As the mighty Death Star moved into position to destroy the Rebel stronghold, everything depended on a small force of single-seat starfighters. Right: At the pilot briefing, Rebel General Dodonna showed his team of starfighter pilots how to penetrate the Imperial defences. T o avoid detection by the Empire, the Rebel Alliance was forced to move its base from planet to planet. At the time Princess Leia Organa was captured by Darth Vader, the Rebels had established a hidden base on Yavin 4, fourth moon of the Outer Rim world of Yavin. Here, they gathered a small force of starfighters and prepared for the arrival of the Death Star battle station, which had already destroyed the peaceful planet of Alderaan on the orders of Imperial Grand Moff Tarkin. targeting the weak spot As the Death Star neared, the Rebels’ crack starfighter pilots prepared to launch a desperate counter-attack. Their mission was masterminded by the Rebel military tactician General Jan Dodonna, and depended on crucial information brought by Princess Leia. Through espionage, the Princess had acquired blueprints for the Death Star, which enabled the Rebels to pinpoint the giant space station’s solitary weak spot, a small thermal exhaust port in a trench on the surface. Although only two metres wide, this port led directly to the station’s reactor core. General Dodonna realised that a small, one-man starfighter launched from Yavin 4 could penetrate ’It’s not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they’re not much bigger than two metres.’ Luke Skywalker 25 0 BBY 45 0 BBY 46 the bat tle of yavin The Bat tle of Yavin the Death Star’s defences. If just one ship could fire a single proton torpedo into the exhaust port, it would destroy the station. But the Rebel pilots had to act quickly, before the Death Star could move around the giant planet Yavin and get its own clear shot at the planet's fourth moon. The small force of Rebel starfighters ranged against the Death Star consisted of three squadrons – Gold Squadron, composed of heavily-armed Y-wings, Red Squadron, a group of fast and nimble T-65 X-wings and Blue Squadron. Once through the magnetic field of the Death Star, Gold Squadron swooped down for an attack run on the trench that contained the thermal exhaust port, while Red Squadron moved in to provide cover for their comrades, attacking surface turrets. Though Tarkin dismissed the threat of the Rebel fighters, Darth Vader recognised the danger. He ordered some of the station’s TIE fighters to engage the Rebel craft. Accompanied by his two wingmen, he flew his own fighter to engage the Rebels in the trench. The Rebel tacticians watched the progress of the battle on their viewscreens as Gold Squadron’s heavily armed Y-wings and Red Squadron’s agile X-wings neared the Death Star. Although the commanders could offer advice, the outcome of the counter-attack was entirely in the hands of their small band of starfighter pilots. As the Death Star neared its firing position, all Princess Leia and her faithful protocol droid C-3PO could do was wait and hope. Lightly built and heavily armed, the TIE fighters’ weapons and targeting systems were superior to the armaments of the X-wings. A graphic display at the Rebel base showed the Death Star’s field of fire in red as it manoeuvred around the giant planet Yavin to target Yavin 4 in the green sector. Although they were relics of the Clone Wars, and slower and less agile than the X-wing, the heavily armed BLT-A4 Y-wing fighterbomber was a vital part of the Alliance forces. During the Battle of Yavin, a squadron of Y-wings made the first run on the Death Star exhaust port. Though the Rebel pilots managed to score a few hits against the TIE fighters, they struggled against the sheer numbers of Imperial ships. Red Squadron continued to engage the fighters and cannons above the Death Star’s surface, while Gold Squadron was intercepted by a wing of three TIE fighters. Within minutes the Imperial ships, led by Vader himself, had almost completely wiped out Gold Squadron. covering fire. Once again, Vader’s wing of TIE fighters intercepted the Rebels, destroying the ships of Reds Ten and Twelve. Red Leader managed to battle far enough along the trench to fire a torpedo at the exhaust port, but his aim was off and he missed the target. Vader then calmly picked off the Red Leader’s ship, leaving only three Rebel fighters to make the final attack run. Divide and Conquer Under the advice of General Dodonna, Red Squadron broke into two wings of three pilots. The first, headed by Red Leader Garven ‘Dave’ Dreis, swooped in to attack the exhaust port. A pair of rocket boosters that allowed short-range flight saved Artoo on numerous occasions during the latter years of the Old Republic. However, they were removed at some point during his service with the Royal House of Alderaan, leaving him dependent on his motorised treads to move around. A s the crowning achievement of robotics giant Industrial Automaton, astromech droids similar to R2-D2 helped forge the company’s reputation for high precision merchandise and revolutionised robotics with their wide-ranging capabilities. In their tireless quest to keep ahead of arch-rivals Cybot Galactica, Industrial Automaton updated the astromech line with the R3 and R4, but none of them was able to improve upon the versatility of the R2 series, as R2-D2 proved with his legendary exploits. PERSONALITY traits Like any artificially intelligent robot whose memory is not wiped regularly, R2-D2 developed numerous personality traits that defined his character. Feisty and tenacious, Artoo drew upon these qualities to complete his assignments even against significant odds. He possessed an unswerving loyalty that exceeded his programming. However, despite his bravery, Artoo was a sensitive robot, capable of feeling lonely when abandoned and often worrying over the fate of his companions. 