are obvious draws for individuals and
families, but these industries go far
beyond the parks.
We celebrate our state’s thriving
hospitality industry in this, our annual

When Paul Petzoldt started the
National Outdoor Leadership School
50 years ago, he couldn’t have picked a
better place to headquarter a program
that featured courses in climbing.
Lander is still the headquarters for
the school that expanded worldwide
and is home to the Rocky Mountain
Branch where courses leave right out
the door and onto the nearby faces in
Sinks Canyon or launch expeditions
into the Cirque of the Towers in the
Wyoming Range.

room for climbing, said Andy Blair,
course instructor and assistant director of NOLS Rocky Mountain. There
is every type of climbing in the state,
sandstone, dolomite and granite- and
that’s just in Sinks Canyon, he said.
There is climbing across Wyoming from Vedauwoo near Laramie
in Southern Wyoming up to Devil’s
Tower in Eastern Wyoming to Ten
Sleep in Northern Wyoming, in Sinks
Canyon and Wild Iris near Lander
in the center of the state and in the
Tetons on the Western border of
Wyoming.
That passion is shared by many
climbers who visit Wyoming for the
rocks. Wyoming is home to the International Climber’s Festival, the longest
running climbing festival in the world,
held for more than 20 years in Lander.

MARK WILCOX / WYOMING BUSINESS REPORT
DASH CAM - The views behind the handlebars at Grand Targhee are nothing short of spectacular, and the trail system keeps growing.
Fresh single-track havens opening up
Berms, rollers and wall
rides popping up all
over the state
BY MARK WILCOX
[email protected]
A perfect mountain biking run
provides adrenaline boosts for many
a Wyomingite as they tear around
corners, catch air or ride the lip of a
deep berm. Maybe that’s the reason
new trails are cropping up all over
the state, pushing both in-state road
trips for those looking for a weekend
getaway or even drawing people from
other states and countries.
Targhee trumps the pump
The Wydaho Rendezvous Teton
Mountain Bike Festival, for instance,
may be one of the biggest draws for
mountain bikers to the state and within it. Wydaho is a combination of state
names – Wyoming and Idaho – and it
perfectly describes the small pocket
of Wyoming surrounded by Tetons on
one side and Idaho farmland on the
other. The rendezvous takes place at
Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, Wyoming, and draws in enthusiasts from
all over.
“We are expecting 500 to 600
people,” said Ken Rider, marketing
director for Targhee in an email to the
Business Report shortly before this
year’s event over Labor Day weekend.
“Last year we had 450, with riders
from 23 states and Canada. The preregistration is up over last year so it is
looking great.”
The event acts as a fundraiser to
expand and improve trails and pathways in the area. Targhee itself has put
in a notable investment in trails. In the
past year, the resort has added at least
two cross-country trails and continues
to refine its lift-accessed downhill
offerings as well. In fact, the resort in
July added a new black-diamond trail
snaking off the opposite direction
from most of its other options this
season. Called Rock Garden, the resort
bills it as one of the steepest and most
advanced trails on the mountain with
an 1,809-foot descent right from the
top of Fred’s Mountain.
“There is not a lot of riding in the
area that demands a full-on downhill
bike, but this trail does,” said Harlan Hottenstein, lead trail builder at
Grand Targhee Resort. “An added
bonus is that a lot of the trail can be
seen from the chairlift, so it will be
good entertainment for the scenic
tourists as well.”
The trail earns its name and rating,
passing over exposed rock shelves and
down steep, technical segments that
many will think twice before riding.
The company also opened a new
cross-country trail called Action Jackson at around the same time as the
lift-accessed Rock Garden. The trail
charts a meandering course through
the beautiful forest to the south of
Targhee and onto a mountain meadow
plateau with expansive Teton views.

