Rotary Notes - 10/29/14
It was a packed house when
President Randy rang the bell
to start the meeting. Our guests
included three Le Roy Seniors;
Gunther Boyd, Cameron Kleist
and Scott Evans. Also joining us
were Fred Reed, Ray Moore and
Patricia Navas.
Today was a special day as we
celebrated President Randy’s
birthday as well as fellow Rotarians Scott McCumiskey, June
Dusen and Bruce Baker. The
group showed our fond appreciation for our birthday friends with
undoubtedly the best rendition of
“Home on the Range” we have
ever performed.
We took time for a few announcements including The
Rotary Club of Perry would like
to announce their Annual Variety
Show on November 10th and
11th, and November 21st is the
Annual Rotary Foundation Celebration at Slavatore’s.
President Randy then welcomed back those Rotarians that
have been absent recently including Jerry McCullough who was
away for three weeks, Tim Moag
joined us after 2 weeks absent
and we were all happy to see
Dave Grayson, Lynne Freeman,
Tamara Torrey (who brought him
a Grow Your Own Palm Tree as
memento of warmer weather),
Bruce Baker, June Dusen and
Martha Baily join us again after
one week away.
Our Fining session started
with a recognition of Bruce
Baker’s 51st Anniversary as
a Rotarian, Next Carol Wolfe
was fined and recognized for
a very generous donation to
Le Roy Central School to help
pay for shoes and winter boots
for families in need as well as
her starring role in the recent
all-female production of the Odd
Couple. Jerry McCullough paid
for a brief commercial for Ryan
Heating and Plumbing’s Green
Energy Services while Bob Bennett was fined for RSVP’ing to
a Rotary event and not showing
up. Finally, Lynne Belluscio
was fined for current picture
and write up that appeared in a
recent article about her role as
LeRotar y
Notes
the Jell-O Museum Curator.
Bob Boyce was then honored
by Justin Smith and Joe Forsythe
from the Jerome Foundation as
this year’s winner of the Health
and Humanitarian Award. He is
the Award’s 30th recipient and
was recognized for all of the dedication and support he’s given the
foundation over the years.
We had one more surprise honor for one of our guests before the
program began. Patricia Navas
as well as the late Robert Brightenfield were recognized as Paul
Harris Fellows, one of Rotary’s
highest honors. Patricia and Robert have experienced and lived the
ideals of Rotary for many years,
supporting many of our programs
and making generous donations
to the Rotary Foundation and out
R.E.A Milne Scholarship Fund.
Patricia also supports the local
Historical Society. As Lynne
Bellucio presented the award she
made sure we were all aware that
Patricia is truly one of our community’s unsung heroes.
died, he was deemed not fit for
heaven, and not allowed in hell,
so he was sent to roam the earth
with nothing but a burning coal
to light his way. He carried the
coal inside a hollowed out turnip,
which people then began to carve
as well as a way to ward off the
wandering spirit know known as
Jack-O-Lantern.
Carol closed the program with
a quick trivia session where winners won pieces of candy hurled
from the podium, there were no
injuries to report.

In the spirit of the season, Carol
Wolfe then presented the day’s
program, a few interesting facts
of the origins of Halloween. We
learned that Halloween has its
earliest origins in Ireland from
the ancient Celts that practiced
Samhain, a festival for the dead.
They would dress in costumes
and leave treats at their doors
to appease the roaming spirits.
Jack-O-Lanterns were originally
carved from turnips, beets and
potatoes rather than our familiar
pumpkins. The tradition comes
from the Irish Folk tale of Stingy
Jack and how he tricked the Devil
twice into sparing his soul from
hell. Once Stingy Jack finally

of turmoil, grief, hunger and sickness, there is one day in
America called Thanksgiving. When everyone, even if it is hard
for some people, can always find something to be thankful for,
even if all you can do is some small thing for someone else
each day. Be thankful, you can.
On Thanksgiving Day,
if you are alone or would like a

arrange it.

