2014 Barbara Lund Artist
Award Exhibit
May 28 - June 25
Murphy Room
Free and open to the public
The annual Barbara Lund Artist Award at the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts was established in 1995. It provides
a year’s worth of studio classes to a selected student
each year, enabling them to deepen their course of
study with classes in a variety of media. We thank the
Lund family for their generosity in making this unique
opportunity possible for so many Art Center students
over the years.
2014 Barbara Lund Artist Award winner Addie Motzko
will exhibit a selection of work created during her
scholarship year in the Henrietta Murphy Room,
in conjunction with the Members’ Salon Show.
Addie supplemented her studies in welded steel
sculpture with classes in drawing, abstract painting and
figurative sculpture – experiences which will help her
further develop her sculptural work in years to come.

Director’s
Note
Dear Friends,
I’m so happy to introduce our new Adult Program
Director, Mara Miller, in this issue (see Staff Member
Spotlight on Page 6). While she’s been with us since
January, we’ve given her a little time to get settled
in and meet our talented Artist-Instructors. After many
successful spring workshops, including the sold-out
Habsburgs Curator Lecture, Mara’s introducing a grand
summer session for adult learners in this issue. Summer
is the perfect time to plant yourself in a studio and grow!
Summer is always my favorite time of year at the Art
Center! I look forward to the boundless creative energy
that Summer Arts Camp brings to the facility. It adds
a little complexity to the day but for me it affirms our
mission and purpose of touching lives with art. The
building comes alive with new exhibits as well. To the
Members’ Salon, opening in May, and Faculty Show,
opening in August — two annual favorites — we add a
popular juried show, Art of the Garden, opening July 2,
for summer art inspiration! (See Exhibit Update, page 2.)
Last issue you read about the exhibit expansion at
Ridgedale Center, thanks to a NEA grant and support
from General Growth Properties. You’ll be seeing this
expansion unfold through the summer. We’d love to
hear your thoughts and impressions! All art on exhibit
is available for sale.
We have a magical night planned at the Art Center
on June 5! Have you purchased your tickets yet? After
many years of hosting a luncheon off-site, we’re very
excited to bring the Spring Fundraiser event back
to where so much learning and artistic expression
happens. Join us for Seeing is Believing, a special night
of casual, festive fun including art in action and on
display, fabulous raffle items, dinner in the Dayton
Courtyard and music throughout the evening. It’s time
to come back to the Art Center! I encourage you to host
a table and invite friends to experience our mission and
the transformative power of art in individual lives and in
the community.
If you absolutely can’t be with us on June 5, please
express your support and make a donation by phone,
mail or online at minnetonkaARTS.org, Donations.
As a member and supporter of the Minnetonka Center
for the Arts, you share in the pride of delivering quality
arts education and cultural enrichment in our
communities and throughout the Twin Cities area!
Best regards,
Roxanne L. Heaton

ABOUT THE COVERS
Images by Kiersa Notz, of Minneapolis-based
d iDee design, created for the Seeing is Believing
fundraiser invitation. Since 2012, Kiersa has provided
exceptional design services for the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts, notably the /Visually Speaking/
catalogs, invitations and postcards. It’s a treat to
feature her images on the covers of this issue!

Remembering
Pete Bastiansen
It is with sadness that we share news of
Pete Bastiansen’s passing. For many years,
he was integral to the Minnetonka Center
for the Arts as a student, instructor, exhibitor,
member, volunteer and friend. Pete taught
drawing for many years and donated
numerous drawings to the Art Center, though
he may be best known as the creator of the
Hamm’s Beer bear during his career with
Campbell Mithun. He painted the image to
the left on the wall of the old building right
before it was demolished. Another of his
iconic images was the Art! Art! Dog, which
just might make a comeback soon ... stay
tuned … a small honor to a good man and
a life well lived! We’ll miss you, Pete!
A note to adult students: We love children, but cannot allow parents to bring them along to adult classes. We
are unable to provide supervision nor assure their safety while you are in class. Please make other care arrangements.

