Photo Op
October 1 - 28
Laura H. Miles Gallery
Reception on October 1, 6 - 8 p.m.
The accessibility of photography and the pervasiveness
of photographic images are both the triumph and the
challenge of photography. How does an artist optimize
the opportunities offered by this powerful, widely
available medium while honoring their own personal vision?
Whether they’ve selected unusual subject matter, taken
a unique approach to a common subject, or used an old,
new or special photographic process, the artists in this
exhibit achieve a variety of solutions to the challenge of
making the photographic medium their own.

Director’s
Note
Dear Friends,
We’re welcoming a new program year with
expanded opportunities to both make and enjoy
art! You’ll find an exciting range of new art
forms and many new classes in this catalog.
It’s a great time to try something new or share
with your friends so they might enjoy the
Art Center, too. This fall you’ll see more art
on display throughout Ridgedale Center as the
Partners in Art program expands dramatically!
It’s an exciting time for the arts in our
communities. We hope you’ll get involved.
Looking back on the past year, I’m grateful
for the many bright spots, a few of which are
worth noting. Despite changes, our watercolor
program is stronger than ever with new ArtistInstructors and new class offerings to keep up
with demand. In addition to our regular events,
the Eye Candy: Crazy Quilt and Abstraction
in Action exhibits were very popular and
received good publicity. The Art Center Café is
thriving with an expanded menu and growing
lunch crowd, thanks to Chef Melinda Alves.
We received a generous Arts Access Grant
from the Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB)
underwriting another year of outreach
programming and an Arts Engagement
in American Communities Grant from the
National Endowment for the Arts (NEA),
which is funding the management of the
expanded exhibits at Ridgedale Center. And,
most recently, is the outstanding success of our
Seeing is Believing Spring Fundraiser which
exceeded expectations by nearly double.
As we close the past fiscal year, the positive trends
continue to be encouraging. Our program and
event participation, despite closing the shop at
Ridgedale, continues to expand. This is clear evidence
that our work is relevant, needed and valued by
all who are touched by the Art Center’s program.
I want to extend our deepest appreciation to all
who sponsored and gave so generously at our
Seeing is Believing Spring Fundraiser and to our
generous donors who responded to the Spring
Appeal. I am continually grateful for those who
believe in the Art Center’s mission and don’t
hesitate a moment to offer support! These gifts
help keep our classes affordable and accessible,
plus enable continuing outreach programming
to underserved audiences. Thanks again to
everyone who participated, and if you missed it,
it’s never too late! Please call with a credit card
number or send a tax-deductible contribution.
This next year is going to be a winner! New
classes, continuing outreach programs and
excellent exhibits both here and at Ridgedale.
There’s never been a better time to get involved
with the Minnetonka Center for the Arts.
Best regards,
Roxanne L. Heaton
Executive Director

watercolor Artist-Instructor Catherine Hearding will
have eight paintings exhibited in the University of
Minnesota Arboretum’s Reedy Gallery from September 1
through January 15. Lanesboro Art Gallery will feature a
solo exhibition of her works entitled Drawn to the Light in
Lanesboro, Minn. from October 17 through December 20.

Commissioned from memorial funds of the Hennepin
Health Foundation, painting Artist-Instructor Michele
Combs created this 24 x 48-inch oil in memory of a woman
who faithfully volunteered at Hennepin County Medical
Center (HCMC) for 40 years. She and her husband can
be seen on the bench to the left looking at Lake Harriet
where they kept their sailboat.

New in every way for sculpture Artist-Instructor John
Currie, is this recent installation at New Reflections Salon
in Minnetonka. It’s large (1 x 5 x 36-feet), contemporary,
abstract, in aluminum and copper and fabricated from
sheet and tubular metal. Usually, John works in small,
representational, bronze castings. Adding to excitement of
his first installation piece, the salon won third runner up
of 300 entries for Salon of the Year by Salon Today and
Modern Salon magazines.

