INTERNATIONAL STARDOM DOES NOT
STOP KIND GESTURES, WELCOME
HOME TOMMY MEMPHIS
Tommy Memphis has spent the
past 6 months entertaining the
Spanish, and all those tourists, on
the famous party island of Ibiza.
His family have been enjoying a
different way of life while he did
what he does best; make everyone
who is fortunate enough to enjoy
his talents feel good.
Tommy flies into Australia on
Tuesday 29 October and his first
show will be at Twin Towns on
Wednesday 30 October. His show
time in Breezes Live 4pm to 7pm
Qld will be as popular as ever and
we suggest you come early to
secure your seat, and spot on the
dance floor. Tommy may well have
a new move to teach us after his
time in Espanole!
In addition to his talents as a
rock and roll performer, Tommy
is always keen to give back to the
community. He is doing this in a
big way by donating his time on
Sunday 3 November to support our
annual Special Children’s Day.
Let us provide some background –
Every
year
Twin
Towns
Community Foundation hosts
a family fun day for all those
children who have special needs
- all the local support groups are
invited to attend this function
in the Showroom. What makes
it unique is that it is the one
opportunity when the families and
the children are able to relax and
let their inner self run rampant in
a controlled environment. There
is something for everyone - fun
food, balloonery, face painting
and
tailored
entertainment.
Tommy is a keen supporter of the
family environment and will be
entertaining the children, parents
and grandparents with a lot of fun
singing, dancing and interaction.
Welcome Tommy back to Twin
Towns and thank him for his
ongoing support of our community.
There is no greater example of a
person who lets his inner self run
rampant every time he appears
simply to make everybody feel
special, every day. Champion.
TWO GREAT TRIBUTES STAYING
ALIVE AT TWIN TOWNS
It’s time to lace up your platform
shoes, don those wide lapels and
get your harmonies in tune, as we
are reliving the memories of the Bee
Gees on Saturday 5 October.
The very best of the Bee Gees
show is a complete discography of
all their finest songs, presented in
a historical journey from 1967 to
1999. This fabulous production, will
take you from the beginning with
songs such as “New York Mining
Disaster” and “Massachusetts”, right
through the disco period of “Staying
Alive” and “Saturday Night Fever”,
culminating with their current hit
“Alone”.
This month also features the
Killer Queen show on Friday 11
October. Imagine a performance
that features the musical legacy,
energy and iconic performances
of the English super group Queen.
Johnny Blunt bears an uncanny
resemblance to Freddie Mercury,
and the moment he sets foot on
stage, Freddie’s very essence is alive
again.
The Killer Queen show has been
nominated for the Best Tribute
Show in the South East Queensland
Entertainment Awards, appeared
on Channel 9 and recently on
Australia’s Got Talent. This show is
the closest you will ever get to see
the super group Queen. Come and
hear all the greatest hits including
‘Crazy Little Thing Called love’,
‘We Will Rock You’, We Are The
Champions’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’,
plus a whole lot more!
Tickets $25. For all bookings