BIKING
Wyoming Business Report | www.wyomingbusinessreport.com
from 5B
The carefully planned trail makes for
a never-too-steep ascent, but the top
portion especially on the way down
offers a fun, fast ride. Oddly, the uphill
on the whole almost seems to go as
fast as the downhill, with frequent
switches between rise and run in both
directions as the trail makes use of the
space nature gave it.
Targhee also plans to continue its
four-year trail expansion efforts next
season, and simply states that “other
top-to-bottom downhill trails and
additional cross-country trails are
being planned for 2016.”
Even without next year’s additions,
the resort boasts one of the most serious mountain-bike trail networks in
the U.S. Mtbparks.com even named it
the No. 1 bike park in the Northwest
for 2013. All told, the trail network
is nearing 50 miles, and the focus on
them is drawing attention.
Cody calves new trails
Not so long ago, riders had to sneak
their single-track action in Cody on cattle trails, but in recent years volunteers
have helped calve – and carve – new
bike-specific routes.
Right next to the mountains of
ellowstone, Cody has no shortage of
mountain bike trails, but locals have
often complained about a lack of accessible trails close to town. According to
Wyofile, the area has eight new miles
of trails to the area this summer. The
changes are thanks to Park County
Pedalers, an organization designed to
increase visibility and accessibility of
biking in the area.
Brian Ohlen is a mechanic at Absaroka Bicycles in Cody. He said this summer’s offerings have cropped up in the
Beck Lake Area, which is right in town
and is already frequented by people riding their bikes and walking their dogs.
“They’re just expanding some of the
trails that are out there,” Ohlen said.
The area is relatively flat compared to
Teton riding; one trail only has 50 feet
of descent on a maximum grade of 4
percent, but the accessibility is key.
Ohlen said the Pedalers aren’t through
yet, either. The group has a contract to
build “a bunch more” trails sometime
soon, making a stronger case for Cody
as a mountain-biking destination.
So far, the new trails aren’t doing
much for business at Absaroka, though
Ohlen said the area is seeing a small
influx of spring bikers from places like
Bozeman, Montana that take longer to
thaw out than Cody.
Dubois digs downhill
Descending from the scenic stonewalls and lush forests of Togwotee, the
land soon yields to a desert landscape of
red rock and aged dirt. The change is
drastic in a few short miles, and Dubois
is more reminiscent of a small town in
the red rock meccas of southern Utah
than what most people would expect in
Wyoming. Red rock, as it happens, is a
prized destination for mountain bikers.
The Dubois Association for Recreation and Trails, or DART, took advantage of that thought along with the
rolling red hills of Dubois to make a
purpose-built mountain bike trail from
the town’s overlook right near downtown. DART debuted its first trail in
May – the Dubois Overlook Trail. The
trail starts from the summit and wends
down across a cactus- and sagebrushinfested slope before climbing back up
for another run.
After the first climb, it shoots back
down through a series of jumps that
offer feel-good speed and shallow air
to intermediate mountain bikers. After
that, a second climb sections off another
unused space on the hill to descend
through a gully that offers some welldone wall rides before spitting bikers out
on the road where they can pedal back to
the top or place a shuttle car.
On McKinley Drive just outside
Dubois’ downtown, bikers get an exhilarating 639 vertical feet of downhill and
315 feet of climbing on the 3.2-mile trail.
The trail is a first for DART, but not
the last. Future projects include nonmotorized trails on Togwotee Pass and
a multi-use trail network on BLM land
near Dubois.
Lander loves single-track
Lander is another mountain town
adding to its mountain biking rep. At
the foot of the Wind River Range, the
city has traditionally been a climbing
mecca as far as outdoor pursuits go.
However, options are opening up for
those who prefer pedal power.
Johnny Behind the Rocks has been
a local favorite since it opened. The
trail system has been expanding in the
past 15 years, and now hosts the crosscountry race the Jurassic Classic in the
fall. For 2015, the event is coming up
soon on Sept. 12. The area got a new
connector trail this summer, but the
trail system is now getting a run for
its money as new trails wedge into the
area.
The Cycling Club finished out Brewer’s Trail in Sinks Canyon this summer.
Also known as “Chain Reaction,” the
two-mile trail offers more than 600
vertical feet that people seem to enjoy.
“A lot of people are stoked about
it; it’s a pretty sweet trail,” said an
employee of the Bike Mill in Lander.
The man described the trail as an
“enduro trail” with both downhill
and uphill that is steep compared to
Johnny Behind the Rocks. The trail
climbs past wildflowers at certain
times of year into pine forests and then
onto sweeping vistas of Sinks Canyon
and the Pop Agie River.
Just the new stuff
These trails only begin to describe
all the options available to mountain
bikers in Wyoming, so ditch the four
wheels for two and hit a trail. Chances
are few will be disappointed in the
bucking trails the Cowboy State has
to offer.

