We also want to give a special thank you to Subway on Eola Road for providing the student helpers and judges with discounted sandwiches. Bednarcik Spelling Bee: o Congratulations to all of the participants in our school Spelling Bee. These participants were Darian Kinnavy, Isaac Fertel, Emma Bales, Coran Woods, Julian Alberto, Sohan Kolli, Charlie Schmelzer, Logan Merkel, Wali Ahmed, Erin Densberger, Samantha Spiwak, Antonio Lioce, AJ Argyilan, Sahil Sethi, Aleena Siddiqui, Grayson Goetz, Gabe De Guzman, Emaan Mohsinuddin, Michelle Tran, Audrey Dyer, Madilyn Marti, third place winners Elizabeth Dyer and Aakash Bharat, second place winner Vignesh Vakati, and winner Aditya Nadkarni! o Enclosure Washington DC Trip: o There is a mandatory parent/student meeting on Tuesday, March 10 at 6:30 in the cafeteria at Murphy Junior High. Bednarcik HSO Meeting: o The next HSO meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 12th at 6PM in the Community Room. We have invited the District 308 School Board candidates to speak and share their information for the upcoming election. This will be a great opportunity to personally meet the people who may be charged with making decisions for our students and schools. 8th Grade Dance: o Immediately following the HSO meeting on Feb. 12th, there will be an 8th Grade Dance planning meeting at 7PM in the Community Room. Anyone interested in planning this wonderful event for our 8th graders is encouraged to attend. If you have questions please contact Pat Kaiser at [email protected]. Bednarcik Book Drive: o READ ALL ABOUT IT! Do you have new or used books lying around at home that are in great condition? If so, consider donating those books to the Bednarcik Book Drive. The book drive will begin Monday, February 9th through Friday, February 27th. All books will be given to organizations that serve underprivileged children. The 9th hour class that donates the most books by the end of the day on Friday, February 27th will be given gourmet cupcakes to eat during class! Any questions please contact Mrs. DiFiore! Panoramic Wisdom: o Panoramic Wisdom is providing a service that can help bring passion and purpose to your junior high student. To learn more about this service, please review the attached enclosure. o Enclosure 2015-2016 Elective Registration: o Bednarcik counselors, Mrs. Carlisle and Mr. Haynes, will be meeting with 6th grade students on Wednesday, February 11th during Science classes and 7th grade students on Thursday, February 12th during History classes to begin the elective registration process. Students will receive their Elective Course Selection sheet and Elective Course Selection Guide to complete and return by February 19th. Incoming Freshman Course Selections: o Although it is still January, Oswego East is already thinking about when you will be joining the Wolves family. Included on our Bednarcik website is some information concerning the move of eighth grade students from junior high to Oswego East. Important dates to note are included below. January 20, 21, and 22: OEHS counselors met with Grade 8 students to share high school info, upcoming course selection info, elective class info, and 2 - 4 year plans. Teachers will make core course recommendations through Teacher Access from January 28 - February 6. Junior high counselors will meet with students on how to make elective selections on Home Access during the week of February 2nd. Home Access is open to parents and students for elective choices from February 7 - 15. East counselors will meet with Bednarcik students to finalize elective course selections on February 18th. Join us at Welcome to the Pack on April 9. Incoming freshmen Wolves will participate in Frosh Fest on August 17. Social and Emotional Learning: o Calling All Big Elephants! This group has continued to meet and the students leading this group are preparing a Big Elephant week for Bednarcik. Final decisions are being made about the themes for each day and team is very excited to share their ideas school-wide. Bednarcik Yearbooks: o The deadline for ordering a yearbook has passed and no more orders are being taken. If your student has not ordered a book, he or she will need to wait until May when we will be selling a limited number of extra books on a first come, first serve basis. Basketball Pink Out Game: o Save the date! The National Junior Honor Society is hosting the 3rd annual PINK OUT Breast Cancer Awareness basketball game which will be held at 4:30pm on Tuesday, February 10th against Murphy. Numerous raffles will be held which include a 50/50 raffle, pink baskets, and other door prizes. T-shirts can also be purchased for this event (see attachment). Orders can be placed online until February 3rd. All profits will be donated to the American Cancer Society. o Enclosure Math Counts Competition: o The following students have qualified for the next Math Counts Competition on February 14th based on their performance on January 10th. Great job folks! The Bednarcik Team consists of Kyle Twardowski, Aakash V.Bharat, Akul Prakash, and Bharath Sreenivas. The Individual students consist of Aryan Vaidya, Aditya Nadkarni, Aarnav Kunde, Vignesh Vakati, Enan Srivastava, and Nikitha Velavan. Teens for Jeans: o Students at Bednarcik Junior High are collecting gently-used jeans for “Teens for Jeans”, a national campaign in partnership with Aéropostale and DoSomething.org, the largest not-for-profit organization for young people and social change. Teens for Jeans encourage young people across the country to run a jean drive in their school or community to help provide clothing for youth, experiencing homelessness. o Enclosure OEHS Football Skills Combine: o The Oswego East High School FOOTBALL program will be hosting a FREE Football Skills Combine for current 6th – 8th graders at Bednarcik on Wednesday, April 8th. o Enclosure Library Book Renewals/Fines: o Students may renew their books one time on their own on their LRC account. Students my login to their LRC account by clicking on Learning Resource Center, then Bednarcik Card Catalog, then the blue words, Bednarcik. You login with your ID number and six digit birthday. Once in your account, click My Info and renew. However, just because you click renew on your account does not mean it renewed for you. You MUST READ the pop-up. It may not renew for you if the book is on hold for someone else, you’ve already renewed it once yourself or if you have a fine. If you need the book longer, stop by the circulation desk ASAP. If they book is on hold for someone else, we can renew it for one more week. If you have a fine, we can renew the book as long as your fine is fewer than .50 cents. Check your “View history” button to see how many times you have already renewed your book. o Lost Books: If you have lost the book, we will renew it for you for two more weeks so you have time to look for it. If you cannot find the book after renewing it, please pay for the book so we can purchase a library bound copy for all to enjoy again. Please do not purchase the book yourselves since we use a specific vender and require library bound copies to be used at school. Check your “View history” button to see how many times your book