Happy and Glorious is a familiar phrase in the National Anthem, which seeks the best for both the person of the reigning Sovereign, and the Nation which Constitutional Monarchy is said to embody and represent... Great Britain in all its rich and exciting diversity. Special tribute was paid to seventy thousand volunteers giving a welcome and showing generous unpaid hospitality to competitors and spectators. Their contribution contrasts with unsmiling pessimists grabbing the headlines in the run up the Games: clearly the worst fears and dire predictions were in the event overwhelmed by the positive selfgiving, exuberance, and creativity of so many, overall good organisation and management, gifts and achievements of young people from around world, and the faith which committed eye-watering sums of money – an investment bringing rewards which cannot be measured in just monetary terms. Of course a review will reveal mistakes and oversights, but let not these detract from what has been for millions of people a wonderful enjoyable experience, and a testament to human health and wholeness. Before Harvest, preparing, sowing, and cherishing are essential, things to be done before anything grows and matures. And a wise Church invests resources in young people, providing an appropriate diet, coaching and guidance, discipline and encouragement – and its “volunteers” are those of all ages who are crucial in welcoming, supporting and befriending. A Church too should and can be happy and glorious. Thanks to those who came to the Tower early making it possible for us join a spectacular national event, and how the day ended with an amazing opening ceremony. We have unique and lasting reminder of London 2012 and the Thirtieth Olympiad association with Weymouth and Portland. One of the altar embroidered paraments at Winterbourne Abbas has five rings representing the continents and a yacht in full sail... imaginative creativity to pass on and inspire. Why not drop in and look! Despite oceans of negativity and grumbles washing around before and at the beginning of the Games, there have subsequently been huge waves of pride and celebration. So many young people from around the world achieving in a variety of sports; so many Brits winning gold, silver and bronze; so much transparent humanity shown in tears and laughter, modesty and recognition that others have provided training, encouragement and vocal support. At Monkey’s Jump Park-and-Rise, a sea of cars especially in the second week of the games and people carried in state-of-the-art buses. Can we replace our shaking/rattling 31 buses please ? Each of us will have our own moments to remember. The Olympic flame rising up into one fire at the opening ceremony; Jessica Ennis smile at winning gold in the triathlon; Gymnastics and unbelievable control and strength; Terrifying BMX and mountain biking as well as the Velodrome; The first ever Saudi woman participant running with her hijab in Ramadan; Rowers, kayakers, horse-riders; - the list is endless. Maybe even a less-than-inspiring harmonisation of the National Anthem, but good that we heard it so many times! What was special for you? What will your lasting impression be? Are you inspired to encourage young people to sport? JHG “Some of you will be baffled, I can guarantee it... I hope you enjoy that kind of Liquorice Allsorts of things. Many of you won’t understand that reference, either.” - Director Danny Boyle prepares international journalists for the opening ceremony. – 10 – Valley & Valence Parish Magazine September 2012 The Pass-It-On Fundraising Campaign... and you. In the June/July edition of the newsletter, I wrote about the Pass-It-On fundraising campaign which we are planning for October. This campaign is very important for the continued wellbeing of the 3 Valley churches, to ensure that they are available to all whether regularly or just occasionally and to make sure that they remain in good condition for those who simply enjoy them as buildings. Inflation rapidly erodes income and we need to be able to pay our bills and move back into the black on an annual basis instead of relying on reserves as we are doing at the moment. To do this, we need to renew our financial appeal regularly, about every four of five years and the Pass-It-On campaign is a tried and tested way of achieving this objective. We all expect the church buildings and the Vicar to be available when we want to arrange a baptism, a wedding or a funeral. Please therefore be ready when the Pass-It-On folder is delivered to you and be thinking how you personally should respond. The campaign will be launched in St Martin’s church on Sunday 7th October. Please check the notice board in the porch of each church and the Martinstown website for confirmation of the launch date. AMONG THE SAINTS IN SEPTEMBER CHARLES FUGE LOWDER 1820-1880 is remembered (on 9 September) as one of many priests working in the East End of London in Victorian England. He was inspired by 17th century French priest, Vincent de Paul (remembered on 27 September), who worked among peasants and galley-slaves in Paris. DORSET HISTORIC CHURCHES TRUST SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE Saturday 8 September The Dorset Historic Churches Trust exists to make grants towards the upkeep of all church buildings in Dorset and over the years the 4 churches in our benefice have each received grants from DHCT. The Trust’s main source of income, which makes these grants possible, is the annual sponsored cycle ride which this Lowder, with other clergy and a community year is on Saturday 8th September. If you of Anglican sisters, worked in some of appreciate the church buildings in our the most deprived areas of London, and became role models for Christians to be villages please help to maintain them by pastors and workers for reform in society. sponsoring one of our riders; sponsorship forms are available in each church. Lowder is remembered too for a particular style of worship which placed the Eucharist at the heart