LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MAY 3, 2015
LeRoy Among Four New York Communities Advance In
$10 Million America’s Best Communities Competition
Four New York communities
– including three in the greater
Rochester and surrounding area
-- are celebrating their first round
of success in the America’s Best
Communities competition, a $10
million initiative to stimulate
economic revitalization in small
towns and cities. Webster, LeRoy
and Livingston County, plus Norwich in Central N.Y., are moving
ahead in the competition. Each
will receive $50,000 to develop
comprehensive strategies to accelerate the revival of their local
economies and improve the quality of life in their communities.
Frontier Communications,
DISH Network, CoBank and
The Weather Channel — the
competition’s sponsors — today
announced that Webster, LeRoy,
Livingston County and Norwich
have advanced into the quarterfinals of this innovative competition. They are among the 50 quarterfinalist communities that now
have six months to complete their
revitalization plans and compete
for up to an additional $3 million
to bring their ideas to life.
In the months ahead, the communities will partner with a major
corporation that will provide
guidance and support throughout
the next stage of the competition.
The America’s Best Communities
Adopt-a-Community Program has
brought together 50 distinguished
companies from across the U.S.
to support the quarterfinalist
communities. Each corporation
will be paired with a community
to serve as their strategic mentor,
while also contributing $15,000 of
the $50,000 in prize money. These
corporate partners will forge relationships with local leaders and
focus their efforts on successful
implementation of the innovative
business plans.
“It gives me great pleasure to
announce Livingston County and
LeRoy as two community areas
that have pulled together their
talent and first-class ideas and are
now moving forward in the competition,” said Bob Smith, Area
General Manager of Frontier’s
Rochester West operations. “I can
speak from personal experience
as to the caliber of the leadership,
the resilience and strength of the
communities, and the overall
commitment they have toward
enhancing, growing, and setting
the bar high.”
Julie Marshall, Livingston
County Director of Economic Development stated, “We are pleased
to be selected in the America’s
Best Communities competition.
The community revitalization
plan that we will develop with
the financial support from America’s Best Communities will be
designed to generate sustained
economic momentum that will
further strengthen Livingston
County for many years.”
Shelley Stein, County Legislator for LeRoy, said: “The community of LeRoy and Bergen are
so excited to learn that we are one
of America’s Best Communities!
Our application was a shared
effort of the Town Supervisor
Steve Barbeau and Director of
the Jell-O Museum and the LeRoy Historical Society Lynne
Belluscio. All of us are eager to
share our story of agrarian roots
and our ability to create local/
regional commerce steeped in
strong entrepreneurial tradition in
the community. We look forward
to meeting with our strategic mentor and continuing this exciting
opportunity for LeRoy to attract
more attention to our incredible
work ethic, ability to collaborate
and strong leadership capacity.
We sincerely thank Frontier, Dish
Network, CoBANK and The
Weather Channel for assisting
rural communities reach our full
potential.”
Sharing comments on LeRoy
making it to the quarterfinals,
Ms. Belluscio stated: “This is
great news! LeRoy is extremely
proud to be included in this national search for America’s Best
Community. Rural communities
are great places to live and raise
families. This is where neighbors
help neighbors, and the true
American spirit is fostered. It is
where American entrepreneurs
can thrive with proper planning
and economic development. It
takes a team of dedicated people
to make it happen - - and LeRoy
has that team - - now we hope
that this kind of economic investment and technical support
will propel this community into
the next generation.”
As the newly appointed Area
General Manager of Frontier’s
Rochester East operations, Bill
Carpenter said, “I am very excited to have a town in my area
of responsibility move forward
in the competition. Webster has
demonstrated that it has the inspiration and dedication to generate
ideas that will reinvigorate the
community. It’s this type of local
engagement that attracted me to
Frontier, and I am very proud to
work with Webster as the community moves to the next round
of competition.”
