The engaging lively group warmed us up on a cold gloomy March day! There were no guests today due to the Easter Holiday week. Announcements included a reminder to all Rotarians and the community regarding the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday. There will be a Rotary social gathering at the Le Roy Country Club on April 21st at 5:30. Rotarians are encouraged to bring a prospective member to the event. Plans are underway to have regular Happy Hour events! Graze to Raise tickets are available from Samantha Vagg and members are encouraged to sell them to individuals who will attend the event. Graze to Raise will be held at Mercy Grove on May 20th. There will be a Graze meeting in the next few weeks, keep your eyes open for an email from Sam. The United Way Day of Caring is May 18th at 8 am. People will meet at Dwyer Stadium to complete projects for non-profits. There will be a wrap up celebration following. The Relay for Life Kick off Bowling Party is April 9th from 12 to 4 at the Viking Valhala in Bergen. $10 will get you two games, shoes, a slice of pizza and a beverage. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Contact Mary Young if you are interested. David Grayson encourages members to visit our website. It has been upgraded to include new information for prospective members and current members should update their information. Go to www.leroyrotary.org. Bob Boyce was presented a check for the Le Roy Ambulance. Bob spoke passionately about the need for continued financial support for this essential service. Tom Cox, Jim Ellison, David Grayson, Tom Moag, Randy Vink, Carol Wolfe, Erik Fix and Mary Young were all fined for missed meetings. Anil Sawhney was fined for the honor of being a Life Member of the American Dental Association. Anil called on the services of a past president to fine President Tony for giving away bags from a recent Florida trip. The program today was presented by Martha Bailey. Martha spoke about the significance of our major fund raising events. She emphasized the importance of all Rotary members becoming actively involved in our fundraisers in order to continue to finance the tremendous work we do in the community and nation-wide. Rotary sponsors two major fundraisers, the Appliance Raffle, which funds the Club for the year, and the Graze to Raise which funds the Milne Scholarships. The other events we host, and there are many, emphasize community awareness and fellowship. There was a lively discussion about the importance of communicating with people regarding the significance of our programs and how our community benefits from Rotary events. Please like the Rotary Club of Le Roy on Facebook. Cox Superintendent of Schools The past few weeks have been very busy at the district. On Wednesday, March 23rd, we held the bid opening for the RITE Project. The following contracts were awarded: Site work: Villager Construction, Inc. General Trades: D’Agostino General Contractors, Inc. HVAC: Bell Mechanical Contractors, Inc. Plumbing: T. Bell Construction Corp. Electrical: Blackmon-Farrell Electric, Inc. Much of the construction work will begin in May and will conclude by December. On Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium, there will be a community meeting to update anyone interested on the plans and impacts of the project. Several important changes at the Wolcott Street School will be discussed. We hope you can attend. We have also been putting the final touches on the 2016-2017 School Budget, however, we are still awaiting on crucial information anticipated on April 1st when the Governor releases the State Budget. We do anticipate some increases to the School Budget primarily due to increases in operating and contractual commitments. I will have a more detailed outline of the budget in the next few weeks. As a reminder, the budget hearing is scheduled for May 10th and the vote will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Speaking of the budget vote, this year we will have a few changes. The first is that this year we will be using paper ballots. As you may know the law has discontinued the use of lever machines, thereby making municipalities use either the optical scanning machines or paper ballots. Unfortunately, we were not able to rent these machines this year, so we will be using paper ballots. The second change is in regards to the time of the vote. Voting hours will be adjusted to allow time to manually count the ballots. Voting hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Voting will occur in the usual location, however, it will be located inside the Trigon Gym as opposed to the hallway corridor. There will be several reminders of these changes before the vote. The annual bus purchase vote was held on Tuesday, March 29th. Thank you for your approval and support as we maintain our transportation department. Finally, I would like to congratulate the Le Roy Central School District Music Department, and the entire community, for being named to the “America’s Best Communities for Music Education.” It takes a dedicated team of teachers, talented students, and community support to have this designation year after year! Thanks for all your support in this great accomplishment. As you can see, never a dull moment. More to come soon! PUBLIC NOTICE Rotary Community Funding Requests DEADLINE APPROACHING The deadline for Rotary community funding requests has been extended. All requests for the 2016-17 Rotary year must be submitted by April 15, 2016 using the form provided on the LeRoy Rotary website. http://www.leroyrotary.org/community-requests.html Even if your organization has been funded in the past, a new request must be submitted for each year Club of LeRoy that funding is requested. LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - APRIL 3, 