BoardChairman’sReport
assist Twin Towns Board members
reduce numbers to a maximum of
nine Directors by July 1st 2016 in
accordance with recent amendments
to the Registered Clubs Act and thus
easing the burden for reduction on
his fellow Directors.
RON LEWIS’S RETIREMENT LEAVES
A MEMORABLE LEGACY
Mr. R. W. (Ron) Lewis tendered
his resignation to the Board of
Management at the August Board
meeting which was accepted with
much regret by fellow Directors.
On behalf of the Board of
Management of Twin Towns Clubs
and Resort, our management team
and staff, I wish Ron and his wife
Joan a healthy life and a wonderful
retirement. Both Ron and Joan have
certainly earned a relaxing future
together.
AN ABBOTT COALITION
GREAT FOR CLUBS
Ron joined Twin Towns Services
Club in May 1985, was elected to
the Board of Management in March
1994 where his dedication and
service for members, Twin Towns
and especially Club Banora and the
community continued uninterrupted
until August 2013. Ron served on a
myriad of committees with extremely
high principles and passion for each
portfolio setting the bar especially
high with a challenge for others who
follow to emulate. Ron was granted
Life Membership by members in
2012 for his amazing commitment
and work ethic for members and
community.
Without a Labor/Greens minority
Government
encompassing
Independents dictating terms the
Coalition win in Federal politics is a
breath of fresh air for the not for profit
community club industry. The final
Senate make up may be a distraction
of sorts however the policy taken
to the electorate by the coalition
basically dismantling the “National
Gaming Reform Bill’ and handing
responsibility in the most part back to
the states where it belongs will allow
confidence back in the club and hotel
sector guaranteeing employment
and growth in a myriad of associated
areas.
Ron’s work for the community made
a profound difference to the lives
of many Tweed Heads residents and
he was instrumental in establishing
the Twin Towns Services Community
Foundation responsible for donating
much needed funding for many
a charity. Ron of course took his
responsibility much further than
expected and his service above self
and passionate belief in serving
others was way above the standard
call of duty with his representation
on behalf of Twin Towns on the
Community Development Support
Expenditure Scheme immeasurable.
Labor granted Club Gaming licences
sixty years ago only to allow clubs
to be the sacrificial lambs to win
Independent and Green’s support for
six years of disastrously expensive
policy making.
Recently Ron was awarded a very
unique citation from ClubsNSW as
a “Heart of the Community 2013
Ambassador” for his Clubs and
Community work.
During his early years at the Club Ron
worked tirelessly to ensure the success
of the Club Banora Golf Course and
unselfishly put aside many hours to
establish the management framework
for this very successful Banora Golf
Club.
Ron of course understood his
corporate governance responsibilities
more than most and, as a man of
principle, chose to stand down to
2
“Leave our clubs alone” for the
massive contribution they make to
regional and metropolitan areas of
NSW is certainly appreciated by the
Abbott led coalition government as it
is for our members.
THE HIDDEN COST
OF DOING BUSINESS
The Board of Management of Twin
Towns Clubs and Resort have always
acknowledged their responsibility in
acting as caretakers for all members’
assets including, best practice as
a not for profit community club,
of supporting local community
charitable organisations especially
Junior Sport as our charter requires.
One of the most important strategic
principals is for Directors to maintain
all members’ facilities and to reinvent
and reinvest in the business model for
the long term viability of this great
Club.
Over the years there have been many
letters and many comments made to
Club News, October 2013 Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts
Board members about catering cost
increases, beverage cost increases
and removal of some long standing
member bonus benefits which are
due to more regulation, basic cost
increases, repairs and maintenance
etc. However after much deliberation
at Board level decisions are never
made lightly and always with the best
interests of the Club and members a
priority.
MEMBERS BUS SERVICE
Surfside Bus Service fee increase
= 10%
(The Board are currently questioning
the viability and alternatives
of this little used service).
Extrapolate use per head Vs total cost
remembering membership is 42,000
$600,000 annually.
At our Strategic Planning weekend
recently a graphic picture was
provided to the Board of Management
of the extreme cost of repairs and
maintenance to all three clubs and
Resort Hotel and how profoundly
important it is to maintain profit
margins to be in a financial position
to repair, maintain and replace aging
facilities as and when required to
keep up the quality product members
expect.
You will note there is no funding
provision for continued renovations
to the Club Banora Golf Course other
than those renovations planned nor
to the Bowls Greens at this time due
to a plethora of issues none the least
of which is the current development
application
before
the
Local
Government Authority for the totally
revitalised new club “footprint”
involving the Banora site.
I considered it appropriate to show
members the somewhat hidden costs
of running Twin Towns Clubs and
Resort providing a list of expenditure
required to maintain numerous
facilities at this time. I point out that
these costs prescribed are consultant
recommendations with some still to
be finetuned, while others that are
not urgent may be deferred to a later
date subject to Board scrutiny and
acceptance.
The following list shows the estimated
costs involved for the preservation of
member’s facilities:
TWIN TOWNS
Air conditioning, heating,
mechanical repairs and replacement $290,000
TWIN TOWNS OUTRIGGER
RESORT HOTEL.
Balcony repairs, water proofing,
tiling repair, painting (10 yr warranty)
$855,400
BANORA
Air conditioning, heating, mechanical
$904,000
CB proportion of Tri Generation
System (balance Govt Grant) $580,000
Total $5,222,400
I hope members appreciate the
“hidden costs” of doing business and
the profound necessity to maintain
profit margins to provide the ultimate
members facilities in a Club you can
be especially proud of.
FOOTPRINT MARKET RESEARCH
FOR CLUB BANORA.
Following the KPMG modelling
carried out and provided to members
some eight years ago with the aid of
statistics realised from a member only
survey by Footprint Market Research
the Board have chosen to engage their
company services once more to better
understand the broader community
demographic and associated club
requirement to provide an overview
to allow the board to put together a
future strategic direction that better
fits the wider community for a “New
Club Banora”.
This new research will be much
broader than previous studies
covering a greater regional area,
encompassing members as well as
non members, looking into the future
long term sporting facility viability
as well as taking into account the
community club responsibility aspect
of Twin Towns Clubs and Resort.
OASIS POOLS
Wading Pool repairs and maintenance,
expansion joint seals,
pipe-work replacement, concourse
re-build, plant and equipment
$1,838,000
The success of Twin Towns over the
last 56 years has been achieved from
the careful long term planning and
economic management derived from
research such as this to set a future
viable strategy in the best interests of
members and our community.
TENNIS
Tennis Court replacement programme
$40,000
We certainly look forward to research
outcomes early in the new year.
JUNIORS
Air-conditioning $35,000
Lifts $80,000
Good health and I look forward to
catching up around our clubs.