0.96 metres accessoriesCircular saw Computer interface arm Grasping arm Holographic projector Lubricant application arm Periscope Power charge arm Repair/welding arm Scanner antenna designIndustrial Automaton communications As astromech droids were not equipped for humanoid speech, R2-D2 could understand spoken commands, but was unable to respond. Instead, he communicated in a bizarre machine language consisting of a complex series of beeps, whistles and electronic sounds that emanated from his loudspeaker. This language enabled him to communicate rapidly and efficiently with other machines and, despite the speech barrier, Artoo could convey a lot of emotion in his strange dialect. BUILT TO LAST R2-D2 owed much to his sturdy construction and tough, durasteel shell. Designed to operate for generations, Artoo could function happily on land, in the vacuum of space and even underwater. His little body could also withstand tremendous punishment. In his many years of dedicated service, Artoo was stunned with ion bolts, blasted by stormtroopers, and almost reduced to scrap by Darth Vader’s TIE fighter. Easily repaired, Artoo always managed to bounce back – a testament both to his durability and tenacity. In 32 BBY, when the Trade Federation blockaded the planet Naboo, R2-D2 was one of a complement of astromech droids aboard Queen Padmé Amidala’s royal starship. art1 art2 r2-d2 (artoo-detoo) Artoo’s memory banks were able to store extensive data files, inputted via his data card slot, or uploaded directly from another computer. Artoo could record holographic messages with his main photoreceptor and then play them back through built-in holographic projectors. During the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War, this function made him an efficient courier, and an ideal receptacle for vital information during top-secret missions. The data card slot below the primary photo receptor was the quickest way to store information in R2-D2’s memory banks. Princess Leia was able to take advantage of this when she only had seconds to pass on the stolen plans of the Death Star. Artoo’s computer interfaces could be used to link directly with mainframe computers and other devices. When interfaced, Artoo could access files, download data, activate sub-systems and even override locked doors. This capability helped Artoo and his compatriots out of several tricky situations. art3 ds ne Dr oi s r2-d2 (artoo-detoo) & mac h i Astromech Droid design features R2-D2 was designed to undertake diverse tasks efficiently, from routine maintenance and cleaning to advanced starship repairs and astronavigation. S Operating from the droid socket of a Rebel X-wing, Artoo provided in-flight support for Luke Skywalker – as he had for Luke’s father a generation earlier, on board a Naboo N-1 starfighter. Artoo’s adventures included almost drowning and nearly being fried by blaster bolts in pitched battle. The little astromech’s high-capacity memory chip could store up to ten sets of hyperspace coordinates – or record data vital to the Rebel Alliance. tanding under one metre tall, like all R2 units, Artoo’s small, barrel-shaped body concealed a staggering array of mechanical apparatus that could be deployed on demand. The domed head contained the majority of Artoo’s sensory systems, including his primary photoreceptor, auditory sensors, infrared receptor, diagnostics and holographic projectors. The droid's most obvious ‘arms’ consisted of two exterior-mounted spacecraft-linkage devices that allowed R2 units to operate control systems. These droids also possessed multiple concealed manipulators, with interchangeable tips to undertake a wide range of tasks. A grasping claw, power charger, lubricant applicator and sonic arc welder were just some of the options in Artoo’s impressive arsenal. self-propelled This surprisingly mobile little unit travelled on allterrain motorised treads built into stubby leg supports. The treads could even be magnetically charged for clinging to starship hulls during deepspace repairs. A third, retractable tread gave Artoo a sturdy stance and enabled him to keep pace with his humanoid companions. If it was retracted, Artoo’s sturdy legs could reproduce a rudimentary hydraulic ‘walking’ action. Built-in power couplings allowed Artoo’s power cells to be periodically recharged, while cooling vents and exhausts kept his systems ventilated. Artoo’s repair skills saved the Naboo Royal Starship from certain destruction during the escape from the planetary blockade. Decades later he restored the hyperdrive of the Millennium Falcon in similarly desperate circumstances. art4 r2-d2 (artoo-detoo) EXTENDABLE SENSORS: The top of R2-D2’s domed head concealed a scanner antenna and periscope. Both could be extended upwards and rotated through an uninterrupted 360o field of view. When he was submerged in one of Dagobah’s swamps, Artoo was able to extend his periscope clear of the water, revealing his presence to Luke Skywalker. POWER-CHARGE ARM: As it was not built for combat, R2-D2’s built-in shock prod was non-lethal, but could deliver an electricity discharge powerful enough to make organic opponents think twice. It could be very dangerous to other droids when applied accurately. LUBRICANT APPLICATION