of Anglican worship. – 11 – Many thanks for your support – John Crawford Winterbourne St.Martin Parish Council Meeting The meeting dated Monday 23rd July was held against the backdrop of the worst flooding experienced in this area for nearly sixty years. Not surprisingly this and a number of related topics formed a major part of the agenda. Items covered included: To co-opt a Councillor to serve on the council Following the sad loss of Chris Taylor a co-opted post was made available. Two parishioners expressed interest and Mr Andy Whitty was successful following the voting process. Financial Matters Reports were made on payments and receipts made since the last meeting. The current balance is within the planned budget. Future expenditure includes replacement of fencing at the bus stop at Mallards and the provision of a new notice board in that location. The Parish Council garage is available for rent – details have been posted on the garage door. none of the current proposals will impact on the Martinstown area. We are required to make submissions on the plan by the end of July and it was agreed that we would raise an objection to the proposed Park & Ride south of the Tesco roundabout which falls within the Parish of Monkton. There was a general feeling that any attempt to develop land beyond the bypass would be an unnecessary breach of the current boundary. We continue to review the effect of the new Localism Bill with regard to the overall planning process and its impact on our community. Flood Warden Matters We are all indebted to our Flood Warden, Stephen Slade for his efforts both during and after the severe flooding we experienced. Stephen has had meetings with the relevant Planning Applications There were no significant applications within the village for discussion. West Dorset, Weymouth & Portland Draft Local Plan Councillors have examined the document and it was agreed that personnel in WDDC and the County Council to rectify the existing damage – 12 – – Monday 23 July 2012 and to look at ways of preventing a reoccurrence. As a result of that we have already seen a number of repair/cleaning up activities and the council run a “walk in” caravan unit on the village green on 1st August to enable parishioners to discuss their concerns and ideas with a variety of qualified personnel. Early indications are that the unit was very well attended. Finally we would also urge anyone with responsibility for a river frontage to make every effort to keep the water free from a build up of weed. At this time of the year the accumulation can be quite rapid and its impact upon the safe passage of water significant. The water table is still exceptionally high for the time of the year and will require regular monitoring as we move closer towards the Autumn months. THE VALLEY CLUB Jade Dragon Snow Mountains With all the excitement of the Olympic Games, and the Paralympics still to come, I’m sure many of you enjoyed seeing all the fantastic coverage from London and venues around Britain, and the spectacular views of Weymouth & Portland where the sailing took place. The whole Country took on a positive vibe and Weymouth had a fantastic atmosphere and, even though sailing is not deemed to be a spectator sport, thousands of people (including Clive & I) packed the Nothe and surrounding areas to enjoy the sailing events. The weather even behaved itself and we were able to bask in the sunshine, as well as in the success of Team GB. With Autumn fast approaching, we will begin The Valley Club’s programme with an illustrated talk on “China” by Richard Collier on Monday 17th September at 8.00pm in Martinstown Village Hall. Richard is a very entertaining speaker and many of you will remember the superb illustrated talk he gave us on “The Lake District” in 2010. Richard has travelled to many parts of the World and is a keen mountaineer. His photography is stunning and this twin screen production will take in a tour of Yunnan, which is situated in the Southwest of China, being the sixth largest province, and known as the Land of Eternal Spring. With commentary and Naxi folk music showing rural life and a glimpse of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountains and the Yangtze River, this promises to be a very entertaining evening. Oh, and talking of Panto... Which hospital is entitled to all royalties on J M Barrie’s Peter Pan since they were signed over by the author in 1929? Great Ormond Street Hospital. Barrie’s “boy who wouldn’t grow up” is frequently produced as a Panto. It began as a play in 1904 before it was novelised as “Peter and Wendy” in 1911. The lead character is usually able to fly across the stage and sometimes round the auditorium so it is usually very spectacular. The various factions are often at loggerheads in Neverland (Lost Boys, Pirates, Indians, Mermaids and, not least, the Crocodile) and Tinker Bell hardly likes anybody! There have been numerous film/TV adaptations of the story and spin-offs connected with it. There have been books - including a sequel in 2006 “Peter Pan in Scarlet” - as well as public statues in different parts of the world. Peter Pan is an iconic figure - even Cliff Richard was regularly compared with him! – 21 – S t M a r y ’s C h u r c h W i n t e r b o u r n e A b b a s MINI FAYRE Saturday 15th September 12-4pm Outside the Church Teas, Cake Stall, Bric-a-Brac,Tombola Come along, find a bargain, and meet your neighbours! Winterbourne Abbas - The Coach and Horses public house The Coach and Horses public house has been serving customers under that name since at least 1814 when it is mentioned in records concerning the bankruptcy of Joseph Hawkins of Radipole. Recorded in Hunt’s directory of 1851 the landlord was John Purkis who also appears on the census of the same year aged 46 with his wife Elizabeth, also 46 and two children, Henry aged 9 and Eliza aged 6. He employed at least two people, Frederick Hopkins the ostler aged 42 and Jane Hardy, house servant aged 23. John Purkis is listed in the Post Office