Wyo. art scene evolves into long art walk
Arts opportunities
cropping up all over
Cowboy State
MARK WILCOX

People often associate Wyoming
with natural beauty: Yellowstone,
Grand Teton National Park and
Devils Tower are what people think
about when they have Wyoming on
the brain. Beyond that, Wyoming is
perhaps the center of what people
consider the Old West, further evoking romanticized images of cowboys
and Indians and abundant wildlife to
people worldwide.
Artists often play on the emotions these things evoke, so it may be
unsurprising that Wyoming is becoming a more visible nexus of the visual
arts. While much of the art has traditionally emerged from the northwest
region of the state where the national
parks draw most attention, the arts
community is actively reaching into
many communities across the state,
said Michael Shay, spokesman for the
Wyoming Arts Council.
The resultant “lively” arts communities springing up are refreshing
many towns around the state, even
as arts mainstays stay mainstream. In
COURTESY BRINTON MUSEUM
BIG VIEWS - The Brinton Museum’s new building boasts expansive views of the
Bighorn range.
2011, the most recent data the Arts
Council had on hand, independent
artists contributed $85.5 million to
the Wyoming economy. Art dealers
contributed another $17.6 million.
On a creative index put together
by a regional arts supporting organization, Wyoming scored higher than
most regional states as well. Western
Wyoming, bolstered by Jackson, Pinedale, Cody and other artsy towns, in
fact scored higher than all other state
averages in the region. The rest of the
state scored high enough to only be
outpaced by Colorado while Montana, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico and
Arizona all had less “creative vitality.”
Following are some of the arts meccas
and up-and-comers in the state with
some reasons you should care enough
to check them out.
Jackson Hole
The biggest art market in the state
is hard to ignore.
“I will say that Jackson Hole as an
arts destination is one of the biggest in
the Rocky Mountain Region, so that
says a lot,” Shay said.
And one of the largest draws to
Jackson Hole has become the Fall
Arts Festival. Jackson Hole Chamber
of Commerce President Jeff Golightly
said the event is one of the drivers of
the arts community in Jackson. The