ARM: Artoo’s lubricant application arm could be used to deliver fluid at high pressure. He also possessed a small reserve of extinguisher fluid that could be used to quell minor electrical and non-electrical fires. GRASPING ARM: Like all R2 units, Artoo’s main manipulator had a pincer claw, which he used with either delicacy or considerable force. It could also be extended to act as a steadying brace when Artoo was in danger of toppling despite his tripod support. COMPUTER INTERFACE ARM: Artoo possessed several types of interface arm, allowing him to communicate with a variety of computer systems to exchange data or issue command instructions. Rocket boosters: This pair of rocket motors was later removed, but originally allowed R2 to undertake shortrange flight. ROTARY SAW: Artoo found many inventive uses for his built-in tools, including using his saw blade to free him and his friends from a trap sprung by the Ewoks. Pilots dreaded the day their ships would be stripped apart from under them. Introduced late in the Clone Wars, buzz droids quickly came to haunt the nightmares of Republic pilots across the galaxy. I ntroduced around the same time as the droid tri-fighter, the pistoeka sabotage droids were designed to disable starships, not to destroy them – though the general effect in a pitched battle remained the same. When the CIS commanders wanted to capture a fleeing vessel and leave its living contents intact, ion fire was not always reliable – particularly if the target ship was appropriately shielded. Buzz droids got around this. Invasive Procedures The droids used a great many devices to cut, pry and smash their way into the vital systems of an enemy ship. The discord missile ‘detonated’ when in the flight path of the target, disgorging a clutch of sabotage droid spheres. The tiny droids – only a quarter of a metre in diameter – even had small manoeuvring jets to allow them to hit their targets. The heatdissipating alloy on the spherical shell of the buzz droid ensured that it could slip past a vessel’s shields, using a magnetic pad to secure itself to the hull. Pre-loaded with schematics of many of their opponent’s ships, the droids were murderously fast and efficient. Their creepy, insect-like appearance added to their fearsome reputation. The sabotage droids weren’t only used in the vacuum of space. On occasion, swarms of the droids were used to attack infantry, with horrifying results. Disgusting creatures.’ C-3PO jawas The desert planet Tatooine concealed many surprises, as did some of its strangest inhabitants – the metre-high, heavily cloaked desert scavengers with glowing yellow eyes, known as the Jawas. Wandering Jawa traders earned an irregular income by selling parts and equipment to Tatooine settlers such as moisture farmer Owen Lars. O n Tatooine, Jawas were as omnipresent as sand and, to many, just as irritating. Jawas were thieves, stealing anything and everything not tied, bolted, welded or otherwise held down. Jawas were unintelligent, uncultured and deeply misunderstood. They also stank, leaving a bad smell that lingered long after they’d gone. It was an unfortunate fact that Jawas were not the most attractive of creatures – in no small part due to the all-pervading odour they gave off. However, this was not the effect – as many thought – of the Jawas wearing heavy, roughspun cloaks in the boiling desert. Likewise, it would have been wrong to suppose that they had no sense of smell. In fact, Jawas had a very sensitive olfactory awareness, and could detect moods, state of health and even basic genealogy in other Jawas simply by their smell. It was certain that Jawas did not bathe. They lived in a desert, after all, where water was very scarce and needed to be conserved. Indeed, they used a special chemical mixture, into which their clothes were dipped, to retain moisture, and this chemical added to the smell. Underneath their cloaks, Jawas were deceptively skinny, almost shrivelled creatures, which xenobiologists surmised may have evolved from a species of rodent. Their lightweight bone structure and delicate feet and hands further reinforced that theory. However, Jawas and 25 Date: 0 BBY the holocron species Jawa height 1 metre (average) homeworld Tatooine affiliation Non-affiliated Vehicle Sandcrawler weapon Ion blaster jaw1 jaw2 jawas jawas Notable for their strong odour and their bright yellow eyes, the Jawas were perhaps Tatooine’s most mysterious inhabitants. By selling pieces of junk and scrap metal that they located amid the planet’s sandy wastes, the creatures made a humble living – despite the hostile climate and terrain of their desert world. As salvage experts, Jawas had an incredible ability to repair and refurbish the technology brought to the planet by settlers and visitors. Their grasp of the scientific principles behind the machines and devices that fell into their possession might have been tenuous at best, but that did not stop them from being able to salvage working components from even the most damaged parts. Sandpeople actually both evolved from the Kumumgah. Native to Tatooine, this technologically advanced species incurred the wrath of the Rakatan Infinite Empire who were responsible for turning Tatooine into a desert world many millennia before. Jawa Culture Jawas lived in huge family groups, and these clans often numbered many hundreds of individuals. The clan was headed by a female shaman who advised, and often effectively controlled, the clan chief and his or her elder advisers. The shaman was usually accompanied by her sole apprentice, who