directory of 1855 at the Coach and Horses when it also described as a Posthouse. By 1859 however, John Purkis had left the inn and it was then in the occupation of Samuel Warren who also traded as a wheelwright and blacksmith. The directory of 1875 lists John Thomas Warren as the innkeeper. He was the son of Samuel Warren, born in Beaminster in 1834. The Coach and Horses was mentioned in the Times newspaper in November 1876 in connection with a poaching affair and murder that had taken place near Yeovil just over the county border in Somerset. Two men answering the description of two murderers being hunted were reported as being at the inn and were traced in the vicinity. Whether they were caught nearby is not stated. By 1881 the occupation of the Inn had passed to John Daw who was still there in 1895. John Daw is listed on the 1881 census aged 36, an innkeeper and also a farmer of 40 acres. His wife Sarah, aged 37 was from nearby Toller and their children, Arthur W aged 3, Laura M aged 2 and a 6 month old son Alda M were all born at Winterbourne Abbas. Living with them was a cousin, Sarah A Hiscock aged 33 born at Toller and a 19 year old servant from Bridport, Charlotte M J Whittle. John Daw appears in directories of 1889 and 1895 at the inn. It is an old coaching inn on the old turnpike road from Dorchester to Bridport. Once complete with stables, it surely must have been the call for many a traveller. Frederick Hopkins mentioned in the 1851 census would have tended the travellers’ horses while their masters took refreshment. with thanks to www.weymouth-dorset.co.uk – 23 – Martinstown Cricket Club September 2012 The Martinstown Under 18s finished second in the Bright Sparks under 18 cup behind Cerne Valley, ahead of Dorchester. Saturday Second team skipper Chris Monteith was a welcome addtion to the coaching team and he ran a fun-packed programme for our 7-9 year olds. Jon Nichols, Matt Rimmer and Stuart Dawson did a brilliant job with the with the softball under 9s (who played matches against Weymouth and Powerstock). Peter Lappin became manager of the under 11s with help from Ross Stewart and Lee House. They also developed as players, impressing with a string of fine performances. Not a lotta people know that... The term originated in India, deriving from the Gujarati bangalo, which in turn derives from Hindi bangla, meaning “Bengali” and used elliptically for a “house in the Bengal style”. Such houses were traditionally small, only one storey and detached, and had a wide verandah. The term was first found in English from 1696, where it was used to describe “bungales or hovells” in India for English sailors of the East India Company, which do not sound like very grand lodgings. Later it became used for the spacious homes or official lodgings of officials of the British Raj, and was so known in Britain and later America, where it initially had high status and exotic connotations, and began to be used in the late 19th Century for large country or suburban houses built in an Arts and Crafts or other Western vernacular style – essentially as large cottages, a term also sometimes used. From: Hobson-Jobson: A Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases, and of Kindred Terms, Etymological, Historical, Geographical and Discursive ...and all these words also originated in India anaconda, atoll, avatar, bandana, bangle, banyan, bazaar, calico, cashmere, catamaran, chai, cot, chintz, cheetah, cheroot, chutney, coolie, cummerbund, cushy, dinghy, dungaree, fakir, ginger, guru, indigo, jodhpurs, juggernaut, jungle, jute, karma, kedgaree, khaki, loot, mandarin, mango, mantra, mogul, mongoose, mullah, musk, mulligatawny, mynah, nirvana, orange, pyjamas, pariah, paisley, pepper, punch (the drink), pundit, seersucker, serendipity, shampoo, sugar, swami, swastika, teak, thug, verandah. It would have been the centre of an estate known as a villa. So, if you are doing a spot of digging, keep an eye open for interesting bits of ancient masonry, or even Roman coins. Time Team, here we come! Meanwhile, we have a splendid Roman Town House in Dorchester, discovered in 1936. Park the car, or get off the bus, at Top-o’Town, walk over to the County Library, and then down the side of County Hall. At the very back, hidden below street level but beautifully shown, are the remains of a 4th century desirable residence. Originally it would have been just inside the north-west corner of the Roman town of Durnovaria, and it was the home of a well-off family. It was occupied for about seventy-five years, but by whom? Perhaps the owner was a Roman official, a senior civil servant, a tax-collector; or he might have been a corn merchant, buying the wheat from the Roman villas and the Celtic villages. We’ll never know – but his family lived well. They probably spoke Latin, and would have gone down into the town to the Baths (near Waitrose), or to the – 31 – shops in South Street, or to the Temple (it’s never been found) or to the Forum for the latest gossip. The house itself has two wings, and parts of both had underfloor heating known as hypocausts. The external furnaces are clearly visible, and would have been stoked by slaves. The smoke was ducted upwards through flues in the walls. The walls are made of pieces of flint, with layers of limestone to hold them together. They were plastered inside and out to give a smooth surface, and the outside was painted red. The house was only one storey, and it was roofed with slabs of limestone. The mosaic floors are an outstanding feature: the ultimate luxury for an upwardlymobile Roman (or Romanised-British) family. They were probably made by a master-mosaicist working in the town. He seems to have had a book of designs which he showed to prospective customers, because in other places in Dorchester and in villas across Dorset and Somerset there are similar designs and features. One wing of the house was given an all-over roof in the 1990s, with transparent side panels for easier viewing. Go on – take a look – it’s free!