festival has grown over the last 31
years to its highest volume in 2014,
and Golightly said he has no reason
to believe it will get any smaller this
year.
The event has reshaped the contours of Jackson’s tourism economy,
which once tapered off quickly after
Labor Day. Now, though, September
is on par with June for tourism in
Jackson and is only eclipsed by July
and August. While he said that the
festival isn’t the only thing that has
made the month viable, it has certainly aided it.
“More galleries, more people connected to the arts are continually
trying to figure out how they can be
part of the festival, which continues to spur new and creative ideas,”
Golightly said.
The Fall Arts Festival includes a
quick draw and auction the Chamber
puts on; a show that puts small works
from well-respected artists on sale
in the National Museum of Wildlife
Art; the Jackson Hole Art Auction
which sells through millions of dollars’ worth of art, often from famous
deceased artists.
“That art auction – I’ve seen the
catalog for the thing, and it’s kind of
humbling,” Shay of the Arts Council
said.
Beyond that, many of the 30 or
so galleries in Jackson organize their
own shows and events in coordination
with the festival that is already drawing in buyers, creating a synergistic
draw that has drawn arts renown to
the small town.
Cody to Powell
Flanking Yellowstone’s eastern
edge, Cody is another natural arts
community. Adding to the feel are
several well-respected galleries and
of course “the biggie,” as Shay puts it:
the Buffalo Bill Center for the West,
which since its name change in 2013
can be shortened to the appropriately
Western acronym of BBCOW.
“I don’t think they like that acronym,” Shay said, using it anyway.
The museum in an affiliate of the
Smithsonian Institution, and was
recently named the Top Western
Museum by True West Magazine,
among other honors. The museum is
a collection of five museums arranged
like a wagon wheel, with each wing
dedicated to a certain facet of Western history: natural history, Western art, firearms, Plains Indians and
namesake Buffalo Bill.
The museum draws about 200,000
visitors annually, according to the
New York Times. Its annual art show
and sale of contemporary Western,
wildlife, landscape artists has been
generating more than $1 million in
sales each year, drawing in some big
names in Western art as well as those
that collect it.
Shay tagged the Simpson-Gallagher Gallery as worth visiting in Cody
as well.
Up the road in Powell, he said
the presence of Northwest College
helps the arts scene. The Plaza Diane
Community Center for the Arts has
sprung up with a rotating art exhibit
and an arts festival of its own.
Sheridan area
Sheridan is also aided by a collegetown feel. The Sheridan College has
been investing in public art in its
new buildings, several galleries have
cropped up around town and the
Sagebrush Community Art Center
seeks to buoy the arts community in
the area generally.
“Comparing [Sheridan] to Jackson
is kind of tough, but it’s lively,” Shay
said.
Perhaps most important, though,
the Brinton Museum in June put the
finishing touches on a 23,000-squarefoot expansion that rang up at $15.4
million. That has helped the museum
draw in its own fairly prominent art
show as it partners with the Western
Rendezvous of Art in 2016, which
used to be in Montana.
The museum staged its expansion
through a $21 million fundraising
campaign that will help set it up on an
endowment to fund its future.
“That new building is amazing,”
Shay said.
Casper
The Casper College, Casper Artists’ Guild and of course the Nicolaysen Art Museum anchor the Casper
visual arts community. The guild set
up art walks on the first Thursday
of every month starting in June this
year.
The Nicolaysen just completed a
nearly $100,000 renovation on Sept.
8, and Shay bills it as “a great place.”
The museum tends to feature contemporary Wyoming artists, with a
current exhibit of deceased Jackson
landscape artist Conrad Schwiering
indicative of what the museum does.
T he museu m occupies a
25,000-square-foot building built in
1924 by the Mountain States Power
Co. It was the sixth museum accredited by the American Association of
Museums in 2009.
“It’s a real professional art museum,” Shay said. “It’s really well done. I
guess it’s kind of an anchor to the arts
in downtown Casper.”
Elsewhere
The arts community is growing
in Wyoming, so this is necessarily far
from exhaustive on what’s out there.
Shay said Pinedale, Dubois, Laramie,
Cheyenne and even Rock Springs all
have their own offerings as well.
In other words, the key to finding
the best art anywhere in the state is
simply to look for it.

