LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 4, 2015
Last week, the local committee
for the America’s Best Community project met with Rob Camoin
and Alyson Slack who are putting
together our economic revitalization plan that will be submitted
to the ABC judges in November.
Alyson and Rob have interviewed
a variety of folks from Bergen and
LeRoy. With their research, they
are compiling a very detailed look
at our economic future.
Alyson is well equipped to
work on our project. Since moving to Upstate New York in 2010,
Alyson has been immersed in
the topic of technology-led economic revitalization, and during
her tenure at the Albany-based
Center for Economic Growth
managed projects and researched
issue areas relating to business
attraction, workforce pipelines,
infrastructure, the “creative economy,” and challenges faced by
local governments.
Alyson has strategic planning
experience on both an organizational and regional level. She
provided significant staff support
to New York Governor Andrew
Cuomo’s Capital Region Economic Development Council in
the areas of research, public outreach, strategic planning, global
trade and investment promotion,
and New York’s Cleaner Greener Communities sustainability
planning process. Those experiences have left her with a strong
understanding of the conditions
that have made the region known
for its nanotechnology clusterand innovation-based economic
growth model.
Alyson’s other contributions
to Camoin Associates stem from
her strong communications background; a successful track record
in authoring successful state,
federal, international, and private
foundation grant proposals; and
staying current with national
macroeconomic conditions, economic development trends, and
New York State economic policy
in particular.

Prior to joining Camoin Associates, Alyson was responsible
for special projects at the Center
for Economic Growth, and has
also been an economic development consultant to local governments and other entities. She
began her career as a researcher
at the Center for Strategic &
International Studies in Washington, D.C., and has worked as a
freelance editor, grant writer, and
speaker on international affairs.
Alyson has a master’s degree in
International Economic Policy
from American University and
speaks Mandarin Chinese.

LeRoy Interact Celebrates
5 Year Anniversary
On September 25th, The LeRoy
Central School Rotary Interact
Club met for the first time this
year. This year marks the 5th
anniversary of the program at
LeRoy Central School.
Approximately 30 students regularly participate in the program.
The students, along with Superintendent Kim Cox, Advisor Sam
Vagg, and Health teacher, Sarah
Horgan began planning fun, safe,
and inexpensive community
service projects & events for this
school year.
In previous years, the club has
hosted festivals, assemblies, and
roller skating parties. The club
has also raised funds & products
for many organizations, including
Honor Flight, American Cancer
Society, and other local charities.
The first event of the year
scheduled is Fall Fest, which
will take place on October 18th
from 2-4 pm at Wolcott School
Gymnasium.
Interact is open for all students
in grades 7-12, and all meetings
& projects count towards community service hours. Please

Notes
The beginning of the fall season was a wonderful day for a
Rotary lunch, meeting and fellowship. The meeting began with the
Pledge of Allegiance, Prayer and
the Rotary Four-Way Test.
Larry Boylan was honored for
his birthday with a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday or was
it Home On The Range? Martha
Bailey was thanked for 10 years
of service to Rotary as well as
Carol Wolf for 17 years.
Several announcements were
made: October 18th is the Eastern
Cities dinner for all Rotarians in
the area. Also, that day from 2-4
the Interact Fall Festival will be
held in Trigon Park. So come on
out and sponsor these students.
The Appliance Raffle is Sunday, Nov. 1st. What a fun afternoon that is to support LeRoy
Rotary. Tickets are available
from any Rotarian.
The nominating committee
is working for the 2016-2017
Rotary year.
Our program today was presented by three guests from the
Jr.-Sr. High School.
Mr. Tim McArdle, Principal,
thanked Rotary for inviting
members of the Senior class to
lunch during the year. He mentioned some of the in-school
activities to be held this year and
held a football trivia game for
Rotarians. Winners were Sam,
Ron & Christine.
Mr. Brian Herdlien, Varsity
football coach, talked about the
up-coming football games. He
was also very thankful for a
supportive community and many
volunteers.
Mrs. Lynda Lowe Jr-Sr. High
School Vice Principal spoke on the
students community service day.
Entitled “Class-Up the Community” it will be held on
Wednesday, October 28th. All
students in grades 7-12 will be
involved. Groups of 10 students
and their teacher will go out into
the community to give back.
Any non-profit organization or
Senior Citizen, who needs some
assistance in yard work or other
projects, may phone Lynda at
768-8131. What a great way
for our young people to become
committed to caring for others.
The guests were thanked for
their time with a certificate noting
a donation to the RI Polioplus
Program from LeRoy Rotary.

