special dish. They serve you two
appetizers at once and then you taste it and then vote
on it. That is how it is...also the trick is you really don’t
even know who’s Item you are sampling. You only know
that one item is addressed as: (A) and the second item
is addressed as (B) .So there you are, this is what was
taking shape.. From the appetizers to the entrees to the
desserts. It is that easy. To me the easy part is just sitting
there and enjoying the food but the hard part? Well, to
vote on each item since the food was just so good all
around it was going to be fun seeing which Chef would
walk away as the winner for this Chef’s War.
Villari’s was packed that night and
for this battle, it was a sold out
event. I sat at a table with an old
friend
Frank Cioci, and a group of his best
friends. By the way, the reason I was
there to check this all out was on
the advice of Frank and I am gald
that he mentioned this to me.
First up was a Sweet Potato ravioli
and that battled a Sweet Potato
soup. These two appetizers were so
good, it was hard to pick which one
was the best. So for this round it
looks like the soup took the winning vote. From there it went to the
next serving. A Crab Cream Puff
vs a Crab Cake and then to the
entrees which were both Chicken
dishes. One was Stuffed Breast of
Chicken with prosciutto,spinach
and sharp provolone touched with
a wild mushroom demi glaze. The
other dish was Stuffed Chicken
with spinach and broccoli rabe and
roasted red peppers along with imported prosciutto, mozzarella with
wild mushroom rossitto.. These two
items were just out of this world. To
be honest each one was as good as
the other. Trying to pick a favorite
item here was really hard to do.
Now for the desserts: The first
one served was a Chocolate Pate’
with strawberries and flavored
whipped cream. The other dessert
was what they call a warm Chocolate Lava Cake -a complimentry
tulip filled with vanilla ice cream.
After the desserts we all waited to
see
what the vote would be. Again, none
of us knew what Chef was making
what - all we knew was that for
each serving - one was (A) and
one was (B). Then the announcement was made. The winner for this
Chef’s War was Chef Paul Villari.
Hats off to the staff at Villair’s and
to both Chefs for a great night of
excellent dining.
NOTE: The first time these two
Chefs did battle was over at Scat-
turo’s and on
that night of
the Chef War
their David
Levecchia took
the top honors.
So now it looks
as if there is
some kind of
a tie going on
here... I guess
we will have
to attend the
next one to
see what that
outcome will
be. When we
find out we will
let you know.

Lee, The Jersey Outlaw
recently ignited Las Vegas on fire with his huge
sold out show which
punched his career into
the “Stratosphere”. This
Live Show will be made
into a live CD that will
hit stores early spring
2010. This is one Jimmie
Lee CD that you don’t
want to miss!!
The Jersey Outlaw delivers powerful shows,
and performs live as
though his life depends
on it. No entertainer
on earth has ever been
more powerful in front
of the crowd, and Jimmie Lee needs nothing
more than his music!
Every new concert for
Jimmie is a new test,
a new challenge and
the stage becomes his
proving ground. Jimmies trademark country
horse powered sound is
still intact in each song ,
and our boy delivers.
The bad boy of country
rock opened the show
with “LETS GO”, a killer
‘in your face’ country
rock extravaganza that’s
an audience favorite!!
Jimmies concert included favorites as Kickin
Ass, Crazy Bitch, Forever 29, and he reached
into the attic for some
songs from his early
albums. Our boy kicked
it like nobody’s business
with an encore of his
best, Gimme A Holler,
Cross Country 4 Wheel
Drive, and closed the
show with his theme
song, Country Rocker.
A meaningful set ending
piece with the jive band
groove and evangelical
exhortations. The Jersey
Outlaw rides again, with
an uplifting, exhilarating
phenomenal show!! 5
Stars, Baby!!!
Jimmie has played last
year to sold out crowds
at the House Of Blues,
Atlantic City; Hard
Rock Cafe, Philadelphia;
Prospectors Saloon and
many more!!
Most recently, The Jersey Outlaw has teamed
up with HighRollerClothing to create the
Jimmie Lee Special Collector T-shirts. They are
available at www.highrollerclothing.com and
at all Jimmie Lee shows.
Expect big venues this
year as The Jersey Outlaw Road Tour hits the
ground running. Our
boys on fire and better
than ever. It’s a show
you must see!