Seeing is Believing
Art changes lives. We see it here every day.
Intangible and invisible, it’s unique to each
person and powerfully real. It’s free and
inherently part of the process, yet valuable
beyond monetary measure.
It’s the magic of art. An intrinsic quality able
to transform, reshape and renew.
Art can transform grief to hope, apathy
to engagement, sadness to joy, self-doubt
to pride in accomplishment and loneliness
to being part of a community. And more.
What’s remarkable about the Minnetonka Center for the
Arts is the scale at which this transformation occurs.
Here, local and regional artists build their practice and
their businesses with classes, workshops, exhibition and
sales opportunities both at the Art Center and at Ridgedale
Center. We directly influence the robust $1 billion arts
economy in Minnesota.
and enhanced dimensions in their lives making art.
Visitors discover art on display and art to enhance life
at home. Some experiences are more life altering than
others, but the nature of art is to change things. There’s
magic in that.
Our gallery and exhibit areas throughout the building
display nearly 5,000 pieces of artwork a year, valued well
beyond $1 million. Last year, we featured more than 60
artworks at Ridgedale Center, a number that will more
than double in the coming months. In these venues, the
Minnetonka Center for the Arts reaches more than
14 million people a year, with free, quality art exhibits.
For art buyers, the Art Center is a source of one of a kind
original art for personal enjoyment or gift giving. Every
purchase supports the Art Center as well as local and
regional artists. The annual Arts of the Holidays Show
& Sale moves thousands of items each year for more than
120 artists. In addition, the Student, Member and Faculty
Shows provide opportunities for exhibition experience and
art sales. Knowing how to professionally display and sell
art marks a successful artist and is part of the Art Center’s
culture of artist development.
“By employing local artists to be teachers, not just at the
Art Center, but to go out to the broader community, the
Minnetonka Center for the Arts is contributing to the economic
impact to our state. There is a ripple effect that goes
way beyond the Art Center,” says State Senator Terri Bonoff.
To experience what transpires within the Art Center and
beyond our walls is to believe in the power of art.
Arts education is the heart and soul of the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts and we surpass all other community
art centers in the sheer number of classes and art forms
that we exhibit and teach. More than 600 classes,
workshops and lectures are offered each year on site.
Any given day, students will be found in our sun-lit studios
working their medium. Several times a year, elementary or
high school students flood the Art Center for field trips and
hands-on art experiences not possible at their schools.
And our gallery exhibits are free and open whenever the
building is open, 50-plus hours a week.
Visitors and students come from all walks of life, ages
5 to 95+ and may have no prior experience or be seasoned
professionals. Everyone is welcome and everyone finds
something here. Within each discipline (drawing, ceramics,
fiber, glass, jewelry, painting, photography and sculpture),
classes range from beginner through advanced, with many
designed for all levels so that students may learn from one
another as they work side by side in the studio. A culture of
friendly community and support thrives at the Art Center
centered on the common joy of art making and art viewing.
The Art Center mission is not complete without community
outreach, which extends our arts education far beyond our
walls and provides art-making experiences to students
of all abilities. Often creating connections with art that
otherwise would not exist, our Artist-Instructors
transport art projects to reach children and adults with
special needs, seniors with memory loss and children of
families struggling financially. Our partner community
service organizations number more than 100 and include
Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners (IOCP),
YWCA Youth Programs, Project for Pride in Living,
St. David’s Center, Opportunity Partners, Hammer,
and Presbyterian Homes to name a few.
Art touches everyone who enters the Minnetonka Center
for the Arts, reaching each at a level often unexpected and
sometimes with surprising results. Students find new paths
Each year, the Art Center hosts a special event to raise
funds for our mission-driven work. This year we’ve planned
a fabulous night at the Art Center, where guests may see
demonstrations of artwork in action, explore the facility
and enjoy an evening of great food, friends and fun.
Please support our mission and the work that we do.
Please come see and believe!