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 4, 2015
Notes From The Mayor's Office
by Greg “Porp” Rogers,
Mayor
Congratulations to Bill Fox, Sr.
who was selected as this year’s
“LeRoyan of the Year.” The annual award is given by the American
Legion Botts Fiorito Post 576.
Bill joins an esteemed list of others who have given unselfishly to
our community.
The Village Board met with the
Sewer Board at the Wastewater
Treatment Facility to go over
changes made and to develop a
future plan for that facility. Many
plans were put into motion, the
first is submitting for grants. Upgrades and financing were also on
the table with the end result being,
that we are trying to continue
operations as close to the same
cost as before, I will keep you in
the loop of any progress.
You may have noticed, the gate
across the alley from Main Street
to Bacon Street has been closed.
The Board is trying to decide how
to proceed; there are questions
that need to be answered as to the
ownership of the walls. If you see
the gate open please stay away
from the walls.
The next project to hit a snag
is our Main Street Sidewalk
Project; our initial estimate to do
the project was extremely lower
than what we could actually get
the work done for. So it is back to
the drawing board for this.
Leaf season is right around the
corner, and the above average
temperatures will probably put
that behind schedule as well.
On a brighter note, October 7th
is National Walk to School Day.
As a child of the 60’s and 70’s
this was part of the fun of going
to school. Please make an attempt
to join in, I had hoped to be there,
but have work obligations that
have to be met, but enjoy the day.
In honor of one of the most
quoted men in history.