took over the post when the shaman died. Once every year, Jawas gathered at one sacred point in the desert, in the centre of the great Dune Sea, for a meeting that the human settlers of Tatooine called a ‘swap meet’. At these meetings Jawas traded everything from news and stories, to items of value, through to even their own children. Marriage trades between clans were very important, politically, socially and biologically. In the main, however, most trading was in technology. In the distant past, the Jawas rode on dewbacks, rontos and eopies. However, since a series of failed mining operations on the desert planet led to the vehicles being sold off at obscenely low prices or abandoned, Jawas took to travelling in massive sandcrawlers. Although the sandcrawlers were very large, and could carry around 300 Jawas, the majority of the clan remained in huge fortresses. The shaman, in particular, never travelled, even to the annual gathering in the Dune Sea. humans & aliens darth maul ans & a Darth Maul ns h um lie Date: 0 BBY ‘At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi...’ Darth Maul Darth Maul One of the most skilled and deadly warriors in Sith history, Darth Sidious’ apprentice was to be the first Sith openly encountered by the Jedi Order for more than 1,000 years. the holocron species Zabrak height 1.75 metres homeworld Dathomir affiliation Sith vehicle Sith Infiltrator Scimitar The deadly Sith apprentice’s looks alone struck fear into anyone who opposed him. weapon D ouble-bladed lightsaber B efore Darth Maul’s appearance, few believed the Sith still existed. As mortal enemies of the Jedi, the Sith had waged an unholy war against the galaxy’s guardians of justice and peace for millennia – almost bringing them to the point of defeat during numerous conflicts. But riven by internal conflict, the Sith were destroyed at the Battle of Ruusan… or so the Jedi thought. ‘Always two there are…’ Following their defeat, only one Sith master remained: Darth Bane. To preserve the order in secret, the Dark Lord decided that he would take only a single apprentice. Never again would there be more than two Sith Lords at one time. Subsequent Sith continued plotting without the knowledge of the Jedi, waiting for the opportunity to seize control of the galaxy. Over millennia, the once-feared Sith were almost forgotten, regarded as little more than superstition. Their covert operations went unrecognised until Darth Maul appeared during the Trade Federation’s invasion of the planet Naboo, the first open move in Darth Sidious’ plan to bring down the Republic. Phantom Menace Maul was born on Dathomir. The boy was destined to be a Nightbrother and virtual slave to the Nightsisters, ‘witches’ strong in a mystical offshoot of the dark side of the Force, but his Darth Maul was a male Dathomirian Zabrak, whose training as a Dark Lord of the Sith included mastery of lightsaber combat. 25 mau1 mau2 darth maul darth maul mother chose a different fate for Maul, giving him to Darth Sidious. Sidious was then himself an apprentice to Darth Plagueis, but was already plotting his ascendency to Sith Master. Sidious hid Maul on Mustafar, where the young boy was cared for by cold, unfeeling droids. Maul’s training, both by Sidious and his allies, was brutal. His final test saw his hatred explode, until he tried and failed to kill his master. In doing so, he passed and became a Dark Lord of the Sith. From then on, Maul was sent on a great many missions of infiltration and assassination. Some of his victims included Jedi, though Maul was careful that no evidence of Sith involvement remained. When Darth Sidious began the final phase of his plot to bring down the Republic, pushing the Trade Federation into blockading and invading Naboo, Maul stood ready to do his part. Maul Reveals Himself When two Jedi ambassadors from the Galactic Republic, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, managed to rescue Queen Amidala of Naboo and escape from the planet, Lord Sidious sent Darth Maul to hunt them down. Maul relished the task, as he had worked and trained all his life towards the day when he would face a Jedi in combat. He exulted in the challenge of being able to face two at the same time. Tracing the Jedi to the planet Tatooine, Darth Maul caught Qui-Gon Jinn off-guard as he was returning to the starship belonging to Queen Amidala. Maul flew at the Jedi Master on his Sith speeder with a ferocity that surprised the older man, and he almost got the better of the experienced Knight. Since the Sith had gone into hiding, the Jedi had met no opponent that could match Sith savagery. Mid-fight, Qui-Gon Jinn managed to leap aboard the passenger ramp of the Queen’s passing ship, speeding away before Darth Maul was able to follow him. The ferocious exchange at an end, the dark warrior stood watching from the desert as the Jedi escaped. Inspiring a feeling of dread in all who crossed his path, Darth Sidious commanded total loyalty from his menacing apprentice. The Sith apprentice’s programmable wrist link could be used to activate and control a huge variety of mechanical devices. Maul prided himself on his abilities as a tracker, using powerful tools such as his electrobinoculars and speeder bike to search for the Jedi on Tatooine. They were tied to global mapping scanners inside his starship and could be programmed to detect specific targets. If Jabba had sent Boba Fett, rather than Greedo, after Han Solo, it was unlikely that the smuggler would have left the cantina alive. But for the moment, the deadly bounty hunter was content to stand back, glowering while Solo negotiated with the Hutt crime lord for extra time to repay his debts. Although the true identity of Darth Maul was never fully revealed to them, it was apparent to the Jedi Council following the death of QuiGon Jinn that his mysterious adversary had been Sith. 26 mau3 h um darth maul ns darth maul an s & alie ‘Now it is your turn to die, young Jedi!’ Darth Maul The Final Encounter? The Dark Lord displayed unwavering courage, ferocity and skill as he battled with the two Jedi Knights in the Theed hangar. Only one of the three survived the epic encounter. Darth Maul proved too skilled a warrior for Jedi ambassador Qui-Gon Jinn in a fight to the death on Naboo. A fter learning that Queen Amidala had returned to the planet Naboo to lead an army of resistance against the Trade Federation, Darth Maul suspected that the Jedi were using the young Queen as a means for taking control of the conflict. He voiced his suspicions to his master, but Darth Sidious felt sure that the Jedi would not become involved. ‘We’ll handle this’ Maul’s suspicions were proved right when the Jedi assisted the Queen and a small party of Naboo troops to gain control of the hangar housing the Naboo starfighters. By the time he and Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn came faceto-face for a second and final encounter in Maul’s identity had remained a mystery to the Jedi since his appearance on Tatooine. However, Maul’s over-confidence led to his ultimate demise – minutes later he was slain by a grieving Obi-Wan Kenobi, distraught at the death of his Master. In the depths of the Theed power plant, Maul used the deadly electron ray gate to separate his Jedi opponents, defeating Qui-Gon Jinn with his double-bladed lightsaber before Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to race through and rejoin the fight. As Qui-Gon Jinn lay dying from Darth Maul’s fatal lightsaber strike, Obi-Wan Kenobi attacked the Sith warrior with renewed ferocity. In the ensuing exchange, Darth Maul was cut in half. His body vanished down a shaft to the reactor core. Maul’s Last Battle? Maul’s bisected body tumbled down an open shaft in the Naboo reactor. His body was thought to have been destroyed by the reactor’s energies, leaving the Jedi Council fruitlessly debating the identity of the assassin they thought to be dead. Due to its strategic position, it was the site of three different battles between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. the holocron RegionOuter Rim SystemFelucia system Diameter 9100 km Moons2 Terrain Fungal forests Native SpeciesFelucians Length of Year 231 days Length of Day 34 standard hours ClimateHumid AffiliationCIS, Galactic Empire Felucia’s dense, dank atmosphere encouraged the growth of thick forests of fungi and ferns that proved hostile to unwary visitors. During the Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker were sent to break the blockade of Felucia by General Grievous. The first battle of Felucia between the Republic and Separatists was hard fought but ended in near-disaster for the Republic forces. 25 F elucia was hot and humid, and much of the atmospheric moisture was faintly caustic to a degree that most of its flora and fauna evolved to be tough, rubbery and fibrous. The dark, cloudy skies, the muddy terrain, and the many caverns and tunnels meant that fungi and ferns were the dominant flora. Felucia’s lack of nutrients meant that many species of aggressive carnivorous plants also evolved on the moist, often mistbound world. All of the native life of Felucia had long adapted to the ultraviolet radiation from the system’s sun – also called Felucia. Many were translucent, to allow as much radiation as possible to pass through them. Some evolved reflective skin or carapaces, or even oily natural sun-screen. Other creatures and plants lived entirely below ground. dangerous aggressors A number of non-native species abounded on Felucia, though how some of them came to arrive there remains a mystery. To survive the violent native plants, animals and insects, they of course had to be aggressive and effective hunters. Acklay and rancor were not native to the world, but both did well there, feeding off the local arthropods, gastropods, invertebrates and avian species. Nearly 30,000 years before the Clone Wars, a guild of Gossam explorers – the Gossam Courivers – discovered Felucia and began the colonisation of fel1 fel2 Felucia felucia the planet. But as would be the case with most sentient visitors to the weird, colourful and deadly jungles of Felucia, the Gossam had found it to be an immense struggle to establish a foothold. It seemed that all the disparate elements of the planet’s ecosystem – the plants, animals, even the bacteria – were united in seeking to drive off the newcomers. The Living Force The unique fungi-jungles of Felucia held another wonder beyond the plants and creatures. Many of the life forms, including the Felucians themselves, were Force sensitive. This close connection to the Living Force was both a blessing and a curse, as the planet could be easily influenced by both the light and dark side of the Force. Unfortunately, events during and after the Clone Wars pushed the planet dangerously close to the dark side. During the Clone Wars, the Gossam Shu Mai was president of the Commerce Guild, one of the major Separatist parties. When she made Felucia the centre of Commerce Guild military operations, Shu Mai led the Republic to attack the planet – and to escape the conflict on their world, the native Felucians