March 1 Michelle Cohen Wendy Wengrow Page 3 Menorah message 3 From the Cantor From our Rabbinic Intern Didi Thomas, Cantor Danny Burkeman, Rabbinic Intern For the next two months, while Rabbi Silver is on Sabbatical, I will be assuming a number of his responsibilities, including writing a monthly article for the Menorah Message. I have been working as the Rabbinic Intern at Temple Menorah for just over four months now, and I have really enjoyed getting to know you and becoming a part of this community. When I think about Temple Menorah I always recall Yom Kippur morning and the family service in a tent in the courtyard. For those of you who don’t remember, it was raining in a way that was reminiscent of my homeland (England) rather than in California. And I suggested moving the service inside, an idea which was thoroughly rejected by those present in the congregation. As we continued, the rain eventually stopped, and behind the community I could see the Pacific Ocean as we prayed (this was nothing like being in England). I was mesmerized by the view of the sea beyond the congregation, and as we recited our prayers I felt that our praise of God had an added significance for the work of God’s hands which I was witnessing in the distance. It was the same liturgy as I have recited before, but the view of the ocean changed everything for me. Once again, it reminded me that as people we sometimes go about our lives without lifting up our eyes to see the beauty which is around us, and fail to take a moment to admire the work of God’s hands. In some ways Shabbat is a weekly reminder to take a moment out of time. Shabbat halts our regular schedule and allows us to take a day for family and friends, for rest and recuperation. A day when we can do all of those things which get lost as we rush around the rest of the week, and fail to look at the beauty around us. I am enjoying spending the Shabbatot over January and February with you at Temple Menorah, and I hope that we will be able to, in the words of Abraham Joshua Heschel, build our own palace in time once a week when we come together for Shabbat. Danny Burkeman, Rabbinic Intern nd Temple Menorah’s 2 Annual ISRAEL PILGRIMMAGE Accompanied by Rabbi Silver Departure date: June 22, 2009 A deluxe five-star tour for first-timers or veteran travelers! 3 nights in Berlin, touring key Jewish and historical sites! 14 fabulous days in Israel! I always love the secular month of February, everyone's hearts and minds are focused on love. Everywhere we turn we are greeted with colors of pink and red, while some are focused on romance and most are in a giving and loving mood. It is the closest we get to loving our neighbor as we would love ourselves... and give from our hearts freely without guile and (hopefully) without expecting anything else in return. As I said last year -- this is very much like what Shabbat is supposed to be. We show up, with our hearts open - ready to share and receive and if we are listening may actually hear the Divine within us and each other in a state of relationship and bliss. This is a very exciting time in our Reform movement. We have a new prayer book to experience the joy that is available to us on Shabbat and within our sacred texts. Our new prayer book is like a love song between God and us, with beautiful poetry waiting to dance off our lips and delight our souls... written in (yes...) English and surrounded by the beauty of our ancient Hebrew (fully transliterated) so we can all be on the same page, at the same time, fully engaged!! February 29th will be our Grand Preview! We officially inaugurate it in the Friday evening service at 6:30 p.m. prior to our Community Shabbat dinner. The choir, band and I will be entertaining and teaching new melodies to add to our familiar favorites. Please come join us! **On a special note: We are blessed to have angels within our Congregation who truly give from their hearts with pure love and generosity. Norin & Nona Grancell have graciously donated a new baby grand piano for our Sanctuary and services -- how lucky we are!!! A new prayer book, and a new piano for additional melodies to pray with... Please come join us this special Shabbat to honor the Grancells and our Choir and Band as we delight in this amazing gift of the heart!! We will then use our new prayer book for the first Saturday service on March 1st! How exciting!! We are truly a "Mishkan Tefilah" (as our prayer book is named) -- a [dwelling] place of prayer! Another chance to experience love is in giving on Michael Mitzvah Day. This year, on February 24th, come join me and the choir as we visit Senior Retirement Homes and spread love and cheer with melodies to lift the spirit and the heart. .(Broadway Show tunes and popular favorites) To receive love one has to be fully present, ready, willing and able to give selflessly; come do that with us, your Temple family! We are here to share the light, together! B'ahavah, (with love), Cantor Didi Page 4 4 Menorah Message Muse on the move From the Cantor… From the Senior Center Director ~ Choir rehearsal: Wednesdays from 7-9pm ~ Band rehearsal : Thursdays (please call Dan Spector our Musical Director for specific dates and times) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Michael Mitzvah Day – February 24th: --pm Rehearsal of music and choir --pm Visit Retirement homes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ th ~Mishkan Tefilah Grand Premier— February 29 6:00 p.m. Champagne and appetizers 6:30 p.m. Community Shabbat Service and Dinner; honoring the Grancells dedicating our new piano, and Choir & Band appreciation night. **Rabbi Silver will be back ~ please come join us!** Join us for a very special evening & Mishkan Tefilah grand preview Friday, February 29, 2008 6:00 p.m. Champagne & Appetizers 6:30 p.m. Shabbat Service 7:30 p.m. Dinner In recognition of the new piano donated by Norin & Nora Grancell in memory of their mother, Sylvia Grancell Celebrating the choir and band Introducing new melodies and the new Mishkan Tefilah prayer book! Morgan Land, Director Rosenberg Senior Center The Rosenberg Senior Center operates on Mondays and Wednesdays (11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) with a variety of activities to suit just about any interest. This month, I want to call specific attention to our Monday Film study and screenings. Each Monday I will pull a film from a collection of some of the greatest cinema ever made and give a three part lecture on each. First, we'll explore the director of each film and consider who they are and how their personal histories have informed their vision of a particular film. In our discussion of Roman Polanski's "The Pianist" for example, we explored Polanski's dual role as victim and victimizer and illuminated how a "victim" of the Holocaust dealt with his trials. Secondly, we'll