watching.” Yogi Berra

six school years. This year, 70
students are taking part in the

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 4, 2015
by Lynne Belluscio
We’re making some changes
at the Jell-O Gallery, and for two
weeks, I’ve been arranging the
new “mold” exhibit. It’s been a
little frustrating, because the wall
is made from a laminate and I’ve
tried drilling holes and the drill
just doesn’t want to go in. And
so I’ve been using a nail and it’s
like trying to pound a nail into
a counter top! I still have a few
more molds to go into this exhibit,
and eventually there will be more
than 100 on this wall. I’ve always
wanted to put this mold exhibit
together, ever since I saw the
photographs of the “Jell-O Mold
building” in Seattle.
The building was built in 1908
and in 1992, artist Diane Sukovathy added 400 Jell-O molds to
the outside. The building stood
on the corner of Western Avenue
and Wall Street and was declared
historically significant but unfortunately it was torn down in
1997 – the same year we opened
the Jell-O Gallery. The molds,
supposedly were put into storage,
and I haven’t been able to verify
that. But I just loved the look of
the building with all the molds.
All the molds on the wall are
metal. Some are copper, others
are tinned lined copper. There
are aluminum molds and copper
colored aluminum molds. Some
of the molds are soldered tin.
It’s pretty obvious, that some
of the molds were used only for
decoration and were never used.
One of my favorite molds is a
tin soldered design of asparagus
clusters in a circle. I have never
used the mold, but I think you
would take short spears of asparagus and “tie” them with a strip of
pimento, place them in the mold
and then pour in a savory gelatin
or aspic.
One of the melon molds could
be used for a dessert that I have
made. First you fill the mold with
green lime Jell-O and let is set
until firm. Then you scoop out
the inside and fill it with cooled
watermelon flavored Jell-O and
when it has set, you punch raisins into the watermelon Jell-O.
When you cut slices of this Jell-O
and place it on a white plate, it
looks like a slice of watermelon.
In 1997, when we opened the
A Mold For Every Occasion
Jell-O Gallery, we had our annual
Dinner Auction at LeRoy House
and we used a couple of these
molds to make centerpieces. I
added only enough hot water
to dissolve the Jell-O and then
filled the molds. When I turned
out the Jell-O is was quite hard.
You could pick up the Jell-O
and put it on a different plate
and some of them lasted three
months before we had to throw
them away. We never ate any of
them. I suspect they would have
been pretty chewy,
Making a molded Jell-O can
be tricky. First the mold has to
be greased so the Jell-O will release. A spray salad oil is handy,
but if you over spray, it can get a
little messy. It is advisable not to
use as much water in the recipe
for a molded Jell-O. Also, fresh
pineapple or kiwi should not be
used, or the gelatin will not gel.
Enzymes in these fruits prevent
the gelatin molecules from trapping the water molecules.
When it is time to unmold the
Jell-O, dip the mold in warm
water - - not hot. Then use a sharp
knife to go around the edge of the
mold. Then wipe the mold of any
water and place the plate on top
of the mold and invert everything
together. At this point, I usually
discover that I have not centered
the Jell-O on the plate, and try to
reposition it. And then when the
mold is lifted, it is the moment of
truth. Will the Jell-O stay together
or will it split or break apart.
When I was in New York City
for an appearance on morning
television for the opening of the
Jell-O Gallery, I remember that
they were going to demonstrate
unmolding an American flag
mold. The food technicians had
ten molds ready, just in case
there were problems. I remember
thinking, that means that when we
make a molded Jell-O it makes
sense to make several, just in case
the first ones don’t work.
One of my favorite paintings
in the Jell-O Gallery, shows a
woman unmolding a Jell-O and
it’s caption is “Look, how simple
and easy.” I think it should be
“the moment of truth!”
We are still looking for unusual
molds to put on the wall, so when
you are out at a garage sale, or
cleaning out your mother-inlaw’s pantry, keep us in mind.
The mold just might become part
of the exhibit!

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 4, 2015
Superintendent ’s Column
by Kim Cox,
Le Roy School Superintendent
October is here and fall is in
full swing. This past week I attended the New York State Council of School Superintendents’
Conference in Saratoga Springs
where I had a chance to hear the
new commissioner of education,
Mary Ellen Elia, speak. She has
spent much of her first 35 days
of service traveling the state
to meet with teachers, parents,
school leaders, and, most importantly, students. She is hoping her
“listening tour” will help shape
the direction of her leadership
moving forward.
During this conference, she
made it clear that she has made
three issues her top priorities;
the common core standards, the
assessments, and the annual professional performance review.
It’s no secret that these topics
have been crucial issues for all
districts, including Le Roy, for the
past several years and Ms. Elia’s
main goal is to help everyone understand the importance of raising
standards for our students. However, she completely understands
how poorly executed the roll out
of the common core standards was
and how that has caused damage
to the confidence of the both the
education field and our communities. She vows to work to put the
past in the past and move forward
in a positive way.
I know that we all agree that
the children of New York deserve
to have a high quality education
and they have the right to know
that they are prepared for college
and careers post high school. Ms.
Elia plans on taking a hard look at
the standards to ensure that they
are aligned and developmentally
appropriate. I think her message
resonated with our community
needs here in Le Roy. Hopefully,
during her tenure, Ms. Elia will
usher in an era where school
district leadership, teachers, and
communities work together with
state education regulations to
ensure that we meet the unique
needs of our communities and
provide our students the high
quality education they deserve.
So what does this mean for
Le Roy Central School District?
I am proud to say that our staff
has worked tirelessly to implement higher standards for all our
students. Our dedicated staff have
devoted a great deal of time and
effort developing a culture that
has the capacity to support our
students on their journey towards
success. Next week, our staff
development institute entitled,
Inspire, Innovate, and Implement, will allow us to continue
this important work.
Just a reminder, our Walk to
School Day is scheduled for
Wednesday, October 7, 2015.
Please plan on joining us at the
Knights of Columbus at 8:15 am
on Wednesday and walk to school
with us. Hope to see you there!