President Bob Bennett called the meeting
to order at 5:34 pm on November 3, 2014
at The Greens of LeRoy. After a review of
last month’s minutes, a motion was made
to accept the minutes from Frank Davis,
seconded by Jim Nielson, and carried. Bob
Bennett gave the Treasure’s Report, motion
by Jim Nielson to accept, seconded by Greg
Rogers, and carried.
Announcements included a Save the
Date for The Annual Chamber Awards at
The Clarion in Batavia on 2/28/2015, and
the deadline for nominee application is
November 7th, 2014.
Kim Cox and Brian Fuller then gave a
presentation on the capital improvement
plan known as, “The R.I.T.E Project”. The
R.I.T.E. Project has been many years in the
making, and LeRoy Central School Board
of Education thinks right now is the time
to move forward. Kim Cox gave a detailed
overview of the proposed renovations and
upgrades to the Wolcott Street School,
LeRoy Jr./Sr. High School, Bus Garage,
and Hartwood Park. The total project has
a $12.7 million projected cost, with no additional increase in our residents’ taxes due
to this project. Kim Cox and Brian Fuller
were very clear, that they cannot guarantee
there will not be an increase in our taxes in
the coming years, but it will not be due to
this project. The best part is that all students
will benefit from the many aspects of the
project. If you are interested in learning
more about this exciting project you can go
to: http://www.leroycsd.org/, or attend the
Public Hearing on November 10, 2014 in
the Memorial Auditorium. The Public Vote
will be on December 3rd from 7 am-9 pm,
in The Wolcott Street Gymnasium Corridor.
Bob Bennett is looking for a volunteer
to head up the Welcome Wagon for the
Business Council. Jim DeLooze reminded
the group of “Fall for LeRoy” on November
7th. Bob Bennett formed a committee for
The First Night Raffle, and there will be
more information to come. The Women of
the Moose will be having a Ham & Turkey
Raffle on 11/8/2014. Lucie Griffis informed
us that Winterfest will be on December 6th.
For every $10 spent at local business until
December 6th, you will receive one entry for
prizes at Winterfest, so save your receipts.
The Business Council also voted to give a
$250 donation to help offset the costs. The
motion was made by Kim Pasquale, seconded by Jim Nielson, and carried.
Jack Hempfling informed the group that
The LeRoy Business Council Website is
moving forward. Jack also asked for suggestion for the home page on what might attract
business or families to move here.
David Paddock gave an update from the
Town. David said the main issue at the Public
Hearing was the LeRoy Ambulance. Steven
Barbeau and David Paddock both requested
that The LeRoy Business Council sponsor a
community education forum on the future
of the ambulance early next year. Bill Kettle
made a motion that The Business Council
sponsor an education forum, Jim Nielson
seconded, motion carried. More details on
date and time to follow. Steven Barbeau also
reported the land sale on Neid Road has been
turned down. The Town is looking into other
options. Also, there has been no progress on
the gas line on West Bergen Road.
Bill Kettle gave a report from the Village
Board. The Village is currently working on
Code Enforcement. The code changes on the
Pod Mall were approved which has created
additional marketing opportunities.
Tom Turnbull reported from the Chamber
of Commerce. He reiterated the Save the
Date for The Chamber Awards on February
28th, 2015. Also, The Home Show will be
on March 28, 2015-March 30, 2015. More
details to follow. Lynne Belluscio also
spoke on the Chamber’s efforts to do some
branding for tourism in Western New York.
The next meeting will be on December
1st, 2014 at a location to be announced.
Motion by Frank Davis to adjourn, seconded
by Jim Nielson.

Superintendent''s Column
by Kim M. Cox
Superintendent of Schools
Happy November! It’s hard
to believe that we are already
approaching the holiday season.
It has been an exciting fall with
extraordinary sports seasons
and new academic programs.
Thanks to all of you that have
celebrated our children by attending games, meetings, and
conferences. Your ongoing support is critical to our students’
continued success in all aspects
of their educational journey.
Two important initiatives have
been the focus for us during this
fall. One is the continued development of our Community Edu-
cation Program. We have heard
from the community that there
is a need for programming for
adults. Last spring we were able
to offer several courses and the
feedback was quite positive. New
classes will be beginning second
semester, but we are also having a
few classes starting up now. One
is the Walking Program and the
other is a Card Making course.
Both are very popular, so sign
up soon. Just visit our website at
www.leroycsd.org and click on
the Community Education Link
or contact Lynda Lowe, Community Education Coordinator,
either by telephone (768-8131)
or email ([email protected]).
The other initiative is the capital improvement project, The
R.I.T.E Project. Over the course
of the past few weeks, we have
met with several community
groups who have had some excellent questions and feedback.
On Monday, November 10th at
7:00 p.m. we will hold a public
hearing regarding the project
in the Wolcott Street School
Memorial Auditorium. During
this presentation we will show the
scope of the project and answer
any questions. Ninety-two percent of this project is targeted at
enhancements of the instructional

