Spring 2009 - Osceola County Genealogical Society
Volume 25, Issue 1 Check out our upcoming agenda! A note from our president... The Past On November 1, five of our members attended the workshop Magnifying Brick Walls Clues, which was held at the new Prince Conference Center at Calvin College, sponsored by the Western Michigan Genealogical Society. It was an interesting and entertaining program, especially for those working in Eastern Europe, an excellent lunch, a wonderful facility (easy to get to and convenient parking) and a most reasonable price—what more could you ask? It was so well received and attended that they are planning another for next fall. We will keep you informed. During the winter, we met at the courthouse and worked on the 1884 and 1894 census records. As usual, the worst storms of the winter have been on those days, but some faithful members (always Ted and his friend) have been there. We have been working on Hersey and Richmond Townships of 1884, and whatever you want to do in 1894, Last time that was Burdell Township. This schedule will continue through March. The Future Thursday, April 16, 7 p.m. at the Old Rugged Cross Historical Society Museum, for a Roundtable Discussion, sharing individual genealogical problems, sources, etc. with each other. Thursday, May 21, 7 p.m. at the Evart Library/Museum to continue our April program, if necessary. We have a project we can work on if there is time. (Carpool from the ORCHS Museum parking lot at 6:30 p.m. (See Betsy on page 2) The Osceo/a County Genealogical Society Newsletter... Searching the branches of family trees strengthens roots for all of us. Join us, won't you? Let's see, where were we? Or is it, where are they? A good many months ago we started sharing an index in our newsletter from the 1884 State Census for LeRoy Township. We actually got from Silas ADAMS to John BUTZACH. Ready? Here we go... We visited it years ago when it was a mess in the woods. Volunteers have cleaned it up, restored the tombstones, and given us an example of what can be done with an abandoned cemetery. You are encouraged to bring guests. (Carpool from the ORCHS Museum parking lot at 6:30 p.m. No meetings in July and August. The Fall newsletter will be mailed in August. Thursday, September 17 7 p.m. Meet at the ORCHS Museum to compare our summer findings and get organized for the next six months. Our dinner meeting will be held in October. Be thinking of a place and program that you would like to have in October.
