While WQ and IQ are still important, knowing how to relate to others--EQ--is becoming more important in accomplishing aims, such as marketing. Marilyn, my wife, is particularly adept in social-emotional skills, whereas I am more adept in task-oriented skills. My doctoral dissertation compared social-emotional and taskoriented skills in married couples. It turned out that the healthiest families have both. In the past, everyone in the family, especially on farms, had specific roles to carry out: The farm mother cared for the household and young children; the farm father was in charge of the operation outside the house; the older kids’ roles were often assigned by gender. A farm woman who has her own business told me recently that her sometimes-traditional husband commented, “I throw my laundry down the chute and ‘poof’ it appears in my closet pressed and ready to wear.” Her husband, she says, is also nontraditional, for he fixes their household appliances; moreover, their collegiate daughter probably spent nearly as much time working with him as a teenager on their farm as she spent helping her mother. Sharing roles within a family, such as fathers helping with childcare and household chores and mothers helping with farm work, has definite benefits these days. The farm partners who can exchange roles are more adaptable than those who cling to traditional duties when stress affects their lives. How different life on the farm was when I milked cows by hand, hoed weeds out of soybean fields, and cleaned barns with a shovel. Is farm and ranch life better? You tell me, and please indicate what you think are important shifts in farm culture over the past generation. Quani Farm life is much different than it was a generation ago species. Cropping, storing foods and raising livestock provided the residents of farming communities with a mostly steady supply of nutrients and materials for survival during lean times, such as winter and droughts. The agricultural age will continue into the foreseeable future, but with additional advances associated with the industrial and information ages. Historians say the industrial age began largely in the 18th century. Mechanical devices increasingly replaced human and animal power; scientific advances improved knowledge, health, and led to complex technology. Machines, electricity and sophisticated technologies made agriculture and all human lives much more efficient and productive over the past 250 years. The information age is changing agriculture again. Today’s farmers are connected electronically with practically everyone. Agriculture is becoming a social-networking occupation in which relationships are critical to success. Older farmers mentioned nostalgically how much fun it was to get together with neighbors “to put up hay” a generation ago when they stacked hay bales without complaining on hot summer afternoons. Now neighbors communicate by phone, email, and video conferencing, and more often than not, without physical contact. A 78-year old friend who raises cattle says, “I like to see who I’m talking to. I can’t tell if someone is teasing or being honest without looking into his eyes.” EQ (emotional quotient) is as important as WQ (work quotient) and IQ (intelligence quotient) these days for farm people. As the adage says: “People don’t remember what you said, but how you made them feel.” The days when one could succeed in farming by working harder and JUST ARRIVED: Dr. Michael R. Rosmann, Ph.D Dr. Michael R. Rosmann, Ph.D Life on the farm and ranch has changed from a generation ago. A generation is usually considered to be 25-30 years, or the age span between parents and their children. First-time mothers in the U.S. averaged 26.3 years old in 2014, up from 24.9 years in 2000. The gap between family offspring is also lengthening. Today’s article looks at cultural changes from a generation ago in the lives of people engaged in agriculture. This article expresses my viewpoint mainly, along with comments from farming friends around the country. Okay readers, I would like your thoughts too. I will summarize them in a follow-up article without any identifying information except the state where you live. For example, a generation ago few farmers and ranchers carried cell phones; they were large and bulky and reception was often scattered because there were fewer cell phone towers then. Today nearly all adults in the U.S., farmers in particular, regularly carry smart phones to allow them to connect with people and internet sites around the world. Agriculture has mostly moved through the agricultural and industrial ages, and into the information age. The agricultural age began when people purposefully planted, cultivated, and harvested seeds, beginning some 15,000 or so years ago in Southwest Asia and a few thousand years later in eastern Asia, Europe, and, the Americas. Animal domestication for food, fibers, and draft purposes followed several thousand years after cropping in most locations. Agriculture allowed humans to remain in preferred locations moreor-less enduringly where they could establish