space to ensure our students are
as prepared as possible to meet
the demands of a 21st century
education. The remaining 8%
targets some areas at Hartwood
Park, which we have not been
able to address in previous projects. One exciting feature of
the renovations is that all students will realize an advantage
from some aspect of the project.
Whether they are in kindergarten,
play sports, are researchers, or are
involved in music, all will benefit.
In addition, there will be a win
for the community at large, as
our spaces will be enhanced and
made more accessible to all. Finally, the Board of Education has
worked diligently to ensure that
this project will not result in an
increase in taxes for the public.
Hope to see you on the 10th.

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - NOVEMBER 9, 2014
LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - NOVEMBER 9, 2014
by Lynne Belluscio
I guess I can’t deny that I was
born in 1944, since Virginia Kropf made mention of my age about
10 times in the recent article in
The Batavia Daily. I’m not sure
if turning 70 means anything. I
know at Rotary, it will cost me
$7 and I will have the pleasure
of hearing “Home, Home on the
Range,” (instead of Happy Birthday) sung off key.
Getting beyond my birthday is
like pulling the band-aide off. I’m
not sure if “celebrating” is quite
the right word. Others turning
70 this year are George Lucas,
Danny DeVito, Michael Douglas,
Gladys Knight, Diana Ross and
Sam Elliott. (I’d be willing to
celebrate with Sam Elliott.)
Popular songs in 1944 included “Don’t Fence Me In” and
“Straighten Up and Fly Right”
both of which I adhere to. There
were many songs written in
1944, “New York, New York,”
“Have Yourself A Merry Little
Christmas,” “Act-cent-uate The
Positive,” “Sentimental Journey”,
and “All of a Sudden, My Heart
Sings.” Aaron Copeland wrote
“Appalachian Spring” in 1944.
“The Adventures of Ozzie
and Harriet” debuted on radio. Tennessee Williams’ play,
“The Glass Menagerie” debuted
in Chicago and “I Remember
Mama” premiered in New York
City. Movies included “Arsenic
and Old Lace,” “Going My Way,”
“Meet Me in St Louis,” and “National Velvet.” (not that I was old
enough to see them).
World War II was still raging
in Europe and the Pacific. General Eisenhower commanded the
invasion of Europe on D-Day in
June. In September, the Battle of
Arnhem took place (recorded in
the movie (“The Bridge Too Far”)
I visited Arnhem a few years ago
during a museum conference. In
December, the Battle of the Bulge
raged. I remember talking with
Ange Bell about his experiences
during that battle. The Germans
began gassing people at Auschwitz. In 1944, Ann Frank and
her family were arrested and sent
to a concentration camp. Paris
was liberated in August.
The first open heart surgery
was performed at John Hopkins
Born In 1944
University in 1944
as well as the first
“blue baby” surgery.
Penicillin became
the medical wonder
of the year against
infections. The first
eye bank was opened.
IBM presented its
first large-scale computer, known as the
Mark I to Harvard
University. It was
more than 50 feet
long, eight feet high
and weighed 5 tons.
Using electromechanical relays,
it could add, multiply and divide.
President Roosevelt announced
his plans to run for a fourth term
and in November, he handily
beat New York State Republican
Governor, Thomas Dewey, who
had run on a platform to repeal
Roosevelt’s “New Deal.” New
York State experienced a major
5.8, earthquake in September
1944, centered in Messena, near
the Canadian border. According
to the LeRoy Gazette, folks in
LeRoy felt the earthquake. In September a major hurricane came up
the east coast doing major damage
and killing 360 people. It became
known as the “Great Atlantic Hurricane.” The Green Bay Packers
won the NFL championship, and
the St. Louis Cardinals won the
World Series. ( I have always been
a Cardinal’s fan.)
Meanwhile in LeRoy the LeRoy
Village Board began discussion
about a police retirement fund and
a Teen Canteen. The basketball
team was undefeated. The Olmsted family offered to donate
their home and property on East
Main Street for a park, but the
offer was declined. Parents were
protesting the hard, cold cement
floor in the kindergarten room at
school, saying it was not healthy
for the little kids to sit or play on
the floor. The Bette Shop opened
at 28 Main Street and the Wiss
Hotel was leased to Margaret
Waterstreet.
Crops were threatened by a
hard dry summer and drought.
And in the history repeats itself
category: the Village was trying
to figure out what the State Department of Transportation was
going to do with Routes 5 and
19. Apparently the State was
supposed to assume maintenance
and control of Routes 5 and 19,
but they would not say what
that involved. The topic for the
graduation address was “Juvenile Delinquency” which might
indicate what was on a lot of people’s mind in LeRoy. The School
Budget for 1944 was $138,932.
Students were asked to pick milkweed pods that could be used for
stuffing in life preservers.
The Village had undertaken a
sewage system survey and was
concerned that the winter sidewalk snow plowing outlook was
not good - - In December, LeRoy
had a one-day 2-foor snow fall.
There were a number of fires in
1944, including the destruction
of the North East Laundry building on West Main. People living
on Lake Street protested the
noise from the new playground
near St. Joseph’s Church. The
noise was so loud it kept people
up at night and disturbed the
serenity of their neighborhood.
It was suggested to move the
playground to Mill Street.
Of course, having been born
in 1944, I don’t remember any
of this. I believe in the old adage
“The past is a guidepost, not a
hitching post.”

