Entry fees are $100 per competition except for new talent which is $75
and Last Salon Standing which is $500 to enter.
GENERAL RULES FOR ALL HAIR COMPETITIONS

Models must wear capes during cutting and styling.

Models must refrain from using blow dryers or arranging hair with fingers.
When asked to move a model to a staging area to be judged, the competitor will be given 1 minute
to adjust the neckline that may have moved in transferring.
Coaching from the audience will result in demerits of -5.
Judging for all hair competitions is based on the following criteria:
a) Competition Quality/Technical Excellence
b) Suitability to the category and model’s head and face structure
c) Degree of new creativity
d) Use of colour to enhance haircut and style
All scores are based on the international system, ranging from 30 –20 points.
All competitions are open to all levels of experience including students, apprentices and
professional stylist.

Sages on the competition floor will give demerits. Commissionaire will review demerits and a collective majority will result in the final demerits to be

GLAMOUROUS EVENING MAKEUP - ON A LIVE MODEL
Going out on a romantic elegant evening or attending a special exciting night time party, this competition allows the makeup
artist to create a glamourous evening make-up design suited for a real woman who’s desire to look attractively beautiful and feel
glamorous. The make-up should reflect the artist’s own interpretation as to how to enhance cosmetic highlights; contour and
shades for the models face structure, features and coordinate with the Glamorous Elegant Evening theme.
This competition is open to ALL LEVELS of experience of esthetician, cosmetologist, make-up artist, hairstylist, student, or
professional, with training and experience in makeup artistry.

REPORT TO FLOOR: Models must report to their positions with the face cleaned and free from the neck up of any
cosmetics, moisturizers, and any type of false lashes. EYE LASHES MUST BE APPLIED DURING COMPETITION TIME
failure to apply eyelashes will result in -2 demerits. Model must be draped and ready for the competition.
(Demerit -1 to -3)
Competitors will be removed from competition floor after they have set up their workspace to allow Judges to prejudge
models face prior to makeup application. Upon the time the judges complete their previewing the competition will begin.
2.
TOOL AND PRODUCT: The competitor will provide all working tools and make-up and be responsible for his/her own
model. (Demerit -1 to -5)
3.
ASSISTANTS: No assistants are allowed to assist on the floor and the use of a makeup chair during the competition
is not allowed. Talking between the artist and the model is allowed, softly and professionally without being disruptive
socially.
4.
HAIR: Model’s hair must be100% pulled back off the face and secured prior to arriving to the competition floor.
(Demerit -2)
5.
CLOTHING: The model should be dressed in an evening, elegant, glamourous, romantic attire in keeping with the
makeup and competition theme. (Demerit -2)
6.
TIME: This competition is 40 minutes long.
7.
JUDGING: will be on these four criteria:
Technique
Corrective application
Color enhancement
Total fashion effect and overall presentation

SCORES: Judging will be done on the finished look, on a 30-point system

demerits and a collective majority will result in the demerits to be handed in to the tabulator by the floor commissionaire. The tabulator will deduct the
demerits from the final score.