Speaking on behalf of Webster,
Matt Chatfield, Executive Director of the Webster Community
Coalition for Economic Development, noted: “The Webster
community is grateful to receive
this national recognition for the
long-standing efforts of its political, civic and business leadership
to make Webster a community of
choice in Upstate New York. We
are also excited about the prospect
of working with our corporate
partner to develop a unique, sustainable and achievable business
growth plan that will propel our
community forward for the foreseeable future.”
After launching in September
2014, the America’s Best Communities competition successfully attracted entries from 138
applicant teams, representing 347
communities across the country.
All 138 applications were reviewed by a panel of independent
expert judges who selected the 50
winning communities based upon
an objective set of criteria.
America’s Best Communities is a multi-stage, three-year
competition that will provide $4
million in seed money and other
support to assist communities
as they develop new economic
growth strategies. The top three
communities — those with the
most innovative proposals being
effectively implemented — will
share a total of $6 million in prize
money. The winning community
will be awarded $3 million, with
$2 million for second place and
$1 million for third.
“As the largest telecommunications company focused on
rural America, we recognize the
economic impact that strategic
investments often have on the
revitalization of small towns and
rural cities,” Frontier Communications Executive Chairman Maggie Wilderotter said. “America’s
Best Communities has already
inspired new collaboration among
local leaders across New York,
and it’s just getting started. The
innovative ideas the competition
is investing in have the potential
to become roadmaps to growth
for communities across the U.S.”

winning communities, visit www.

LeRotar y
Notes
“Blustery” would be an apt
description outdoors as President
Randy rang the Rotary bell to
call our weekly meeting to order. Our guest today was Christi
Lotempio. Randy recognized
Gary Churchill, just in case he
was there.
Repeat announcements were regarding The Graze-to-Raise/75th
Anniversary and Friday morning
make-up meeting. Tim Moag
has been pretty busy lately and
paid for his missed meetings. The
following all had great make-ups.
Bob Bennett, Lynn Freeman,
Christine Gephardt, and Scott
McCumiskey. This helps to
reinforce that our attendance
requirements aren’t nearly as
strict as they once were. Jerry McCullough had an on-line
make-up, the content of which
drew boos from fellow members
and a fine from the President.
The fining session got off to an
interesting start with Christine
Gephardt explaining the psychological benefits of chickens.
Bob Carlsen’s 2-cent question
cost him as did Erik Fix being
unclear about how many alpha-

(3). Tony Gugino paid for having
to go back to Florida while Anil
Sawhney found what money
is made of. Sam Vagg must’ve
thought Randy was just bugging
her and Scott McCumiskey was
absolutely batty about his fine.
Mary Young had some help
from the gallery with her million
dollar question and paid anyway.
Bob Bennett presided over our
Club Assembly where we reviewed the vast amounts of good
Rotary does each and every year
in our community. We invest a
lot of time and energy in our Appliance Raffle, Graze-to-Raise,
Pancake Breakfasts, Spaghetti
Dinners, Rent-A-Rotarian and
Super Bowl TV Raffle.
We maintain a strong presence
at the Oatka Festival through the
Hot Dog Stand and Beat-theBucket and by sponsoring the
Petting Zoo. All these efforts
go right back to our community
through donations to many worthy causes. More about that right

Shirley Garner - The Leader Of The Band
by Lynne Belluscio
Shirley Garner’s (Kinsella)
white satin majorette uniform
with gold trim has been hanging
on the back of the library door
since July 2013 and I thought is
would be appropriate to put it in
the new 2015 exhibit at LeRoy
House. We also have the hat and
the silver baton. It was brought
to the Historical Society after
Shirley died. She had told me
all about the uniform and I was
very interested in preserving the
uniform, but more importantly,
her story.
When her niece brought the
uniform in, pinned to the hanger,
Majorette photo 1944 Oatkan.
written on yellow paper was
Shirley’s story ... In high school
she was a very talented baton
twirler and when she tried out for
the LeRoy High School Band as
the majorette, she outperformed
all the other girls. As she said in
the note, she had taught most of
them how to twirl a baton. She
was selected to be the majorette,
but due to - - as she puts it - - a
“class” action of the school officials, she was told that whoever
was leading the band had to buy
their own uniform. She always
believed that the school officials
knew that her family didn’t have
the money to buy the uniform, and in their own way,
were going to prevent her
from being the majorette.
