Meri Devore launched her bracelet-based HEET jewelry
collection in 2009, and HEET just keeps getting hotter. “It’s
been overwhelming, really,” says the Palm Beach Gardens
mother of two (the “e” ’s in HEET stand for her children’s
names: Evan and Emily).
Manufactured by hand in Palm Beach Gardens, HEET
is carried by 175 stores internationally, and Devore recently
inked a deal with Swarovski, makers of the crystals she uses
on the bracelets, which are notable for their sparkle, presence
Meri Devore
and pleasing weight.
“One of my goals is to make stuff that’s built to last,” says
Devore, a graphic designer by training.
Prices range from $75 to $700. The most popular piece — the Rockstar
bracelet, four skinny leather straps dotted with crystals and fastened with a
seatbelt-style clasp — retails for $250.
Envy of Palm Beach, Le Reve in Palm Beach Gardens and Barbara Katz in
Boca Raton are a few of the local stores that stock HEET, and ShopHEET.com
is scheduled to launch soon.

Wine stoppers from Wellington
Juan Montalvo jokes that he works
in the world’s smallest factory — his
Wellington garage, where he produces
a line of wine stoppers spotlighted in
Juan Montalvo the November issue of O, the Oprah
Magazine.
The retiree, who ran a chemical
plant in Belle Glade for 35 years, has made items with
a lathe for decades as a hobby. So when his wife said
she needed some bottle stoppers, “I said, ‘I think I can
do that on the lathe.’ Then one thing led to another.”
And, through a friend of a friend of a friend, it led to
the influential pages of Oprah.
Montalvo calls the industrial-chic stoppers “a combination of art and workmanship, but I am the creator
of the thing, so I think it’s beautiful,” he said with a
laugh.
The stoppers start at $10 and are available at

Then Again, by Diane
Keaton
Diane Keaton’s book about her
life is not a straight-up, chronological memoir. It’s a collage that
mixes Keaton’s words with those
of her mother, Dorothy Hall, who
died in 2008 and left behind a
huge and chaotic legacy of 85
scrapbooklike journals.
There is every reason to
expect that Keaton’s braiding of
her own story with her mother’s
in Then Again will be a rambling
effort at best, but instead it is a
far-reaching, heartbreaking, absolutely lucid book about mothers, daughters, childhood, aging,

when she was 24,”
writes Keaton, who adopted the
first of her two children when
she was 50. Dorothy was a young
housewife when she raised
Diane and her three younger siblings. And when they left home,
they left her at a loss, and the
journal writing began.
“At 54 Dorothy was put out to
pasture with 32 more years of
living staring her in the face,”
Keaton writes. “At 65 there is no
pasture, and I’m not lonely.”
It is terrifically poignant to
learn that Keaton, whose public
personality was that of someone so charmingly addled, had
to deal so seriously with her
mother’s mounting confusion.
At 63, already frightened by the
prospect of memory loss, Dorothy wrote a long journal entry

Look Hot for Summer
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2011
One of the coolest parts of summer,
as any avid diner knows, is dining
out. The tide of seasonal residents
has ebbed, leaving prime tables for
the taking. Wait time whittles away.
And dining deals run rampant. What’s
there not to love, bargain-hunting
gastronomes?
We asked local eateries to submit
their summer dining deals and they
responded, resoundingly so. They sent
us word of their hot seasonal specials,
their perfect prix fixe prices, their
happy hour happenings.
While the popular Palm Beach
Restaurant Summer promotion
— which featured discounted prix
fixe menus at top restaurants on Palm
Beach island — is not happening this
year, there are plenty of individual deals
to keep a diner busy all summer.