look at each film in its sociological context. In our discussion of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, we explored the life of Ken Kesey (the writer of the novel) and considered how his life represented a transition from the "Beat Generation" to the "Hippie Generation." This transition in American culture not only influenced our society as a whole, but created some of the most memorable fictional characters in Kesey's novels and in film (re: Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Randall P. McMurphy.) Lastly, we'll consider the psychological/existential components of each story. As Jews, stories of all kinds help us derive meaning in our daily lives. In our film class, we'll break down each film into its moral and ethical evocations, trying to find our own personal meaning in each film. Please join us Monday mornings (before lunch for the lecture and after lunch for the screenings.) Senior Center hours are from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Please make your reservations with Andrea Witkin at (310) 316-8444 ext. 128. Andrea's office hours are 10am-3pm Monday through Friday. Upcoming films: February 4th: February 11th: February 25th: Shakespeare in Love The Lives of Others Twelve Angry Men SAVE THE DATE! Summer Spectacular Gala 2008 Saturday Evening, May 24, 2008 Nominations for Honorees are now being accepted for consideration. The welcome I have received so far has been delightful and I look forward to meeting many people in the community in the days to come. For those of you who are wondering…who is she and where did she come from…..here are the stats: I was born and raised in Santa Monica, California. I married my wonderful husband, Ron, (42 years now!) at Adat Shalom Synagogue in Los Angeles, where we still belong. Our children, their spouses and our grandchildren add joy to our lives. I went to work for B’nai Tikvah Congregation (BTC) in 1973, started teaching Mommy and Me classes around the city, and became director at BTC in 1978 after receiving my degrees from UCLA, and the Bureau of Jewish Education. Later, I became involved in the accreditation process, directing the first Jewish school in Southern California to receive national accreditation as well as being the first school nationally to receive accreditation from the Bureau of Jewish Education in Los Angeles. As part of the accreditation project, I have been fortunate enough to have gone around the world inspecting early childhood programs, looking for high quality standards. In 1997, I received a wonderful accolade by being selected as one of the 15 outstanding directors in the nation by Child Care Information Exchange Magazine. It is an honor I cherish. In addition to directing, I began teaching education classes at SMC and Loyola Marymount University in the evening , doing some director mentoring sponsored by the State of California, and serving on the Mayor’s commission that laid the groundwork for Universal Preschool and the First Five Commission. I left B’nai Tikvah in 2006 and, yes, I was there for all those years! Film Lecture: “Order in the Court of Sidney Lumet” / Chair Yoga / Film Screening and Discussion: “Twelve Angry Men” Since 2006, in addition to the Education classes, I have been training to be a docent at the Skirball. and now that my husband retired, I am looking forward to the two of us traveling, to working in my garden, reading, enjoying our time together and, of course, having a productive fun-filled time being a part of Temple Menorah/Tuvia’s staff! February 27 Please stop by the school and say “hello”. My hours will be posted. Option One: Field Trip $32.00 Private Tour of Huntington Garden’s Estate Marla Osband Private Tour of Huntington Garden’s Estate and New Chinese Gardens. Fee includes: boxed lunch, admission to Museum and Botanical Gardens, Private Tour of Estate. (*Note: Docent will be sensitive to anyone with walking limitations). Option Two: Lecture: “The Life and Times of Stanley Kubrick” / Film – Stanley Kubrick’s “Mini Film Festival” with clips from: “2001: A Space Odessey,” “A Clockwork Orange,” and “Full Metal Jacket” (normal fee) Hello my name is Andrew Czuzak and I am doing a special project for my Bar Mitzvah. I am collecting books to donate to the Toberman House’s new library. This library will let needy children read. Just think how thankful they will be when they can have a better life because of these books. There will be boxes near the office to put the books you want to donate into. Thank you! Page 6 6 Menorah Message From the director of education Randi Sher, Director of Education We have been very busy in all of our programming for our children here at Temple Menorah. Both our formal and informal educational opportunities abound and I hope you will continue to join us and support our children in their learning. Sunday February 24th is Michael Mitzvah Day. This is a wonderful opportunity to have fun with your family and friends in activities to help others! There are many choices of projects and I encourage you to attend. Tzedakah and Gemilut Chasadim are deeply rooted Jewish values and this is a perfect way to participate as a community and teach our children at the same time. CAMP MENORAH Camp was a resounding success this winter thanks to the hard work and planning of our dedicated staff. Please see the insert in this bulletin for pictures of the fun! We are busy planning for this summer now. Look for our brochure and enrollment form at the Purim carnival next month. The daily and weekly schedule has changed; there are new field trips and activities as well as many more surprises. Be sure to pick up a brochure to see the fun you will be having! TUVIA TIDBITS We are just completing our Parent/Teacher Conferences and moving into the second half of our school year. Our classes are busy, happy and learning. We have a few spots available so please call and come for a tour to see what we have to offer. Pre-registration forms for the fall went out last month and are coming back quickly. Please turn your form in as soon as possible to assure your child’s space and help us to properly budget and staff for the future. Tuvia will be closed two days during the month of February. On Monday February 18th both the school and synagogue will be closed in observance of President’s Day. On Tuesday February 26th Tuvia will be closed so that all of our teachers can attend the Bureau of Jewish Education In-Service Day. This is a wonderful opportunity for our faculty to continue their own learning and bring new ideas and projects to your children. This month’s Tot Shabbat service and program is on February 1st, and our theme is Havdallah. Next month we will meet on March 7th for a pre-Purim celebration. Students who attend frequently will earn larger prizes like kippot and t-shirts later in the year.