Sylvia believed that there
was some girl from one of
the rich families that wanted
to be majorette. “My mother
hit the roof,” Shirley wrote.
So she sold eggs, chickens,
canned fruit, and anything
else they could do without.
And when they had the
money, her mother took her
to Rochester to Royal Uniform - - because the school
insisted that Sylvia could
not have a “hand-made”
uniform. Her mother had
made all of her other twirling
uniforms, but that was not
good enough. So with her
store bought uniform and
boots, and hat, Sylvia led
the band. But as she wrote,
even in the school yearbook,
they never gave her credit
for being the band leader.
In the photograph of the
band standing on the front
steps of the library, it is clear
that Sylvia is alone in front
of the band. She is leading
the band as the majorette
– but the caption lists two
girls in the front row. Sylvia
always felt slighted. She
wrote, “I’m eighty and it still
hurts!” When Sylvia graduated,
she was too young to go
into nursing school, so she
remained in high school for
another year and she continued to lead the band. She
and her mother were afraid
that the school would insist
that they buy a new uniform, so her mother turned
the skirt around and
added the feathers
on the bottom so
“they couldn’t say
I was wearing some
old thing.”
Shirley went on to
nursing school at St.
Jerome’s in Batavia
and was a member
of the Cadet Nursing Corps. She was a
surgical nurse at Genesee Memorial Hospital and then went
to Strong Hospital in
Rochester where she
was a head nurse on
X3 for several years.
After some time
away, she returned
to Rochester and
worked at the Cancer
Center at the University of Rochester.
So when you come
to see the new exhibit at LeRoy House,
make sure you stop
to see the white satin
majorette uniform. Uniform after the skirt was changed and

LeRoy Little League Opens Its 63rd Year Of Play
It was a chilly morning, but the
sun was shining and the players
were eager to start as the LeRoy
Little League Baseball opening
day was Saturday, April 25. A
very nice parade from the American Legion to the Little League
Field began the day. This was
followed by a tremendous ceremony which included trophy
presentations from 2014 to the
Tigers (Historical Cup), the Indians (Scanlan Cup), and honoring
the 9/10 and 11/12 year old allstar teams who both won District
3 titles last year. The ceremony
was capped off as the season was
dedicated to Frank Bordonaro, a
coach who passed away unexpectedly last July. Members of
his family and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department made it
an extra special day! So with the
familiar words of Coach B, “Be
Ready Out There!” announced
to the crowd, it was time to Play
Ball in 2015!
Twins 1 Red Sox 0
Opening day for the 2015 Little
League season was kicked off in
style with an epic battle between
the Twins and Red Sox. The
pitching for both teams was as
crisp as the early morning spring
air. Colin McCulley started out
on the mound for the Twins. He
pitched well, striking out eight
batters and walking two in 3
innings of work. Ethan Beswick
came in and kept the shut out
intact. He worked hard on the
mound getting out of a couple of
bases loaded situations. Beswick
ended up with eight k’s while
walking three. Aiding the Twins
pitchers was their catcher, Cole
Rauscher. He was outstanding
behind the plate.
Andrew Loftus also put in a
strong pitching performance for
the Red Sox. He struck out 10 batters and only gave up one walk.
With such stellar pitching the
hits didn’t come easy. The Red
Sox could only come up with
four hits. They were all singles
off the bats of Johnny Panepento,
Cole Sullivan, Grant Gilligan
and Andrew Loftus.
The Twins could only muster
up two hits, but boy were they
timely. Colin McCulley led off
the fourth with a base hit to left
field. Then Joey Brennan delivered a clutch hit to right field
that sent McCulley from first to
third. Next up Ethan Beswick.
He picked up the only RBI of the
game by cashing in McCulley on
a fielders choice.