literally went underground. Jedi Master Shaak Ti was tracked to Felucia by Darth Vader, who sent his Sith apprentice Starkiller against her. Their vicious duel ended when the injured Shaak Ti fell into the Ancient Abyss. During the Second Battle of Felucia, an attempt by Republic forces to recapture the planet, the clone troops used AT-TEs to patrol the fungus forests. the jedi purge When the end of the war saw the issuing of the treacherous Order 66, a number of Jedi were killed on Felucia, including Aayla Secura. During the Jedi Purge that followed, Master Shaak Ti hid on Felucia, where she tried to ready the natives and her embittered Padawan Maris Brood for the inevitable assault from Darth Vader and the Empire. However, Shaak Ti was killed by Vader’s apprentice Starkiller, and Maris Brood and the Felucians fell to the dark side. Later, the Empire sought to wipe out the native Felucians, considering their Force abilities a threat. The planet’s pain would last for many years. The shamans, spiritual leaders of the Jungle Felucian species, were particularly sensitive to their Force-rich world and were amongst the most talented natural Force-users in the galaxy. During the Clone Wars, Jedi Knight Aayla Secura was leading a squad on Felucia when Clone Commander Bly received Order 66 from the Supreme Chancellor. Before the Twi’lek Jedi Master could ignite her lightsaber she was struck down from behind by her troops’ massed blaster fire. 26 fel3 ne ts & on Pla s Felucian wildlifefelucia ti Lo c a ‘All of Felucia’s inhabitants were susceptible. All were on the verge of becoming monsters.’ Proxy Felucian wildlife The world of Felucia was, while teeming with life, one of the more inhospitable and unusual worlds in the galaxy. Bathed in intense ultraviolet radiation, it was home to some completely unique flora and fauna, including some familiar hostile creatures. galaxy. Numerous mature sarlacci were present on Felucia, including the largest specimen ever recorded. It inhabited an area known as the Ancient Abyss, where it grew to cover many square kilometres and achieved a degree of sentience beyond that of its brethren. The sarlacc was so large that the native Felucians were able to use it as a (relatively safe) refuge from the Empire – although it was capable of using its tentacles to drag even the largest rancors into its maw and devour them. While most of Felucia’s native flora posed a danger to the unwary, nysillim plants were cultivated for a powerful spice that made them one of the most valuable crops in the galaxy. E ven before larger predators arrived on the planet from other worlds, Felucia had its fair share of native species that were able to maim, dismember and destroy the unwary. The Yerdua Poison-Spitter, a semi-sentient plant with animallike characteristics, spat poison and was trained by the Felucians to guard their territory. The planet’s spore plants puffed out clouds of spores that suffocated and poisoned nearby creatures. Spike plants hurled spines at anything that touched them, while numerous varieties of pitcher plants just drowned anything falling into their inviting maws. And then there were the animals… visitors from space The rancor population on Felucia had been brought there tens of thousands of years before the Clone Wars. 27 Not all new arrivals found Felucia hostile. The seeds of the sarlacc drifted in from space to discover a world that allowed them to grow to a size unseen anywhere else in the fierce predators Along with the the equally aggressive and dangerous acklay, the rancor had been successfully transplanted to Felucia, most likely brought there during a time 25,000 years before the Clone Wars, when the planet was part of the empire of Xim the Despot. The acklay had adapted perfectly to hunting in Felucia’s lush jungles and subterranean waterways but the semi-sentient rancor were quickly domesticated by the mysterious native Jungle Felucians. The rancor’s fierce, predatory nature has fascinated many. They originated on the Outer Rim planet of Dathomir, and on Felucia, the imported rancor population formed a bond with fel4 Felucian wildlife felucia The jungles of Felucia included forests of giant purple fungi so large and strong that small starships could land safely on them. The sarlacc that inhabited the Ancient Abyss was the largest specimen of these dangerous life-forms ever recorded. the natives similar to that of the Witches of Dathomir. The natives of the fungus jungles were Force sensitive, and were heavily influenced by the ‘mood’ of their living environment. The rancor of Felucia, who had less access to prey than they did on Dathomir, resorted to eating certain fungi. As a result, they too could be affected – though more slowly and with more lasting effect. A perfect example of this was the bull rancor that was adopted by the fallen Jedi Padawan Maris Brood. The Bigger They Are… The rancor that formed a bond with Maris Brood was taller and bulkier than many of its fellows on the planet, and had a longer tail. However, its immediate striking feature were the four horns that curved out like great tusks from its face. Also, the head was fringed with spikes, and its skin was a sickly, pale colour, as opposed to the usual healthy green. The Felucians regularly painted their mounts using fluorescent natural dyes, but the bull rancor befriended by Maris Brood required no such theatrics to make it look fiercer. When Maris Brood’s master, Shaak Ti, died duelling with Darth Vader’s apprentice Starkiller, her Padawan fell to the dark side. The Felucian people and the flora and fauna nearby were caught up by this fall, and this, coupled with the bull rancor’s diet, may have helped mutate the beast. Maris Brood used her pet to patrol her domain in the ‘rancor graveyard’ on Felucia, but the rancor was destroyed when Starkiller returned to Felucia to rescue Bail Organa from Shaak Ti’s fallen apprentice. Off-world visitors, including the Republic's clone troops entered the dense forests of Felucia at their peril. 