CLIMBING
Wyoming Business Report | www.wyomingbusinessreport.com
from 3B

COURTESY DAVID ANDERSON/NOLS
A student on a mock lead - which
allows for a student to practice placing
gear while using a top rope for safety.
NOLS students discuss the finer points of bouldering before putting their skills into
practice.
Climbers come from around the
world each summer, drawn to the clinics, but also the famous rock in Wild Iris
and Sinks Canyon.
It’s not just for seasoned veterans.
Each year the festival offers clinics for
beginners which fill fast.
While the festival is the biggest
and best known in Wyoming, there is
another festival held in Ten Sleep. The
Ten Sleep Climbing Festival, organized
by the Bighorn Climbers’ Coalition, is
free and runs for one evening.
Those loving to climb in the winter,
can head to the Cody Ice Climbing Fes-
tival. The Southfork of the Shoshone
National forest near Cody is famous for
its frozen waterfalls.
“Ice climbing on the Southfork out
of Cody is particularly cleansing in that
it demands that you show up physically, mentally and emotionally in this
beautiful part of the planet that just
kinds of puts thins all in perspective,”
said Cody climber Kenny Gasch, who
also guides with Jackson Hole Mountain Guides.
Cody is like many Wyoming communities with quality and diverse
climbs easily accessible from town. And
Time to crown a
new Poker Champ!
For more information about poker please visit windriverhotelcasino.com
one of the best part is the setting, Gasch
said. The scenery is stunning and there
are usually few crowds. You don’t have
to wait long to get on a route in most of
Wyoming, he said.
“Climbing to me is somewhat of an
escape from the everyday humdrum of
life,” he said. “Once on the rock or ice,
your mind focuses on the task at hand
and all else is forgotten. It’s a mental
cleansing if you would.”
The guide service offers ice climbing
trips and clinics for the most skilled as well
as novices. They also offer climbing lessons
and guided trips in Jackson, the Wind
River Mountains and in the Lander-area.
For people not quite ready to climb a
frozen waterfall, or for those interested
in training and honing their ice climbing skills, there is an ice climbing wall in
Jackson at Snow King Mountain.
There’s also an outdoor bouldering
park at the foot of Snow King where in
the summer people can work on their
skills for free.
For those wanting more instruction,
Exum Mountain Guides in Jackson also
offer climbing classes and guided trips.
Most of the trips leave from the guide
service’s office in Grand Teton National
Park, said Exum’s Jennie Graz.
“The Tetons kind of sell themselves
with the beauty and the views,” she said.
The most popular is of course the
Grand Teton, the highest peak in the
park.
“It’s a gorgeous hike followed by
a very attainable multi-pitch climb,”
Graz said.
Other trips include climbing in
nearby Teton Village as well as the
Wind River Mountains and Devils
Tower. There is climbing on every type
of rock and for every level.
“Within a very small area you can
have something for everyone’s ability
and age,” Graz said.
The company’s guided young kids
as well as people into their 70s up the
Grand, or just spent a day teaching
them to climb.
“It’s enough to just get out and get a
taste of rock climbing,” she said.
The Wind River Hotel and Casino will host one
of the region’s largest poker tournaments this
November. Survive all rounds of the Wyoming
State Poker Championship and you could be the
winner of over $10,000. Sign up starts November
21 at 10 a.m. in the Spring Mountain Room with
playtime starting at 4 p.m. Entry fee is $300.
Space is limited so only 260 players will be allowed
to register. Do well and a piece of the estimated
$60,000 pool prize will be yours.
The winner will also win a premium silver
championship bracelet and the bragging rights for
the year. So step in the ring and let’s see who will
be the Wyoming Poker Champion!

Wyoming still reels in fly fishermen
Late summer, early fall
ideal time to wet a line
BY PATRICK WOLFINBARGER
[email protected]
Fly fishing in Wyoming offers the
opportunity to enjoy the outdoors,
fresh air and the isolation from cell
phone calls.
Just don’t attempt to get a fly fisherman to reveal a favorite fishing
locale. That’s tougher than Goldfinger
trying to get James Bond to talk.
Chad Baldwin of Laramie is a lifelong Wyoming fly fisherman. He has
traveled the state and fished many a
river, stream, reservoir and lake.
“Wyoming has a log of great places
to fish,” said Baldwin, University of
Wyoming associate vice president for
communications and marketing. He
listed areas such as the Laramie and
Little Laramie rivers, the North Platte
River and world-renown stretches
such as Miracle Mile and Grey Reef,
the Green River, Yellowstone Lake,
and Flaming Gorge and Pathfinder
Reservoirs. There are so many places
to fly fish, Baldwin said he isn’t close
to visiting them all.
“But I’m not going to tell you my
favorite place,” Baldwin added.
Wyoming boasts 4,200 crystalline