White Ssox 3 Indians 0
The Indians and Whitesox
started off the season with a great
game which was dominated by
excellent pitching by both clubs.
Ben LaBombard started on the
mound for the Indians and struck
out 3 out of the first 4 Whitesox
batters. The Whitesox starting
pitcher Ryan Friend responded
with striking out the side in the
first inning. In the second inning, the Whitesox were able to
squeeze in a run. Pitchers from
both clubs continued to keep
base runners at bay until the fifth
inning when Bryce Lathan of the
Whitesox ripped a single up the
middle that scored Kenny Saunders who had reached on a walk.
The Whitesox added another run
in the 6th to make the score 3-0.
Ryan Friend of the Whitesox
pitched a no hitter going all 6 innings striking out 18 and allowing
only 1 walk.
Ben LaBombard pitched 4 2/3
innings striking out 9 and walking
2. Shawn Morabito came in on
relief pitching for the final 1 1/3
innings striking out 4 and walking
1. The Whitesox hitting was lead
by Ryan Friend who collected 2
singles. Bryce Lathan also had 1
hit and 1 RBI. Kenny Saunders
added 1 single and scored a run,
Jack Duyssen added a single and
scored a run and Mike Buccina
added a run as well.
run of the 2015 season hit to the
opposite field by Zach Baker and
a hard hit ball by Cody Lytle.
The next two and a half innings
witnessed a classic pitchers’ duel
that included 12 combined strike
outs by both pitchers. On to the
bottom of the fifth which began
with a 6 pitch walk engineered by
Charlotte Blake who eventually
scored the winning run on a RBI
by Giavanni Caccamise. The
Tigers entered the top of the 6th
leading 4 -2. Aaron Leone of the
Yankees doubled with one out to
bring the tying run to the plate,
however Giavanni Caccamise
struck out the next two to preserve the win.
Cody Lytle dazzled on the
mound by striking out 15 batters.
Zach Baker showed he will be a
force to be reckoned with at the
plate this year going 3-3 with
a single, double and home run.
Cody Lytle added 2 singles. Ryan
Higgins had a single, while and
Aaron Leone added a double for
the Yankees.
Giavanni Caccamise recorded
14 strike outs. Gianni Ferrara
added a single and run scored.
Cam Greene also scored and
was a defensive stalwart behind
the plate.
making it 2-0 A’s after one.
The score would remain 2-0
until the top of the third when the
A’s would strike again. Following
a triple to the gap, Bordonaro
would score again on a single by
Fix. Aidan Robinson would reach
on an error and Fix would score
on another wild pitch to extend
the A’s lead to 4-0.
The scrappy O’s would come
back in the top of the fourth when
a single by Cory Wallace would
score pitcher Alex Panepento,
who had reached base on a single
to left making the score 4-1. The
O’s would add another run in the
bottom of the 5th as the Strollo
brothers would team up with a
pair of singles allowing younger
brother Drew to score on an RBI
by Tyler. Panepento would double moving Drew to third before
the A’s escaped with a fine play
by Shortstop Bordonaro.
The A’s added an insurance run
in the 5th when Brady Fix would
score on a Luke Rider single to
make it 5-2. That score would
hold up as the A’s managed their
first win of the season.
A’s pitcher Aidan Robinson
would throw a complete game 7
hitter, striking out 11. Panepento
had a fine outing for the O’s allowing just 5 hits while striking
out 10. Adam Risewick pitched
the last two outs for the O’s allowing one hit with one strikeout.
Chase Bordonaro went 2 for
3 with two runs and Brady Fix
went 2 for 2 with a walk and
three runs for the A’s. Luke Rider
pitched in with an RBI single.
For the O’s, Panepento would
go 3 for 3 with a run scored.
Drew Strollo, with his first LL hit
(1 for 2 with a run), Tyler Strollo
(1 for 2 with an RBI), Finn Shelby and Cory Wallace all had hits
for the O’s.
A’s 5 Orioles 2
The final game of the Opening
Day Quadruple Header featured
two expansion teams as the Athletics took on the Orioles.