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Andy Currie
Andy Currie has spent 50 years working with nonprofit
organizations, mostly in the arts. As managing partner
of Currie, Ferner, Scarpetta & DeVries LLP he served as
a consultant for the 1999 capital campaign, which funded
the Minnetonka Center for the Arts’ current facility. With
success achieved and friendships developed, it inextricably
connected him to the Art Center … making it difficult
to refuse an invitation 12 years later to join the board
of directors.
Interest in the visual arts began early in his career
as an acting director of a contemporary art museum
in Ohio. Shifting to fundraising, Andy moved to New
York to work as a consultant and later became president
and chief operating officer of C. W. Shaver & Company
Inc., a national fundraising firm with offices across the
country. With that scope, it’s notable when he asserts,
“The Minnetonka Center for the Arts is one of the
nation’s leading examples of its type, probably
among the top five art centers of its kind in the
country.”
After his first year with the board of directors, Andy
is impressed by the scale of the Art Center’s outreach
program, especially how we serve artists, providing
opportunities for them to work in the community, and reach
at-risk children with art experiences, an important aspect
of healthy child development.
“I think the Art Center does a great job at what it does,”
says Andy. “It seems to have a clear focus and it’s
recognized by area foundations for the quality of its work.”
He adds that his wife, author Ames Sheldon, has taken
classes in sculpture and watercolor painting at the Art
Center with “phenomenal” Artist-Instructors.
“Andy has been a tremendous friend of the art center and
to me, personally, for many years. His fundraising acumen
is unparalleled and he brings a wealth of knowledge and
experience to our board,” says Executive Director Roxanne
Heaton. “His counsel is invaluable as we chart the course
of this organization for the next decade.”
STAFF SPOTLIGHT Ryan Varley
Sculpture Studio Manager Ryan Varley supports the
Artist-Instructors and sculptors so that they can focus on
the art form. That includes having a technical knowledge
of the bronze casting process, providing foundry
maintenance, ordering supplies and making sure the studio
runs smoothly. Ryan held this position from 2002 to 2005
when the studio and this building were new and returned
to the Sculpture Studio this year.
“I think what we do in that studio is so extremely rare that
it would be eye-opening for many people to take a class in
sculpture,” says Ryan. “The stuff that we’re capable of doing
is pretty phenomenal.”
In addition to his role with the Art Center, Ryan teaches
art with the A.C.H.I.E.V.E. program in Osseo serving
students who have significant emotional, behavioral
and mental health issues. He provides individualized
instruction for students centering on their strengths and
helps them establish positive patterns of behavior and
decision-making.
“It’s not your traditional high school art setting,” says Ryan.
“It’s been challenging, but very rewarding. I might be
teaching painting to one student and sculpture to another
in the same class.”
Ryan does some metalwork at his home studio, but doesn’t
like being defined by any one medium. Two young sons
consume most of his time outside of work, but lately when
he does make art, he’s been painting. Inspired by his
students’ autonomous doodles and scribbles on
assignments, he creates abstracts of shape and line while
considering what they might be communicating.
“I went to grad school as a print-maker, but I was really
drawn into the physicality of making art,” says Ryan who
paints with his hands using pastels, oils, polyurethanes and
acrylic caulking to give it depth.
“As both an artist and an educator, Ryan brings
a special and valued perspective to the job, and since
he’s done the job before, he was able to jump right in
and make things happen,” says Executive Director
Roxanne Heaton. “When we hired him back in 2002,
I was very impressed by his incredible skills and quiet
confidence. I couldn’t be happier to have him back
on the staff!”

Thanks to all of our Believers!
It was a festive night at the Art Center when the Seeing is Believing Spring
Fundraiser opened the doors on June 5. With live demonstrations of stone carving,
painting and ceramics, more than 150 guests were able to glimpse the transformative
magic of art that takes place at the Art Center every day. The combined total of
ticket sales, mystery bags, raffles, auctions, sponsorships and donations raised
nearly $100,000 to support the Art Center’s ongoing work. Thank you to the Board
of Directors, sponsors, guests, donors and volunteers who so generously supported
the event! Thanks to Scott McKenzie Catering & Events for preparing delicious
appetizers and dinner for us!