has been renewed. If you find the book after paying for it, we do refund your money minus any overdue fines you may have accumulated from the time you lost the book to the time you paid for the book. o Book Fair Rules: If you have an outstanding book fine you will not be allowed into the fair until that fine is paid off. We strongly believe that if you have money for the fair, you have money to take care of your responsibilities. o Printing: Students are required to have their ID card when printing in the LRC. Pick-up/Drop-off: o Parents—PLEASE PULL FORWARD TO DOOR 1 when picking up or dropping off your students. To avoid traffic concerns and back-ups, possible accidents, and to focus on student, staff, and family safety, we would greatly appreciate your cooperation with this. ONGOING NEWS and REMINDERS: Barnes and Noble “My Favorite Teacher” Contest: o This contest/program provides middle and high school students the opportunity to tell their communities how much they appreciate their teachers by writing essays, poems or thank you letters that share how their teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire their teacher. The deadline is March 1, 2015 to get submissions turned in. The local winning teacher will be recognized at an event at the Naperville Barnes & Noble where they will receive a special award acknowledging their achievement and additional recognition and praise from their community. The student who wrote the winning essays or poems will receive a certificate of recognition and will be honored at the Naperville store during a ceremony for the winning teacher. No verbal consent can be taken. • Outside Vendor Food – NOT allowed to be brought in for students during lunch periods. Please do not drop off food for special student occasions or personal lunches. Students will be required to eat in the main office. “Table parties” are also not allowed. • Locker Decorating - Only permitted before school starting at 7:40. Students must have permission from a teacher and the teacher must supervise them. This must be arranged in advance with the teacher. • Locker Sharing - Sharing lockers is not permitted. Each student is to use their assigned locker only. Sharing locker combinations is also not permitted. All students in 6th thru 8th grade are invited to participate. All participants need to have a signed waiver to participate. Waivers are available in the Main Office of each school. The OE Football Coaching staff would like to announce its NEW partnership with Oswego Youth Tackle Football (OYTF). OYTF is now under new leadership and is becoming a true feeder program for OEHS football. We are very excited to start this relationship. Some of the Highlights of OYTF are listed below. Those five regional winning essays will be judged by a separate panel of judges to determine the “Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year.” All panels will judge the entries using the same criteria set forth above. The winning teachers for the regional and national “Barnes & Noble Teacher of the Year” will be the teacher who is the subject of the entry with the highest score. In the event of a tie at any stage of the Contest, the tiebreaker will be based upon the highest score in the first judging criteria, continuing thereafter to each judging criteria in order, as needed, to break the tie. The decisions of the judges will be final and binding on all matters relating to this Contest. Local store winners will be notified on or about March 31, 2015, the regional winners on or about April 6, 2015, and the national “Teacher of the Year” winner on or about May 2, 2015, by email, telephone, and/or express mail. Sponsor is not responsible for any change of email address, mailing address, and/or telephone number of entrants. PRIZES: Students: The student who authors the winning essay, poem, or thank-you letter for each store will receive a certificate of recognition and will be honored at their local store during a ceremony for the winning teacher from their school. Teachers: The winning teacher from each store will be recognized at a special event at a local Barnes & Noble location and each will receive a special award acknowledging their achievement. The five regional winners will each receive a $500 Barnes & Noble Gift Card. The winner of the “Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year” award (the “Grand Prize”) will receive $5,000 and will be recognized at a special event at a store near their residence. The Eligible School at which the Grand Prize winner worked at the time of the Entry submission will receive $5,000 as well. Sponsor is not responsible for canceled, delayed, suspended, or rescheduled events beyond its control. Any portion of this prize not accepted by Grand Prize winner or an Eligible School will be forfeited. A media release will announce the national winner and the contributions that led to him or her being recognized. Prize is non-transferable and no cash equivalent or substitution of Grand Prize is offered, except at the sole discretion of the Sponsor. Approximate Retail Value of each Regional Prize: $500. LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY: Neither Sponsor nor its agencies are responsible for lost, late, stolen, illegible, misdirected, mutilated, incomplete, or non-delivered Entries, or the incorrect or inaccurate capture of Entry or other information or the failure to capture, or loss of, any such information. Sponsor is not responsible for computer system, phone line, hardware, software, or program malfunctions, or other errors, failures, or delays in computer transmissions or network connections that are human or technical in nature. Automated entries are prohibited, and any use of automated devices will cause disqualification. Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual it finds may be tampering with the submission process or operation of this Contest, or may be acting in a non-sportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to threaten, abuse, or harass any other person. Any attempt to deliberately damage or undermine the legitimate operation of this Contest is unlawful and subject to legal action by Sponsor or its agents. As a condition of entering, entrants agree (and agree to confirm in writing): (a) to release Sponsor, its affiliates, subsidiaries, retailers, sales representatives, distributors, and promotion agency; and each of their officers, directors, employees, and agents (“Contest Parties”) from any and all liability, loss, or damage incurred with respect to the awarding, receipt, possession, and/or use or misuse of any prize, including any traveling related thereto; (b) under no circumstances will Entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and participant hereby waives all rights to claim, punitive, incidental, consequential, or any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses; (c) all causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or any prize awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resorting to any form of class action; and (d) any and all claims, judgments, and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, excluding attorneys’ fees and court costs.