The friends in the Little Bugs Playgroup class spent a day discovering cars. They walked into their classroom to discover cars
everywhere! They were in the sandbox, in the water table and
even in some paint. The children had a great time running the
cars through the paint and seeing the many different sizes of
tracks that they made.

Honoree Selected For Health and Humanitarian Award
The 30th annual Health and
Humanitarian Award of Genesee County will be presented
to Robert L. Boyce of LeRoy
on Friday, December 5 at an
awards luncheon at Terry Hills
Restaurant. The award presented
by The Jerome Foundation and
United Memorial Medical Center
Foundation recognizes volunteer
men and women of Genesee
County who have helped promote
emotional, physical and spiritual
well-being of the area’s residents.
Nominations reflected “ordinary
people who reach far beyond
themselves to the lives of those
in need, bringing hope, care, and
friendship, and helping build a
stronger, healthier community.”
In naming Robert Boyce for
this year’s award, the Founda-
tions will recognize his volunteer contributions to the LeRoy
Ambulance, UMMC Finance
Committee, UMMC Foundation,
Genesee Community College and
community betterment.
For more than twenty-six years
Mr. Boyce has devoted his time
and talent to improving the quality
of volunteer ambulance service
for the people of LeRoy. He is
currently president of the LeRoy
Ambulance Service, a position he
has held for the past 12 years. Under his leadership LeRoy Volunteer
Ambulance grew to LeRoy Ambulance Service, assuring availability of both trained personnel
and volunteers needed to provide
ambulance service to LeRoyans.
Mr. Boyce has served on
UMMC Foundation Board of
the public. Reservations can
be made by contacting United
Memorial Medical Center Foundation at 344-5300. Seating will
be limited so early reservations
are encouraged.

Directors, and the former Genesee Memorial Hospital Group
Board of Directors.
In one of several letters nominating Mr. Boyce, Marie Scofield
noted his volunteer efforts have
not been limited to health-related
organizations, but have included
education. He currently serves on
the Board of Trustees of Genesee
Community College after serving
on GCC Foundation Board of Directors for nine years, including two
years as its president. He has been
active with the LeRoy Rotary Club
that helps raise money for scholarships benefitting LeRoy students.
Other civic leadership commitments include the Village of LeRoy and LeRoy Historical Society.