Make your writing beautiful whether
addressing cards or adding poetry to your
paintings. In this class you will learn
Copperplate script, a style of calligraphy
that gets its unique look from a flexible,
pointed pen nib that allows variation in
thickness through pressure and release.
Begin by learning the lovely traditional
copperplate letter forms and then push
them into the 21st century by altering the
letter shapes to make them funky and
current. Materials included.
Beginners receive an introduction to basic
throwing techniques and forms, while
intermediate students expand their technical
abilities and their understanding of
ceramic form through demos, discussions
and critiques. High-fire, raku and soda
firing will be explored.

POTTERY IN THE MAKING
Lee Persell
Skill level: ALL
This class is for beginners and advanced
potters alike. Beginners will be introduced
to the potter’s wheel as well as handbuilding. Experienced students will work with
the instructor to develop their own work.
High-fire, raku and soda firing will be
explored.
Enrollment limited to 18; ages 15 and up
In this “off the wheel” class, students
will have fun with figurative (animal or
human), abstract or realistic forms and
learn about interior structure and proper
architecture for ceramic sculpture.
Students may pursue their own direction
with instructor support or be given step
by step guidance to complete their project.
The creative possibilities are endless!

your artist’s eye in this class that will
expand your clay vocabulary and take
your ceramic skills to the next level. You’ll
create a wide range of pieces from tabletop
wares such as cups, plates, and teapots to
large vases and planters, explore glazing
techniques to better express the line and
form of the finished piece, and as a class
share creative insights to nurture critical
thinking about pottery. All skill levels are
welcome to join.

EARTHENWARE:
BUILDING A SURFACE
Kristin Pavelka

Earthenware clay is forgiving, the “low
fire” color palette is infinite and the firings
are economical, making this genre of
pottery very creative and easily accessible!
Explore multiple ways to build up interesting
surfaces during each stage of the making
process: wet, leatherhard and bisque.
You will learn a variety of slip decorating
techniques, how terra sigillata can enhance
the surfaces and how to layer glaze to
create depth. In the last class, we discuss
the finished pots, providing good feedback
and ideas. Both wheel throwers and
hand-builders welcome. While geared to
earthenware, the techniques in this course
will benefit ceramicists working in all firing
ranges and clay varieties.

INTRODUCTION TO
WATERCOLOR PAINTING
[CORE CLASS]
WATERCOLOR STILL LIFE:
ORDINARY TO
EXTRAORDINARY
NEW!
Welcome to watercolor! This introductory
class is for anyone who wants to explore
the unique characteristics of watercolor
painting. We’ll begin with discussions and
demonstrations on selecting, preparing
and using watercolor paints, paper and
brushes. You’ll learn how to create a wash
(a very basic but essential watercolor skill)
and explore terms and techniques such
as “wet on wet,” “wet on dry” and “dry on
dry”. You’ll learn how to create a value
scale and monochromatic value study and
practice strategies for incorporating these
techniques into a painting. Color theory,
the color wheel, composition and design
elements, textures and how to incorporate
pen and ink into our paintings will also be
discussed. Materials list will be provided at
the first class.
Learn how to make an interesting painting
from everyday objects. Using still life as
our genre, this watercolor course will
focus on concepts of composition, value
and shape patterns, creating movement
in the painting, color selection, modeling
of objects and painting shadows. Students
will paint from studio set-ups, which they
will create. Request a materials list from
the Registrar.

NEGATIVE PAINTING IN
WATERCOLOR
Sandra Muzzy
Skill level: AB, I, AD
NEW!
Negative painting is a technique that
allows you to define shapes by painting
around them rather than by painting the
object itself. As with traditional watercolor
we will start light and gradually get darker
as we define the subject by painting
around it. A bit of a mind wobble at first,
this techniques allows for a great deal
of spontaneity and opportunities to add
depth and value to your painting as you
continue to hone and refine it. Bring your
usual watercolor supplies, and Arches 140
lb. cold press paper.
