Presidents Thoughts - Altoona Corvette Club
August 2016 Presidents Thoughts By Club President Randy Johnson Hi Everyone Coming up for the month of August our calendar of events looks as though we will have an opportunity to get out and drive these beautiful Corvettes, starting with our club car show at DelGrosso’s Park on Sunday August, 7th. Anyone interested in helping set up for the show, please join me at 7:00 am and we will have coffee and donuts and get prepared for the car show. On Saturday August, 13th at 8:00 am we will have morning coffee at Dunkin Donuts in Altoona, which we seem to be having a good turn out at this gathering. It could be the coffee and donuts :). However, I enjoy the company of good friends and Corvette owners. On Friday August 19th we our having our second Zeigler cruise-in from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. At this cruisein the club will be having a bake sale to help raise money for the kids of WALY WARMTH and I believe this is a great idea. Anyone interested in making something delicious for the bake sale can contact Linda Wanco or my wife Laurie. Another great event for this month is Corvettes At Carlisle starting on Thursday August, 25th through Sunday the 28th. We will have our tent set up at L-130, L-134, so please stop by for a place to rest and have a cool drink after walking around and shopping for that new Corvette. I hope to see you all there. As always, I would like to say THANK YOU for giving me the opportunity of being president of your Altoona Corvette Club. Page 6 Altoona Corvette Club The Arthur Colussy Collection ~ by Mary Lou Colussy Arthur Colussy had a dream. Growing up in the car business, he was surrounded by the new Chevrolet cars at his family’s place of business, Colussy Chevrolet in Bridgeville, PA. Art was present in New York at the 1953 GM Motorama at the Waldorf Astoria in 1953 when the new Corvettes became a reality. This is when his dream started. As a teenager he saw the beautiful vehicles year after year coming into the showroom. He told himself that he would own a Corvette when he could save up enough money to purchase his very own. As a young man he did own a few Corvettes, but for one reason or another these were traded in for more “practical” family type cars. So when he retired from the car business, he wanted his dream to reach fruition. Art’s dream as a more mature man was not to own just one of these beautiful cars, but to own the last of each series. equipped with a four speed transmission and a 360 hp fuel injected engine. Also included are a posi-traction axle and metallic brakes. One of the next generation of C2’s is also in Art’s collection. It is a sunflower yellow 1967 with a black interior, 327 cu. in./350 hp. with a 4 speed transmission. It has side mounted exhaust, power windows and the rare head rests option. This 1967 is a NCRS Top Flight winner. The next two Corvettes in Art’s collection are not only the last of their generations, but are Collector Edition models and are both unrestored originals. The 1982, has under 10,000 miles and is also a Triple Crown winner, like the 1962. This C-3 vehicle is the last of its series. This Vette has a silver/beige exterior and interior. It is equipped with an automatic transmission (the only one in the whole collection) with overdrive. It has a 5.7 liter cross fire fuel injected engine. It was the first Corvette with a base price exceeding $20,000.00. 1982 was the first year that all Corvettes were built in the Bowling Green, Kentucky plant. The next edition to the Collection He purchased a 1962 solid axle is Art’s 1996 Sebring silver red convertible, which happens to Collector edition with a red interior. be one of the last of the C-1 It also has only 10,000 original series. This vehicle is a triplemiles and is the last of the C-4 crown winner--NCRS Duntov, generation. This car has a six Bloomington Gold and Vette Gold speed manual transmission with a Spinner --accomplished with a LT4 engine. It has selective real frame off restoration completed in time damping suspension with a 1991. It has a solid red exterior, a 330 hp, 5.7 engine. red interior, a white convertible top His 2004 is the last of the C-5 and a removable hard top. It is generation. It is a Z06 Commemorative edition with only 9,000 miles currently on the odometer. It is #853 of 2025 built with that year. The C-6, is last of its generation, but undoubtedly, not the least of Art’s collection of vehicles. It is his 2013 ZR1 with a 60th Anniversary edition package making it 1 of 131 vehicles of its kind and it has a powerful 638 hp/LS9 engine! The most recent addition to Art’s collection, is not the last of its generation. It is a C-7, but it is his driver. This beautiful, 2015 Laguna blue Stringray coupe has a black interior with a Z51 performance package, 7 speed transmission with magnetic ride control. Not the last of the series, but a fun car to drive! To house these cars, Art has given them a home of their own--a new garage. It is large enough to put all the collection except, the 2015, in one place. It has two lifts in it to accommodate the 5th and 6th Corvettes. It Art decides to purchase anymore Corvettes he will need to also purchase another lift! Art and Mary Lou are thankful for being so fortunate. Life is good! General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] on May 16 trademarked the ZR1 name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, supporting rumors the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is set for a return. Recently, it's been reported GM will send off the current C7 Corvette with a model positioned above the Z06. This model is said to be bowing at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show... perhaps badged a ZR1. GM applies the ZR1 name to its most extreme Corvettes (ZR-1 for earlier generations) and so far has used it on the C3, C4 and C6 generations. There could be even more significance to this car than just its name, though. It may just end up as the last front-engined Corvette because the C8 generation is thought to be switching to a midengined layout. The last ZR1 was launched for the 2009 model year and was powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 delivering 638 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque. Note, the recent trademark filing alternatively could simply be a way for GM to protect a storied name. An earlier trademark filing for ZR1 had expired in 2001.