cities and diversify occupations, unlike when they were nomadic hunter-gatherers. Agriculture enabled humans to become Earth’s dominant Monday-Friday 8aM-5pM Saturday 8aM-noon Stop In & Check Us Out! Someone had handed it to me at a gathering, and my purse became a makeshift grocery bag. When I pulled the zucchini out of my purse, my daughter, who was preschool-age at the time, looked at me in amazement. I think she wondered if I had a magic purse that grew long-necked, shiny green things. After I set it on the countertop, she studied it and sniffed it. Then she helped me wash and grate it. Finally, she helped me transform it into some zucchini bread. If you have a mass-producing zucchini plant, did you miss an opportunity? Aug. 8 was “National Sneak Some Zucchini Into Your Neighbor’s Porch Day.” If so, perhaps you can choose your own day to continue the recognition and distribution process. Few foods are associated with as many good-natured jokes as zucchini. Zucchini plants are very easy to grow and, most of the time, produce an abundance of green fruit. Yes, we consider zucchini vegetables on the menu, but technically, a zucchini is the fruit of the plant. Zucchini is a type of summer squash and also is known by other names. The name “zucchini” comes from the Italian word for squash. A botanist might call it by its scientific name, “Cucurbita pepo.” If you want to disguise the contents of your casserole, try renaming the dish. In France, zucchini is called “courgette.” In England and Ireland, zucchini is called “marrow.” Would you like a slice of “marrow bread”? Those alternate names make “zucchini” sound more appetizing, don’t they? You need to keep an eye on zucchini in your garden or they will grow large. In fact, if you stood the largest zucchini on record on its end, it would have been more than 5 feet 9 inches tall. This record setter was a skinny fruit, though, at 65 pounds. For best quality, select zucchini that are small to medium in size. Zucchini should have shiny skin and be free of bruises. The bruised areas are more likely to spoil rapidly. Try to use refrigerated zucchini within a week. Nutritionwise, zucchini is fairly high in vitamin C, provides fiber and is low in calories. To get more fiber, eat the skin. Zucchini has inspired cooks to create recipes that range from traditional to the slightly unusual as they chop, grate and slice zucchini. Most of us have tasted zucchini muffins, cake, casseroles or salads. How about zucchini fritters or zucchini curry? You might want to try to use zucchini as a “vessel” to fill with a favorite casserole, and after cooking, slice your zucchini boat into servings. Or try one of the more recent kitchen tools that allow you to make skinny zucchini noodles called “zoodles.” Personally, I like to saute sliced zucchini with onion and add some salsa from a jar to the consistency I like. I have a quick side dish without a real recipe. If you enjoy surfing the web, a simple search for “zucchini recipes” will provide you with hundreds of ideas. Visit https://www. ag.ndsu.edu/food, click on “recipes” and search our database for zucchini recipes, too. In the meantime, here’s a chocolatey treat made with antioxidantrich cocoa powder and fiber-rich whole-wheat flour, plus a not-sosecret ingredient. Add a thin layer of frosting if you’d like or simply dust with powdered sugar to keep the calorie count moderate. 60th Anniversary Don & Eileen Geske There will be a 60th Wedding Anniversary Party in honor of Don & Eileen Geske, Saturday, August 27 & Sunday, August 28 beginning at 3 p.m. each day at their farm home in Verona, ND. Gazette Extra Circ.* • August 22, 2016 • Page 6 Beef Talk by Kris Ringwall Beef Specialist, NDSU Extension Service by Kris Ringwall Beef Specialist, NDSU Extension Serviceof calves put 1,610 pounds What is the bottom line for an Aug. 1 bull turnout? For openers, the answer is a 1,610-pound steer at harvest 22 months later with a carcass value on the rail of $2,224 and a return to the cattle producer of $896 after subtracting cow costs. Wow! We’ve seen some good numbers during the last three years of good markets. Plus, the calving season is more relaxed with an Aug. 1 bull turnout. In fact, one could say excessive calving work went away. Those long pre-calving prep sheets got a lot shorter. Now that calving is over and the bulls are turned out, cows need to be fertile and cycling while nursing the aggressive growth of this year’s calf crop. Bulls need to be ready, conditioned and willing to breed. Breeding cows is not easy; risks are fairly high. Plans need to be ready to handle any issues regarding bull health, structure and stamina. Already, two bulls have been pulled at the Dickinson Research Extension Center: One was due to injury or fatigue and the other was due to questionable breeding activity. This the fifth August breeding season at the center. No issues have surfaced regarding latesummer breeding. All the too hot, too dry, too whatever reasons not to August breed never have materialized. So is this a good business proposition in the bigger picture of