WOMEN’S BRIDAL LONG HAIR - ON A LIVE MODEL
Wether embellished, sleek/slicked back, pulled high and tight or worn half up/down in loose curls or waves this is a Women’s
Bridal Long Hair competition. We will be looking for runway inspired bridal hair that fits “Real appeal to the everyday brides
wedding hair.” The competitor and model will arrive to competition floor with STRAIGHT HAIR, not fixed, styled or set in any way
in advance demerits will result if this rule is not followed.
The competitor will be asked to brush through hair in the presence of the commissionaire and or sages during the pre-check of
models hair.
This competition is open to all ages. Demerits will be given for any resemblance of International Fashion Long Hair and or attire.
Competitors may use scissors during the competition to clean up ends only. No length may change.
1.
Hair Length: The Hair must be shoulder length or longer, layers are optional and the minimum length in layers must
be 10 cm. Bang area can be shorter no deeper than 2.5 cm
2.
Colour: The use of all colours are free. Keeping in mind todays newest trends and design principals for brides hair.
No sprays, chalks or pens of any kind may be applied on the competition floor.
3.
Products: All styling products are allowed.
4.
Styling Tools: All styling tools are allowed.
5.
Supports: The use of any kind of supports in this hairstyle are not allowed.
6.
Hairpieces: Hairpieces are not allowed.
7.
Ornaments: Ornaments are allowed and must fit the bridal theme. Keeping in mind todays newest trends and design
principals for a bride.
8.
Extensions: Hair extensions are allowed and must be added prior to coming on the competition floor.
9.
Clothing: Total bridal design for a real everyday brides wedding attire.
10. Demerits: Competitors who do not follow the instructions above and follow the General rules and Competition Demerit
Outline will be penalised by sages in consultation with the floor commissionaire and ALL DECISIONS ARE FINAL.
11. Competition Time: 30 min
12. Scores and Judging: Max 30 points, Min 22 points. Judges will use the Guidelines for Ranking, Four step criterion:
Composition Quality/Technical Excellence, Suitability, Creativity and Colour and Model/Mannequin presence.

ABA’S BATTLE OF THE BARBER - CREATIVE FREESTYLE ON LIVE MODEL
There are no limits to this competition. Bring your best Flat Top, Mohawk, Fade, Tattooing… Judges will be looking for
workmanship, creativity, imagination, degree of difficulty and execution of an original idea. Pre-colour and art colours (i.e.
makeup, spray colours, hair paints) are permitted.
Competitors will have 35 MINUTES to complete. Models MUST be over 14 years old.
ABA’S BATTLE OF THE BARBER RULES
1.
All competitors must bring a live model and barbering tools in order to participate. Both the barber and the model
must sign a waiver/model release form (available at check-in) in order to compete.
2.
All models hair must be cut at the competition. Light colour sprays, coloured pencils and hair chalks are allowed.
Barber must show a transformation in the model’s hair. The Sages will pre-inspect models hair during pre-judging or
during check-in. Violation of the rules will result in a deduction of -5 points and/or disqualification.
3.
NO STRAIGHT EDGE RAZORS AND/OR RAZOR BLADES ARE PERMITTED IN THIS COMPETITION.
4.
All competitors must check-in with their models at least one hour prior to the battle.
5.
Judging will be conducted on a visual basis only. Judges will use the 30 point scoring system.
6.
There is a limited space available, so competitors will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

WOMEN’S TREND CUT & STYLE (PROFESSIONAL LEVEL) - ON A MENNEQUIN
In this women’s trend competition we are looking for today’s newest contemporary, modern well designed and executed haircut.
The competitor has the freedom to create a total haircut and style on a mannequin, include fashion that any women who
follows the newest runway trends would love to wear. This style may have some progressive elements, must show excellent
workmanship in technical haircutting skills and the stylist should think of the colour choice and their placement as accents to
emphasize their design. The combination of technical excellence in the cut, supported by the colour and the quality of finish
are extremely important design elements in creating a winning look.
Hair extensions are allowed. The addition of hair extensions provides the stylist the opportunity to further express their
creativity. The sages will demerit -3 to -6 for extreme or avant-garde and full fashion hairstyles for out of category.
Competitor must use a tripod (NO TABLE CLAMPS ALLOWED) The competitor has the freedom to choose any type of
mannequin. It is recommended that the stylist consider a competition quality mannequin. Although it is recommended that the