A SMOOTH ROCK, SOUL & MOTOWN KIND OF WEEKEND!
We first showcased the amazing
talents of Lisa Hunt and her band at
Club Banora on Friday 2 November
2012. The venue was filled with
an enthusiastic audience who
enjoyed Lisa’s uplifting music and
entertainment style.
If you are able to come along
to Twin Towns during the end of
October to see Lisa Hunt and her
band Forever Soul, you won’t be able
to keep yourself off the dance floor.
And try to stop yourself singing
every song at the top of your voice!
Lisa Hunt can best be described as
a ‘feel good’ entertainer who will
put a smile on your face which you
won’t be able to erase for a very
long time.
Lisa has had songs on numerous
compilations around the globe,
both as singer and songwriter
and has sold more than a million
records. She began singing in that
great African American tradition,
the gospel church, which laid the
foundation of her soulful singing
style.
She has shared the stage with
musical greats such as Eric Clapton,
James Brown, Dionne Warwick,
Brian May, Randy Crawford, Joe
Cocker, Miles Davis, Andrea Bocelli.
In Australia Lisa has toured and
recorded with Jimmy Barnes,
Diesel, Radio Dreedom, and Johnny
(b.good) Johnson.
With such an enjoyable
entertainment style who appeals
to almost everybody you won’t
be disappointed with a Lisa Hunt
performance. And if you can’t make
it this October don’t worry we are
bringing her back for a free live
performance this New Years Eve
in the showroom, it’s going to be
huge.
See you on the dance floor real
soon.

Our bi-monthly meetings at Club
Banora have been well-attended, and
we have voted for a club weekend
at Iluka, taking two boats to fish the
Clarence. This is proposed for the next
Comp/ BBQ weekend 18-20 October.
Please confirm ASAP that you will join
us, as there are catering and booking
arrangements. It’ll be a great weekend
on the mighty Clarence that you won’t
want to miss!
The new boat access is functioning
well with members able to return
them after use, but please notify me
as soon as the boat is home and the
motor flushed.