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 4, 2015
Le Roy Youth Football Seniors - LeRoy 0 - Avon 6
In a very hard fought game
the Le Roy Senior Knights lost
to Avon Braves 6 to 0. Avon
started the game on offense.
Le Roy defenders Tyler Strollo
and Brock Flint combined for
a huge tackle for a loss forcing
an eventual turnover on downs.
The Knights took over on offense and some costly holding
penalties combined with good
Avon defensive play forced the
Knights to turn the ball over on
downs. Avon would take over
and once again the Knights defense held tight, allowing only
1 yard of offense. The Knights
started with the ball on the Avon
37 yard line. This time the Le
Roy offense would get the ball
moving. After several carries up
the middle the Knights got a first
down. On the next play Brock
Flint took the handoff and fought
hard for a 22 yard carry. Le Roy
QB John Panepento used the hard
count to draw the Braves offsides
giving the Knights the ball on the
Avon 5 yard line. On third down,
Adam Risewick took the pitch
and got around the outside edge
but the Avon defense was able to
stop him at the one yard line. On
fourth down the Braves defense
stood strong keeping the Knights
from scoring. The half ended Le
Roy 0 Avon 0.
In the second half Le Roy
received the opening kickoff and
the offense took the field. Le Roy
began the drive with several carries for short yardage leading to a
first down. Two plays later Adam
Risewick took the handoff to the
left side of the offense, and then
cut back across the field racing
around the right end for a 48 yard
TD. The touchdown would be
called back on a block in the back
on Le Roy. On the very next play
Le Roy would get a personal foul
penalty pushing the Knights back
an additional 15 yards. Le Roy
reset and started the drive over.
John Panepento raced around the
right end for a 10 yard gain. On
the next play Adam Risewick
ran for 10 yards. Brady Fix then
added a 10 yard run, followed by
Risewick with an 8 yard carry.
The Knights were driving down
the field but the Braves defense
stood strong at the Avon 5 yard
line and the Knights were unable
to score. Avon would take over
and on their own 5 yard line
to start the fourth quarter. The
Braves would put together a nice
drive, marching down the field on
the Knights while chewing up the
clock. Eventually the Braves running back was able to get though
the Le Roy linebackers and raced
down to the one yard line, where
Adam Risewick caught him from
behind and forced a fumble. The
ball would roll into the end zone
and was recovered by the Braves
for the only touchdown of the
game. The Knights defense held
strong and stopped the Braves 2
point conversion attempt.
The Braves would then attempt
and recover an onside kick with
3 minutes left in the game. The
Le Roy defense fought hard and
on a 4th and 11 Antonio Martinez
made a great tackle to stop the
Braves and give the ball back
to Le Roy on their own 45 yard
line. On first down the Knights
went to the passing game, John
Panepento hit Adam Risewick for
a quick 22 yard gain. On the next
play Risewick would take the ball
around the left end for a gain of
8. Two plays later Le Roy would
fumble and the Braves took over
on downs sealing the victory.
Offensively for Le Roy Adam
Risewick led the way with 8
rushes for 90 yards and 22 yards
receiving. Brady Fix had 6 carries
for 22 yards, Zach Vanderhoof 5
carries for 12 yards, Brock Flint
5 carries for 23 yards, and John
Panepento had 4 carries for 15
yards and threw for 22 yards.
Defensively Zach Vanderhoof
led the way with 8 tackles. Corey Wallace recorded 6 tackles,
Adam Risewick 5, Brett Babcock
3. Also getting tackles for the
Knights were Tyler Strollo, Brock
Flint, Jackson Locke, Ethan
Howe, John Panepento, Ryan
Higgins, Wyatt Calcote, Landen
Saeva, Ben Robinson, and Antonio Martinez.
LeRoy Junior Football - LeRoy 32 - Avon 0
The LeRoy Junior Knights
continued their dominating start