This competition is open to any Licensed Professional Hairstylist.
1.
START HAIR: The competitor has the choice to start on wet hair or dry hair. Hair must be brushed in the presence of the
sage prior to the competition starting.
2.
HAIR LENGTH: One inch (2, 5 cm) of hair must be cut throughout the entire head. Failure to do so will result in up to -5
demerits. The sages will physically check hair length before and visually during the competition to assure that the length
has visibly changed. The cut may be shorter or longer lengths, but must suit the mannequin face and trend category.
3.
HAIR COLOUR: Any commercial colours are accepted. It is recommended that the stylist consider the newest trends for
colour and placement as accents to their style. The use of bright or neon colors must not exceed more than 30% of the
overall finished look. The choice of colors is a vital part of this composition and should only reinforce the technical
excellence of the haircut and finished style. The uses of any kind of gels or spray colour on the competition floor are not
allowed. Sages will demerit -3 if this rule is not followed.
4.
HAIR EXTENSIONS: Up to 25% hair extensions may be used to add length, colour or volume, but must be bonded prior
to coming on the competition floor. No extensions with clips of any type can be used. Sages will demerit -5 if this rule is
not followed.
5.
TOOLS AND PRODUCTS: All hair-cutting tools may be used. Trimmers / Clippers are permitted. Must be clipper over
comb. HOWEVER the use of clipper guards/blades of any other type that measures the length of the hair are
forbidden. All hand held electrical tools are allowed to finish hair style.
6.
CLOTHING: Must fit with the overall theme of today’s newest trends. Competitor has the freedom to dress the entire
tripod. The fashion design is considered as part of the overall interpretation of the theme Women’s Trend. Sages will
demerit out of category attire.
7.
COMPETITION TIME: 45 minutes. Judges will score on Composition Quality /Technical Excellence, Suitability, Creativity
and Colour, Mannequins Total Trend Presentation.
8.
DEMERITS: Please refer to the general rules for all other regulations and demerits. Sages on the competition floor will
give demerits. Commissionaire will review demerits and a collective majority will result in the final demerits to be handed

THE LAST SALON STANDING COMPETITION INFO & RULES
A Wondrous Collection; Ignite Two Extremes; Fantasy Vs Reality
Ignite the creativity with in your salon. Express your teams imagination conceptualizing an extravagant, unrestrained improbable make believe
fantasy total look design on a live model. Then take your creativity to another level at the same time, on a different live model allow your
team to express their artistry and present the opposite to your fantasy “reality”. Dare to be creative and unlock the possibilities within your
imagination and create an edgy more wearable editorial total look design inspired from your fantasy presentation. Prepare 2 models
together who will perform Your Wondrous Collection in a theatrical performance and Ignite two extremes.
This competition is open to the first 12 salon teams to register. (Teams can have no more than 5 team members and 2
presentation models). Fantasy design; no full wigs and no nudity otherwise completely unrestrained freedom to create. The team has
the freedom to unleash their theatrical fantasy imagination and create a total fantasy design. Editorial design must use Models own hair.
Extensions allowed to create length volume and add colour but cannot cover more than 25 % of the entire head form. The team has the
complete freedom to re-create inspired from their fantasy creation a more real, wearable editorial style.
RULES:
JUDGING will be based on a total of 100 marks, be at close range to evaluate technical excellence and workmanship and at a distance to evaluate the
total look and co-ordination of a theme and collection.

1. MODELS: will report to competition floor completely prepared prior to arrival with the opportunity for minor touchups and ready for stage presentation and
cat walk. Model must be able to catwalk by themselves. Teams will be asked the name of their collection Models will be provided with a number card
which must be displayed in clear view for judging and audience identification.
2. HAIR LENGTHS: Fantasy no full wigs otherwise completely unrestrained freedom to create with any hair lengths. Editorial some extensions maybe used not
to cover more than 25% of natural head form, models own hair is to be easily recognized.
3. HAIR ADDITIONS: Extensions, wefts, anything made from hair to look like hair is allowed for editorial design but may not cover more than 25% off the
natural head form and natural hair must be visible.
4. COLOUR: Complete freedom to go wild and create a complete collection showcasing a Collection themed Fantasy vs Reality.
5. ATTIRE AND MAKEUP: Complete freedom to create a total co-ordination of their look.
6. MUSIC: this theatrical presentation should be enhanced by a 1 min sound track for the cat walk and reinforce their theme of the total Collection. Teams
that do not present music to the sound man must accept the sound man’s random selection.
7. Sages will observe the models prior to and during the competition to assure the rules are followed.
Demerits will result in the following areas:
-5 Hair Additions covering more than 25 % of natural head form | -5 For Trend or Street Wear designs | -5 Full wigs | -5 Indecent Attire and Nudity