Board of Directors

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Denise Leskinen
On a snowy winter day in 2006, Denise visited the
Art Center for first time to see a student exhibit as part of
a college assignment. “It was the match that reignited the
passion for art that I’ve always had,” says Denise. “From
the moment I stepped into the gallery and wrote the paper,
it was a four-alarm fire again!”
Inspired at a young age, Denise grew up drawing all the
time. She took every art class she could in high school and
studied art in college. Currently marketing and business
development coordinator for Minnetonka-based Learning
Strategies Corporation, Denise continues her art in
Saturday ceramics classes at the Art Center.
“Denise is an enthusiastic advocate and eager ambassador
for the Art Center,” says Executive Director Roxanne
Heaton. “Always willing to step up to help with events,
Denise is bright, capable, hard working and full of ideas.
I’m so grateful to have her on the Board.” Denise also
holds the record for most exhibit openings attended by
a board member, according to Roxanne, only missing two
in three years.
“I admire the opportunities the organization provides local
artists, whether professional or just passionate, to display
and sell their work, explore their passion and realize their
dreams no matter how big or small they are,” says Denise.
“In the classes, it’s such a rare opportunity to learn not only
from top-quality instructors but from classmates, many
of whom are working artists. It’s a wonderful, collaborative
environment.”
Highly valuable to the board of directors is Denise’s experience
in local government. Working for five years at the City of
Wayzata and six at the City of Orono, Denise currently
serves as a planning commissioner for the City of Orono.
Denise resides in Orono with her husband of 30 years
and has two grown children. She won’t hesitate to tell
you that the Minnetonka Center for the Arts is truly her
happy place!
STAFF SPOTLIGHT Mara Miller
With goals of growing program diversity and enrollments,
Mara Miller joined the Art Center staff as full-time adult
program director in January. She brings a wealth of
experience from seven years as communications and event
coordinator for the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council
(MRAC) where she developed arts management and
leadership training programs for community arts centers
and nonprofit organizations. She is eager to apply her
experience and arts-related connections to develop new
programs and partnerships for the Art Center.
“Mara brings tremendous experience and insight
to her new position! With the benefit of her leadership,
I am confident our adult program will be stronger and
more vibrant than ever,” says Executive Director Roxanne
Heaton.
Since joining the team, Mara has been working closely with
Artist-Instructors developing the summer program featured
in this catalog, including many exciting new classes and
workshops. “Truly, there is a level of quality here across the
board! I was particularly impressed by the caliber of work in
the Student Show, which I think demonstrates that not only
do we have great artists, there are great teachers here, too.”
Mara hopes to take a beginning class in each discipline
to fully experience the breadth of visual arts education the
Art Center provides and she looks forward to supporting
ideas (from students and instructors) on how programming
can grow within disciplines. Her arts background is as
a writer, specifically for children and young adults. She also
enjoys travel, cabin-camping and downhill skiing. Mara
currently serves on the Minneapolis Arts Commission.

ART FOR THE BRAIN
Nicola Demonte
Skill level: ALL
Want to learn more about how to use
the slips and glazes in the Art Center’s
ceramics studio? Want to expand the range
of your work’s color palette? This two-class
workshop will focus on how to use the
materials available in the glaze room. What
are they? When/how are they applied?
What do they work well with? You’ll make
sample tiles to try new things and record
your discoveries. Both new students, just
beginning to work with slips and glazes,
and continuing students, eager to deepen
their understanding of the glaze options
available, will enjoy this class. Materials
provided.
Have you ever wondered about the human
brain’s connection to creativity? Discover
how drawing and painting can reduce
stress and help people with disabilities
and medical conditions. Learn to use
creativity to improve wellbeing for yourself
or for loved ones challenged with various
illnesses. Topics explored include brain
science, psychology and art history.