to the season, running their record
to 4-0 after a 32-0 victory over the
Avon Braves at Hartwood Park.
LeRoy began the game on
defense and was stout from the
beginning. After a tackle for
loss by Jack Egeling, Avon punted away after 3 plays. Drew
Strollo received the punt, started
right, reversed field and made
a dazzling return of 45 yards to
give the Knights excellent field
position. Only a few plays later,
Strollo crossed the goal line with
a 6 yard run to give the Knights
an early 6-0 lead.
LeRoy would force another quick punt, however Avon
recovered a fumble to regain
possession. LeRoy’s defense
would give up a first down on
Avon’s next play, however would
eventually force a turnover on
downs. The offense would take
the field behind their field general,
quarterback Tommy Condidorio.
Condidorio kept the defenders
off balance all afternoon, with
deceiving ball fakes and fancy
footwork. On their second drive,
the Knights would score again,
this time behind the brute force of
fullback Tony Piazza on a 16 yard
touchdown. Rewarding one of his
linemen, Condidorio would hand
off to Aiden “the voice” Davis,
who promptly scampered into the
end zone to tack on the 2-point
conversion.
Avon would take the field for
their 3rd offensive possession,
and for them the results could not
have been worse. On first down,
a blitzing Drew Strollo flew into
the backfield, wrestled the ball
away from the quarterback, and
raced 35 yards down the field
for a defensive touchdown. The
play left the Avon team and crowd
dazed and confused, as seemingly
within the blink of an eye the
Knights were up 20-0.
The Knights defense forced
another quick 3 and out. Running backs Connor Hegeman and
Xavien Walker would lead the
Knights down the field. Eventually Walker scampered into the
end zone for a 10 yard touchdown,
the first of his promising career.
The defense stood tall again as
Avon attempted several passes
at the end of the half, only to be
thwarted by excellent team de-
fense lead by a de-cleating hit by
Adrian Stephens.
With the second half starting
with a score of 26-0 LeRoy, the
offense took the field. Quarterbacks Alex Spezzano and Jake
Higgins led a ball control attack
on a 13 play drive that chewed up
the majority of the 3rd quarter.
Eventually Avon forced a turnover on downs, but they could not
capitalize as LeRoy did the same.
The next offensive series resulted
in another score for the Knights,
as the speedy Jackson Fix ran in
for a 24 yard touchdown to extend
the lead to 32-0. The fourth quarter featured good defense by both
squads, with the game ending
with a LeRoy victory 32-0.
The Knights defense was suffocating with 19 different players
making tackles. Drew Strollo
led the hit parade with 8 tackles,
including a fumble recovery for a
TD. Connor Hegeman had 5 tackles including 2 for loss and Xavien Walker added 4. Zach Tooley
contributed with 3 tackles as did
Hunter Beverly. With 2 tackles
each were Adam Woodworth,
Luke Lathan, Xavier King, Tony
Piazza, and Tommy Condidorio.
Other LeRoy defenders with tackles included Jack Egeling, Jake
Higgins, Zach Samis, Jackson
Fix, Aiden Davis, Holden Sullivan, DJ O’Geen, Wyatt Draper,
and Jude Sherman.
Offensively, 13 Knights carried the ball in a very balanced
attack. Scoring touchdowns for
the Knights were Jackson Fix (53
yards rushing), Tony Piazza (39
yards rushing), Drew Strollo (48
yards rushing, 45 return yards),
and Xavien Walker (28 yards
rushing). Connor Hegeman added 12 yards, while Adam Woodworth added 14 and Jake Higgins
added 11. Also gaining yards
for the Knights were Tommy
Condidorio, Jude Sherman, Alex
Spezzano, Luke Lathan, Aaric
Luce, and Aiden Davis.
The 4-0 Junior Knights next
match up with rival Cal-Mum,
who also boasts a 4-0 record. The
pivotal CYFL Northern Division
game is set for a noon start on
Sunday October 4th in Caledonia.
Please consider taking the short
ride down Route 5 to support this
group of boys as they represent