GARDEN CLUB
The Champion Exhibit in Benching for
September was a Dendrobium orchid
exhibited by Gwen Brown. This orchid
will grow epiphytically on rocks and
even in swampy ground so it is difficult
to generalise about cultivation.
Generally they are divided into warm,
intermediate, and cool growing. We
would need ‘intermediate’ for our
local area.
The guest speaker was Peter Flanagan
from Earth & Colour Nursery and he
brought a number of lovely flowering
plants to talk about and sell at a
discount to members.
September 9th the garden competition
judging day with some immaculate
gardens being presented. A DVD will
be available.
Next meeting Tuesday 1st October;
November meeting changed to
Monday November 11th. Time 9.45am
in the Tuscany Room. Enq. 5524 5743.
GOLF
The
scheduled
Golf
Course
maintenance is tracking as planned
and the Course will be closed from
21 to 24 October. When reopened
temporary greens will be in play short
time along with a modified course
layout as fairways 6 and 14 will be
out of play for a further three weeks,
approximately.
Congratulation to our Ladies Pennant
Team who finished third in the Gold
Coast competition achieving the
Club’s best pennant result for many
years. The Team of Peggy Williams,
Cherie Doyle, Denise Culpitt, Myra
Biggar (Captain) and Coral Asher are
pictured in order. Rhoda Way was
also a core team member and Kerrie
Campbell played in one of the Pennant
rounds. Great job girls!

Fullerton in a very tight tactical
battle from two experienced players.
Brian Exley defeated Tom Finn in the
C Grade Championship earlier, Brian
winning on the black ball in the final
frame. Congratulations to all those
players involved.
Twin Towns were successful in the
FNCSA Teams Championships on
25th August. The Club also had a
resounding win against Sherwood RSL
on 11th August.
The Club will also be visiting Lismore
Workers on Sunday 15th September.
The Club has three new qualified
referees in Paul Chappell, Ryan Cretan
and Brian Roebeck who were granted
their badges following assessment last
month. Well done fellows.

tournaments for the rest of the year

DIGGERS SWIMMING
A warm welcome to new member Kim,
daughter of Guy Hawthorne. A good
swimmer, she’s going to give her old
dad a run for his money when it comes
to winning points.
Members to Perth for the Winter
Swimming Titles were: Rob Green,
Jack Chapman, Warren & Debbie
Scotman, Jim Newton, Toni Cameron
& Brian Deane.
October sees us back into our
summer swimming season. We’d
like to have a return of members to
the pool in readiness for the FNC
zone championships. It is our turn to
host this meet which will be held on
November 30th at the Oasis pools.
We are keen to produce a good event,
so would like to see a good turnout of
members, either swimming or helping
out in some capacity (or both).
Daylight Saving is with us again, so
those of you on Queensland time will
have to set out earlier in order to race
at 8.30 DST.

MASTERS SWIMMING
With the weather improving several of
us are getting back to their training
programs. It certainly was enjoyable
weather for the first Barrier Reef
Games held in Cairns last month. All
sports were represented and six of us
took part in the swimming.
Our 90 year old – Alison Worrall –
made a great effort to win 6 gold in
her six races. Val smith did a great job
in the 85 year old age group gaining
2 gold and 3 silver in her 5 races. Del
Margetts swam 9 races and won 5 gold
and 4 silver in the 80-84 age group.
Dihana Poulsen in her 75-79 age
group won 2 gold, 3 sliver and 1
bronze. Wendy Corbett was thrilled to
win her first ever gold medal as well as
1 silver and 3 bronze in her 5 races in
the 60-64 age group.
Georgina Smith in her 55-59 age
group won 6 gold in her six races.
What a great time was had by all
and many more are saying they will
compete in 2015.
The Southside Carnival was held at
Chandler as soon as we got back and
our “George” at 95 broke another
“national” record and gained 5 first
places. Barbara was successful with
1 first, 2 seconds and 2 thirds in the
75-79 age group. Robyn in the 70-
74 age group gained 2 first , 1 second
and 2 thirds. Congratulations to all
swimmers in both carnivals. Masters
Swimming is all about fun, friendship
and fitness – we all have a great time
and “medals” are just a “bonus”.
Condolences to Christine Dennis
on the loss of her only child Gerry.
Christine was a member of our Club
for several years so we all feel her loss
remembering Gerry as swimming with
us on special occasions as a young lad.