Cherry Poppin Daddies are performing
in your area soon on tour.
CHERRY POPPIN’ DADDIES
TO RELEASE TWO ALBUMS IN
SEPTEMBER
In celebration of the bands 20th year in the
music business, Eugene, Oregon’s horn-heavy,
genre-bending, multi-platinum-selling Cherry
Poppin’ Daddies are giving store shelves a double
shot of musical goodness in September: both
“Susquehanna” and “Skaboy JFK: the Skankin’ hits
of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies” are scheduled
for release on September 29, 2009, on Rock
Ridge Music/Space Age Bachelor Pad Records. “Susquehanna” will finally receive its national release, as it was
previously only available on the band’s website, while
“Skaboy JFK” is a compilation of new ska tracks with
older Cherry Poppin’ Daddies ska songs (some of which
have been re-recorded) in a collection that comes off like
a classic of the genre.
Says CPD band leader Steve Perry: “We are excited
to be working with Rock Ridge Music on the release of
‘Skaboy JFK,’ because we have had a previous successful
working relationship with their CEO Tom Derr, while we
were both at Universal Records. Rock Ridge has done a
great job promoting and distributing Reel Big Fish records
(our ex label mates) and this record is directed at some
of the same markets, so it’s a perfect fit for us. We also
made a deal to have Rock Ridge distribute and promote
our 2008 recording, ‘Susquehanna,’ which had previously
not received distribution outside of our web site. This is
our coming-out party after a bit of a self-imposed hiatus,
and we are happy to be with a company with such great
industry bona fides.”
“As has been done by Steve and CPD, Rock Ridge again
sees the opportunity to break some ground, break some
rules, and break into dance,” says Rock Ridge Music CEO
Tom Derr about the upcoming Cherry Poppin’ Daddies
releases.
“Susquehanna” brings together the Daddies West Coast
retro style
and Latin
influences:
Flamenco,
Greaser
Rock, Swing,
Ska, Glam,
and Soca
to name a
few. The
album is an
experiment
in narrative
storytelling
through
shifting
genres. “I
wanted each
song to
come across
as a chapter
in a mod-
ernist novel,” Perry says of the record, “like James Joyce’s
‘Ulysses,’ where the literary style/genre that each chapter
is written in is radically different. So it’s a pop album,
disjointed, and maybe even jarring, in style and structure,
but it’s thematically coherent.”
Like their 1998 multi-platinum smash “Zoot Suit Riot:
the Swingin’ hits of…,” the new album, “Skaboy JFK: the
Skankin’ Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies,” will emphasize a single genre, this time the 60’s era up-tempo form
of pre-reggae Jamaican soul known as ska. “Skaboy” will
combine four new recordings with tracks from the group’s
earlier catalogue, reflecting all the waves and varieties of
ska: Traditional/Bluebeat (“2:29,” “Soul Cadillac”), Two Tone
(“Hammerblow,” “Skaboy JFK”), Third Wave (“Hi and Lo,”
“Sockable Face Club”). There are even funky Fishboneesque hybrids for good measure (“Slapstick”).
With “Skaboy” the Daddies plan to reconnect with a
ska audience that is largely aware of the band as merely a
swing band. “We toured with many of the iconic ska bands
when we were coming up,” Perry says, “like the Mighty
Mighty Bosstones, Fishbone, Reel Big Fish, The Specials,
No Doubt, and Madness, but at that time, we were really
touring behind ‘Zoot Suit Riot,’ so we didn’t play a ton of
ska in our sets. Now we will.”
Speaking of sets, the band plans to tour in support
of both albums, with tour dates to be announced soon.

this to say about the Eagles: ”I don’t like them at