28 p on lo g Wea y Darth Vader’s Lightsaber s & tech no ‘I’ve been waiting for you, Obi-Wan’ Darth Vader Weapons & technology Darth Vader’s Lightsaber Date: 4 BBY Darth Vader's Lightsaber The Sith Lord’s weapon, built by his own hand, was in many ways superior to a comparable Jedi lightsaber. W hile similar to the lightsabers carried by the Jedi and Sith before him, Darth Vader’s lightsaber had its own distinctive look. Unusually, the Sith’s lightsaber was fitted with a dark blade emitter shroud which protected the wielder. As well as having all the normal attributes, such as a power cell embedded in the handgrip, an activation lever, a recharge socket and a belt clip, Vader’s weapon was also constructed with a diagnostic system. The Sith Lord also added a blade length adjuster and a blade intensity control, allowing him to adapt his weapon to any given opponent or situation. Force of Nature Vader’s lightsaber was assembled by hand, as there is no exact formula for the crucial alignment of the crystals that focus the beam. The weapon operated on the principle of tightly controlled arc wave energy, requiring focusing elements made from precisely cut and positioned crystals. 25 lig27 lig28 Darth Vader’s Lightsaber The slightest misalignment during the construction of the weapon would have caused it to detonate upon first activation. The pure red energy blade emitted by Vader’s weapon had no mass. The electromagnetically generated arc wave created when the blade was ignited caused a strong gyroscopic effect that made the weapon a distinct challenge to handle – a challenge to which only Jedi or Sith could rise. Jedi Killer Darth Vader was more than content to cut ObiWan down when the other simply stopped Darth Vader’s Lightsaber fighting. Kenobi’s body vanished as he became one with the Force, but this did not concern Vader overmuch, so viciously delighted was he at avenging his defeat on Mustafar. Following Kenobi’s death, Vader faced off against Luke Skywalker on Mimban and on Bespin’s Cloud City. There, seeking to recruit Luke to join him against the Emperor, he severed the young Jedi’s right hand before telling him of his parentage. Vader again came up against Luke Skywalker a year later on the second Death Star, and lost his lightsaber when Luke cut off his sword hand. The redeemed Sith Lord would never wield a lightsaber again, dying from injuries sustained when he killed Emperor Palpatine to rescue his son from certain death. As the blade of the Dark Lord’s lightsaber reduced his former Jedi Master to nothingness, Vader’s relationship with Obi-Wan Kenobi seemed to have come full circle from Mustafar. The Dark Lord’s victory proved that he was now the master, both of the lightsaber and of the Force itself. During Vader’s lightsaber duel with Luke Skywalker on Bespin, the Dark Lord easily vanquished the much less experienced young Jedi. Vader struck off Luke’s hand, literally disarming him. 26 lig29 p on lo g Wea y Darth Vader’s Lightsaber Darth Vader's Lightsaber s & techn o ‘You cannot hide forever, Luke.’ Darth Vader development process Blade Emitter Shroud Lightsabers have often told the story of their owners. The one belonging to Darth Vader was no different. T he lightsaber Darth Vader wielded when he slew his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, was reminiscent of the one he had carried decades earlier as Kenobi’s Padawan, Anakin Skywalker. The one major difference between the Sith Lord’s lightsaber and the original he had built under Obi-Wan Kenobi’s tutelage was that the later weapon was mostly black, matching the fearsome armour of its intimidating owner. The lightsaber Vader had originally wielded as Kenobi’s Padawan learner was constructed while he was in a trance-like state. The result was a superior design that favoured maximum strength for the wielder. In constructing that weapon while a member of the Jedi Order, Anakin had broken with years of Activator Assembly Blade Length Adjuster Blade Power Adjuster Sith Crystal Chamber Switch Perhaps the only occasion when Vader’s mastery of his awesome weapon failed him was when he came up against his own son, Luke Skywalker, for the second time, and was defeated. Handgrip 27 lig30 Darth Vader’s Lightsaber established Jedi tradition by not building a weapon resembling his master’s lightsaber. the dark side The habit of making a lightsaber unlike his master’s was one that Anakin would continue after his fall to the dark side of the Force. As Darth Vader, he was given a deep red synthetic crystal by Emperor Palpatine to power a new lightsaber worthy of a Sith Lord. Palpatine even let his apprentice borrow his lightsaber as a model to copy. Darth Vader chose not to base his weapon on so ancient a device. His new lightsaber instead resembled a matt black version of his earliest Jedi weapon. However, thanks to his enduring desire to tinker with technology, Vader’s lightsaber went through a number of modifications during his years as Palpatine’s apprentice. Darth Vader’s Lightsaber Hand-built by the Dark Lord himself, the weapon was like no other. Unlike Jedi lightsabers, it was fitted with a dark blade emitter shroud, ensuring that the wielder could not be harmed by his own weapon. Vader used synthetic crystals in his first lightsaber, later swapping to a red Adegan crystal. the holocron: ADEGAN CRYSTALS The construction of the first lightsabers would have been impossible without the use of rare Adegan crystals. Found on the Outer Rim planet of Adega, the crystals emitted potent bursts of energy and light and were soon put to use in the Jedi weapon. Their power was unlocked when electromagnetic waves of the correct frequency were transmitted through them. Synthetic Primary Crystal Darth Vader lost his lightsaber and mechanical right hand when he was defeated by Luke; a victory the young Jedi took, ironically, after almost giving in to the dark side of the Force. 