lakes and 27,000 miles of blue-ribbon,
fishable streams. If local anglers won’t
provide precise locations for catching
the big one, or one of the handy phone
apps can’t quite provide a specific latitude or longitude for casting, there are
dozens of fly stores, guides and outfitters who are happy to talk and point
the way.
Among the reasons Wyoming is a
fly fishing destination, especially in the
northwestern part of the state, is availability of native cutthroat trout, said
Scott Sanchez, fly shop manager for JD
High Country Outfitters in Jackson.
“There are very few places where
the native trout are left,” Sanchez said.
“July, August and September are a
great time of the year for fishing for
cutthroats.”
Trout favor cold water and the cooler
temperatures, coupled with Wyoming’s
elevation, make late summer and early
fall an ideal time to fly fish, he said.
“The fish are eating dry flies and
dry flies are easy for beginners to fish,”
COURTESY STEVEN MCBRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY, INC
Fly fishing lessons are offered by the Snake River Sporting Club south of Jackson,
through the Orvis Fly Fishing School.
Sanchez said.
Whether it’s visiting a fly store or
hiring a guide, beginners have many
resources throughout the state to learn
how to fly fish, he said.
“Fly fishing can be as simple or complicated as anything else,” Sanchez said.
“The nice thing about starting out in
Wyoming, like on the Platte, is that you
don’t need a hundred different flies.”
Wyoming offers a variety of waters
to find the right challenge for either a
beginner or expert fly fisherman, he
added.
For those seeking a more thorough
introduction to fly fishing, the Snake
River Sporting Club is partnering
with Orvis and Jackson Hole Fly Fishing School to host the newly launched
Orvis Fly Fishing School – Jackson
Hole. The series of intensive two-day
classes is the first Wyoming school
offered by the outfitter. The school
combines classroom programming
and “on-stream” instruction led by
Orvis Fly Fishing Instructor Spencer
Morton, and is attracting fly fishing
enthusiasts from around the globe.
School participants receive in-depth
exploration of fly fishing fundamentals
and techniques, including tying essen➤ See Fishing, 12B

tial knots, choosing gear and tackle,
proper fly selection, reading water
and currents and general entomology.
The school takes advantage of the
Snake River Sporting Club’s premier
and private access to six miles of BlueRibbon fishing on the Snake River,
and each student receives an exclusive
hands-on lesson with personalized
attention from an expert instructor,
for both beginner and expert levels.
While anglers are enjoying Wyoming’s array of trout like the native
cutthroat or non-native rainbow,
brook and brown, there is also an
increased interest in fly fishing for
carp. One lifelong fly fisherman who’s
taken up the “challenge” of catching
carp is Jeff McDonald, marketing
director for Trihydro Corp., McDonald, a member of Trout Unlimited,
has written about fly fishing and is out
on a lake shore or on a stream bank
whenever he can be.
“Though carp have the stigma of
trash fish among many anglers, they
are actually a very difficult fish to
catch with a fly rod.” McDonald said.
“They are incredibly sensitive to disturbances in their surroundings, so
approaching these fish is extremely
difficult. Also, the angler must make
an incredibly accurate cast to land the
fly right in front of a feeding carp.”
McDonald said he’s fished for carp
the past few years in Pathfinder Reservoir with expert flycaster Mark
Boname, owner of North Platte River
COURTESY ORVIS
Kim Vletas and a furry friend walk along the banks of the Snake River, looking for a likely spot.
Fly Shop in Casper.
“He guides clients on Pathfinder
in a salt water flats boat, essentially
unheard of in land-locked Wyoming,”
McDonald said. “I have fly fished in
the salt waters of Belize, Mexico,
Texas and Florida, and fly fishing for
carp with Mark is a very similar experience. And when a 15 to 20 pound
carp takes your fly and screams line
off of your reel, there is really no other
experience like that available on a fly
rod in Wyoming.”
While McDonald said fly fishing
for carp is a relatively new frontier, he
thinks “it is something every serious
fly angler must experience for themselves to truly appreciate it.”
“And once you catch one, you see
the beauty in them, rather than the
stigma,” McDonald said.