2016 Genesee Co. Dances for Adults With Developmental Disabilities Gearing Back Genesee County Dances for Adults with Developmental Disabilities started back in 2002 as part of an internship project by Pat Iamon a student at SUNY Brockport. This “one-time” event, with the help of many, many dedicated volunteers has been sponsored by Byron Ladies Auxiliary and has been held at the Byron Fire Hall for the past 12 years. The dances were held monthly from September through May up until last year when dances were cut back from nine to three. All of the dances were well-attended, themed and provided much-needed community based fun for all of Genesee County’s adults with developmental disabilities living at home, in group We Do homes or in facilities. “Circumstances have changed for us and sadly it’s time that we cut back on the dances to one per year. Our volunteers are mostly retired and some of us head south for most of the winter; so rather than stop the dances all together, we decided to cut back to one great dance per year,” said Iamon, dance coordinator. She plans to make the announcement at the next dance; the PJ Dance on Thursday, May 12th at the Byron Fire Hall from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm. As always the dances are open to all individuals with developmental disabilities ages 13 and up living in Genesee County. Anyone wanting more information on the dances can call Pat Iamon 2452918 or Laura Platt 548-2245. Main & Church Streets) LeRoy, NY LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - APRIL 3, 2016 The Sixtieth Anniversary by Lynne Belluscio When I first came to the Historical Society, Jell-O was part of General Foods. The archives was based in White Plains, New York. Then in 1985, General Foods was acquired by Philip Morris and three years later, in December 1988, Philip Morris acquired Kraft, Inc. In 1990, Kraft and General Foods were combined as Kraft General Foods. By this time, the archives had been moved to Morton Grove, near Chicago. In 1995, “General Foods” was dropped from the name (and now can only be found on the coffee-based beverage, General Foods International Coffee.) In 2015, Kraft was acquired by Heinz and it was announced that there were to be many layoffs and the headquarters were moving to downtown Chicago as a way to save money. And it seems that the archives is once again moving – but I haven’t been able to find out where. The archivist that I knew is no longer with the company. A couple of weeks ago, I was contacted by Susan Ginter Watson, Manager, Archives and Information Services of Heinz. She emailed to say that she was sending us a 1957 notebook of things from the 60th Anniversary of Jell-O that they would not be moving to their new archive. I did tell her that if she had anything else from Jell-O that they didn’t want, to contact us, but I haven’t heard anything and probably won’t. The notebook arrived by UPS and interestingly, tucked into a front pocket is the note “File Copy – Please return to Public Relations Library General Foods Corp. White Plains NY.” There is also a letter dated August 30, 1957 from William MacFarlane explaining that the national publicity on the 60th Anniversary of Jell-O reached more than 5 million readers including The New York Times (557, 224 readers), the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle ( 297,660 readers), the New York Journal-American (724,729 readers ) and the New York Daily News (2,156,137 readers). Inside the notebook are 52 pages of photographs, newspaper clippings, press releases and letters. Many of the things are new to us. There is a copy of a letter from Governor Averell Harriman to Mr. Pridgeon, Manager of the Jell-O plant on North Street, saying that he would not be able to attend the ceremonies. There is a copy of the Congressional Record of June 21, 1957 – “Hon. Harold Ostertag of New York in the House of Representatives – Jell-O Division of General Foods Corp is observing this week the 60th Anniversary of the birth of Jell-O in LeRoy. Jell-O has been an asset to LeRoy all down through the years in its employment of those desiring it and in its interest in making LeRoy a good community in which to abide, rear children and enjoy life.” There were some other “Items of Interest” from 1957: - More than 1,000,000, packages of Jell-O are produced daily. - Jell-O now sells for 1 ½ cents less than it did 60 years ago. - This plant now turns out more Jell-O in one year than it did in its first 14 years of operation. - May Wait, who coined the trade name “Jell-O,” died last year in the Town of LeRoy. The notes on production at the LeRoy plant include: - The plant has another function – It is a printing plant. It supplies itself and other Jell-O plants with product cartons in the amount of millions a day - all turned out on three printing presses. - This plant consumes around 185,000 pounds of sugar in 15 ½ hours of full operation. This is twice the amount of sugar used daily by all of the families in Rochester. - The sugar is mixed with other ingredients, such as gelatin, starch, colors, and flavors in a battery of stainless steel mixers. Each mixer can hold enough for 10,000 individual servings. - The mixing process takes little more than five minutes per batch. Each batch is then quality tested before being released for the packing bin over the packaging machines. - Several types of machines are used for package filling, the fastest being the Hoeller, which can turn out 85 packages per minute. - The plant’s 450 employees operate in two full shifts and one clean-up shift. In 1964, seven years after the - Other Jell-O plants were located in San, Leandro, California; 60th Anniversary, Jell-O moved Hoboken, New Jersey; Chicago, to Dover, Delaware, never to set Illinois and Cobourg, Ontario, foot in LeRoy again.