28 hip cl Sta rs es Starships & Vehicles s & Ve hi ‘What a piece of junk!’ Luke Skywalker mil1 millennium falcon Date: 0 BBY millennium falcon This battered but unique vessel had the honour of being present at the destruction of both Imperial Death Stars, and was in many ways something of an icon of the struggle between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. O nce called ‘the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy’, the battered freighter known as the Millennium Falcon became notorious throughout known space. A heavilymodified Corellian Engineering Corporation YT-1300 Transport, the Falcon was most famously crewed by roguish smuggler Captain Han Solo, and his Wookiee first mate, Chewbacca. YT-1300f light freighter After Han Solo saved his life, Chewbacca, an expert pilot in his own right, became permanent first-mate aboard the Millennium Falcon. Solo liked to boast about the time that he set the 12-parsec record for the Kessel Run. The Run was across a treacherous area near the spice-mining world of Kessel so warped by black holes and stellar phenomena that the distance travelled actually varied with the skill of the pilot. The beat-up shell of the Falcon’s saucer shape enclosed a very basic interior, featuring exposed components and circuitry. The ship’s cockpit pod was mounted on the starboard side of its hull, with its freight bay beneath the six cargo hatches on the upper hull. A pair of tooth-like docking mandibles at the front of the vessel allowed it to lock onto most standard cargo transfer stations, while a strong landing claw (right) could be deployed from the ventral hull to facilitate landing on low-gravity worlds or docking with larger starships. Built 60 years before the Battle of Yavin, the ship that would one day become the Millennium Falcon began life in the Orbital Assembly Facility of the Corellian Engineering Corporation as a stock YT-1300f light freighter. It was owned by both legitimate and illegal operations before it was christened the Stellar Envoy in around 29 BBY and was used in undercover operations by Senate and even Jedi operatives. During this time it met with an accident over Nar Shadda and was dumped in an orbital junk yard there. Rebellious Ship Rebuilt and renamed by technician Bammy Decree, the Second Chance became a smuggler’s ship. Impounded by the Imperials, it was stolen by Rebel agents. Briefly called Gone to Pieces, the vessel was flown for a time by Quip Fargil. It was he who called the ship the Millennium Falcon. In 9 BBY, Fargil pulled out of a Rebel operation and ran. The Falcon was given away, then sold to a travelling circus. Finally, it fell into the hands of Lando Calrissian. When he won it, the Falcon already had a reputation for speed (and chronic unreliability). As she was the fastest ship in the fleet, Han Solo insisted that Lando Calrissian flew the Falcon at the Battle of Endor. A Lucky Win Although Han Solo was proud of his ship, there were times when her minor breakdowns turned into major crises. Fitted with a powerful drive system that could match the 80 MGLT speed of an Incom T-65 X-wing fighter at sublight velocities, and an uprated Class 0.5 hyperdrive that could outrun Imperial Star Destroyers, the Falcon was no ordinary starship; even in a planetary atmosphere, the ship’s boosted engines were able to achieve speeds of up to 1050 kilometres per hour. Famously, Lando lost the Millennium Falcon to Han Solo in a high stakes game of sabacc on Cloud City. After making extensive modifications to the vessel at a secret shipyard on Nar Shaddaa, Solo and his Wookiee co-pilot travelled extensively throughout the galaxy, frequently within the Corporate Sector Authority’s domains. The ship eventually became part of Jabba the Hutt’s smuggling fleet, running spice under the noses of Imperial agents. After falling in with the Rebel Alliance, the Falcon played a key role in the destruction of the first Death Star at the Battle of Yavin. Later, commanded by Lando Calrissian and his Sullustan co-pilot Nien Nunb, the Falcon also struck the killing blow to the second Death Star. rs hip FRONT VIEW cl Sta millennium falcon es mil2 s & Veh i Quad Laser Cannon Forward Floodlights ‘She may not look like much. In keeping with Captain Solo’s often unorthodox methods, the Falcon’s best defence was a good offence. While most YT-1300 freighter variants were only lightly armed, she was equipped with two racks of concussion missiles, a rotating auto blaster cannon that could be deployed from a ventral hatch, and two quad laser cannon turrets on the dorsal and ventral hulls. Although the YT-1300 ships can commonly carry up to 100 metric tons of cargo, six passengers and as many crew, Captain Solo generally flew the ship with only himself and Chewbacca aboard.