the cattle industry, or what? Obviously, not all the work goes away because calves need to be processed at branding, and the usual pasture routines and cattle movement need to be implemented. The calves have done well throughout the year and, as noted many times, producers need to be prepared to make up the difference in less time in summer pastures for the May-born calves. How does one do that? At the center, May calves follow all the traditional pasture turn-in dates and pasture-removal dates, plus slightly later weaning times. In fact, the center may settle on an early December weaning time. For the last few years, the center has been monitoring the calves. The center runs two cow herds: One is a larger-framebased herd and the second is a smaller-framed set of cows. Although the smaller-framed cows have done well, that set of calves will be reserved for a later discussion. But let’s look at those calves that are more reflective of the typical calf in the upper Great Plains region. Three years of data (2012 to 2014) collected by Songul Şenturklu and Doug Landblom, animal scientists at the center, show steer calves traditionally have been weaned at 567 pounds in the fall and overwintered with an average daily gain of 1.3 pounds. To evaluate how the steer calves should be handled, half of the steers were turned out to grass in early May as yearlings weighing 780 pounds, and half were sent to the feedlot. Let’s first look at the grassfed cattle, which came off summer grass in mid-August at 1,047 pounds and subsequently grazed a field of pea-barley intercrop followed by unharvested corn. The steers weighed 1,230 pounds by late fall. At that time, they were sent to the feedlot for 82 days on feed and were harvested at 1,610 pounds. The three-year average carcass value was $2,224, returning $896 after subtracting cow costs. Those are some exceptional numbers and are very reflective of the positive outcomes many cow-calf producers were experiencing during that same time. The steer calves sent to the feedlot in May spent an average of 218 days on feed. Those steers were harvested at 1,516 pounds, for an average carcass value of $2,073, returning $620 to the center after subtracting cow costs. In today’s environment, cattle producers would have difficulty complaining about either set of calves. But current price declines will lower the market value of the carcasses considerably. So if we were to redo this study this year, the dollar values would be considerably reduced. While the center’s beef cattle operational plan is not for everyone, everyone could do the center’s beef operation if he or she set a goal down the road, and perhaps a rather long road, and do what the center does. By switching the cow herd to an easier calving period (bull turnout Aug. 1), opportunities are created to capture the value of later-born calves. This means implementation of a backgrounding phase within the beef operation. This phase, when appropriate, opens the door to maintaining the calves in a summer grass program, followed by extensive grazing of summer cereals, standing corn and assorted cover crops. At that point, the center had 1,230-pound steers to sell. Annual cow costs, plus the winter, summer and fall grazing of the calves, are budgeted at $1,000. The goal remains: Produce beef at a production cost that will provide a profit. Today’s calf market still should bring a positive return for these cattle. beef on the market The next goal is to continue to reduce the daily cost of the cattle production at the center. Managerial skills and production logic should get the job done. More later! I hope these numbers trigger some thoughts that move the beef business forward into a strong future. I suspect that I am telling you, the small-business owner, to consider ways to grow your business: ways to add more staff, sell more, increase the size of your store and, the ultimate, increase the number of locations you have. All of those are certainly worthy of your planning and effort. But my encouragement to think big actually is something else. My definition of “think big” includes: * Setting big goals for family and community support * Developing plans to be a long-running business, whether that’s through being multigen- erational or other means of transition * Finding and internally developing employees who have big talent * Having a big heart * Undertaking new projects * Generating big memories * Providing unbounded happiness As you can see from this list, the big goals focus on the social and community aspects of your business. Some will challenge this idea, saying that a business must be a business first. And you can’t deny the fact that being around to accomplish any of your big goals does require a business that is profitable. Yet thinking big along the lines suggested becomes a key for a profitable business. These suggestions - you don’t need to undertake all of them - form part of your brand. Your company becomes noted for them and they become part of your story. They distinguish your business from the others. So as a small-business owner, think big!