The A’s struck quick in the bottom of the 1st. Chase Bordonaro
led of with a sharp single and
quickly stole 2nd and 3rd. After
a Brady Fix walk, Bordonaro
would score on a wild pitch that
moved Fix to 3rd. Jake Marcello

Game 3 of Opening Day began off 5 straight pitches before a wild

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MAY 3, 2015
Genesee Community College
is pleased to recognize three
adult students who have earned
the Rochester Area Colleges
Continuing Education (RACCE)
Award, which recognizes adult
students who successfully balance their college studies with
other responsibilities. Constance
Eadie, Bernadette Penkszyk and
Candice Murphy were honored at
the RACCE banquet in Rochester
on April 22, 2015.
Connie Eadie, 48, was apprehensive when she started at GCC
two years ago. She had dropped
out of high school 28 years prior
and, now a mother and grandmother, worried she wouldn’t
fit in. “What I found was that I
was accepted and I made some
wonderful, amazing, life-long
friends...of all ages!!” Connie, of
Le Roy, is pursuing a Paralegal
Studies degree and revitalized
the Paralegal Club. She earned a
Leadership Certificate, became
an orientation leader, was named
Student of the Month in March
2015 and has maintained excellent
grades throughout, earning President’s List honors every semester.
She is no longer afraid about
starting a new career because she
believes GCC has given her the
confidence and skills that she has
something to offer. After graduation this May she hopes to work in
Achievements
a family law office, “somewhere
that I feel I can really make a
difference helping people.”
Bernadette Penkszyk returned
to GCC in fall 2014, enrolling
in the new Food Processing
Technology degree program. She
became interested in the program
while working at Alpina Foods,
and though she was laid off, she
plans to continue toward earning
an FPT degree in 2016. It won’t
be her first degree from the College. In 1999, she graduated from
the Computer Repair and Electrical Technology program and
worked in these arenas for years.
In between running a seasonal
rental business and being a school
bus driver for Alexander Central
Schools, Bernadette returned
to GCC to try the Occupational
Therapy Assistant program, Web
Design, and most recently FPT.
She has maintained a strong desire to learn, and is a true example
of someone taking advantage of
the many opportunities GCC has
to offer.
W h e n C a n d i c e M u rp hy
walked into GCC’s Lima Campus Center in fall 2013, she was
so anxious she thought she might
melt. The welcoming staff eased
her anxiety and Candice enrolled
full time, making the President’s
List. She did this while providing 24 hour care for a veteran,
children and a home. Her life has
undergone tremendous change
since that first semester. She took
on a new job, a new home, raising children alone, and a mother
with health concerns. She earned
Dean’s List honors her second
and third semesters and continues
to do it all, fast approaching her
degree in Human Services.
RACCE seeks to recognize
adults who have been especially
successful at balancing college
study with other adult responsibilities and the winners are selected under the following criteria:
Cory Loomis of Caledonia
will receive his masters degree in
Public Policy on May 16th. From
the University of Albany Rockefeller College of public Affairs &
Policy. Cory is the son of proud
parents Gary and Linda Loomis.
Steven Farnholz ‘18 of LeRoy,
NY 14482 has been named to
the Elmira College Dean’s List
for Term II, 2015. Full-time students who achieve a grade point
average of 3.600 or higher at the
end of any Term I or Term II are
placed on the Dean’s List at the
college.
Jacquelyn Carson of Le Roy,
NY, was one of 23 students
inducted into SUNY Oneonta’s
Edward K. Griesmer chapter of
National Residence Hall Honorary, a branch of the National
Association of Colleges and
University Residence Halls, on
April 12.

The Pre-K class at Love Bugs Preschool celebrated Earth Day
at Mickel’s Nickels. The class walked to see Miss Joan, Castle
and Genny at their recycling center. They learned all about how
bottles and cans are recycled. Miss Joan surprised the children
with custom made tee shirts, snacks and drinks. The community
of Le Roy is so lucky to have such an amazing person among them!