ITALIAN MAJOLICA
WORKSHOP
NEW!
Kathy Mommsen
Skill level: ALL
Italian Majolica is a highly decorated style
of pottery appealing to both ceramic and
painting artists. Join Kathy Mommsen as
she shares skills and insights gained from
a summer of intensive study with majolica
master Marino Moretti. Learn about the
form’s medieval roots and discover new
glazing techniques that preserve brilliant
colors. You will be transported via slides
to Italy on the first day to learn about the
artistry and history of the style, and then
create the tiles and slab bowls and plates
for glazing. The second day includes
glazing technique demonstrations and
instruction on brushwork. Your Majolica
pottery pieces will be ready for pickup
three weeks after the workshop. No
experience necessary. Bring a lunch
or eat in the Art Center Café during the
half-hour break.
Earthenware clay is forgiving, the “low
fire” color palette is infinite and the firings
are economical, making this genre of
pottery very creative and easily accessible!
Explore multiple ways to build up
interesting surfaces during each stage of
the making process: wet, leatherhard and
bisque. You will learn a variety of slip
decorating techniques, how terra
sigillata can enhance the surfaces and
how to layer glaze to create depth. In
the last class, we will discuss the finished
pots, providing good feedback and ideas.
Both wheel throwers and hand-builders
welcome. While geared to earthenware,
the techniques in this course will benefit
ceramicists working in all firing ranges and
clay varieties. Materials, not included, are
available for purchase during first class.
STONEWARE AND
PORCELAIN

on independent projects, including work
with soft pastels. A wide range of drawing
approaches will be covered with plenty of
individualized guidance by the instructor.

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER:
DRAWING DOGS!
Sarah Thornton

FIBER ARTS
NEW!
Try your hand at figure drawing with an
untraditional model. Traditional figure
drawing uses the human body as
inspiration. Drawing pets (specifically
dogs) adds challenges of a model that
won’t hold poses and a form that is
unlike your own body. Using observational
drawing skills, you will learn how breed
anatomy creates and shapes the
appearance of the model. You will explore
how dogs have been historically portrayed
in art as you build skill in capturing their
form, movement and expression.
A friendly therapy dog will model.

EXPERIMENTING WITH
WATERCOLOR

NEW!
Experiment with texture! Too often people
assume there is only one way to paint
with watercolor, yet watercolor is a very
versatile medium. Explore painting on a
wide variety of papers including papyrus,
masa paper, yupo, textured aquabord and
musical scores. The end results are greatly
influenced by the textures and physical
properties of the different papers. This is a
fun way to test the boundaries of watercolor.
Bring your usual paints and brushes to
class; papers will be provided. Register for
both sessions for the best experience.

INTRODUCTION TO
WATERCOLOR PAINTING
Sandra Muzzy
Skill level: B, AB
Welcome to watercolor! This introductory
class is for anyone who wants to explore
the unique characteristics of watercolor
painting. We’ll begin with discussions and
demonstrations on basic materials including
paints and their characteristics, paper selection
and preparation, brush selection and mark
making characteristics. You’ll learn how to
create a wash (a very basic but essential
watercolor skill), different techniques and
their terms (“wet on wet,” “wet on dry”
and “dry on dry”), how to create a value
scale and monochromatic value study and
practice strategies for incorporating these
techniques into a painting. Color theory,
the color wheel, composition and design
elements, textures and how to incorporate
pen and ink into our paintings will also be
discussed. Register for both sessions to
really cement these skills. Materials list will
be provided at the first class.

Skill level: ALL
Create a life-size portrait head of your
child or grandchild in clay! You will
hand-build the portrait bust with red
earthenware clay on a provided armature.
Once the portrait is completed, you’ll
remove the head from the armature and
hollow it for firing. The drying process
takes several weeks, so fired heads will
be ready for pickup toward the end of
summer. Some tools and water spray
bottles will be available for those who
don’t have their own. Bring multiple
photographs of your subject to the first
class, including: full face, both profiles,
back of head and (very important!) threequarter views. Some firing fees may apply.
Enrollment limited to 10; ages 16 and up
This class will provide cast bronze sculpting
opportunities for all skill levels, tailored to
each student’s needs. Experienced students
will be allowed to pursue more independent
projects and advance skills at their own
pace. Beginners will be introduced to the
principles and processes of bronze casting
and sculpting and will learn the techniques
required to proceed from concept to
